Bummed free unlimited storage is ending? Here’s how to export Google Photos to iCloud Photos

After launching in 2015 with free unlimited storage and marketing the service around that key feature, Google Photos has become a popular option even for Apple users. However, that’s changing as the company announced last fall that the free unlimited storage is ending on June 1. Read on for how to export Google Photos to iCloud Photos.

Instead of free unlimited storage, a 15GB limit will apply to photos and videos added from June 1, 2021. So your content that’s been previously added will remain safe. However, this will probably make some Apple users reconsider their photo strategy and take a look at the Apple One bundles.

As Google Photos transitions to the new 15GB limit, Amazon remains one of the last to offer free unlimited photo storage (for Prime members, but limits videos to 5GB on the free tier).

As for paid plans, Google One storage runs $2/month for 100GB, $3/month for 200GB, $10/month for 2TB. There are also yearly payment options at $20/$30/$100 to save some cash.

But if you’re invested in the Apple ecosystem, upgrading your iCloud storage may be a better option. Prices for iCloud storage on its own are $1/month for 50GB, $3/month for 200GB, and $10/month for 2TB.

However, you might be better off looking at the Apple One bundles that include iCloud storage to save money if you use other services like Apple Music, Apple Arcade, News+, TV+, etc.

How to export Google Photos to iCloud Photos

How to download your Google Photos library

Option 1 – download all your Google Photos in one shot

  1. You can head to takeout.google.com to download a full copy of your Google Photos library
  2. To just export photos/videos click “Deselect all” on the right-hand side
  3. Scroll or swipe down, check the box next to Google Photos
  4. Go to the very bottom and choose “Next step”
  5. Choose your preferences for the export including frequency, file type, and size
  6. Click or tap “Create export”
  7. You’ll see an “Export progress” message when the request has been submitted (note the process can take “hours or days” depending on the size of your library), look for an email from Google to know when it’s ready
  8. You can also leave the page open and you’ll see a “Download” button when the export is ready

Here’s how this looks:

Option 2 – best for downloading specific Google Photos content

Alternatively, you can head to photos.google.com on any computer or the Google Photos app on your google one app for mac, iPad, or another device to download photos and videos. This option is handy if you want to export limited photos/videos.

Mac/PC on the web

  1. On the web, head to photos.google.com and log in if you’re not already
  2. Hover over photos and click the circular check icon in the top-left corner of images
  3. You can select all google one app for mac selecting the top left photos in your library and while holding shift scroll/swipe to the bottom of your library and selecting the last image/video
  4. Now you can use the keyboard shortcut shift+D to download them, or use the vertical 3 dot icon in the top-right corner and choose “Download”

On the Google Photos iOS app

  1. Open the Google Photos app on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Long-press on a photo to select it
  3. You can long-press then drag to select lots of photos/videos or use the circle icon to select content by date range
  4. Tap the share icon at the top (square with up arrow)
  5. Choose “Share to…” at the bottom
  6. Now you can AirDrop your photos/videos or send them to your email

How to import to iCloud Photos

Now that you’ve got the photos/videos you want exported from Google, here’s how to get them into iCloud Photos.

On Mac

  1. Open the Photos app on your Mac
  2. You can drag and drop either there Takeout full download from Google Photos or a folder of folders you’ve manually downloaded from photos.google.com or the app
  3. Click Photos in the menu bar at the top of your screen
  4. Now choose Preference > iCloud > Make sure the iCloud Photos box is checked so everything will sync with your iPhone and iPad (that can be checked by heading to Settings > Photos > iCloud Photos on those devices)

Another option depending on how many google one app for mac you have would be to AirDrop them from your Mac to your iPhone or iPad that has iCloud Photos turned on. From your Mac, select the photos > right-click > Share > AirDrop.

On the web

  1. On the web, head to icloud.com and log in
  2. Choose Photos

You should download the new Google Drive for Desktop

You might be familiar with Google Drive from its web interface or its mobileapps. But desktop software is available as well, allowing you to seamlessly sync files stored in your Google Drive with the file system on your Windows or macOS computer.

After four years since its last update, that desktop software setup is changing again, and the google one app for mac tools (Backup & Sync for free account holders, and Drive File Stream for enterprise customers), will be replaced by a new, single platform called Drive for Desktop.

You can carry on accessing Google Drive in your web browser and mobile apps as always—creating Docs, Sheets, and Slides just the same as before. But if you want to keep data from Google Drive on your computer and sync it to the cloud, or if you’ve got large batches of files you need to upload to your Drive, then you’ll want to download the desktop application.

What Drive for Desktop does

Drive for Desktop turns Google Drive into a fully-fledged file syncing service rather than just a cloud storage locker—think Dropbox, OneDrive, and iCloud. When using the software, your documents will be simultaneously on your hard drive and available on the web, though you can choose which files and folders are stored locally and which aren’t.

There are a few reasons to sync files locally rather than just accessing Google Drive through your web browser every time. First, it means that if your computer is offline or has a slow internet connection, you can still watch those HD videos you’ve got stored in your Google Drive folder.

Using the desktop software also makes the uploading process much easier, as it’s a more automated process. As soon as something new moves into the local folders Google Drive is keeping an eye on, the files will be uploaded to the cloud in the background.

The new Drive for Desktop software can upload files from external drives as well, and it’s smart enough to manage multiple Google accounts at once.

If you have a second computer, then you have double the efficiency—Google Drive will keep all or some of your files and folders synced between your devices, and once you’ve installed and set up the software, everything just works.

Over the next few weeks, Google will start sending prompts in the Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream tools to encourage users to start switching over. You can keep using the old platforms, but that won’t last long—at the start of October 2021, you’ll need to update to the newer application to access your files.

How to install and use Drive for Desktop

If you’re running Backup and Sync or Drive File Stream, get rid of these programs first. 

On Windows, open the main Settings pane and choose Apps, Apps & features, the program to remove, and Uninstall. On macOS, drag the app icon down to the Trash icon on the dock or from Applications in Finder. 

At the time of writing, Google hasn’t put up a proper landing page for the new Drive for Desktop software, but you can download both Windows and macOS versions from the Google blog.

You’ll first need to sign in to your Google google one app for mac. You’ll go through a series of introduction slides, and after that, the wizard will guide you to the Google Drive folder in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (macOS), and you’ll be able to browse your files straight away. Anything you add to this Google Drive folder will automatically be uploaded to the cloud.

By default, everything is kept in the cloud and only in the cloud—the blue cloud symbol on each file icon shows that they’re not locally stored. You can use these symbols as a bookmark to know what’s stored on your system and what lives in the cloud

If you open files with the cloud symbol, they will be temporarily streamed to your computer (just like a movie or music track) so you can view and edit it. If you leave Google Drive working like this, you’ll minimize the amount of local hard drive space your files take up. The biggest caveat is that larger files may take a while to properly load as Drive for Desktop will have to download them each time you access them.

In that case, it’s better to save large files you edit a lot both on your computer and in the cloud. That way you can work on them more easily, and any edits you make to them will also be synced back to the cloud once you’re back online again. To permanently save a folder or file to your disk, so you can access it even while offline, right-click (or Cmd+click on a Mac) on it and choose Offline access and Available offline

The same right-click (or Cmd+click) menu offers plenty of other options as well: You can revert back to a previous version of a file for example, or get a link to share it with someone else. These same options are accessible through the Google Drive web interface as well, as they’ve always been, but you might find it easier to get at them from your Windows or macOS computer.

You can find a few more options on the Settings pane. Click the Drive icon in the notification area (Windows) or on the menu bar (macOS), then click the cog icon and pick Preferences. The screen that appears enables you to have the program start up at google one app for mac same time as the operating system, and you can choose to move the location of the Google Drive folder on the local hard drive if you want to.

You can use Google One VPN in 10 new countries now

Back in October last year, Google launched a new VPN service and bundled it for free with selected Google One plans. The addition was an excellent way to offer more bang for the buck to subscribers paying for 2TB or more storage space. The VPN service was initially only available in the United States before expanding to Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, and Italy earlier this year. Now, as a part of the Cybersecurity Awareness Month initiative, the Google One VPN service is being expanded to 10 additional EU countries for a total of 18.

The new locales are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. Google is in the process of rolling out this out so the feature should be available for all eligible subscribers in the coming days. When it arrives, you'll be able to enable the VPN with just a tap from the Google One app on your Android device or iPhone.

There's no option for Google One subscribers on a lower-tier plan to pay solely for the VPN service. If you want to use it, you must subscribe to a 2TB or higher storage plan, where the VPN is bundled for free. While VPN by Google One is available for Android and iPhone, a dedicated Windows or Mac app is still missing, limiting its usefulness to a certain extent.

Google is throwing in a free VPN with Google One to tempt you into upgrading to its premium cloud storage tier.

Google announced the launch of the VPN today, which comes bundled in with the company’s Google One 2 TB storage plan.

You need to subscribe to at least the 2TB Google One plan, which costs $10 per month in the US, to access the new perk. Google said you can leverage the VPN feature while using any app on your Android phone. Better yet, if you’ve set up family sharing with Google One, five other people can access the VPN, too.

Google One is a premium storage plan from Google, which has some other benefits too. Starting from 100 GB, the plans go all the way up to 30TB. Usually, Google gives you 15GB free storage and unlimited high-quality photo storage via Google Photos. However, you can backup your pictures in uncompressed original resolution without worrying about running out of space if you have a Google One plan.

Plus, as a Google One member, you can schedule an online “Pro Session” with Google to learn how to use the VPN feature. In fact, Google said you can schedule a session at any time to get expert help on a wide range of topics at both “basic and advanced levels”. You’ll receive an email confirmation and a Google invitation when you sign up for a Pro Session. The invitation will include a link to join an online screen share session with an expert at your scheduled time.

Alternatively, you can head to photos.google.com on any computer or the Google Photos app on your iPhone, iPad, or another device to download photos and videos. This option is handy if you want to export limited photos/videos.

Mac/PC on the web

  1. On the web, head to photos.google.com and log in if you’re not already
  2. Hover over photos and click the circular check icon in the top-left corner of images
  3. You can select all by selecting the top left photos in your library and while holding shift scroll/swipe to the bottom of your library and selecting the last image/video
  4. Now you can use the keyboard shortcut shift+D to download them, or use the vertical 3 dot icon in the top-right corner and choose “Download”

On the Google Photos iOS app

  1. Open the Google Photos app on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Long-press on a photo to select it
  3. You can long-press then drag to select lots of photos/videos or use the circle icon to select content by date range
  4. Tap the share icon at the top (square with up arrow)
  5. Choose “Share to…” at the bottom
  6. Now you can AirDrop your photos/videos or send them to your email

How to import to iCloud Photos

Now that you’ve got the photos/videos you want exported from Google, here’s how to get them into iCloud Photos.

On Mac

  1. Open the Photos app on your Mac
  2. You can drag and drop either there Takeout full download from Google Photos or a folder of folders you’ve manually downloaded from photos.google.com or the app
  3. Click Photos in the menu bar at the top of your screen
  4. Now choose Preference > iCloud > Make sure the iCloud Photos box is checked so everything will sync with your iPhone and iPad (that can be checked by heading to Settings > Photos > iCloud Photos on those devices)

Another option depending on how many photos/videos you have would be to AirDrop them from your Mac to your iPhone or iPad that has iCloud Photos turned on. From your Mac, select the photos > right-click > Share > AirDrop.

On the web

  1. On the web, head to icloud.com and log in
  2. Choose Photos
  3. Click the cloud icon with up arrow to upload photos
  4. With the way the Google Photos Takeout export works, you can’t import everything from the download (it separates all photos/videos by date into different folders) so you’ll either need to manually move things around to import via icloud.com or it may be best to use the Photos app option above

We all know Google Drive, so it probably needs no introduction. But let’s not presume. If you must know, Google Drive is a cloud storage and synchronisation service. With Google Drive, Google users get to store their files on Google servers which they can synchronise and access and also share across devices.

Perhaps its best feature yet is Google’s very own Office productivity suite which comprises Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides and Google Forms. Users can create docs, spreadsheets, presentations, forms and more at no extra cost, which are all automatically saved on Google Drive.

Not quite done with us, Google Drive also offers downloadable apps for Mac/iOS, Windows, and Android devices, giving users the capability to offline. That’s it in-browser isn’t your thing.

As long as you have a Google account, you are indeed legible for a free storage service limited to a sizable 15GB of storage. And as you know, Google Drive storage is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.

So then, what’s Google One?

Google One

Google One is a subscription-based plan you can upgrade to once you exceed Google’s free 15GB cap. After you upgrade from your free storage plan, a Google One membership replaces your current Drive storage plan. Google One’s paid offering starts at 100GB to as much as 30TB of storage with a lineup of subscription plans to choose from depending on your usage.

Google One benefits, storage size & cost

Once you become a paying subscriber, Google One gives you access to Google experts, the option to add family members and extra member benefits. What these benefits are, I can’t say as they vary from country to country.

Some of them include Google Play credits and preferred pricing on select hotels (up to 40%) found in Google Search. Why Google is dabbling in accommodation is a mystery for another day.

  • 100GB: $1.99/month ($19.99/year)
  • 200GB: $2.99/month ($29.99/year)
  • 2TB: $9.99/month ($99.99/year)
  • 10TB: $99.99/month
  • 20TB: $199.99/month

Google One users can’t buy storage through Google Drive

Due to reasons only Google knows, it’s Google One users can no longer buy storage through Google Drive as has been the case. A free Google account holder is automatically upgraded to a Google One user once they upgrade.

However, for G-Suite users, it’s business as usual. Interestingly, you only need to upgrade your storage on the Basic plan (see image above). The storage sizes and prices are exactly the same as those under the Google One plans. The Business and Enterprise plans offer unlimited cloud storage or 1TB per user if there are 5 users or less.
