5 reasons you might actually want to buy the new iPod Touch

The newest gadget out of Cupertino may be best described by what it can’t do. It can’t connect to a cell tower and make a regular phone call, it can’t use your face to unlock it, and it can’t take photos in portrait mode with a blurry background. The beefed-up iPod Touch can’t do plenty of things, compared to a smartphone in the $1,000 price range. In fact, it’s the features it doesn’t have, plus the few new ones it does, that makes it a niche product that stubbornly deserves to exist in 2019.

At $199, the iPod is the cheapest new device that Apple sells with a touchscreen. It hadn’t been refreshed since 2015, and the new version now implements the A10 chip. That gives it the same processor that powers the iPhone 7, currently the cheapest phone that Apple makes, at $449. (The chip in the previous-gen model was an A8.) The A10 is two generations behind the most current chip in an Apple smartphone, but remember—a device need not have the latest and speediest silicon in it to work just fine for what it needs to do.

Curious why you might want to spring for one of these 3.1-ounce gadgets? Here’s why.

You want to try augmented reality

Thanks to the new chip, the new iPod supports augmented reality, or AR, which the previous-gen iPod Touch did not. That means that games and other apps that allow you to place digital objects in the real world (when you’re looking at the real work through the screen) now work on it. If you’re wondering if you absolutely need a device that can do that, the answer is no. It can be useful for borderline practical purposes like when you’re furniture shopping and want to virtually place a chair in your living room. More importantly, however, it’s fun for games. And with a device aimed so squarely at kids, that’s important.

The new chip is also faster, not surprisingly, so the device’s performance will be two times as snappy as the previous-gen iPod Touch.

You love FaceTime, and want to try it in groups

While the iPod Touch can’t pick up a cell signal, it will connect to Wi-Fi. In fact, on the back of the device is an oblong-shaped sensor that’s near the camera and flash: that’s the Wi-Fi antenna. Thanks to that connectivity, the iPod works, as before, to connect via iMessage and FaceTime with other gadgets in the Apple ecosystem. If you love FaceTime and everyone in your home has an Apple device, this new iPod Touch can now do group FaceTime calls for a many-people-are-speaking conversation.

Thanks to Wi-Fi, it’ll also, of course, allow for web browsing and downloading apps and games.

You want to use headphones with a 3.5mm connector and no dongle

Apple famously removed the headphone jack from its iPhones in 2016, meaning that you need to connect your headphones to them via a Lightning connector, through an adapter, or Bluetooth. Like the previous iPod Touch, the latest version happily retains its old-school headphone jack, meaning that old pair of Bose headphones you have with a round metal connector at the end will work with this device just fine. It’s the last newly-made pants-pocketable Apple device with a regular headphone connection. It has up to 256GB storage, which is plenty for using as a music-specific device (although that version costs $399.)

You don’t care about—or want—biometric security

Apple’s current iPhones use Face ID to validate who you are, in addition to sometimes requiring your passcode. Older models, like the iPhone 7 and 8, still use Touch ID to sense your fingerprints. Both of these methods are generally fast and convenient ways to unlock a phone. The latest iPod Touch, as before, still lacks either of these, meaning that the only way to lock it and unlock it is with the quaint ol’ passcode. Not incorporating these biometric sensing components likely helps Apple keep the price down.

You want a gadget for your pre-smartphone kids

The most obvious reason to spring for an iPod Touch in 2019—and the umbrella that unifies these features (or lack thereof) — is that it’s a good choice for children, who could use it to communicate with family members when they’re on Wi-Fi, or simply listen to the Baby Shark song until you throw it in the ocean. Without a data connection, it can remain a home device or a gadget for consuming pre-downloaded content on trips.

It’s cheaper than an entry-level iPad Mini, which starts at twice the price of the $199 iPod Touch. That extra $200 for the iPad Mini gets you a bigger screen, a Touch ID sensor, and the option to use an Apple Pencil with it.

But the iPod Touch’s 4-inch screen size, and 2.3-inch width, may be all a kid needs. Oh, and like the original iPod released in 2001, it plays music.

Apple ditches “free” iPod touch for its 2011 Back to School promo

Image via Apple
with 67 posters participating

Apple has announced its back-to-school promotion for summer of 2011, but this year's promo is different than years past. No longer will students be able to score a free iPod touch after buying a new Mac—instead, Apple is offering them a $100 gift card to be used on the Mac App Store, iBookstore, iTunes, or the App Store.

As usual, the promo lasts from now (June 16) through September 20. Students who purchase a "qualifying Mac" (this usually means one that you can get with educational pricing, and no refurbs) can then automatically get the gift card along with it. In the past, students have had to purchase both the Mac and the iPod touch (or an iPod nano, if the touch isn't agreeable), then apply for a rebate for the cost of the iPod.

The rebates for those iPods in years past have been up to $299, so this year's promo is likely to be quite a disappointment by comparison. Not only are students getting something of a lower monetary value than before, it must also be used to buy content and not physical stuff. You mean I have to buy software or e-books with my gift card? Bo-ring!

What to Know Before Changing iTunes and App Store Country

We might live in an interconnected world, but international laws and policies can't always keep up with our jet-setting ways. You'll discover this first-hand if you ever try to change your iTunes or App Store account from one country to another.

Although it is possible to switch your iTunes or App Store country---which we'll show you how to do below---doing so comes with a fair amount of drawbacks, like losing access to all your previous purchases.

Here's everything you need to know about this process.

The Problem With Changing Your iTunes or App Store Country

Each country accesses a different version of iTunes or the App Store. Sometimes these stores have different apps, music, movies, and other media available in them. But even if two stores have exactly the same content, you can only access your purchased media from the store you bought it from.

That means you lose access to all your existing iTunes and App Store purchases when you change your Apple ID to a different country.

Anything already on your device is still available to use and apps you've already downloaded still get the latest updates. But you'll need to change the App Store and iTunes settings back to your original country again if you want to access purchases that you hadn't already downloaded.

The biggest issue with this is that you need a valid payment method for whichever country you want to change iTunes and the App Store to. You can't use an Australian credit card in the US App Store, for example.

So if you moved from Australia to the US, you'd need to get an American credit card to change to the US App Store. Then, if you ever wanted to access your Australian purchases again, you'd need to use your old Australian card to change back. This might be impossible to do if you moved to America permanently and your Australian payment details have expired.

One way to get around this problem is to create a second Apple ID account, rather than changing the settings for your existing one.

The Benefits of Creating a Second Apple ID Account

Instead of changing the country or region for your existing iTunes and App Store account, sometimes it's beneficial to create a second Apple ID to use instead. With two separate accounts---one for Australia and one for the US, for example---you can switch between them at any time without needing to update your payment information.

All you would need to do is sign out of iTunes and the App Store on your device, then sign in again using the second account. After doing so, you get instant access to all the iTunes and App Store content from that country, including your previous purchases.

It's possible to create a new Apple ID account without attaching any payment information to it, allowing you to download free media from iTunes or the App Store in any country. If you want to buy something from another country, you can either add a payment method from that country or purchase a foreign iTunes gift card to use with that account.

The problem with this method is that it splits your purchases across two separate accounts. You need to associate each of them with a separate email address. And if you lose access to one of the accounts, you also lose all the purchases you made using it.

How to Keep iTunes and App Store Purchases From a Different Country

If you've already downloaded them to your device, you can still use any apps, music, movies, TV shows, books, and other iTunes or App Store purchases regardless of which country or account you purchased them from.

That means you should download all the purchases you want to keep using before changing your iTunes and App Store country, or before creating a separate Apple ID account.

If possible, create another copy of these purchases by making an iPhone backup on a computer. When creating the backup, be sure to select the option to Back up all the data from your device to your computer.

If you lose access to your original Apple ID account or if you're unable to change the iTunes and App Store back to your original country, you can restore this backup to retrieve your original purchases.

How to Change the iTunes and App Store Country Settings

If you are moving to a different country permanently---meaning you only expect to change the country for iTunes and the App Store once---then you should change the settings for your account.

Otherwise, you should create a second account to make it easier to switch between iTunes and App Store countries multiple times. This second method is particularly useful if you don't have a payment method for the new country you want to use.

We explain each option below.

Method 1: Change the Country Settings for iTunes and the App Store

There are a few steps you need to take before you can change your iTunes and App Store settings to a different country:

  • Cancel any existing subscriptions on your account, such as Apple Music or Apple TV+.
  • Leave your Family Sharing group, unless you're the Family Organizer.
  • Spend any remaining credit in your Apple ID account.
  • Download any apps, music, movies, TV shows, books, or other media you might want to access in the future.

You also need to make sure you have a valid payment method and billing address for your new country. You'll need to add this payment method to your Apple ID account when you change countries.

While you can change the iTunes or App Store country from any device, you only need to do it once. After you change the settings on one device, it affects the same account across all your other Apple devices as well.

On an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  1. Open the Settings app and go to [Your Name] > iTunes & App Store.
  2. Tap your Apple ID username and choose to View Apple ID from the popup.
  3. Tap Country/Region and choose to Change Country or Region, then select the new country you want to change to.
  4. After agreeing to the Terms and Conditions, enter the payment information and billing address for your new country and tap Done.

On a Mac:

  1. Open Apple Music and go to Account > View My Account from the menu bar.
  2. Under the Apple ID Summary section, click the option to Change Country or Region.
  3. Select the new country you want to change to.
  4. After agreeing to the Terms and Conditions, enter the payment information and billing address for your new country and tap Done.

Method 2: Create a Second Apple ID Account for Another Country

Creating a second Apple ID account is the best way to switch iTunes and the App Store to a different country temporarily. You don't need a foreign payment method and it's easy to switch back and forth between your old account and the new one within the App Store itself.

The easiest way to create a new Apple ID account is directly on your device. When you do so, make sure you select the right country for your new account. You'll need to confirm this by adding a billing address in that country and verifying your account with an email address (and possibly a phone number as well).

You can use any phone number, even if it's from a different country. But you need to use a new email address that isn't linked to an existing Apple ID account.

On an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  1. Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Sign Out.
  2. Choose which iCloud data to save to your device and tap Sign Out.
  3. Open the App Store and tap the Account icon in the top-right corner, then choose to Create New Apple ID.
  4. Select your new country beneath the email address and password fields.
  5. Enter an email address and password to use with your new account. You can't use an email address associated with another Apple ID account.
  6. Tap Next and fill in every requested Apple ID field. If you don't have a payment method for this country, choose None. Even without a payment method, you need to find a billing address you can use in this country.
  7. Tap Done when you're finished to create your new account.

Top Up Your Account With an iTunes Gift Card

After you create a new Apple ID account or change the settings on your existing account, you should be able to access content from iTunes or the App Store in the new country of your choice.

To make purchases, you need to ensure your payment information and billing address matches your new country. Alternatively, buy an international gift card and use it to add credit to your account. The iPod Touch (stylized and marketed as iPod touch) is a line of iOS-based mobile devices designed and marketed by Apple Inc. with a touchscreen-controlleduser interface. As with other iPod models, it can be used as a music player and a handheld gaming device, but it can also be used as a digital camera, a web browser and for messaging.[7] It is similar in design to the iPhone, but it connects to the Internet only through Wi-Fi and does not use cellular network data, and so is not a smartphone.

The iPod Touch was introduced in 2007; some 100 million iPod Touch units were sold by May 2013.[2] The current iPod Touch, released on May 28, 2019, is the seventh-generation model.

iPod Touch models are sold by storage space and color; all models of the same generation typically offer identical features, performance, and operating system upgrades. An exception was the fifth generation, in which the low-end (16 GB)[a] model was initially sold without a rear-facing camera and in a single color.[8]

The iPod Touch has been the only product in Apple's iPod product line since the discontinuation of the iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle on July 27, 2017, after which Apple revised the storage and pricing for the iPod Touch with 32 and 128 GB of storage.[9]

Features[edit]

Software[edit]

Main article: iOS

See also: iOS version history

The iPod Touch runs Apple's Unix-based iOS operating system used on the iPhone, and includes bundled software to browse the Internet, view maps, send and receive email, view media. Users type on a virtual keyboard displayed on the screen. Apple operates online stores, allowing users to buy and directly download music, videos and third-party software. From launch, the iPod Touch was described by journalists as an "iPhone without the phone",[10] and each iPod Touch model to date has been introduced with the same release of iOS as the contemporary iPhone model.

In June 2011, iOS 5, the fifth major release of iOS software, was announced at Apple's WWDC 2011, which added notification, messaging and reminder features.[11] Apple limited some features, most notably the voice control system Siri, to the iPhone.[12]iOS 6, which was released on September 19, 2012 for the fourth and fifth generation iPod Touch models, contains 200 new features including Passbook, Facebook integration and Apple Maps. The fifth generation iPod Touch gained the ability to take panoramic photos, a feature shared with the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.[13]

On June 8, 2015, it was announced at the WWDC that the iPod Touch fifth generation would support iOS 9, along with other A5 Chip devices. This makes the iPod Touch fifth generation the first iPod Touch to support four major versions of iOS.

Early iOS updates prior to iOS 4 have been paid for owners of supported iPod Touch models. Apple received criticism for this decision and for excluding certain features from the iPod Touch software that the iPhone included.[14][15] Apple's position was that they could add features for free to the iPhone because the revenue from it is accounted for on a subscription basis under accounting rules, rather than as a one time payment (as iPhones were often sold with a carrier contract).[16] At WWDC in June 2010, as of iOS 4, Steve Jobs announced that Apple had "found a way" to make subsequent OS upgrades available free to iPod Touch owners.

Setup and synchronization[edit]

iPod Touch units running iOS 4 or earlier require a Mac or PC to be set up for the first time. Downloading apps or media from the iTunes Store and App Store does not require a computer, though media not purchased through the iTunes Store still has to be added through a computer.

New iPods bought after October 12, 2011 have iOS 5.0 or later preloaded, and can be set up wirelessly,[17] without the need of a PC or Mac.

Purchasing content[edit]

To purchase content on the iPod Touch, the user must create an Apple ID or have an existing account. With this account one may download music and videos from the iTunes Store, apps from the App Store, or books from the Apple Books Store. An Apple ID account created without a credit card can be used to get free content, and gift cards can be used to pay for apps instead of using a credit card.

Third-party applications[edit]

The only official way to obtain third-party applications for the iPod Touch is through Apple's App Store, which is a branch of iTunes Store. The App Store application, available in all versions of iOS from 2.0 onwards, allows users to browse and download applications from a single online repository (hosted by Apple) with the iTunes Store.

Sideloading apps outside the App Store is done through the Xcode application, and is intended for developers and enterprises, though tools for sideloading outside of Xcode exist, and are mainly used for applications not allowed in the App Store.

Design and hardware[edit]

The iPod Touch is generally similar to the iPhone models prior to the iPhone X (excluding the second generation iPhone SE). Compared to a same-generation iPhone, an iPod Touch is thinner, lighter and less expensive, while lacking some hardware and software features. Steve Jobs once referred to the iPod Touch as "training wheels for the iPhone".[18]

All iPod Touch models lack biometric authentication, 3D Touch, NFC, GPS, an earpiece speaker and a noise-cancelling microphone. Depending on the generation, the iPod Touch may have a smaller or otherwise inferior display and camera(s). Newer models (5th, 6th, and 7th generation) lack the ambient light sensor that makes automatic brightness available. The first generation iPod Touch lacks a built-in speaker, and the first, second, and third generation iPod Touch lack a microphone, a camera, and a flash. Starting with the 4th generation iPod Touch, a camera and microphone were added, and starting with the 5th generation iPod Touch, an LED flash was added.

The iPod Touch has no cellular modem, and therefore cannot directly make phone calls on the public switched telephone network. However, it can make VoIP calls such as FaceTime, and send iMessages to other iPhones, Macs, iPads, and iPod Touch models with an Apple ID. The 5th generation iPod Touch and later can forward and receive standard phone calls through a separate iPhone (a feature introduced in iOS 8), with the Wi-Fi Calling feature. The two devices must be linked to the same Apple ID, and the iPhone's carrier must support this feature.[19]

Connectivity[edit]

Main articles: Dock connector § Apple 30-pin dock connector, and Lightning (connector)

Apple Lightning connector

The iPod Touch can communicate with a computer through Wi-Fi or USB using a cable and a dock connector.

iPod models released before 2012 feature a 30-pin dock connector (known colloquially as the iPod dock connector), which carried analog signals.

The fifth, sixth, and seventh generations of the iPod Touch feature a new digital dock connector, called Lightning, which was introduced alongside the iPhone 5, fourth generation iPad and first generation iPad Mini, and the seventh generation iPod Nano models. This new connector is smaller than the previous one allowing for a slimmer form factor, and is reversible. Various accessories are available to connect the Apple Lightning connector to the older 30-pin dock connector or USB,[20] although not all old accessories will work, because the Lightning connector cannot handle analog signals.[21]

User-made modifications[edit]

See also: iOS jailbreaking

Like all of Apple's iOS devices, the iPod Touch is a tightly controlled or closed platform. Communication between apps is limited and controlled, and Apple is the only authorized software vendor for firmware and applications. Hackers have attempted to "jailbreak" all iOS devices to enable forbidden or unsupported features, such as multitasking in iOS versions before 4.0, themes for the home screen, and enabling the battery-percentage indicator (limited to the iPhone prior to the seventh generation iPod Touch). Jailbreaks for the iPod Touch first surfaced a month after the original model was released in September 2007, when hackers released JailbreakMe 1.0 (also called "AppSnapp") to jailbreak iPhone OS 1.1.1.[22][23] This allowed users to install third-party programs on their devices before Apple permitted this with iPhone OS 2.

Apple's warranty statement implies that an iPod Touch after jailbreaking or other modification made by unofficial means is not covered by Apple's warranty. Jailbreaking is a violation of the terms and conditions for using iOS. While the jailbreaking process can normally be undone by performing a restore through iTunes,[24] there is a risk of rendering the device unusable.

Upon launch in 2007 the first generation iPod Touch received mostly good reviews for its display, its full Web browser, and YouTube support. However it was also criticized for being a "stripped down" iPhone, for lacking external volume buttons, and for having a lower-quality display.[25][26][27]

Notable competing products as of 2009 included Creative's ZEN X-Fi2, Sony's Walkman X Series, and Microsoft's Zune HD;[28][29] and as of 2011, the Samsung Galaxy Player[30] and Sony Walkman Z Series.

Later models received a more lukewarm reception, with reviewers questioning whether an iPod Touch made sense as a product in a time where smartphones had become more affordable.[31]

5 ipod touch app store gift card you might actually want to buy the new iPod Touch

In fact, it’s the features it doesn’t have, plus the few new ones it does, that makes it a niche product that stubbornly deserves to exist in amazon fire stick remote pairing $199, the iPod is the cheapest new device that Apple sells with a touchscreen.

The new chip is also faster, not surprisingly, so the device’s performance will be bremen high school bremen ga times as snappy as the previous-gen iPod Touch.

But the iPod Touch’s 4-inch screen size, and 2.3-inch width, pnc fraud number be all a kid needs. Oh, and like the original iPod released in 2001, it plays music.

And if you lose access to one of the accounts, you also lose all the purchases you made using it.

ipod touch app store gift card How to Keep iTunes and App Store Purchases From a Different Country

  2. ipod touch app store gift card Choose which iCloud data to save to your device and tap Sign Out.

Square has just announced the launch of the Square Photo Studio app in Canada, which makes it easy for businesses to take high-quality product photos from a mobile device and directly sync them to a Square item catalog or online store.

Square

With the Square Photo Studio app, a seller can add beautiful, stylized images to their product pages on the go and through their phone, without the cost of a professional photo studio.

The Square Photo Studio app provides easy-to-follow prompts to take the best photo, automatically isolates the product from the background, and allows users to choose custom scenes that include new backgrounds, shadows, and colours.

From there, a seller can quickly and easily connect those images to items in their Square catalog, or create a new item entirely and immediately start selling.

“The Square Photo Studio app simplifies this process by allowing us to take professional-looking photos on our phone that can be uploaded in minutes. Running our online store on our phone has been streamlined with the tools Square offers to us,” said Square user Kate Waugh.

“It’s no secret that products with professional-looking photos perform better than those without,” said David Rusenko, head of eCommerce at Square.”

The Square Photo Studio app for iOS is now available as a free download via the following App Store link.

Learn all there is to know about iTunes Gift Cards before buying one to make sure you get what you need.
