Incoming Payments

Why don’t I see a payment that I’m expecting?

If you are expecting a payment and you do not see it in your Incoming Payments, this is most likely because you have not added the email address or mobile number to which the payment was sent. Have you added this email address or mobile number? If not, go to Preferences to add and verify it. Once you are done, you will be able to see the payment immediately.

When will the funds be available in my account after I deposit the payment?

Click "Activity" within Popmoney to view the estimated date when the funds will be available.

Why am I asked to verify my mobile number to deposit a payment sent to my email address?

As a security precaution, the sender provided your mobile number when s/he scheduled the payment; you need to verify access to this mobile number in order to confirm your identity and receive the funds.

What is Automatic Deposit?

Automatic Deposit is the easiest and fastest way to receive money. It allows you to designate one account into which Popmoney payments from all participating financial institutions will be automatically deposited. Once turned on, there’s nothing more for you to do – you will be notified of incoming payments via email, the payment will be sent into your selected account. You can edit Automatic Deposit settings in Preferences.

Why didn’t Automatic Deposit work for an incoming payment?

There are two reasons why automatic deposit may not work for incoming payments:

  • The payment was sent to an email address not currently in your profile. Please click Preferences to add and verify additional email addresses.
  • As an extra security precaution, the sender is sometimes required to provide your mobile number when s/he scheduled the payment; you need to verify access to this mobile number in order to receive the payment.

What happens when a payment someone sent me expires?

You have 10 days from the send date to deposit the payment. When a payment expires, the funds are returned to the sender. Please contact your sender to request another payment if you still wish to receive the funds.

Received Requests and Invoices

Where can I find received requests and invoices?

All unpaid money requests and invoices are listed in your To Do List in the Overview tab within Popmoney.

Is there a fee for paying a request or invoice?

There is no fee for paying a request or invoice.

Contacts

What is the difference between adding a contact’s email address or bank account information?

The information you provide on a contact determines how the payment you send to them will be processed and how s/he will be notified.

  • Email address: your contact will receive an email with instructions on how to direct the payment into his or her bank account
  • Bank account information (routing and account number): the money will be directly deposited into your contact’s bank account. You will also have the option to send the contact an email. Please note that the bank account information is not mandatory to send money to your contact.

Why are my contacts⁏ email addresses, or bank accounts suspended or on hold?

For your protection, your contacts’ bank accounts, email addresses or mobile numbers may be placed on hold or suspended for various reasons. For example, if you fail verification when attempting to send money to them. Please contact us to remove a hold or suspension.

Preferences

What is a primary email address?

Your primary email address will be used for all communications between Popmoney and you. It is also the email address that your contact will see when you send an email payment.

Why would I want to add multiple email addresses that I own to the Popmoney service?

By adding multiple email addresses you can receive payments to multiple email addresses. This is helpful for individuals who, for example, have separate email addresses for personal friends and work colleagues.

How to transfer money online to friends and family

1

Use their contact information

If you have the email or U.S. mobile number of the recipient, you may be able to send money securely using an online service or app. For example, your bank's app might include Zelle®, a fast, safe and easy way to send money to friends, family and others you trust, offered by most major U.S. banks. There is also a stand-alone Zelle app that friends can use with their debit cards if their banks don't participate (terms and conditions apply). You should only use an app like Zelle with friends or family, not with people you don't know well, such as someone reselling concert tickets or doing another online transaction. This approach lets you easily send money to your loved ones, no matter where they bank in the U.S.

  • Deliverytime is typically within minutes when the recipient's email address or U.S. mobile number is already enrolled with Zelle.

2

Type in their account number

If you have the recipient’s account number and transit routing number, you can use online banking or an app to transfer money into their account. You might do this with someone you regularly send money to, such as a family member. This is also a great way to transfer money between your own accounts.

  • Fees depend on the bank, but it could be free.
  • Delivery time may be immediate or may take two to four days.

Tip: A transit routing number—also known as a check routing number, ABA number or routing transit number (RTN)—is a nine-digit code that identifies the bank, its branch and location. Bank of America customers can find their routing numbers by using the routing numbers FAQ page.

3

Set up a wire transfer

For sending a large amount of money, wire transfers can be a solution. Keep in mind that there’s typically a fee for wire transfers. To make a wire transfer, you can call, visit or go online with your bank or a wire transfer company. Regardless, make sure you use a trusted source.

  • Fees vary based on the institution, though it could be free based on the type of account a customer has. Companies may charge a fee for sending as well as receiving wire transfers, and rates may increase if you’re sending the money to someone outside the U.S.
  • Delivery time is generally one day or less.

4

Have your bank send a check

Not everyone is set up for, or wants to receive, electronic transfers of money. You may be able to use online or mobile banking to arrange for your bank to send them a personal or cashier’s check. The recipient can deposit or cash it at their bank or can use mobile check deposit in their bank’s app. For regular checks, recipients may have to wait several days before accessing the money. For cashier’s checks, recipients may receive the money immediately when they cash the check.

  • Fees may or may not occur for ordering or depositing checks; ask your bank for policy details.
  • Delivery time varies based on mail delivery and how long it takes for the recipient to deposit the money. Domestic mail generally takes one to three days. Though it’s rare, checks do occasionally get lost in the mail. Ask your bank the procedure you should follow if this happens.

How to Send Money Instantly to Someone From My Bank Account

If you're in a bind and you need to quickly transfer money, a number of options are available. But the best option is to send a wire transfer from the bank or other financial institution that holds your account. A wire transfer, sometimes called an electronic funds transfer, sends money electronically from your account and into another.

Talk to the Recipient

Talk to Your Bank Teller

Use a Money Transfer Service

Pay Any Fees

Fill Out Any Required Forms

Get Confirmation of the Transfer

Once you have completed the wire transfer, be sure to call the recipient and confirm that the funds were received. Your bank or money transfer service will give you a transaction receipt with the wiring information on it, so if anything is amiss you can take this back to the institution and ask for assistance in sorting out the problem.

Keep in mind that while wiring money instantly transfers money out of your bank account, it could take a few hours for the transfer to be credited in the recipient's account. There is a wire cutoff time in the late afternoon. Wires made after this cutoff will not be credited until the following business day.

The 7 best apps for sending money

If you need to send someone money—to split a check, settle a bet, or just for a treat—there’s no need to spend time swapping bank account details or searching for bills and notes. All you need is a smartphone and the right app.

In fact, you’ve got multiple apps to pick from, so you can choose the one that’s most convenient for your specific needs.

1. Venmo

This platform’s main objective is to make it easier for you to quickly send money to friends and family, but Venmo (available for Android and iOS) is also simple, uncluttered, and friendly.

To pay someone, select them directly from your contacts, enter their phone number or email address, or scan their Venmo profile QR code. Then, enter the amount, write down a subject line describing the payment, and tap Pay

There are no fees if you use a debit card or bank account as your funding source, but if you go for a credit card, Venmo will charge you a three percent fee.

[Related: Paying with your phone is safe and convenient. Here’s how to start.]

The money appears in Venmo accounts instantly, and you can keep it there if you want to use it for future payments. You can also transfer it to your bank account for free, but it’ll take between one and three business days. If you’re in a hurry, you can also make an instant transfer for a 1% fee.

Venmo also has a social media aspect to it—you’ll see a feed in the app where you can browse your past incomings and outgoings, and also take a peek at how your friends are spending their own money.

2. Paypal

If you’re looking for a comprehensive platform, there’s PayPal (available for Android and iOS). But the functionality for sending money to people you know is almost as straightforward as Venmo.

From the home screen, tap Send, then enter a name from your contacts list, an email address, or a mobile number. Enter the amount and an optional message, and tap Next to move on.

Choose Friends and family as the transfer type, and then select your funding source. You can use your existing PayPal, but if that doesn’t cover the amount, you can also link a debit or credit card, or a bank account. To finish, tap on Send

Transfers take up to one business day and there are no fees for payments.

3. Apple Pay

This platform comes built into iOS and, unfortunately, it’s not available to download on Android devices.

Apple Pay doesn’t charge any fees for personal transfers, making it a great alternative between Apple users. To get started, go to your iPhone Settings and select Wallet & Apple Pay. Here you can add debit and credit cards, and link new ones to the app to use as funding sources. Make sure to enable the Apple Cash toggle switch at the top for person-to-person payments.

With that done, go to the Messages app and open or start a new chat with whom you want to send money to. There, tap the Apple Pay button at the bottom, enter the amount, and select Pay. To finish transfering the money, tap the send button (upward arrow).

Transfers are instant on this app, though bank withdrawals can take up to three days.

4. Google Pay

This platform comes installed on Android phones by default and it’s also available for iOS.

Like Apple Pay, it’s a comprehensive payment option for all kinds of goods and services (there’s even a ‘split the bill’ feature), but it works well for sending money to friends and family too.

[Related: How to raise money for charity on your phone]

First, set up a funding source on Google Pay—you can use debit cards and bank accounts. Then, tap Pay friend or group and choose a name from your contacts. You can also set a recipient by entering an email address or phone number. Tap Pay, enter your amount, and you’re done.

There are no fees with Google Pay and transfers are instant, but bank withdrawals can take from minutes up to five business days.

5. Samsung Pay

Samsung Pay comes preinstalled on phones from the company, but the platform is also compatible with any Android device.

As with Apple Pay and Google Pay, you can use it to make contactless purchases in stores and online, and it also lets you send payments to people. The only downside, is that for this platform to work, both the sender and receiver need to have a virtual card inside the app called a Samsung Pay Cash card.

You can add funds to this card from a debit card or a bank account. Once that’s done,  all you need to do to transfer money to someone else is tapping Pay and choosing a contact name or entering a phone number.

There are no fees, and transfers are instant, though Samsung doesn’t give a timeframe on how long it takes to withdraw money from a bank account.

6. Cash App

Previously known as Square Cash, Cash App (available for Android and iOS) makes personal payments as straightforward as they can possibly be.

As soon as you open the app, you’ll be able to input the amount you want to send. Then you’ll need to tap the Pay button and pick a recipient. You can choose one from your contacts list,  input an email address or mobile number, or use the user’s $cashtag, a sort of profile name that makes it easier to find the person you want to send money to.

[Related: The Nigerian prince scam is still fooling people. Here’s why.]

As with other platforms on this list, you can link debit cards and bank accounts to Cash App and transfer money for free. But if you use a credit card for funding, the app will charge you a three percent levy.

Cash App says most transfers take just minutes, but depending on your bank, they can take up to three days.

7. Facebook Messenger

Even if you don’t spend a lot of time on the news feed these days, you may be using Facebook Messenger (available for Android and iOS) to keep in touch with friends and family.

Well, this is also a convenient place for sending and receiving money for free. The only drawback is that transfers can take up to five business days to complete.

If you haven’t registered any payment information with Facebook already, you’ll first need to set up your funding sources—you can use debit cards and PayPal accounts. Once you’ve done that, open or start a conversation with the person you want to send money to. Tap the + button and then the $ button, and enter the amount you want to transfer. Click the Pay button to confirm.

Correction – June 14, 2021, at 10:39 a.m.: This story stated that bank accounts and debit and credit cards could be used as funding sources for Google Pay. However, the platform only accepts debit cards and bank accounts.
