How To Set Up T-Mobile Parental Controls

If you’re a T-Mobile customer and want to set up parental controls, it’s important to note that you must be the Primary Account Holder to add Family Allowances to your account. For T-Mobile One customers with two or more lines, this service is included free. If not, you may be required to pay a monthly fee for the service.

By default, the Parent Line is the Primary Account Holder, but after you add Family Allowances, you can designate a Parent Line. Both the Parent Line and Primary Account Holder can manage allowances for all lines on the account. Your children’s lines (“managed lines”) can view their individual allowances, but they cannot make changes to the settings.

A note for families looking to use T-Mobile FamilyMode with Bark: If you want to use Bark’s Parental Controls, you may not be able to use some of T-Mobile’s parental controls at the same time. Both parental controls use a VPN to protect your child’s device, and mobile devices only allow one VPN at a time. In addition, if you are looking to monitor the texts, photos, web browsing, etc. of your child’s iOS device, you may run into issues with content monitoring when using T-Mobile FamilyMode. Please reach out to us if you believe that to be the case so we can help you decide what will work best for you and your family.

Parental Control Settings With T-Mobile

  • Set the number of allowed “Whenever Minutes.”
  • Set the number of text messages the line can send and receive during a billing cycle.
  • Set a current allowance if you want to specify an amount of money your child is allowed to spend on any downloads.
    • Note: Billing purchases to your T-Mobile account are blocked while Family Allowances is active, though you can still use a credit card or prepaid card for purchases from the Google Play Store or the iPhone App Store
  • Schedule the allowed or blocked time when your children are allowed to use their devices during the pre-defined time periods.
    • Set time limits.
    • Set BedTime.
  • Set the Allowed and Not Allowed Numbers. Each line can have a maximum of 10 numbers for each list. 411, 611, and 911 do not count toward that maximum.
  •  The child’s line can always send and receive calls and messages to and from any Always Allowed numbers, even after allowances are reached, or during blocked times.
  • Always Allowed numbers will always allow calls and messages from these specific numbers, regardless of restrictions or allowance limitations. Remember to add the voicemail retrieval number to this list so your child can always check their voicemail.
  • Never Allowed numbers will always block calls and messages from any number on that list.

You can manage these settings for all the lines on the account.

Parental Controls With Family Allowances

You can also manage Family Allowances from within the T-Mobile app on your device with these instructions:

  1. Open your T-Mobile App and log in as either the parent or Primary Account Holder.
  2. Select Profile.
  3. Click Family Controls on the left.
  4. In Family Allowances, which is only an option if you’re subscribed to the service, tap Manage.
  5. Select the name or the line to view current settings.
  6. Set or change allowances for the selected line.
  7. Tap Save on the top right of the page.

Remember, Family Allowance settings don’t work on Wi-Fi or with Wi-Fi calling.

Control Screen Time With FamilyMode

FamilyMode is an optional T-Mobile service, available for $10/month. The system allows parents to control children’s internet access on smartphones and tablets wherever they are. The Home Base device also allows parents more control over the range of devices in their home.

Once you’ve added the FamilyMode service to your account, you’ll need the FamilyMode app installed on your phone. You might also consider getting the Home Base device, which offers additional control over other devices in your home.. After installing the app on your phone, connect to the Home Base using either an ethernet cable or by pairing it over your home Wi-Fi network.

To set up FamilyMode

  1. Open the FamilyMode app. Press Get Started.
  2. Agree to the User Agreement.
  3. Choose Set up parent app. Log in with your T-Mobile ID.
  4. Create profiles for each family member.

Add a new family member

  1. Tapping the Menu icon in the top left of the home screen in the FamilyMode app.
  2. Tap Add Profile.
  3. Enter the family member’s name and add an optional photo.
  4. Set filter levels.
    1. High: Works for children between the ages of 6 and 12. Educational and kid-safe experiences are available by default.
    2. Medium: Designed for teens 13-17. Most options are available. Any platforms, sites, or apps that are 18+ are blocked, and inappropriate categories are filtered and invisible.
    3. Low: Appropriate for 18+. This provides access to most all platforms, categories, and apps, but explicit and mature content is filtered by default.
    4. None: This is for profiles you want FamilyMode to ignore. This is also the option to choose if you just want to be able to set BedTimes for the profile. Time limits, filtering, and usage are not available for platforms with this filter level.

To add another parent

  1. Download the FamilyMode app to the parent’s device.
  2. Open the app.
  3. Tap Get Started on the welcome screen.
  4. Agree to the user agreement.
  5. Tap Set up Parent app.
  6. Tap Continue at the T-Mobile Primary Account Holder screen.
  7. Log in with the T-Mobile Primary Account Holder’s information.
  8. Tap Menu.
  9. Tap Add Profile.
  10. Enter Parent’s name and photo.
  11. Set the filter settings on the device. Tap Save.
  12. Enable or disable BedTime. Tap Save.
  13. Select the other parent’s device to add it to their profile. Tap Done.

How To: Delete the T-Mobile App from Any Android Phone — No Computer Needed

If you buy an Android phone from any of the big US carriers, it will come with several extra apps in addition to any apps the manufacturer preinstalled. It's all in the name of profit, of course. Some of these apps are from companies that paid the carriers to distribute their software, and some are from the carriers themselves, usually aimed at upselling you or perhaps collecting a little data.

The whole thing is pretty disgusting, honestly. Take the T-Mobile app as an example. On most phones that come with it preinstalled, you can't even delete the app using conventional methods. The "Disable" button is grayed out in your system settings and there's no option to uninstall the app. You have to use ADB, which typically involves your computer and a command prompt, to remove it.

But a new feature added in Android 9 and finalized in Android 11 now allows you to use ADB without a PC. That means you can just tap a few buttons, copy and paste some text from this article, and the T-Mobile app will be gone for good!

What You'll Need

  • Android 9/One UI 1.0 or higher (some models may need Android 11)
  • Access to any Wi-Fi network
  • $3 to buy an awesome app from an independent developer

Step 1: Enable Developer Options

First, open the Settings app from your app drawer (the "All Apps" list) and scroll down towards the bottom. Here, select "About Phone," and if you're on a Samsung, tap "Software Information" after that. Next, tap the "Build Number" entry seven times in quick succession to unlock Android's hidden Developer Options menu. If you'd like more help, we have a full guide dedicated to this part:

Step 2: Enable Wireless Debugging

Next, back out to the main Settings menu and scroll down to the bottom to select the newly-unlocked "Developer Options." If you don't see it on the main menu, select "System," then "Advanced" to find the Dev Options menu.

Once inside, scroll down just a little bit (maybe one page length) and enable the toggle switch next to "Wireless Debugging." If you don't see this option, it's because some phone manufacturers hid it away on their builds of Android 9 and 10. It's not hidden anymore on any devices with Android 11. But your only option if it's not there is to set up a traditional ADB connection, then skip ahead to Step 5.

Also of note, this is the part where you'll need access to any Wi-Fi network. The Wireless Debugging setting won't allow you to turn it on unless you're connected to Wi-Fi. The network won't be used (instead you'll create a virtual network shell on your phone), so it can be literally any Wi-Fi access point, even one without internet.

Step 3: Install LADB

Here's the part that actually costs a little money. Instead of using the Wireless Debugging feature through a computer over Wi-Fi, you can use an app called LADB, or Local ADB, to create an ADB server on your phone and connect directly to it without a PC.

If you're unable to use the Play Store's billing system or you can't spare the money, you can visit the project's GitHub page and compile the app from source, but be warned that's a complicated process. For everyone else, just grab the app from the Play Store at the link below!

Step 4: Connect to the Virtual Shell

Next, you'll just have to connect LADB's local host to your phone's wireless ADB function. But depending on what Android version you're running, that can be either incredibly easy or a little clunky. We'll start with the clunky one (newer Android versions), so if you're running Android 10 or lower, you can skip ahead.

Android 11 & Higher

Starting with Android 11, the new Wireless Debugging feature is complete. That means it even has a proper security system where you have to enter credentials to send commands, which complicates things in this instance.

So when you first launch LADB on Android 11, you'll see a popup asking you to input the port number and pairing code. Since the popup in Settings that shows the pairing code was meant to be read on your phone while you're typing it into a computer, the system automatically changes the pairing code as soon as it closes.

So you'll need to open your Settings app in split-screen view to keep the popup from closing. While LADB is prompting you for the numbers, enter multitasking view and tap the app's icon at the top of its card, then select "Split Screen." Next, select the Settings card from the mini multitasking view that appears to make it the second screen. Or if you're on Samsung, select "Settings" from the list.

From there, head back to Settings –> System –> Advanced –> Developer Options or Settings –> Developer Options, then tap the "Wireless Debugging" text (rather than the toggle) to open the feature's submenu. From there, scroll down and tap "Pair device with pairing code."

Now it's just a matter of copying the numbers over. Under IP address & Port in the Settings popup, you'll see a series of numbers, then a colon, then another number. The number after the colon is what you should enter into the Port field in LADB. Then the pairing code goes in the Pairing Code box and you can tap "Okay" in LADB.

You'll see a message in the LADB terminal saying "Waiting for device to accept connection." This could take up to two minutes, so be patient. When the connection is complete, you should get a notification from Android System telling you "Wireless debugging connected."

Android 9 & 10

If you're on Android 9 or 10, this part is so much easier. Just open the app, then tick the box next to "Always allow" and select "Allow" when prompted to "Allow USB Debugging." You'll then be shown the command line, ready to accept a command!

Step 5: Delete the T-Mobile App

Now you're ready to do some deleting. Long-press the text in the code box below, choose "Select All" from the context menu, then hit "Copy."

Head back to LADB and paste the above command into the input field at the bottom of the screen, then hit enter on your keyboard. You'll see a "Success!" message and you'll instantly find that the T-Mobile app is gone from your system.

This method is permanent with two exceptions. One, you can reinstall the app by sending the command in the code box below. Two, if you ever factory reset your phone, it will be restored. Other than that, have fun with your less-bloated phone!

Just when you think the massive T-Mobile hack can't get any worse, on Friday the carrier announced that over 50 million people, including current and former customers as well as prepaid customers, were affected by the breach. Information like Social Security numbers, driver's licenses and account PINs were exposed. Here are some steps you can take right now to protect your financial information.

Regardless whether you're a T-Mobile user, the exposure of account PINs is a major danger. That's the password that you're asked to give to a T-Mobile employee before any changes can be made to your account. A scammer who knows your account password can call customer care and ask to have the SIM card linked to your phone number changed to a new SIM card and device, effectively taking over your phone number. If you've moved on from T-Mobile to another carrier and used the same passcode, you should change it immediately. 

Sim swapping is not just an inconvenience. Once someone has taken over your phone number, they can use it to impersonate you or log into your online accounts. They can get instant access to any two-factor authentication codes you receive through text messages, the PIN that an institution texts you to verify your identity. 

So if they also have your password or other personal information, they're just a few clicks away from logging into your email, bank or social media accounts. And if someone gains access to your email account, they can change other passwords and search through your email archive to build a list of your entire online presence. Take the time to move away from SMS 2FA codes and use app-based codes instead. Seriously.

For example, Matthew Miller, a contributor to CNET sister site ZDNet, fell victim to a SIM-swap scam and he experienced the fallout for months afterward. Whoever took over Miller's phone number gained access to his Gmail account, and promptly changed his password, then erased every email, deleted every file in his Google Drive account, and eventually deleted his Gmail account altogether. 

Miller later discovered he was targeted because he had a Coinbase account and his bank account was linked to it. Miller's phone received his Coinbase account's two-factor authentication code, so the hackers were able to log into his cryptocurrency trading account and buy $25,000 worth of Bitcoin. Miller had to call his bank and report the transaction as fraud. That's on top of the immense vulnerability he felt.

To be clear, this isn't an issue that's specific to T-Mobile. All wireless carriers and customers can fall victim to SIM-swap fraud. Below are some tips to secure your wireless account.

How to prevent SIM swapping on your account

You can decrease your chances of someone gaining access to and taking over your phone number by adding a PIN code or password to your wireless account. T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T all offer the ability to add a PIN code. 

If you're unsure if you have a PIN code or need to set one up, here's what you need to do for each of the major US carriers. 

  • T-Mobile: Set up T-Mobile's Account Takeover Protection service. You need to add the feature to each individual line on your account. I also suggest changing your account PIN (if you're not asked to while setting up Account Takeover Protection). 
  • AT&T: Go to your account profile, sign in, then click Sign-in info. Select your wireless account if you have multiple AT&T accounts, then go to Manage extra security under the Wireless passcode section. Make your changes, then enter your password when prompted to save.
  • Verizon Wireless: Call *611 and ask for a Port Freeze on your account, and visit this webpage to learn more about enabling Enhanced Authentication on your account.

If you have service through a different carrier, call their customer service number to ask how you can protect your account. Most likely, you'll be asked to create a PIN or passcode.

When creating a PIN or passcode, keep in mind that if someone has enough information to fake that they're actually you, using a birthday, anniversary or address as the PIN code isn't going to cut it. Instead, create a unique passcode for your carrier and then store it in your password manager. You are using a password manager, right? 

How to know if your SIM has been swapped

The easiest way to tell if your SIM card is no longer active is if you completely lose service on your phone. You may receive a text message stating the SIM card for your number has been changed, and to call customer service if you didn't make the change. But with your SIM card no longer active, you won't be able to place a call from your phone -- not even to customer service (more on this below). 

In short, the quickest way to tell if you've been affected is if your phone completely loses service and you can't send or receive text messages or phone calls.

What to do if you're a victim of SIM-swap fraud

The truth is, if someone wants access to your phone number badly enough, they will do all they can to trick your carrier's support representative. What we've outlined above are best practices, but they're not foolproof. 

Researchers were able to pose as account holders who had forgotten their PIN or passcodes, oftentimes providing recent outgoing calls from the target phone number, called by the actual account holder. How do they know those numbers? They tricked the account holder into calling. Even scarier, sometimes the researchers were able to provide phone numbers for incoming calls to the account they want to take over. Meaning the bad guy simply needed to call the target's phone number themselves. 

Once you realize you've lost service on your mobile device, call your carrier immediately and let them know you didn't make the changes. The carrier will help you recover access to your phone number. I can't emphasize this enough -- do not wait to call. The longer someone has access to your phone number, the more damage they can do. 

Here are the customer service numbers for each major carrier. Put your carrier's number in your phone as a contact:

  • AT&T: 1-800-331-0500
  • T-Mobile: 1-800-937-8997
  • Verizon: 1-800-922-0204

With your SIM card deactivated, you won't be able to call from your phone, but at least you'll have the number handy to use on someone else's device. 

You'll also want to reach out to your banks and credit card companies, and double-check all of your online accounts to make sure that the perpetrator hasn't changed your passwords or made any fraudulent transactions. If you find transactions that aren't yours, call your bank or visit a branch right away and explain the situation. 

Remember, no matter how many PIN codes or passwords we add to our online accounts, there's still a chance that someone will find a way to break in. But at least by setting a passcode for your account, and knowing what to do if you find yourself a victim of SIM swapping, you're prepared. 

Another critical aspect of strong online security is to use a password manager to create and store unique passwords on your behalf. Additionally, enable two-factor authentication on every account that offers it. And make sure you're not falling for robocalls or scammy text messages.

How to protect your T-Mobile account in light of the latest data breach

A cyberattack against T-Mobile has resulted in the theft and compromise of certain personal data of almost 50 million people. This week, the carrier acknowledged a major data breach in which cybercriminals obtained the first and last names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers (SSNs) and driver's license/ID numbers of 7.8 million current T-Mobile postpaid customers and more than 40 million former or potential customers who applied for credit with the company. Also compromised were the names, phone numbers and account PINs of around 850,000 active T-Mobile prepaid customers.

Responding to the breach, T-Mobile implemented a few measures, such as two years of free identity protection services with McAfee's ID Theft Protection Service and Account Takeover Protection for postpaid customers. Further, the company has advised all postpaid subscribers to change their PIN, even though it said it wasn't aware of any postpaid account PINs being compromised.

Much of data stolen by the attacker is reportedly already up for sale on the Dark Web. The breach came to light earlier this week upon news that T-Mobile was investigating an underground forum post from someone claiming to be selling customer data obtained from T-Mobile servers, according to tech news site Motherboard.

The data up for grabs included Social Security numbers, phone numbers, names, physical addresses, unique IMEI numbers and driver's license numbers. Motherboard said it looked at samples of the data and confirmed that it contained details on T-Mobile customers.

Much of this data seems destined to end up in the hands of cybercriminals, who will use it for account compromises, identity theft and other illegal activities. That means now would be a good time for all T-Mobile users to take steps to protect and secure their account, including changing the password and PIN and setting up two-step verification. Here's how to do just that.

Sign into the My T-Mobile website to access your account. At the account page, click on the My T-Mobile menu in the upper right and select My Profile. At the Manage profile page, click the first option for Profile information. Scroll down the Profile information page and click the Edit link in the Password section. Type your current password and then create, type and re-type a new password, trying to follow the usual guidelines for devising a strong and secure password. Click Save.

Next, click the Edit link in the PIN section. Type and then re-type a new numerical PIN, creating one with at least six digits. Click Save.

At this screen, you can also set up your security questions if you haven't already done so or you wish to change them. Click the Edit link in the Security Questions section. Choose or change the first, second and third questions, providing an answer for each one. When done, click Save.

To set up two-step verification for your account, look for a section for Two-Step Verification Options. Your best bet here is to use an authentication app, and T-Mobile steers you to Google Authenticator. If you don't already have this app, download it for your iPhone or Android phone. Back at the website, click the Set up link for Google Authenticator. At the next screen, click Get Started. The page should display a QR code.

Open the app on your phone. Tap the plus icon at the bottom of the screen and select the option for Scan a QR code. Scan the code on the webpage with your phone. Click the button to Continue setup. Enter the current six-digit code for your T-Mobile account as displayed in the app on your phone. Click the button to Confirm Code. Each time you sign into your account, T-Mobile will ask you to enter the current code from Google Authenticator.

Finally, you can further protect your account by requiring a password and additional verification method each time you sign in. To do this, turn on the switch for the option that says: "When this option is on, we'll ask you to provide your password and a second verification method every time you log in."

How to protect your T-Mobile account in light of the latest data breach

A cyberattack against T-Mobile has resulted in the theft and compromise of certain personal data of almost 50 million people. This week, the carrier acknowledged a major data breach in which cybercriminals obtained the first and last names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers (SSNs) and driver's license/ID numbers of 7.8 million current T-Mobile postpaid customers and more than 40 million former or potential customers who applied for credit with the company. Also compromised were the names, phone numbers and account PINs of around 850,000 active T-Mobile prepaid customers.

Responding to the breach, T-Mobile implemented a few measures, such as two years of free identity protection services with McAfee's ID Theft Protection Service and Account Takeover Protection for postpaid customers. Further, the company has advised all postpaid subscribers to change their PIN, even though it said it wasn't aware of any postpaid account PINs being compromised.

Much of data stolen by the attacker is reportedly already up for sale on the Dark Web. The breach came to light earlier this week upon news that T-Mobile was investigating an underground forum post from someone claiming to be selling customer data obtained from T-Mobile servers, according to tech news site Motherboard.

The data up for grabs included Social Security numbers, phone numbers, names, physical addresses, unique IMEI numbers and driver's license numbers. Motherboard said it looked at samples of the data and confirmed that it contained details on T-Mobile customers.

Much of this data seems destined to end up in the hands of cybercriminals, who will use it for account compromises, identity theft and other illegal activities. That means now would be a good time for all T-Mobile users to take steps to protect and secure their account, including changing the password and PIN and setting up two-step verification. Here's how to do just that.

Sign into the My T-Mobile website to access your account. At the account page, click on the My T-Mobile menu in the upper right and select My Profile. At the Manage profile page, click the first option for Profile information. Scroll down the Profile information page and click the Edit link in the Password section. Type your current password and then create, type and re-type a new password, trying to follow the usual guidelines for devising a strong and secure password. Click Save.

Next, click the Edit link in the PIN section. Type and then re-type a new numerical PIN, creating one with at least six digits. Click Save.

At this screen, you can also set up your security questions if you haven't already done so or you wish to change them. Click the Edit link in the Security Questions section. Choose or change the first, second and third questions, providing an answer for each one. When done, click Save.

To set up two-step verification for your account, look for a section for Two-Step Verification Options. Your best bet here is to use an authentication app, and T-Mobile steers you to Google Authenticator. If you don't already have this app, download it for your iPhone or Android phone. Back at the website, click the Set up link for Google Authenticator. At the next screen, click Get Started. The page should display a QR code.

Open the app on your phone. Tap the plus icon at the bottom of the screen and select the option for Scan a QR code. Scan the code on the webpage with your phone. Click the button to Continue setup. Enter the current six-digit code for your T-Mobile account as displayed in the app on your phone. Click the button to Confirm Code. Each time you sign into your account, T-Mobile will ask you to enter the current code from Google Authenticator.

Finally, you can further protect your account by requiring a password and additional verification method each time you sign in.
