Square’s Cash App opens up to teens ages 13 to 17 with parental oversight

Amid a growing number of banking apps aimed at teens, Square Inc.’s Cash App today is broadening its reach by making its payments app available to younger teens between the ages of 13 and 17. Previously, the app required users to be at least 18 years old, like rival Venmo. The company says younger teens will need to get a parent or guardian to authorize their account, but can then begin to send peer-to-peer payments and take delivery of a customized Cash Card, powered by Visa.

The Cash Card, essentially a Visa debit card tied to the teen’s Cash App account, can be personalized using the Cash App mobile app. Teens (or any user, really) can pick out the card’s color, add stamps, draw on it. or even make it glow in the dark, the company’s website explains. Currently, the standard card comes in black or white, while custom cards like the Glow in the Dark version or limited-edition 100 Thieves card are $5 to purchase.

In addition, teens will be able to send and receive peer-to-peer payments with family and friends, or anyone else on Cash App’s network of over 40 million monthly active users. Other features also mirror the existing version of Cash App, including access to spending rewards at top retailers, ATM access with a $2 fee and support for paycheck direct deposit.

However, teens will not be able to access either Bitcoin or stock investing at this time, the company notes. Other features limited to users 18 and up include Borrow, Check Deposit, Paper Money Deposit and cross-border payments.

The teens’ accounts are designed to be managed with parental oversight. Parents who authorize Cash App for their kids are the account’s legal owner and will be able to review their teen’s monthly activity through Statements. They’ll also be able to pause or cancel the teen’s account and Cash Card at any time.

Like some other banking services aimed at teens, there are also restrictions about where Cash Card can be used, based on merchant categories. In Cash App’s case, younger teens can’t use the card at bars and clubs, liquor stores, cigar stores, hotels or other lodgings, or for lottery tickets, casinos or gambling, bail and bond payments, or car rentals.

The company believes the expansion will open Cash App to a large market of new users, noting that there are approximately 20 million teens in the U.S. today, who will soon represent a greater portion of spending power in the years to come.

The expansion comes at a time when Cash App has become one of the fastest-growing digital payments apps in the U.S. Today, it counts 70 million annual transacting customers and, recently, introduced tighter integrations with parent company Square, Inc. via the September launch of Cash App Pay, a Cash App-based checkout experience for Square merchants.

The company’s growth also benefitted from the broader shift to digital payments that took place during the pandemic and its support for accepting users’ COVID stimulus checks and unemployment benefits. In 2021, it generated a gross profit of $546 million, up 94% year-over-year. This growth has put Cash App within striking distance of Venmo, which as of its most recent report had 76 million users. Now, by opening up to a new teenage userbase, Cash App could close that gap even further.

However, Cash App won’t be without its competition. The mobile banking market has seen a number of entrants in recent years developing solutions aimed at addressing the needs of teenage users and their families, like Greenlight, Step, Current, Revolut, Till Financial,Go Henry and others outside the U.S. But what Cash App may have going for it is that its app is not just a “teen banking service” — it’s an app that users can continue to use even when they age up.

The Cash App for teens is available starting today across iOS and Android in the U.S. Teens and families can learn more through the dedicated website, cash.app/13+.

How to send, receive money using Cash App

You probably know Cash App, even if you’ve never heard of it before. Formerly called “Square Cash,” it’s been renamed and rebranded.

Owned by Square (which is helmed by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey), the app allows consumers to send and receive money, link to an existing bank account, or spend money directly from Cash App with a dedicated debit card.

Users can also set up direct deposits to their Cash App account.

What is Cash App?

Cash App is a peer-to-peer payment app that allows individuals to send and receive money to friends and family. They can also use the optional linked debit card to shop or hit an ATM.

Consumer Reports’s study of peer-to-peer payment apps gave it a 64 on a scale of one to 100 (with 100 being a perfect score). It earned good marks for data security, customer support and accessibility (across a range of devices and for those without bank accounts). But evaluators felt the app could do better on payment authentication and privacy.

Cash App is available for iPhone and Android users.

How does Cash App work?

Cash App is a peer-to-peer payment app, so you can use it to send, receive and request money. Instead of an account number, you’re known on the network by your email address or phone number. Or you can create a unique identifier known as a $Cashtag.

If you receive money, it lands in your Cash App account. Or you can link Cash App to an existing bank account and use that to transfer money to and from the Cash App account. You can also send money from a debit card and spend your Cash App balance directly from that. The app also allows users to receive direct deposits (like a paycheck), to their accounts.

Two caveats: You must be at least 18 to open an account. And U.S. users can make payments to U.S.-based recipients only, according to a company spokesperson. (UK residents can use Cash App to send and receive money within the UK.)

Does Cash App have a limit on how much I can transfer or receive?

Cash App has a transfer limit for how much you can send and how much you can receive. Users are allowed to send “up to $250 within any seven-day period and receive up to $1,000 within any 30-day period,” according to the website.

Once you’ve verified your account by giving information like your name, date of birth, etc., those limits are lifted, according to a Cash App representative.

Additionally, if you have a Cash App debit card, you can use ATMs to withdraw up to $250 at a time; $1,000 in a seven-day period, and $1,250 in 30-day period. And you can also get cash back at the register, if the merchant allows it.

How much does Cash App cost?

It’s free to send, receive and transfer money.

And while Cash App doesn’t charge ATM fees, you’re responsible for any fees levied by the ATM networks.

How quickly does the other party receive money sent through Cash App?

Money can be sent and received instantly through the app, according to the site.

Adding or depositing money to your Cash App account can take from one to three days, depending on your bank, the site reports.

You can also opt for Instant Deposits to your bank account, which are immediate, but come with a 1.5 percent fee, according to a company representative.

Direct deposits can take one to three days, depending on the sender’s bank, the representative explained.

Are Cash App transactions public?

No. And the Consumer Reports study found “they’re actually pretty transparent about data security and data privacy, just not as private as the top performers,” says Christina Tetreault, senior policy counsel for Consumer Reports.

If you send money to the wrong person or for the wrong amount using Cash App, that money could be gone permanently.

Is money in a Cash App account FDIC-insured?

Not at this time, according to a company representative.

What happens if I send the wrong amount or send it to the wrong person?

That money could be gone permanently. The Cash App site states that “payments are instant and usually can’t be canceled.” It directs users to “look at your activity feed to see if the payment receipt is displaying a cancel option.”

If not, the option it gives you is to use the app to ask the recipient to refund the money.

And while you can request help through the app or the company website, you can’t contact the company via phone or email, according to a representative for Cash App.

The Consumer Reports study did find that a large number of complaints about Cash App involved that aspect of the service, says Tetreault.

“There are a lot of great FAQ responses, but for folks looking for the personal touch, this could be not so easy,” she says.

And that problem isn’t unique to Cash App, she says.

With any service involving your money, “consumers should have multiple and plentiful ways to resolve issues,” Tetreault says.

Tip: Interested in other mobile P2P apps? Read our guides to Venmo, Zelle, Google Pay and Popmoney to learn more.

Does Cash App offer its own cards?

Yes. Once you sign up for an account, you can request a free debit card.

Cash App doesn’t offer credit cards.

Is the money sent via Cash App protected against loss, fraud and theft?

The Cash App account and debit card would fall under the new prepaid card regulations, which took effect April 1, says Tetreault.

That means if you have unauthorized charges and report them within two days, your losses are limited to $50.

You can also temporarily disable the card if you’ve lost it, according to the company’s site.

But if you actually authorize sending money to someone (to the wrong person, in the wrong amount or to a recipient for merchandise that isn’t as promised), you’re not protected, says Tetreault.

Can Cash App users earn credit card rewards and loyalty points?

Cash App has a rewards program called “Boost.” It allows you to link Cash App deals to your Cash App debit card. (You can select just one deal at a time.)When you make a purchase, the discount is automatically deducted from the purchase price – like a coupon. You also have the option to earn rewards in the form of Bitcoin.

The card also gives $1 off for purchases at coffee shops.

Use these services – any peer-to-peer services – only with people you know and trust.

Do I need extra security while using Cash App?

Cash App allows you to add a PIN code or fingerprint ID to make payments. (The PIN will be the same as with your Cash App debit card, if you have one, according to the company site.)

Patrick Jackson, chief technology officer for online privacy firm Disconnect, gives them good marks for security and encryption. “They take an extra level of added security,” he says.

That said, since you’re dealing with your money, you want to make sure you’re also using optional security features and good computer practices.

[myfinance]If you can’t get to your private network, skip public Wi-Fi in favor of your phone’s digital network, says Jackson, whose company assisted with Consumer Reports’s in-depth study of peer-to-peer payment offerings.

Tetreault echoes the recommendation to enable all available security options in the app and on your device.

“We recommend turning on the security features so that there’s a layer of protection,” she says. Also smart: setting alerts for transactions.

Also, even though you’re still technically on social media, think like a banking customer when you evaluate, select and use peer-to-peer payment services, says Tetreault.

“People are confident with the [social media-based] system because they use it with people they know and trust,” she says. Adopt the same strategy if you’re sending money.

Says Tetreault, “Use these services – any peer-to-peer services – only with people you know and trust.”

Do you have to pay or collect payments using multiple payment apps? You should know how to transfer funds from Cash App to PayPal so that you can easily transfer funds between the two seamlessly.

Keep reading to learn two unique ways to transfer money between Cash App and Paypal.

With Your Bank Account

While Cash App and PayPal are two of the most popular payment apps, they don't connect directly. However, that doesn't mean you can use money you get through Cash App when paying for things in PayPal.

The easiest way for most people to transfer money from Cash App to PayPal is with a bank account. You can use a checking or savings account, but the account needs to be able to take deposits and handle withdrawals.

If you use a savings account, make sure you don't reach the maximum number of withdrawals per cycle. A checking account will probably be easier if you have one.

View Your Cash App Balance

The first thing you will do to transfer money to PayPal is to check your Cash App balance. Make sure you have the money in there that you want to transfer to PayPal or that you have a buffer within your bank account to cover the difference.

In the app, you'll tap on the dollar sign icon to see how much money you have. If you want to keep saving up, you can do so, or you can cash out on the money to start the transfer process.

Cash Out

On the balance screen, you will see the options to Add Cash or Cash Out. You'll want to select Cash Out to move the money from Cash App to your bank.

The standard transfer option can take up to three business days, but it is free. If you need the money immediately, you will need to pay a small fee for the transfer, but that can be useful on weekends and holidays.

You also don't have to transfer your full balance, which is nice if you need to pay for something through Cash App. Transfer the amount you want so that you can get the money you need.

Log Into PayPal

If you transfer the money instantly, it will show up in your bank account, but you should check to make sure. When you use the standard option, check your bank balance for the next few days.

Once you have the money in your bank, the steps are similar to transferring money from other apps, like Venmo. You'll need to log into your PayPal account on your computer.

You can view your PayPal balance and check on your payment methods. If you haven't transferred money from a bank yet, you should connect to the account in question using your PayPal settings.

Transfer Money

Next, you'll find the option to Transfer Money right under your PayPal balance. You can transfer money in or out using this button, and you should see this option on the website.

If that doesn't work, you can click the three dots at the top right of the balance. Then, select Add Money, and you'll see a list of the bank accounts you've connected to PayPal.

You can also keep the money in your bank account and use the account to pay for stuff through PayPal. That way, you can also use the money for other purchases.

With Your Cash App Card

If you don't want to use your bank account, you can also apply for and use a Cash App card. The card works like any debit card you would get from a bank, so you can use your Cash App balance on PayPal.

Because it's a debit card, you'll need to add the card as a payment method in PayPal. You won't be able to transfer money to your balance since it isn't a bank account, though.

Request a Cash App Card

If you don't already have a Cash App card, you'll need to request one. You can only get a Cash Card if you're at least 18, and it can take about 10 days for the card to arrive.

On your home screen, you can select the Cash Card tab and follow the process on the screen. Make sure you fill out as much information as accurately and completely as you can.

Go to PayPal

You will need to log into your PayPal account like normal. Scroll down the web page until you see your list of banks and cards on the right side of the screen.

Click on Link a Card or Bank and grab your Cash App card. Enter the card details, such as the number, expiration date, and your name like you would any other debit or credit card.

After that, you can make the Cash Card your main method of payment online and in stores. You can also select it even if you don't change your default payment method.

Why the Cash App Card Might Not Work

If you go with the Cash App card option, you may have trouble adding it to PayPal. This can happen for a few reasons, and you can contact Cash App support for help if necessary.

One reason you may have trouble is if you aren't a verified Cash App user, which may happen right after opening an account. PayPal also needs to trust you as a user.

If you haven't activated your Cash App card, you might also not be able to use it on PayPal. Make sure you update your Cash App on your phone as well.

Will You Move Money From Cash App to PayPal?

Unfortunately, you can't directly move money from Cash App to PayPal, but you do have options. Whether you use your bank account as a middleman or the Cash Card as a PayPal payment method, you can get the money you need.

Then, you can buy things with PayPal like you would using any other debit card or bank account. You may need to wait a few days or pay a fee, but either option is worth it for the transfer.

Fake Cash App Support

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) mobile payment services, such as Venmo, Zelle, and Cash App, have become popular digital solutions for everyday consumers. These apps allow you to transfer and receive money from friends and family, all with the click of a button. You can link your bank accounts, credit or debit cards and instantly send money to someone, making for a quick and easy transfer.

Cash App is a popular choice among consumers, as its interface is easy to use and navigate; it allows users to quickly send someone money, receive money, or invest in stocks. Cash App, though, has recently come under fire as reports of fraudulent behavior are making headlines.

If you are a Cash App user, here are some scams to look out for, along with ways you can protect yourself and your personal information.

One way that scammers are taking advantage of customers is by pretending to be Cash App support. Cash App does not have a direct line to their customer service, so scammers are pretending to be their support line to gain access to mobile devices and steal personal information. Unknowing customers might Google search for a support line phone number and come across a website that appears to be support for Cash App users, but is actually a scam.

Once you call, these scammers will encourage you to download a screen sharing app, so they can have access to your phone, under the guise of “helping you.” In reality, they are trying to steal your personal information. There have also been reports of this fake support line directly asking for the debit/credit card number on your Cash App, your Cash App PIN, or security information. In both circumstances, your bank account information and personal information would be compromised.

The website where these reports originated from has reportedly been taken down, but the Better Business Bureau is encouraging consumers to be keep an eye out for anything suspicious that they may come across.

A popular event on Twitter and Instagram is Super Cash App Friday, where the official Cash App account hosts a sweepstakes to win cash prizes. This sweepstakes encourages users to follow and share a post, and they are entered into a sweepstakes to win money.

However, scammers are preying on those who have entered to win the giveaway. Scammers are creating fake accounts on these social platforms and then private messaging users who have shared Cash Apps giveaway social post. The scammers will tell you that you won a cash prize in a separate giveaway, but there’s one catch: you need to send THEM a small amount of money first to verify your identity so that you can claim the large cash prize. Once you send them money, the account blocks you and you’re cash is gone.

These scammers might also send a fake Cash App link for users to sign into so that they can steal your login credentials. So, not only do they have your hard-earned cash, but they also have your personal information.

These types of scams have been heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many find themselves in need of fast cash. These scammers will often claim to be influencers or say that they want to help other people during a difficult time and give back, only to take advantage of unknowing individuals.

We know how convenient it is to use P2P digital solutions, and we want you to use them safely! Here are some things to remember and keep in mind as you spend.

Know the Rules

Giveaways and sweepstakes are fun, and if you decide to participate in one, make sure you know the rules and verify its legitimacy.  Authentic giveaways and sweepstakes will never request that you send cash to verify identity; report any social media account claiming this, as it is a scam.

Only Send Funds to People you Know

When sending someone cash through Cash App, make sure you only send cash to someone you know and double-check that their username is correct.  It can be easy to use Cash App for payment of services or goods, but it is much safer to transfer money between family and friends. Keep in mind that all transactions with Cash App are instant and cannot be cancelled. So, even if you mistakenly send cash to the wrong person, Cash App often will be unable to cancel the transaction or refund you the money.

Set up Security Features

One of the best ways to protect your personal information is to set up security features. Cash App will allow you to set up a PIN or fingerprint to make transactions, turn on two factor authentication, and utilize email and text notifications so that you will be notified of any suspicious behavior.

Protect Sensitive Information

Remember: never give out your personal information. Cash App will never ask you to disclose personal information, such as a PIN or card number. If anyone who claims to work with Cash App requests this information, it is a red flag.

Cash App Support

There is no direct support line for cash app, so stay away from any website claiming to be Cash App support.  If you need to speak to someone from Cash App, you will need to contact support through the mobile app. When you click on your Cash App profile, there is a tab at the bottom for support where users can find help resolving issues.

Here at Blackhawk Bank, we want to make sure that your information is secure and doesn’t end up in the wrong hands. If you are interested connecting your Cash App to your Blackhawk Bank account we can help you, contact us today!

As a reminder, Blackhawk Bank can't help you with any issues you are currently having with Cash App.

Other features limited to users 18 and up include Borrow, Check Deposit, Paper Money Deposit how to load your cash app card with cash cross-border payments.

How to load your cash app card with cash, by opening up to a new teenage userbase, Cash App could close that gap even further.

Consumer Reports’s study of peer-to-peer payment apps gave it a 64 on a scale of one to 100 (with 100 being a perfect score). It earned good marks for data security, customer support and accessibility (across a range of devices and for those without bank accounts). Cash App is available for iPhone and Android users.

If you receive money, it lands in your Cash App account. Or you can link Cash App to an existing bank account and use that to transfer money to and from the Cash App account.

Once you’ve verified your account by giving information like your name, date cabins for you with indoor pool birth, etc., those limits are lifted, according to a Cash App representative.
