Golf Travel: North Carolina boasts a lifetime’s worth of courses

KITTY HAWK, N.C.—The bank manager gave me an unsettling look. It was half scowl, half giggle.

I’d made the mistake of telling him about my bucket list, more specifically my hope to one day own a second home in U.S. golf country — a modest place where I could tee it up all year round, I explained.

“You can’t even afford the home you’ve got,” he growled like old man Potter in It’s a Wonderful Life.

Just for fun, though, he did ask me where this mythical holiday home would be. Oh, North Carolina, I said in the kind of syrupy accent that Andy, Barney and the rest of the gang in Mayberry would appreciate.

He couldn’t disagree. After all, the Tar Heel State is home to more than 550 courses — from the classic No. 2 at the Pinehurst Resort (the Donald Ross creation that will host the 2014 U.S. Open) to the www.farmsteadgolflinks.com/+Farmstead+Golf+Links&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ca" target="_blank">Farmstead Golf Links, which straddles two states.

The 18th hole at Farmstead is a staggering 767 yards, par 6. In fact, it stretches so far you actually tee off in South Carolina and sink your putt in North Carolina.

But back to this second home. The problem would be narrowing down where in the state I would want to buy.

The seaside has always pulled me, especially North Carolina’s Outer Banks. This is where, on Dec. 17, 1903, Orville Wright spent 12 seconds in the air to launch himself into the history books. (He won the coin toss over brother Wilbur.) Between rounds of golf, check out the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kill Devil Hills and the troop of wild horses around Currituck Beach Lighthouse.

The Outer Banks is home to a handful of really good golf courses tucked in and around the barrier islands that divide the Atlantic Ocean from the local sounds. Among the best are The Pointe Golf Club, the Carolina Club, Nags Head Golf Links, the Kilmarlic Golf Club and the Currituck Club (a Rees Jones design that hopscotches along the coast).

I’m also a big admirer of North Carolina’s mountain country, especially the city of Asheville on the west side of the state, which is wrapped by the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Asheville has strong literary connections. Tom Wolfe, author of Look Homeward Angel and You Can’t Go Home Again was an Asheville boy, and O. Henry, the master of the short story, is buried here. F. Scott Fitzgerald carolina club golf course outer banks much time in Asheville. His wife Zelda spent the last years of her life in an Asheville sanitarium, where she died in a fire.

The city is also the site of the Biltmore Estate, the largest privately owned home in the U.S. Now open to the public, the 250-room extravaganza was built by the Vanderbilts.

For the golf, check out the course at the Grove Park Inn, a pretty layout that zigzags over the hills and has tested legends from Bobby Jones to Ben Hogan.

Asheville is also home to a great golfing bargain: its municipal course, which was laid out by Donald Ross in the 1920s, sports a green fee of just $18. Nearby mountain courses worth playing are Mount Mitchell and the Rumbling Bald Carolina club golf course outer banks on Lake Lurie.

The other spot in North Carolina where I would be happy to settle down is around the pine barrens, the soft sandy carolina club golf course outer banks around Pinehurst. The resort and village date to 1895, founded by the Tufts family, who made their fortune selling soda fountains. The celebrities soon arrived, everyone from legendary sharpshooter Annie Oakley, who gave lessons at the resort to Bing Crosby.

The resort now boasts eight golf courses. There is another cluster of terrific layouts just around the corner at Southern Pines, including Mid Pines and Pine Needles, which has hosted the U.S. Women’s Open on three occasions.

There are lots of holiday homes around Pinehurst. But, according to my banker, it will be quite a few winters before I can even think about a southern golf getaway.

So for now, like singer/songwriter James Taylor, I’ll be going to Carolina in my mind.

Ian Cruickshank is a Toronto-based writer. His column usually appears on the fourth Saturday of each month.
