Marcus, Ally cut yields on savings accounts. Is the high-yield savings rate war over?

Marcus – the retail bank arm of Goldman Sachs – and Ally Bank both lowered the yield on their savings accounts ahead of an expected rate cut from the Federal Reserve next month.

Marcus lowered its rate to 2.15% from 2.25%, while Ally reduced its yield to 2.1% from 2.2%. Both banks informed their customers by email.

Ally said the move reflected how interest rates are “on the downswing and projected to fall further,” according to an email sent to customers.

Marcus also said the its rate reduction was  “based on market conditions,” according to an emailed statement from Goldman Sachs spokesman Andrew Williams.

“We aim to always provide competitive rates on all our savings products,” the statement said. “Our online savings account remains more than 4X the national average, and all new and existing customers enjoy the same rate.”

Goodbye high savings rates?

So far, Marcus and Ally are the first to cut rates and don’t yet reflect a bigger trend, said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate.com.

“In fact, just this week Wealthfront increased the payout on their account,” he said. “The savings landscape continues to be very competitive, which is benefiting consumers, and is helping keep savings yields largely in check – for now.”

Auto savings: Here are the 25 least expensive cars to insure

Break for the rich: Is Trump planning another tax cut? If so, it won’t help middle class Americans much

Wealthfront on Wednesday upped the yield on its cash account to 2.57% from 2.51%. Unlike a traditional savings account, a cash account is tied to a brokerage account. The funds are eligible for FDIC insurance through banks partnering with Wealthfront.

There are also more than a handful of banks advertising yields above the 2.15% that Goldman and the 2.1% that Ally are offering, according to an accounting from Bankrate. The top ones include Vio Bank at 2.52%, WebBank at 2.5% and Comenity Direct Bank at 2.48%.

What about CDs?

McBride noted that while savings account yields aren’t changing, rates on certificates of deposits are falling, especially as expectations for a cut in the federal funds rate increases.

“No bank wants to be locked into an above-market payout for any length of time,” he said.

Dow watch: Stocks on pace to post best first half in two decades. Trade deal needed for more gains

Investors are expecting a rate cut at the Federal Reserve’s next meeting at the end of July. Seven in 10 are forecasting a quarter-point reduction, while three in 10 predict a half-point drop, according to CME Group's FedWatch Tool.

That could be enough to affect what banks offer on their savings accounts.

“Yields on savings accounts can be adjusted at any time, which is another reason why they’re hanging in there now,” McBride said. “But a broader move is likely to materialize around the time of an actual Fed rate move.”

Alliance Data

American technology company

Alliance Data Systems Corporation is a publicly traded provider of loyalty and marketing services, such as private label credit cards, coalition loyalty programs, and direct marketing, derived from the capture and analysis of transaction-rich data.

History[edit]

Former headquarters in Plano, TX

Alliance Data was formed from the December 1996 merger of two entities: J.C. Penney's credit card processing unit and The Limited's credit card bank operation, named World Financial Network National Bank.[2]

In August 1998, Alliance Data acquired LoyaltyOne, then-branded The Loyalty Group Canada, for $250 million.[3] The deal gave Alliance Data two valuable business enhancements, Canada's Air Miles Rewards Program and the company behind the popular Air Miles program, LoyaltyOne.[4]

In May 2007, The Blackstone Group, a private equity firm, announced plans to acquire Alliance Data.[5][6] In April 2008, Alliance Data terminated the merger agreement with Blackstone Affiliates.[7][8]

Ed Heffernan was promoted to president and CEO of Alliance Data in February 2009, after being with the company since 1998.[9][10][11]

On June 7, 2019, Ed Heffernan resigned as CEO of Alliance Data and was replaced by Melisa Miller, who previously ran Alliance Data's Card Services division. This change in leadership effectively moved Alliance Data's Headquarters from Plano, TX to Columbus, OH.[12]

Melisa Miller held the role for roughly 6 months before being replaced by former CITI Exec, Ralph Andretta. The current Headquarters is located in Columbus, OH, with 5 additional locations throughout the nation, as well as in Bangalore, India. After the acquisition of Bread finance, Alliance Data decided to divest Loyalty One and Brand Loyalty into their own publicly traded entity known as Loyalty Ventures.[citation needed]

Businesses[edit]

Alliance Data Card Services[edit]

Card Services is a provider of integrated credit and marketing services including private label, co-branded and commercial credit card programs. Alliance Data Card Services manages over 135[13] card programs for retail brands such as Victoria’s Secret, J.Crew, Eddie Bauer, Buckle, HSN, Pottery Barn, Pier 1 Imports, Lexus, Toyota, Williams Sonoma and Wayfair among many others.[14]

In 2011, Alliance Data, in partnership with NICE Systems, was honored with the Operational Leadership Award for its customer care centers by Ventana Research.[15]

Alliance Data Card Services maintains two banks to manage the funding and receivables for its clients' credit programs. In September 2012, the banks rebranded their names from WFNNB (World Financial Network [National] Bank) and WFCB (World Financial Capital Bank) to both operate under the Comenity name, as Comenity Bank and Comenity Capital Bank, respectively.[16]

LoyaltyOne[edit]

LoyaltyOne, located in Canada, provides loyalty marketing programs for North American brands in the retail, financial services, grocery, petroleum, travel, and hospitality industries.

Five businesses make up the LoyaltyOne: Air Miles national reward program, in which approximately two-thirds of Canadian households participate;[17]Colloquy; LoyaltyOne Consulting; Precima; and Squareknot.

Hewitt Associates named LoyaltyOne in their "2014 List of the 50 Best Employers in Canada."[18]

Epsilon[edit]

Epsilon provides a broad range of loyalty marketing services spanning database marketing, direct mail, email marketing, web development, loyalty programs, analytics, data services, strategic consulting and creative services, among others.

Ad Age has ranked Epsilon among the top marketing services firms and direct marketing agencies for several years, and Epsilon has the distinction as being the Top US Agency From All Disciplines and Top US CRM/Direct Marketing Agencies for 2012.[19][20][21][22] It sends billions of permission-based emails every year.[23] Acquired by Epsilon in 2011,[24] Aspen Marketing Services is a marketing services agency headquartered in Chicago, Illinois[25] with locations in the United States and Canada. In 2012, Epsilon reached an agreement to acquire the Hyper Marketing ("HMI") group of companies, the largest privately held digital marketing services agencies in the United States, for about $460 million.

In March 2011, Epsilon detected unauthorized access to its email database, resulting in the theft of email addresses of its clients' customers.[26][27][28]

In late February 2013, Facebook announced partnerships with four companies, including Epsilon, to help reshape its targeted advertising strategy.[29]

Because of Epsilon's growth over the past several years, the company relocated its headquarters to the former Nokia regional headquarters space in Las Colinas, Texas, near Dallas.[30][31]

In March 2014, 60 Minutes interviewed Bryan Kennedy, chairman and CEO of Epsilon, as part of its segment, "The Data Brokers: Selling Your Personal Information".[32]

In April 2019, Publicis Groupe acquired Epsilon for $4.4 billion. This was the second biggest deal in the history of advertising, behind only Dentsu's $5 billion acquisition of Aegis Group in 2012.[33]

Controversy[edit]

In 2010 Epsilon failed to heed warnings to secure data.[34] In March 2011 it was discovered that email addresses from customers of 50 client companies were stolen.[34] The company quickly notified the public about the breach.[35] In June 2011 company executives were called before Congress to answer questions about the security breach.[36]

The top rate you can currently earn from a nationally available savings account is 0.70% annual percentage yield (APY), offered by Sallie Mae's SmartyPig. What Is a High-Yield Savings Account?

As the name implies, high-yield savings accounts pay much higher interest rates than traditional ones. Typically offered online, whether by an internet-only bank or a brick-and-mortar institution, they're based on the idea that it's smart to hold your savings wherever it can earn a competitively high yield, even if that's a different bank than where you hold your checking account.

The difference in interest rates can be dramatic, with the top savings accounts in the country typically paying 15 to 20 times the national average rate. You can still keep your checking account where it is because it's simple to link a high-yield savings account to your primary account for easy transfers.

Is My Money Safe in an Online Savings Account?

The vast majority of banks, whether physical or online, carry FDIC insurance, which protects banking customers by insuring up to $250,000 of their deposits at any one institution if the bank fails. The U.S. government similarly backs credit union customers up to $250,000 by providing NCUA insurance to the vast majority of credit institutions.

So whether your institution has branches or is an internet-only bank, your deposits are equally safe and protected. Just be sure to check for the FDIC or NCUA logo before you begin doing business with any new financial institution.

What Is the Difference Between a High-Interest Savings Account and a Money Market Account?

Savings accounts and money market accounts are close cousins. Both allow you to move money in and out at your convenience, with their main function being to provide an option for you to sock away savings while earning interest on your balance. In addition, the federal regulation that limits savings account withdrawals to six per month is applied to both types of accounts.

Traditionally, what differs between savings and money market accounts is that money market accounts include the option to write checks on the account. In contrast, savings accounts typically only allow fund withdrawals via electronic transfer, ATM cards (when offered), or in-branch visits.

How Often Do Savings Rates Change?

The APY that a savings account pays on the day you make your initial deposit is not guaranteed. In fact, the account’s rate can change at any time.

Whether the rate goes up or down, and how often it changes, is largely influenced by the Federal Reserve. When it adjusts the federal funds rate, banks and credit unions often follow suit in the same direction.

That said, rate changes among savings accounts are not typically a daily or weekly event. Barring recent moves by the Fed, rates often remain at the same level for weeks or months at a time.
