My Boyfriend (34yrs) and I (27yrs) are planning a little getaway in June and are undecided between the Outer Banks and Myrtle Beach. Any recommendations between the two? And if so any particular resort or cottage resort? Or if is there another great beach resort within reasonable driving distance from Virginia please let me know. Thanks for your help.

We have vacationed at both, and preferred the Outer Banks, but they were completely different types of trips. The Outer Banks has lots of huge homes for rent, and consequently hosts large groups of family or friends. Not much to do at night, so it was quiet and restful.

Myrtle Beach would be terrific with kids or young adults who want to get off the beach and play. There are arcades, movies, amusements parks, mini golf, etc, galore!

I would recommend taking the extra hour and a half and going further south to Charleston, for a younger couple w/no kids, you will find far more to do and see there than Myrtle Beach. And if you want to stay on/near the beach you can choose from Isle of Palms, Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island or Kiawah Island.

Outer Banks all the way! I hate Myrtle Beach, it is an over crowded tourist trap. I have vacationed in Duck, NC a couple of times and am thinking of going there again this summer. The beaches are uncrowded and beautiful! If you go to Corolla there are some areas that you can only get to with a 4 wheel drive vehicle. There are also wild horses that run the beaches.

I also agree with Buckeye in SC about the Charleston, SC. The area is so much nicer than Myrtle Beach, with lots to do. Charleston is my husbands favorite city to visit in the US. If you go to Folly Beach, you should be a strong swimmer though. The currents are strong. But, if you like to surf, it is known as the best surfing beach on the Atlantic. The waves are huge!

+1

We went to MB for a wild but cheap Spring Break. We went to OB for a relaxing but affordable family reunion.

Traffic delays can be a drag. Plan ahead, find alternative routes, and avoid peak travel days. Weekend rule of thumb in the summer season is be on and off the island by 9:00am to avoid possible delays and backups.

Additional Maps

Arriving from the North
Follow I-95 S to Richmond, VA. Take I-64 E toward Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. Take I-64 or I-664 to Chesapeake, Va. From I-64, take Exit 291B to Route 168, the Chesapeake Expressway. Go south on VA-168 to the NC border. Once in North Carolina, 168 turns into US-158 East. Stay on this road. Follow US-158 to the Outer Banks.

Arriving from the West
Take I-95 into North Carolina. Take US-64 East towards Rocky Mount. Follow US-64 East through Williamston and Plymouth, NC. From Plymouth, NC keep going east onto Roanoke Island and the Outer Banks.

Arriving from the South
Coming from South Carolina take I-95 to Wilson NC. Take US-264 East through Greenville and Washington, NC. From Washington, take State Route 30 to Plymouth, NC and follow the directions above via US-64 East to Roanoke Island and the Outer Banks.

Arriving from Norfolk International Airport (ORF)
From Norfolk Airport (ORF) take 64 East for approximately 8 miles to 291B Exit, the Nag Head exit, which will put you onto Route 168 South. Go south on VA-168 to the NC border. Once in North Carolina, 168 turns into US-158 East. Stay on this road. Follow US-158 to the Outer Banks.

Ferry Schedules
Hatteras-Ocracoke: On the Ferry System’s most popular summer route, motorists who arrive at Hatteras before 10am or after 3pm will generally avoid the daily crowds, as will travelers who get to Ocracoke’s South Dock before 2pm or after 7pm. In addition, the busiest summer days on the Hatteras Inlet route are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. People who make their day trips on Monday or Friday stand a much better chance of avoiding long waits. In summer, the ferry runs every 30 minutes beginning at 5am. Here is the ferry schedule.

Milepost System
You’ll notice that streets and businesses are marked by “Milepost” (MP) signs. The Mileposts start at Wright Bridge in Kitty Hawk and continue south to MP 20 near Oregon Inlet. No Milepost markers are posted north of Kitty Hawk or South of Nags Head.

Well Done! You’re ready for the best Outer Banks vacation ever!

Outer Banks vs. Myrtle Beach & Hilton Head

Whoa. Gigi, are you in Savannah? So you're going to bypass all the beaches in SC & NC to go to Virginia Beach. Honestly, I think there are many other beaches so much closer, that you should have a burning desire to go to Virginia Beach in particular. i.e., is Virginia Beach worth the extra hours in a car?

And if you're planning to drop by Duck on your way to or from Virginia, please rethink that. There are 3 routes on and off OBX: down by Hattaras, Roanoke Island (Manteo/Elizabethton), and Nags Head. The closest is Nags Head and it is bumper-to-bumper on the weekends. Also, OBX is HOURS east of the interstate, so you really don't drop by there. It's a destination. Duck is north of the big traffic jam on a single 2 lane road. There are shops and such in Duck, but in and of itself, it's not worthy of a special trip. The beaches at Duck are the least desirable of OBX. (Duck is my least favorite spot at OBX.) However, there are other neat stuff at OBX: several lighthouses (Hattaras & Currituck), the 16th century replica ship Elizabeth II, the outdoor play "The Lost Colony," the Wright Brothers museum, etc.

Good luck.

Top Reasons Why Myrtle Beach is Better than the Outer Banks

In 1903, two brothers from Ohio launched the first vehicle into the air at Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks. It was a big deal back in the day, but since then not much has happened on the sleepy 200-mile strip of islands off the coast of North Carolina.

Meanwhile, Myrtle Beach has been developing like gangbusters since around the same time, amassing a wealth of attractions, restaurants, shopping, lodging, and golf courses that are enjoyed by over 14 million vacationers each year.

Basically, if you want to go sit on a beach and do nothing, go to the Outer Banks. But if you want to sit on a beach and do nothing and then have a shower and go do everything, Myrtle Beach is your best bet.

Here’s why.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Baseball, that Great American Pastime, is one of the most fun and relaxing ways to spend time on a vacation, especially if you have a ticket to see the hometown Pelicans while you’re here. The Class-A Advanced Chicago Cubs’ affiliate are currently enjoying another first place season, and earlier this year Stadium Journey magazine listed TicketReturn.com Field as one of the top 50 stadium experiences in the country for the fourth straight year. The super kid-friendly park hosts nightly promotions that range from running the bases after the game to beer specials and fireworks at least once a week. As for baseball on the Outer Banks, maybe you could get a Wiffle ball and bat and hope it’s not so windy that every pitch flies directly into the Atlantic? Myrtle Beach 1, Outer Banks 0.

The Native Sons Salt Games

The Native Sons Salt Games

This sand-centric event is quickly evolving into one of Myrtle Beach’s coolest affairs, and Outer Banks doesn’t have anything that holds a kite to it. Check out this line-up – surfing, cross-fit, volleyball, 5K, wrestling, hot dog-eating, bikini contest, hula hooping, yoga, skateboarding, lifeguard games, cornhole, and paddleboard racing. Last year’s Salt Games drew over 3,000 spectators and 500 participants competing to see who the best on the beach was. Myrtle Beach 2, Outer Banks 0.

Myrtle Beach International Airport

Myrtle Beach International Airport

Okay, the Wright brothers might’ve invented flight on the Outer Banks, but the closest major airport to the islands is Norfolk International (ORF) which is a solid hour-and-a-half drive away. Meanwhile, the recently-renovated Myrtle Beach International (MYR) offers non-stop service to more than 30 destinations around the country, and the drive from the parking lot to many Grand Strand resorts is no more than five or 10 minutes. Myrtle Beach 3, Outer Banks 0.

Golf Capital of the World

Golf Capital of the World

In addition to the 80 championship courses on the Grand Strand, Myrtle Beach also hosts the annual World Amateur Handicap Championship, the nation’s largest Father & Son Team tournament, and the celebrity and pro-studded Monday After the Masters. The area has also hosted the Senior PGA Tour Championship, The Golf Channel’s Big Break, and was recently named the country’s “Best Golf Destination” by USA Today. We’re sure the Outer Banks has a few nice tracks, but Myrtle Beach has more. Myrtle Beach 4, Outer Banks 0.

Broadway at the Beach

Broadway at the Beach

According to the internet, the Biltmore Estate is North Carolina’s favorite attraction. For the record, that is not on the Outer Banks. South Carolina’s favorite attraction, however, is located in the heart of Myrtle Beach. Specialty shops, restaurants, rides, a movie theatre, miniature golf, an aquarium, boat rides, nightclubs, karaoke bars – you could literally spend all day and most of the night exploring this place without getting bored. Myrtle Beach 5, Outer Banks 0.

Lodging Options

Lodging Options

Sure, there are some hotels on the Outer Banks. But there are more than some hotels in Myrtle Beach. Simple ocean view rooms, deluxe oceanfront four and five bedroom units, beach houses, golf course villas, poolside condos – you name it. And our properties vary from budget-friendly to budget-less, allowing visitors to spend as little or as much as they’d like. Myrtle Beach 6, Outer Banks 0.

World-Class Shopping

World-Class Shopping

There are probably some great buys at Frisco Rod & Gun and Izabelle’s Closet, both located on the Outer Banks. But our visitors are a little more sophisticated. At Tanger Outlets, guests can peruse retail shops like North Face, Polo Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, Coach, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Tommy Bahama, Adidas, and more. And that’s just the popular big name brands. Broadway at the Beach, Coastal Grande Mall, and Barefoot Landing are full of specialty shops, and The Market Common is home to Victoria’s Secret, Anthropolgie, Williams-Sonoma, Bath & Body Works, White House Black Market, CityMac Apple Store, and several unique boutiques.

Outer Banks beach rentals and where to find them

It's easy to see why you might want to score Outer Banks beach rentals right by the coast. Known as front-row properties, they are the getaways that make it just you and the roaring swells, the salt-filled winds, the call of the gulls, and the endless blue horizon of the ocean. This guide takes a look at some of the hottest spots in the archipelago for seaside vacation rentals in the OBX.

Deluxe OBX oceanfront rentals in Corolla

Get ready to discover some of the most opulent Outer Banks oceanfront rentals of all. This is Corolla, an old hunting estate for 19th-century magnates and tycoons, now a well-to-do resort town that's packed with grand beach homes and mansions with sparkling swimming pools. There are haute seafood kitchens to busy those evenings. There are elegant fashion boutiques in the Timbuck II Shopping Village for days of retail therapy. And there's access to seashore preserves where wild horses roam.

Duck is a doozy for OBX beach rentals

There's something of an upscale vibe to Duck, only here it's nuanced with the addition of an East Coast boardwalk laden with chowder stands and surf-and-turf grills, along with the extra adrenaline that comes with sound-side water sports outfitters. What's more, Duck has OBX beach rentals on its eastern side, and countless other waterside homes butting up to the Currituck Sound on its western side. The upshot? There's always somewhere to stay close to the shoreline.

There's beach to go around in Nags Head

One of the busiest vacation destinations on the whole Outer Banks, Nags Head is accessible – the causeway heading across to Roanoke Island joins the OBX here – and laced with tempted draws. There's also enough pristine beachfront for everyone, as the town is strung along 12 miles of coast, fronted by an uninterrupted stretch of sand that's backed by houses. Some of those have views of the ochre-tinted Jockey's Ridge State Park dunes. Others are near the lively fishing pier – a dining hot spot.

Summertime pursuits in Kitty Hawk

Outer Banks oceanfront rentals by owner take a turn for the more family-friendly – and affordable – as soon as you cross onto the south side of Bodie Island and enter the town of Kitty Hawk. It's easy to see why. The area is home to wiggling nature trails and wooded wetland preserves. There's a play museum specifically aimed at the little ones. And you get the wholesome eateries that crowd the end of lovable Jennette's Pier.

The unique stays of Kill Devil Hills

Outer Banks oceanfront rentals start to edge even closer to the white-capping waves and the beaches themselves, until, down in Kill Devil Hills, you'll find homes standing on stilts right on the honey-hued shoreline itself. They'll have you sleeping literally steps from the water, and will often provide big yards, decks, porches, and patios so that you can make the most of the setting. And on days when you tire of the beach? Hit the Wright Brothers National Memorial to unravel heroic stories of American aviation.

Venture to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore

The great dog-leg of the Outer Banks is covered by the wonderful landscapes of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Protected, the closest you're likely to be able to get seaside vacation rentals in the OBX are in the towns of Frisco or Buxton. But even those usually have beautiful visions of empty sand runs and sea-oat meadows, rare nesting sea turtles, and migrating birds on the Atlantic Flyway. The rentals are typically multi-story coast lodges clad in shingle and wood, with living spaces that spill onto sun-splashed decks.

How Clear is the Water on the Outer Banks?

Wondering what the water clarity is like on the Outer Banks? Well, there's no straightforward answer besides: "it changes all the time."

One of the most majestic parts about the Outer Banks (in my opinion) is the volatility of the weather and natural elements. Our strand of barrier islands is not only over 200 miles long (making it possible to have totally different weather conditions in two places) but they're the current mortgage rates california 15 year fixed most stretch of continental U.S. in the Atlantic Ocean. This makes us extremely susceptible to both excellent weather/ocean conditions, and severe weather and harsh conditions.

Don't be deterred. For the majority of late spring, summer, and early fall, the Atlantic Ocean portions off the Outer Banks are very tame and very clear. Wind speed and direction have a great impact on water conditions and clarity, so gentle breezes under 10mph coming from the right directions are favorable. Going a few days without any major storms and swells also leads to a clearer ocean water.

A quick cheat sheet on Outer Banks wind: N = colder air, NE = colder air + choppy warm water, E = warm water, SE = warm air + warm water, S = warm air, SW = warm air + sandy water, W = sandy water, and NW = cooler air + sandy-ish water.

Now that our wind lesson is over, take a gander at some of these pictures from the last few weeks. All of these were just regular days and the water stays that way unless there's a significant weather event to "reset it" per se. It's easy to see the multiple faces the Atlantic Ocean can have. when the wind picks up and the clouds come out, the ocean looks a certain way. When the sky opens up and light breezes are at play, you get a very pretty day!

OBX Ocean Water Colors

(hot day, relatively no wind, nice glassy water)

Clear Ocean Water Outer Banks

(same story)

Water Clarity OBX

(east wind pushing warmer water from Gulf Stream in closer to the banks.)

Water Color of Ocean Outer Banks

(west winds can also help support wave faces, but not much on this day)

Red Flags No Swimming OBX

(northeast wind, no swimming, warm water but threat of rip currents)

Jennette's Pier Outer Banks Nice Beach Day

(classic OBX beach day at Jennette's Pier, plenty of sandbars, clear water, and playful waves)

Outer Banks Clear Ocean

(this. well, this is a few days a year sort of clear and calm.)

Hopefully this helps to explain the ocean water conditions and clarity on the Outer Banks. They do change all the time, but are very pleasant for the majority of the year. We typically have several week-long stretches of perfect first flight federal credit union routing number with a few scattered choppy days now and again. The water clarity does have a great deal of dependence on sunshine, but that's not normally an issue! If you do visit the Outer Banks and the water isn't quite perfect on one day, there is no need to worry as there are tons of other activities both indoors and outdoors.

Outer Banks oceanfront rentals by owner take a turn for the more family-friendly – and affordable – outer banks to myrtle beach soon as you cross onto the south side of Bodie Island and enter the town of Kitty Hawk.
