In March 2017, Amazon announced the beta launch, on March 29, 2017, of Amazon Fresh Pickup, a drive-in-type grocery store for Amazon Prime subscribers.[6] It is a delivery service that lets users shop online, reserve times to pick up the groceries, and have them loaded into their cars at the store.[7]

In Germany, the product range is 85,000 product lines. By comparison, the REWE supermarket chain's home delivery service has 9,000 product lines.[8]

In the United Kingdom, Amazon signed a deal with the British SuperMarket chain Morrisons to provide supplies for Amazon Prime Pantry and PrimeFresh.[9]

In July 2017, it was reported that Amazon Fresh was selling meal kits.[10]

Amazon Fresh opened their first grocery store in the Washington, D.C. area on May 27, 2021, in the suburb of Franconia, Virginia.[18] On June 17, 2021, Amazon Fresh opened a location in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue that features the "Just Walk Out" technology which allows customers to skip the checkout line when purchasing their groceries.[19] Amazon Fresh opened their first location in Washington, D.C. in the Logan Circle neighborhood on July 22, 2021; this location features the "Just Walk Out" technology.[20] On August 5, 2021, the first Amazon Fresh grocery store in Pennsylvania opened in the Philadelphia suburb of Warrington.[21]

Product lines[edit]

Amazon Fresh offers grocery items for sale, as well as a subset of items from the main Amazon.com storefront. Items ordered through Amazon Fresh are available for home delivery on the same day or the next day, depending on the time of the order and the availability of delivery slots.

Amazon Fresh operates independently of Whole Foods, which is also owned by Amazon. They have separate facilities and separate inventories that they sell. Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN) is set to open the first physical store of its Amazon Fresh grocery business this week. Amazon first jumped into the grocery business with the acquisition of the natural and organics chain Whole Foods Market in 2017.

The first new Amazon Fresh store, located near Los Angeles, will be the first of the chain that is intended for a different customer than Whole Foods. The company said it will focus on low prices and offer a range of national brands at its Amazon Fresh stores, making it more of a competitor to chains Kroger or Albertsons than Whole Foods.

Amazon also said it will introduce its new Dash Cart in the stores, providing customers a faster shopping experience without needing to go through check-out lanes. The Dash Cart is linked to the Amazon smartphone app, allowing customers with a maximum of two grocery bags to simply place groceries in the cart and exit. It also has a screen that can show Alexa shopping lists to users.

The Amazon Fresh delivery service has been available in select cities exclusively for Amazon Prime members. Beginning today, some customers will be able to shop in the physical Amazon Fresh store, by invitation only. It will be open to all customers in the coming weeks, the company said.

Amazon Fresh stores will combine the convenience of online shopping with the in-store experience, and will offer same-day delivery or pickup options for Prime members. Amazon.com customers will also be able to pick up or return packages at the Fresh stores.

Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh: How the 'Just walk out' tech works

(Pocket-lint) - Amazon has been opening physical Amazon Go convenience stores and Amazon Go Grocery stores across the US and it has now launched a UK store, branded Amazon Fresh.

All have one thing in common - unlike most shops, there are no registers or cashiers. You walk in, pick out what you want, and walk out. Amazon calls it a 'just walk out' shopping experience.

Here's everything you need to know, including how it works.

What is a 'just walk out' store?

Amazon described the original Amazon Go store as "a new kind of store with no checkout required". The first Amazon Go in Seattle was basically a small convenience store with roughly 1,800 square feet of retail space and it's this small format that is replicated elsewhere.

When you shop at one of these stores, you never have to wait in line. The store works with an Amazon Go app for iOS or Android: You enter, take the products you want and, thanks to the app, just leave again. The app is linked to your Amazon account for billing.

There are two types of Amazon Go stores in the US:

  • Amazon Go: Serves breakfast, lunch, and all sorts of snacks that are ready
  • Amazon Go Grocery: Produce, ready-made dinners, and household essentials

And now there's a similar store in London, but it's called Amazon Fresh.

These stores work by using the same types of technologies found in self-driving cars, such as computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning.

This technology can detect when products are taken or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in your virtual cart. When you leave the store with your goods, your Amazon account is charged and you are sent a receipt.

Where can you find these stores?

There are now over 25 Amazon Go stores in the US including the larger Amazon Go Grocery (one of which is a smaller concession in a Macy's).

Amazon has also now launched the first store outside the US with the technology. This is in Ealing, UK and is called Amazon Fresh, matching the brand Amazon is using for online grocery. Other rumours pointed to stores in Oxford Circus (2018), Notting Hill Gate (2020) before the Ealing store surfaced.

Various reports suggest that up to 30 stores could be opened in the UK and rumours suggest the launch partner is Morrisons - certainly the Amazon Fresh store is carrying a large offering of Amazon-branded grocery items which may have come from that source. Amazon and Morrisons already work together on the Amazon Fresh online delivery service.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Amazon hopes to one day open 2,000 grocery and convenience stores. These stores might even have multiple formats.

I've visited Amazon's original Seattle Amazon Go store to experience the "future of retail". The first thing to note is that the technology works extremely well - I had my receipt emailed to us in no time at all and the system wasn't fooled by us picking up things and putting them back through indecision.

The most fascinating thing about the experience is how you feel about picking things up and putting them back. It's a bit like the feeling you get when removing something from your hotel minibar - have you been charged just by lifting it out of its spot in the cabinet? And there's a definite feeling that you could be stealing by "just walking out" - is security going to come and stop you? Are you being overcharged? Are you going to be undercharged?

The actual store itself is just like a normal convenience store - don't expect to go in there and buy books, tech or clothes or anything else that Amazon sells online.

It's basically quick-and-easy food and other groceries. It's just that there's no cashier. It was definitely an experience - and we're quite proud of the mug we bought...which says "just walk out" on it!

Amazon

How does it work?

To get started, you need an Amazon account, a supported smartphone, and the free app. You scan the app as you enter the store to get through a turnstile. You then put away your phone and began shopping - picking up items, putting them in a basket or in bags (without needing to scan each item). You can just walk out when you're finished.

You don't need to check out and you can replace items at any time.

The app has a navigation bar at the bottom with tabs for four screens: Key, Receipts, About, and More. The Key screen seems to bring up the QR code that the store's turnstiles scan to let you in, while the Receipt screen shows what you bought after you've left.

Amazon

'Just Walk Out' tech

Amazon is using a combination of artificial intelligence, computer vision, and data pulled from multiple sensors to ensure customers are only charged for the stuff they pick up. Cameras are used to track items as they're taken from shelves.

A patent application filed by Amazon in early 2015 first revealed details about the technology. The patent described a store that would work using a system of cameras, sensors, and/or RFID readers to identify shoppers and their items.

There is also a mention of "facial recognition" and user information, which may include images of the user, details about the user like height and weight, user biometrics, a username and password, even user purchase history.

We're not entirely sure if this patent application precisely describes the final iteration of Just Walk Out technology. However, it is a camera-tracking system and it must also use some kind of AI to track you through the store.

Amazon Fresh, the new, high-tech grocery store under construction at 7401 24th St. in the North Riverside Plaza shopping center since late 2020, will not open this year, North Riverside Village Administrator Sue Scarpiniti confirmed to the Landmark last week.

Scarpiniti said she recently had talked to the person who manages the store, who told her that the plan was now to open Amazon Fresh in either late February or early March 2022.

“He said they were having issues with hiring labor, trying to get enough people hired, in addition to stocking the shelves because of supply chain demands, it sounds like,” Scarpiniti said.

Until recently, Amazon had declined to even reveal that it was building one of its new-concept stores in the space that long housed Jewel-Osco, which closed its doors in 2020. But, Scarpiniti said the store finally has submitted documents to the village confirming the store’s identity as an Amazon Fresh market.

“They’ve sent in a preliminary liquor license to confirm they’re Amazon Fresh and the water bill is already set up as Amazon Fresh,” Scarpiniti said.

While the store’s manager may have told Scarpiniti that Amazon was having trouble hiring, the company’s hiring efforts have not been exactly robust up to now. The only position advertised for the store on the company’s website is for a position known as a “zone lead,” which appears to be a mid-level supervisory job.

“[The manager] said they don’t even have first-line supervisors in place yet,” Scarpiniti said. “They’re still working on the management team.”

The company apparently is now including the North Riverside location in a group of stores they plan to open around the spring of 2022, said Scarpiniti, and have decided to focus right now on the two new Amazon Fresh stores that opened this month in Westmont and Morton Grove.

Like those two stores, the North Riverside location will also feature Amazon Fresh’s state-of-the-art checkout technology called “Just Walk Out,” which allows customers to skip the traditional checkout line by scanning an in-store QR code using an Amazon app they can download to their smartphones.

When customers add items to their cart, the cost is automatically tallied by in-cart cameras. When a customer is ready to check out, they can scan the QR code again, and the app will automatically charge the amount to the customer’s credit or debit card.

With the opening of the Morton Grove store on Nov. 11, Amazon Fresh now has six stores in Illinois. The others are located in Schaumburg, Naperville, Bloomingdale and Oak Lawn.

ordering on amazon

But First: When Did Tipping Begin?

Tipping began in Europe during the feudal system in the Middle Ages. By the 17th century, it became customary for overnight guests to provide sums of money to private homeowners to show their appreciation. Soon, everyone also bbva compass auto loan sign in giving tips at various commercial establishments.

It was rich American travelers to Europe that brought tipping to the US. This is particularly true for those who wished to display their sophistication and wealth, too.

After the Civil War, tipping spread from commercial establishments to the hospitality sector first and foremost.

Giving tips was a solution many rich employers found effective for avoiding paying workers that they have formerly enslaved. Because of racist roots of tipping, many states tried to end the practice in the early 1900s.

The restaurant industry, however, fought back and removed local bans on tipping. Amazon fresh rest, as they say, is history.

How Much Should I Tip?

As a general rule of thumb, one should leave 15% to 20% of the bill (before tax). If the service is great, it is fine to add more to the tip, but never less than 20%. If the service is bad, one may leave a small tip or talk to the manager instead. Different industries have different tipping rules.

Humankind has been tipping for centuries already. Despite this, it’s still a source of confusion for many. A lot of people also debate over the amount of tips to give different service providers.

If it’s the first time that you have used a service, it is very much possible for tipping to give you unnecessary stress and anxiety!

This is especially amazon fresh if you are planning on going for the very same service sooner or later. The thought of running into the same person whom you failed to tip correctly is enough to make you feel mortified.

Worry not!

The following are the rules on tipping different service providers:

Service ProviderTip Amount
Food server15% to 20% (at least 10% at a buffet or when picking up the item at the counter)
Pest exterminator$5 to $10 (more during the holidays)
Hairstylist15% to 20% (can be split among different people who helped)
Barber15% to 20% (can be split among different people who helped)
Plumbers$20 (can be more)
Electricians$20 (can be more)
Road service$10 to $20
Bellhop$1 to $2
Hotel housekeeping$2 to $5 (per day)
Maid10% to 15% (more during the holidays or for a job well done)
Local movers$20 (more if long distance or no dishes broke)
Cable installer$20 (if extremely happy with the service)
Postal carrierA low-cost gift like a mug or tumbler (they are not allowed to receive money)

And this takes us to a very important question that needs to be answered…

Do You Tip Amazon Delivery?

food delivery

Tipping Amazon delivery people is a good idea. While tipping is optional, it helps make the day of those who deliver Amazon orders. This is especially true since they are not Amazon employees — they are local couriers. Further, Amazon delivery people make minimum wage or a just a little over it.

Refrain from assuming that Amazon delivery people are the same as the employees of multinational and multibillion delivery service companies such as UPS and FedEx.

As mentioned earlier, Amazon delivery people are couriers that work with local delivery companies Amazon has partnered with. In many instances, these people do not have big salaries, impressive benefits, company-provided trucks and many others.

Despite this, Amazon delivery people have to get to doorsteps fast!

Amazon delivery people deserve tips.

Giving them tips is also a great way to support your community. That’s because it can help make local employees happy with their employers, which is vital for a local company’s success.

How Much Do Amazon Fresh Drivers Make?

Amazon Fresh drivers make at least $18 per hour. The amount is a little higher than the $15 to $16 minimum wage that small business and commercial establishment employees are getting this year. During busy days and if they deliver products fast, Amazon Fresh drivers can make up to $25 per hour.

Earlier, it was mentioned that Amazon Fresh drivers can make anywhere from $18 to $25 per hour. However, it’s not all the time that Amazon Fresh drivers get the promised wage of Amazon.

This is when a problem strikes: Amazon uses the tips the customers give via the app to give delivery people their guaranteed wage.

It is due to this practice of Amazon why, in February 2021, the company had to settle a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigation amounting to over $61.7 million.

Hopefully, from now on, Amazon Fresh drivers will get all the tips the customers give due to the said settlement.

How Do I Tip Amazon Fresh?

The app automatically adds a tip amounting to $5 when a customer checks out. The good news is that the customer can change the amazon fresh of tip prior to checking out. So, in other words, it can be set higher or lower than the default amount. The amount can also be set to zero if the customer wants.

Amazon Fresh drivers know that they can get tips by means of the app. Needless to say, they do not expect the customers to hand them some cash upon delivering their orders.

Many people who regularly avail of Amazon Fresh say that the tips they give range anywhere from $2 to $5.

It all depends on the quality of the service, including especially the attitude of the delivery people.

In some cases, some customers do not hesitate to give tips greater than $5 if they feel that the Amazon Fresh delivery people deserve more.

For instance, it’s a great idea to reciprocate the hard work of an Amazon Fresh delivery person with a tip higher than $5 if you have a lot of orders, your orders are heavy or the weather is inclement.

Do Amazon Prime Now Drivers See Tip?

Amazon Prime Now drivers do not see tips. They can have an idea of whether they were tipped or not by means of the app. However, the app does not tell them the amount of the tip they got or who gave them a tip. It also takes Amazon Prime Now drivers 24 to 48 hours to learn if they received tips.

Just because customers are using Amazon Fresh doesn’t mean that they have all the money in the world. Like others, there are times in which they have to stretch their available budget, too.

image of warehouse

This is when the benefit of Amazon Prime Now drivers not seeing tips comes in.

Well, at least for a customer like you.

If you are trying to save some money and you wish to give a tip amounting to less than $5, which is the default set by the app, there is no need to worry about breaking the heart of the delivery person.

Just Before You Tip Amazon Fresh

When you check out, the app automatically adds a tip amounting to $5. Every tip you give will be added to the base pay of Amazon Fresh delivery people, provided that Amazon will no longer use tips to provide the guaranteed wage.

It is fine to change the amount of the tip before you check out — you can increase or decrease the tip. As a matter of fact, you amazon fresh set it to zero.

But because Amazon Fresh delivery people are making minimum wage or just a little over it, giving them the recommended $5 tip each time is a good idea.

Interesting Facts

Do Amazon Fresh drivers pack the items?

The employees of the warehouse where the orders come from are the ones that pack the items. Amazon Fresh drivers simply pick them up and take them to the doorsteps of the customers. If the packaging is poor, it’s not the fault of the Amazon Fresh driver.

When do Amazon Fresh drivers get paid?

Amazon Fresh drivers get paid twice a week. Usually, they get their pay every Tuesday and Friday. However, Amazon Restaurant or Prime Now get paid after the tips are processed, which can take one to two days. Payments are sent through direct deposit.

It was definitely an experience - and we're quite proud of the mug we bought.which says "just walk out" on it!
