What Are the Benefits of Online Banking?

Online banking gives customers flexibility when it comes to managing their accounts. Security features such as alerts let you react quickly to any potential banking issues. Meanwhile, the ability to deposit checks or transfer funds digitally gives you a greater degree of control over your money. Barclays accelerates growth of Pay by Bank app

Starting today, Barclaycard merchants now have the opportunity to accept mobile payments through Pay by Bank app, the new payment method created by Mastercard’s Vocalink business.

In addition, a greater number of consumers will also be able to pay using the functionality; in 2020 Barclays will be rolling out Pay by Bank app, currently live on its Pingit app, on its Barclays Mobile Banking App. This means over 6m users will be able to benefit from the service.

As the only bank in the UK which is both an issuer and acquirer, Barclays’ planned roll-out to both merchants and consumers will accelerate the growth of Pay by Bank app by adding both supply and demand simultaneously.

Pay by Bank app allows shoppers to pay quickly and securely for goods and services on a mobile device, without the need to enter payment details, logins or passwords. Customers simply select the Pay by Bank app option during the checkout process, at which point they log into their existing mobile banking app to seamlessly authorise and complete the purchase.

Merchants adopting the technology should see higher conversion rates for mobile transactions, because consumers don’t need to manually input payment details, as well as lower levels of fraud, due to the strong customer authentication and simpler digital dispute system.

This announcement builds on the bank’s track record of successfully driving the adoption of new payment technology. In 2003, Barclays was instrumental in launching Chip and PIN across the UK, and facilitated mainstream take-up of contactless in 2007.

Rob Cameron, CEO, Global Head of Payment Acceptance at Barclaycard, said:"Thanks to significant investments in our platform, clients have access to a growing range of payment types, each of which can help them increase market share by meeting the needs of more customers. With mobile now an essential part of every retailer’s channel strategy, we’re excited to be partnering with Mastercard to help our clients make their mobile customer experience as safe and as frictionless as possible.”

Darren Foulds, Managing Director of Mobile Payments at Barclays, said: “Consumers now want to pay quickly and securely in a variety of ways, whether that’s in person, online or on the go. By leveraging Barclays’ unique position as both an issuer and acquirer, our planned rollout of Pay by Bank app will simultaneously give customers and businesses more choice in how to make and take payments.”

Mark Barnett, Divisional President of Mastercard in the UK, Ireland, Nordics & Baltics said: “Partnering with Barclays, given its strengths across the entire payments landscape, is another key step in the progression of Pay by Bank app. The creation of the infrastructure for this new payment method is gathering pace and we look forward to maintaining this momentum as we bring it to market.”

Barclays app and online banking down as customers unable to make or send payments

Barclays customers were unable to send or make payments this morning after the banking giant was hit by technical issues.

The problems appeared to affect hundreds of users of Barclays online and mobile banking services.

Frustrated customers had taken to Twitter to complain that they couldn't make or receive money transfers.

Outage tracker DownDetector shows the issues started around 9am today. Barclays confirmed the outage lasted around half an hour but said its services are now up and running again.

More than 350 complaints had been logged by users, with the greatest number of complaints coming from London.

Other cities including Birmingham, Manchester and Plymouth also appeared to be affected.

Is Barclays down for you? Let us know: mirror.money.saving@mirror.co.uk

DownDetector shows a spike in complaints about Barclays

One person on Twitter said: "Three people have sent me money this morning but its not reflecting in my account?

"What is going on please. I'm now stranded without any money in middle of nowhere."

Another said: "I’m also waiting on three payments to enter my account? They have left the senders accounts but have not entered mine?"

A third person said: "Anyone using the Barclays Banking App there appears to be some issues with payments and transfers this morning."

DownDetector shows 39% of the complaints were to do with online banking, while 31% were about transferring funds and 31% of people had problems with mobile banking.

Barclays had apologised for the service disruption on its social media pages.

In a separate comment to The Mirror, the bank said: "We’re very sorry about the technical problems you have experienced today.

"Everything is now back up and running, and we're really grateful to you for bearing with us."

You can check if any Barclays or Barclaycard services are down on its dedicated webpage which monitors its various banking services.

If you're in desperate need of access to your money but your online services are down, you can go to your local bank branch to withdraw your funds as normal.

If you don’t have a local bank branch nearby or you're unable to get there, try and call your bank or contact it on social media to ask what to do.

In terms of compensation, you aren't automatically entitled to any money - it instead depends on how badly the outage has affected you.

It also depends on how long the service disruption lasts for and how quickly the bank worked to resolve it.

Barclays has a dedicated page to help you make a complaint on its website.

If you're considering making a complaint, you should gather evidence about how the service issues affected you and for how long.

For example, if it made you miss a bill or if affected your credit score.

On Tuesday (10/07/12) Barclays UK launched its app. The app allows iPhone and Android users to stay on top of their money wherever they may be.

The application allows users to access their personal or business accounts securely within a matter of seconds.
Checking your balance, making payments and locating your nearest ATM are few of many features on this app.

Any room for improvements?

Yes. Allowing users to manage multiple accounts would be a hit. Users with both personal and business accounts would need to choose one of two accounts to use the application with.

Our thoughts:

We are in an age where technology talks, the fact that Barclays has allowed its customers to manage their accounts with such ease by releasing such an application is a winner.

  1. For poems, there are multiple account types, are you using prefunded account that doesn't have minimum commission? There's also a dividend handling fee
