Had an awesome meal in the bar area today 07/01/2021, Thursday. We were seated with Cedra (spelling?). Absolutely recommend! She's got a great personality, places orders, to come out in the order they're placed, this is golden!! Doesn't matter what you order, it's all good, if you're looking for a drink, personally recommend the Billionaire, it's tasty. Please don't drink and drink, it's fairly strong! Don Jose's is a favorite that I don't get back to often, having moved out of state. Today was awesome!

Had dinner with my family over the weekend. The service was great. We ordered the mango margarita and skinny margarita both were very good! As for the food the taquito appetizer is good, for our entrees we had the enchiladas verdes and mole enchiladas both were good, not really authentic like Mexico but good. I would defiantly go back more so for the drinks.

I have very mixed feelings about this place. I love me some Mexican Food don't get me wrong but this place didn't quite hit the spot. Came here with my coworkers for a lunch meeting. Place was not packed at all. Plenty of seating around 12pm-1pm. Service was great. We were seated as soon as we walked in and asked for drinks as soon as we sat down and came to check on us regularly. They offer complimentary chips and salsa but the salsa was not spicy at all. It was like tomato sauce. I asked them for a spicy one to which they brought another one and that one was not even spicy either. It was just smoky. Maybe I am just used to salsas that are too spicy but I just was not impressed. I ordered an order of chicken mole enchiladas and they came with rice and beans. They were okay. The mole sauce was not authentic. it was still good but if you know a real mole sauce this is not it. Rice and beans were pretty much flavorless ibank for mac blank. It is just not authentic Mexican food. I'm sure other things on their menu are delicious but the items I tried just were not that good to me.

Went without regard for the ratings as I generally have to learn my lessons by making my own mistakes. This experience was not an epic fail but a big enough failure that I won't return. The service was awful and I honestly left the smallest tip which hopefully the busboy will get and not share. Our waitress Dora obviously would rather hide than work. $1.95 for THREE CORN TORTILLAS??!?!?! ARE YOU SERIOUS??? Whatever is wrong at this restaurant is more obvious as you continue to wait for the food, never being offered refills, disappearing staff, and I finally hunted down the hostess to pay the check as the waitress disappearing act was getting really friggin old at that point. The tortilla soup was fantastic and worth the price. The enchilada tasted like it came from Goodyear, the tamale was borrrrinnnggg. Beans, rice, salsa failed to impress as well. Tortilla chips were nice. The bar also whips up some really interesting stuff. I give the 3 stars to the chips, soup and drinks. Going back to La Pinata or, frankly almost anywhere else.

Great store front. Nice patio seating. Cadillac margarita and camarones a Diabla were bueno Bueno. Chile relleno, caritas enchilada, beans and service were not.

Me and my husband went to here to celebrate Cinco De Mayo. We were a little skeptical based on some of the reviews, but said what the heck let's try it. Well, I must say we were very disappointed with the food. It's not terrible, but the food had no taste. The chicken wings were the typical frozen wings served at some resturants. My husband had the taco trio. The meat wasn't seasoned and a little dry. He only ate half a taco and left everything else. I ordered the steak and shrimp fajitas. They were not that good. The Tortilla Soup was decent. Happy Hour is only served at the bar. Smh. In all, the food was not that great. We won't return. The service was alright.

  • T G. from Yelp

Pluses- Hot chips and really good salsa. 2 item combo was massive. Chile relleno was acceptable but chile verde enchilada could have been better. Plate was hot. Wait staff were nice. We were seated efficiently. We found it to be a pleasant dinner.

Love this place. I always get the chicken enchilada verde with rice and beans. Great flavors, speedy service. I have been eating here for lunch for years,

  • Ben F. from Yelp

Consistently the best Mexican food in the Bay Area! This family owned restaurant has authentic recipes. I love the mole' enchiladas! Some people around here are too used to Taco Bell to know great Mexican food when they taste it. I lived in Texas for 2 years and have eaten at many Mexican restaurants with authentic food. I have also traveled to Mexico many times. Trust me. You will not disappointed.

  • Cony K. from Yelp

We decided to try this place since we always see it full of customers. It is the WORST Mexican food I ever had!!! Chips were not fresh! Salsa was lack of taste. We ordered Cod Fish Taco, it was kinda fishy and blend! Tortilla soup w/chicken was too salty! The chicken in the Cancun Platter was very dry! Huge disappointment!!! Do not understand why it's so busy!!!

  • Janice Y. from Yelp

Every time I eat at Don Jose's the service is good and the food is really good! I can't say I've had a bad meal or experience at this restaurant and since it's don joses castro valley near my imperfect foods I eat here several times a year. (For many years now). The complimentary chips and salsa are tasty, margaritas are good and I have my three favorite meals: enchiladas verdes, compuesta and dang I can't ever remember the name of the other one.compadres I think. I actually prefer the food at Don Jose's compared with Los Molcajetes.

When Boyfriend and I arrived, we were starving and so ready to eat. The restaurant looked very crowded, however the host was very welcoming and asked us if we would like to sit in the lounge area near the bar as there were no seats in the dining area. The table was a bit wet, so the host asked us to hold on and went to clean it up himself. The waitress was also very kind and diligent. The restaurant is very large with an bar area, small patio, dining room and even a reserved room in the back for large parties and buffets for private events. Boyfriend ordered a Stella and I had a cocktail. It didn't taste strong at first, but it definitely was well mixed. The chips were great and crispy while the salsa was full of flavor and tasty. Our food was really delicious as well. Boyfriend ordered shrimp enchiladas and I had chicken fajitas. They really do give you alot of food! I had a plate for the sides such as beans, rice, guac, salsa and four tortillas as well as my large skillet of chicken. I couldn't finish everything, but good thing I came with an eater so Boyfriend finished whatever I couldn't get to. His shrimp enchiladas were also on a very large plate with rice beans and salsa. I would have to say that the food was very good and definitely left me very satisfied. I would recommend this restaurant to a friend for good Mexican food in a lively and casual environment. Ambiance: 3.5/5 Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Overall Experience: 5/5

I had not been here in a long time and my sis and I stopped in for dinner. The interior is nice and clean, place was not too busy for a Thursday night and we were hungry. I had the shrimp enchiladas and sis had don joses castro valley combo fajitas. The enchiladas were A-OK, nothing too memorable. I was happy with the fact they did NOT use those little tiny bay shrimp. They had regular shrimp chopped in larger pieces. The inside of the enchiladas also had tomatos too. No cheese inside, but some on the top. The sauce was actually quite good. The rice was the typical americanized spanish rice and the refried beans were thick and not runny. I hate runny beans. Sis liked her fajitas, said they were tasty. It came with rice, beans and the typical fajita fixins; guac, lettuce and tomato. No cheese which I thought was odd. we had to ask for sour cream which was $2.50 extra. Really? $2.50 for a dollop of sour cream? Service was minimal. I had to ask another server for water, the sour cream and anything else that was needed since our server disppeared into the great unknown. A solid 3 star restaurant. If I'm in Castro Valley again, I'll stop in.

We have been eating here for 10 years and never had a problem. The food is okay- not great, but good for kids. Then tonight I took my mom and kids there. She had the shrimp enchiladas. About an hour after don joses castro valley she began to vomit and have diarrhea. No one else ate the shrimp, so I am assuming that was the culprit. The waitress earned the 1 star. She was great. The food, not so much.
