Square’s Cash App opens up to teens ages 13 to 17 with parental oversight

Amid a growing number of banking apps aimed at teens, Square Inc.’s Cash App today is broadening its reach by making its payments app available to younger teens between the ages of 13 and 17. Previously, the app required users to be at least 18 years old, like rival Venmo. The company says younger teens will need to get a parent or guardian to authorize their account, but can then begin to send peer-to-peer payments and take delivery of a customized Cash Card, powered by Visa.

The Cash Card, essentially a Visa debit card tied to the teen’s Cash App account, can be personalized using the Cash App mobile app. Teens (or any user, really) can pick out the card’s color, add stamps, draw on it. or even make it glow in the dark, the company’s website explains. Currently, the standard card comes in black or white, while custom cards like the Glow in the Dark version or limited-edition 100 Thieves card are $5 to purchase.

In addition, teens will be able to send and receive peer-to-peer payments with family and friends, or anyone else on Cash App’s network of over 40 million monthly active users. Other features also mirror the existing version of Cash App, including access to spending rewards at top retailers, ATM access with a $2 fee and support for paycheck direct deposit.

However, teens will not be able to access either Bitcoin or stock investing at this time, the company notes. Other features limited to users 18 and up include Borrow, Check Deposit, Paper Money Deposit and cross-border payments.

The teens’ accounts are designed to be managed with parental oversight. Parents who authorize Cash App for their kids are the account’s legal owner and will be able to review their teen’s monthly activity through Statements. They’ll also be able to pause or cancel the teen’s account and Cash Card at any time.

Like some other banking services aimed at teens, there are also restrictions about where Cash Card can be used, based on merchant categories. How do i put money on my cash app card Cash App’s case, younger teens can’t use the card at bars and clubs, liquor stores, cigar stores, hotels or other lodgings, or for lottery tickets, casinos or gambling, bail and bond payments, or car rentals.

The company believes the expansion will open Cash App to a large market of new users, noting that there are approximately 20 million teens in the U.S. today, who will soon represent a greater portion of spending power in the years to come.

The expansion comes at a time when Cash App has become one of the fastest-growing digital payments apps in the U.S. Today, it counts 70 million annual transacting customers and, recently, introduced tighter integrations with parent company Square, Inc. via the September launch of Cash App Pay, a Cash App-based checkout experience for Square merchants.

The company’s growth also benefitted from the broader shift to digital payments that took place during the pandemic and its support for accepting users’ COVID stimulus checks and unemployment benefits. In 2021, it generated a gross profit of $546 million, up 94% year-over-year. This growth has put Cash App within striking distance of Venmo, which as of its most recent report had 76 million users. Now, by opening up to a new teenage userbase, Cash App could close that gap even further.

However, Cash App won’t be without its competition. The mobile banking market has seen a number of entrants in recent years developing solutions aimed at addressing the needs of teenage users and their families, like Greenlight, Step, Current, Revolut, Till Financial,Go Henry and others how do i put money on my cash app card the U.S. But what Cash App may have how do i put money on my cash app card for it is that its app is not just a “teen banking service” — it’s an app that users can continue to use even when they age up.

The Cash App for teens is available starting today across iOS food assistance colorado Android in the U.S. Teens and families can learn more through the dedicated website, cash.app/13+.

Trying to add money to your Cash App debit card?

Recently, I’ve had several people ask me if I know how and where to go to add physical money to a Cash App account without using a bank so I did several hours of research and trial/error to try to find out. This is what I discovered.

In general, the only way to add physical cash to your Cash App account at a store and without a bank account is by purchasing a Green Dot MoneyPak card, loading cash onto it, and then linking that MonkeyPak card to your Cash App account.

Honestly, I was a bit surprised how much misinformation I came across online when trying to research how to properly do this with many claiming you could load cash onto your Cash App account at a cash register in a store (which isn’t true).

So if a Green Dot MoneyPak card works, are there other debit cards that work too?

Currently, Cash App has right around 30 million active monthly users. (1)

With such a huge user base, it’s not surprising that some people would like to use Cash App without needing a bank.

How to Use Cash App for Your Business: The Complete Guide

Listen To This Article

Voiced by Amazon Polly

Cash App, also called Square Cash, appeared in 2013 as a simple app for peer-to-peer payments and was expanded for business use in 2015. This new cash app might be the answer for small businesses looking for a quick and easy way to accept payments or add another payment option for customers. However, some of its limitations could hold you back from realizing your goals for growth.

Check out how Square Cash for Business works to see if it’s the right fit for your payment processing needs.

square cash app woman phone

The Basics of Using Square Cash for Business

Square Cash has one purpose: sending and receiving payments. Unlike the Square’s main point-of-sale (POS) product, it offers no tools for managing employees, tracking inventory or generating reports. You simply get an account with a unique username, also called a “cashtag,” which customers can use to send payments to your business.

  Get Your Business Financed!

Along with the cashtag, Square gives Cash App business users a payment page with a custom URL. Customers pay by clicking a link on your website or visiting cash.me/YourCashtag. Just like hashtags or social media handles, cashtags are suitable for adding to your business card and marketing campaigns to let customers know Square Cash is an option for payment.

Customers already using Square Cash can send payments right from the app, which is available for iOS and Android, but an account isn’t required to pay through your cash.me page. All transactions incur a 2.75 percent fee, but deposits are free if you don’t need access to the money right away. For instant transfers, Square charges 1.5 percent of the balance.

When tax time rolls around, businesses that processed 200 or more payments totaling over $20,000 during the year receive a 1099-K form for reporting purposes.

Setting Up a Cash App Business Account

To get started with Square Cash for Business, you create an account either through the app or on the cash.app website. Your account may be linked to either a mobile number or an email address. Square sends a confirmation message with a special passcode via text or email, which then becomes the login for your account. After logging in, you’re prompted to confirm your first and last name and link a debit card.

Cash App accounts are personal by default, but it’s easy to switch. Go into the app settings, choose the Personal menu and change the account type to business. If at any point you need to know how to change Cash App from business back to personal, you should be able to do it from the same menu.

Finish linking Square Cash to your business by:

  • Adding your business bank account information
  • Creating a branded cashtag customers will recognize
  • Embedding your cash.me link in your website
  • Advertising that you now accept Square Cash payments!

Benefits and Drawbacks of Square Cash App Sign Up

As a pared-down version of Square POS, Cash App works best for small businesses that don’t need or want a ton of extra features and don’t handle a large volume of payments. Signing up is easy and quick, so you can start accepting mobile and credit card payments almost immediately.

Getting paid is simple, too. No extra equipment is required, not even a credit card swiper. All you need is your account and cashtag. Customers with Cash App accounts can search your business by cashtag, email address or phone number to send you a payment in the app, or you can send requests to Cash How do i put money on my cash app card users. The cash.me link expands the functionality by allowing anyone to pay online using a credit or debit card.

Using Square Cash for Business allows you to take more payment types without the need for a merchant account or pricey payment processor. This may be preferable if you’re just starting out and can’t afford an elaborate POS system or if your business deals primarily in low-volume online sales.

However, choosing Cash App instead of a more full-featured option has its downsides:

  • Payments are limited to $1,000 per month (unless you verify your account with more detailed personal information)
  • No overseas payments may be made or accepted
  • Businesses can’t use the Square Cash Visa debit card or its “Boost” discounts
  • Support is only available via email and social media
  • Square reserves the right to hold funds or terminate your account if deemed necessary

Once you start regularly passing the $1,000 per month mark in sales, you’ll have to either provide Square with your full name, date of birth and the last four digits of your social security number to increase your limits or upgrade to a more robust POS option.

Services Make Budgeting with a Business Cash App Easier

Because Square Cash for Business doesn’t have any of the bells and whistles of more sophisticated payment apps, you’ll need other services to track and manage your cash flow. You only have so much time in the day, and you want to be able to devote it to connecting with customers, making sales and growing your business instead of balancing your books. Outsourcing your accounting duties to a professional bookkeeper makes handling payments and managing expenses easier, minimizes errors and saves both time and money.

If you’re determined to grow your business, then streamlining the payment process with a smooth, hassle-free procedure is key. Upgrading to Square’s advanced POS software keeps your payment portal reliable, with customized options unique to your business model. While costly, utilizing Square’s advanced POS system is a necessary step along the road to growing your business.

Customers with Cash App accounts can search your business by cashtag, email address or phone number to send you a payment in the app, or you can send requests to Cash App users.

Cash App review

What is Cash App?

Cash App is a peer-to-peer digital payment app backed by Square that allows you to send and receive money through your bank account using your debit card. Cash App is often used to pay friends or family — for instance, after getting dinner together or splitting the cost of a trip.

Your Cash App account comes with a Visa debit card — called a Cash App Cash Card — that you can use to pay for goods and services in the US from your Cash App balance without involving your bank account or personal credit card.

How does Cash App work?

Cash App works by sending money from your bank account to your recipient’s Cash App balance. You can pay someone through Cash App using their phone number or email, and they’ll be sent a link to claim the payment if they aren’t a Cash App user.

Some unique things to know about Cash App:

  • You must be 18 or older to open an account.
  • You can receive direct deposit payments to your Cash App balance.
  • Your $Cashtag is your unique way to receive payments.
  • All money received through Cash App will be stored in your balance until you withdraw it.

Compare Cash App to other domestic money transfer services to see which is best for you.

Why should I use Cash App?

  • Makes paying friends and family straightforward. Whether you’re splitting dinner or paying your brother back for a tuxedo rental, Cash App makes moving money a breeze.
  • Buy/sell Bitcoin and stocks. Cash App lets you buy and sell stocks and Bitcoin directly from the app.
  • No fees. Using Cash Apps standard service can be done for free, but certain features like expedited withdrawal may cost extra.

What should I watch out for with Cash App?

  • US only. You can’t use Cash App to send money abroad, even if Cash App is available in the country you’re trying to send to.
  • Low limits. Your sending limits will be capped until you verify your account by providing identification.
  • No sending protection. Cash App is intended for personal transfers to people you know, so treat Cash App payments like sending cash.

How to use Cash App

There are multiple things you can do with Cash App, including sending and receiving money, buying and selling Bitcoin, accepting direct deposits and adding funds to spend on your Cash App card. Before you can do any of these, you’ll need to create your Cash App account by downloading the app and creating an account.

Cash App limits

A new Cash App account is limited to sending $250 per week, but identity verification can quickly lift this:

Non-verified accounts

  • Send: $250/week
  • Receive: $1,000/month

Verified accounts

  • Send: $2,500/week
  • Receive: Unlimited

You must verify your identity to increase your transaction limits. You must be at least 18 years old to become verified with your full name, date of birth and the last four digits of your SSN. If Cash App can’t verify your ID, it might require additional information.

Cash App fees

Cash App charges a 3% fee when paying by credit card and a 1.5% fee for instant transfers. Cash app fees can often be avoided by choosing the slower option and by never paying by credit card. Some fees, like ATM charges, will be reimbursed — up to 3 times per month and up to $7 per withdrawal — if you receive at least $300 in direct deposits to your Cash App account each month.

ATMs and your Cash Card

If you’ve signed up for the Cash App Cash Card, which is free, you can withdraw money from your Cash App balance through ATMs. Cash App will charge you for using ATMs, by default, and the ATM may also charge you additional fees. Before using your Cash Card at an ATM, keep in mind that:

  • Limits apply – A max of $310 per transaction and $1,000 per 7-day period can be withdrawn.
  • You can avoid fees – Up to 3 ATM withdrawals per 31 days will be reimbursed if you receive paycheck direct deposits to your Cash App account that total more than $300 per month.
  • There’s a cap on reimbursement – A maximum of $7 will be reimbursed per withdrawal, meaning a cap of $21 per 31-day period will be reimbursed.

Cash App reviews and complaints

Cash App has a poor rating on Trustpilot, ranking in at 1.2 out of 5 stars with 2,144 customer reviews. Many of the reviews discuss fraudulent transactions, a struggle to verify accounts and poor customer service. However, given that Cash App is primarily a mobile app, it might be worth taking into account the high ratings that Cash App has on both Google Play and the App Store.

Google Play Store4.2 out of 5 — based on 245,450 customer reviews
Apple App Store4.5 out of 5 — based on 400,300 customer reviews

Forums like Reddit are more positive in their Cash App feedback, but not entirely. Recent complaints include lacking customer support, declined transactions with limited details and sudden closures of Cash App accounts — one while waiting for a Bitcoin transaction.

Is Cash App safe?

Cash App is owned by Square, a financial payments company that was launched in 2009 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s Co-founder. Cash App is PCI Data Security Standard Level 1 compliant, which is the highest level of data compliance in the payment industry. Additionally:

  • Cash App encrypts all financial transactions.
  • Encourages you to protect your account with 2-factor authentication and biometrics.
  • Monitors accounts for fraudulent activity.
  • Handles millions of transactions a year.

However, your account is only as safe as you allow it to be. Never give out your password, open any suspicious Cash App related emails or send money through Cash App to people you don’t know.

Bottom line

If you’re looking for a simple peer-to-peer payment app with no debit card fees, Cash App is worth considering. But with opaque fees, a focus on Bitcoin and multiple customer complaints, you may want to compare top mobile payment apps first.

And if you need to send money for business, rather than to friends and family, you’ll want to compare other Square products.

Frequently asked questions

You can retrieve your money without it. After you receive a text or an email from the app, you’re asked to enter a bank account or debit card information to receive your deposit.

How long does the Cash App take to deposit into a bank account?

  • Standard. Up to three business days.
  • Instant. Nearly immediately with a fee equal to 1.5% of your transaction.

Only use Instant transfers when you’re willing to pay the fee.

How do I change the email or phone number on my Cash App account?

  1. Tap the profile icon from the Cash App home screen.
  2. Tap Personal.
  3. Tap the phone number or email you want to change.

  4. Confirm your new PIN by entering it a second time.

Can I refund a payment?

Are Cash App and Snapchat linked?

Yes. Snapchat’s payment system, Snapcash, is also powered by Square. Add your debit card information to your Snapchat, open a private message to a friend, type in a dollar amount and Snapchat recognizes that you’re trying to send or request money. The rest of the process works like Cash App.

Where Can I Load my Cash App Card (Answered)?

The only way to really add physical cash to your Cash App account at a store is by purchasing a Green Dot MoneyPak card and using cash to load money onto that card and then linking that card to your Cash App account.

To clarify, it has to be a Green Dot MoneyPak card specifically. Pretty much all other options pre-paid debit card options simply don’t work with Cash App.

So despite what you may be read online, you can’t just go to a local store and add cash to your Cash App account or debit card – at least not by doing what they are suggesting.

Let’s take a look at exactly what you need to do.

How to Add Physical Cash to Cash App in Store (3 Simple Steps)

As we have already established, you can’t directly load or add physical cash to a Cash App account or debit card at a store without using a Green Dot MoneyPak card.

This is the step-by-step process in how you can properly set things up so you can add cash in-store to your Cash App account.

With over 70,000 retailers nationwide that carry Green Dot MoneyPak cards (including Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, 7-Eleven, Dollar General, and many others), finding a store that has them should be pretty easy for you in most cases. (2)

2) Take Your cash and Load it onto Your Green Dot MoneyPak Card

This process really couldn’t be much easier.

All you need to do is load your cash onto your Green Dot MoneyPak card.

A cashier at the store your at should be able to complete this process for you. You can load between $20 and $500.

Keep in mind, adding funds to your Green Dot MoneyPak card isn’t free and will cost you a flat fee of $5.95.

3) Use Your Green Dot MoneyPak Card with Cash App

Once the money has been loaded onto your Green Dot MoneyPak card, you’ll have to go through the process of setting up a free account with Green Dot.

Setting up an account should only be a one-time requirement though so adding cash to your Cash App account in the future should be much faster.

Then you’d use the code that you scratch off on the back of your MoneyPak card to access the money.

Once the money is available on your Green Dot MoneyPak card, you should be all set with using it with Cash App.

Accept Payments with Cash App Pay

Back to Home

Customers can complete their payments on your Square POS or Square Online site using Cash App.

Paying with Cash App simplifies in-person contactless transactions at your POS, providing your customers an alternative payment method to complete their purchases and helping your business avoid the need to process card-not-present transactions. During the checkout process at your POS, you can choose Cash App Pay as the customer’s payment method to generate a unique QR code on your device screen. They then scan the code from their mobile device using Cash App to make their payment.

Online payments with Cash App are also simplified. Customers on the desktop version of your Square Online site will scan a QR code in the same way they would at your Square POS. If your customer is buying from your mobile site and has Cash App installed, they'll simply tap a Cash App button during checkout to start paying.

Note: Cash App Pay is currently available for businesses processing payments on Square Register, Square Stand, Square Terminal, Square Online, and the Square Point of Sale app for iOS and Android devices. Paying with Cash App is not available through Square for Restaurants, Square for Retail, Square Appointments, or Square Invoices at this time.

Accept Payments

Accepting payments with Cash App Pay will depend on your setup.

Square Register comes with a built-in customer-facing display separate from your Register screen that allows customers to see their cart, total cost, and the option to add a tip. The customer-facing display is also where they will scan the Cash App Pay QR code.

To accept Cash App Pay on your Register:

  1. When the customer’s cart is fully built, tap Charge $X.XX.
  2. Select Cash App Pay as the payment method.
  3. When the QR code generates on the customer-facing display, have them scan it with Cash App on their mobile device. Your customer-facing display will then prompt them to add a tip to the sale. Note: Tips can’t be added via Cash App at this time.

When the transaction processes successfully, the sale is complete.

Note: If the customer scans the QR code while the cart is being built, when you tap Charge, your Register will automatically detect that the customer scanned the QR code and will process the payment. You won’t have to select Cash App Pay as the payment method in this instance.

On Square Stand and tablets

Square Stand allows you to turn your tablet into an easy-to-use point-of-sale device. Although Stand doesn’t come with a customer-facing display, you can connect your own display device or easily swivel your Stand so your customer can view the screen during checkout. If you aren’t using Stand but are using a standalone iOS or Android tablet, customers can still pay with Cash App through your device.

To accept Cash App Pay on your Stand or tablet:

  1. When the customer’s cart is fully built, tap Charge $X.XX.

When the transaction processes successfully, the sale is complete.

Reporting

All payments completed via Cash App will be reflected as the Cash App tender type in your sales reports. Cash App payments will appear in reports found through your online Square Dashboard and the mobile Reports applet on POS.

Refunds

Cash App Pay transactions originating from the stored balance in the app will be refunded to the customer’s Cash App account balance. Cash App Pay transactions originating from a linked debit card or bank account will be refunded to the original card or bank account.

Disputes

Just like other types of payment disputes, buyers can file disputes for Cash App payments for two types of reasons:

  • Fraud: The buyer claims that they never participated in the transaction and that their account or card was stolen and used by a fraudster. Sellers who receive a fraud dispute from Cash App Pay are covered entirely by Cash App and owe no money for the dispute. They don't have to take any action to receive this coverage; however, this coverage doesn't apply to any other payment methods.

  • Non-fraud: The buyer acknowledges that they made the payment themselves but that the goods or services they purchased either weren’t delivered or satisfactory to what they thought they would receive. Cash App does not cover sellers who receive a non-fraud dispute from Cash App Pay. Sellers must follow the normal dispute process, wherein they can choose to challenge the dispute with evidence and, upon review of the dispute from either Cash App or the cardholder’s bank, either win or lose. This process is similar to how all other non-Cash App Pay disputes are handled.

Troubleshooting

In cases where your customer has trouble using Cash App Pay, here are some troubleshooting tips.

If a customer is having trouble with the QR code scanner in their Cash App, you can suggest they try the following:

  • Make sure both the mobile device and the app are up to date.
  • Turn the mobile device off and on again.
  • Force quit the app on the device and log back in.
  • Delete and reinstall Cash App.
  • Make sure the ability to scan QR codes on the mobile device is enabled.
  • Scan the QR code with a smartphone camera or third-party QR code scanning app.

Customers who attempt to use a third-party scanning app to scan a Cash App QR code while logged out of Cash App will need to log in and attempt the payment again.

If a customer makes a payment using Cash App but doesn’t have enough funds in their balance, Square will attempt to pull the entire payment from the customer’s linked debit card or bank account in their Cash App profile. If there is no linked payment source in their Cash App, the payment will decline.

Customer doesn’t have Cash App

Customers who haven’t downloaded Cash App to their mobile device can’t use the Cash App Pay feature until they do. When the customer scans the QR code, a link will open on their device and prompt them to download and sign up for Cash App.
