Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Review: Choose Your Own Bonus Category

The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit cardstands out among other cash-back cards as a great option, despite its complicated terms.

Unlike other cards, the $0-annual-fee card lets you choose your own 3% bonus category from a list of options and change that selection up to once a month. It's an especially good deal for those who can boost their rewards rates by keeping large balances with Bank of America® or Merrill.

The main downside: The card comes with bonus category spending caps, so it's not a good pick for big spenders.

Key features of the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card

Card type:Cash back.

Annual fee: $0.

Sign-up bonus: $200 online cash rewards bonus after you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening..

Ongoing rewards:

While the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card offers potentially valuable rewards for those who spend modestly, its rewards structure is fairly involved.

  • 3% back on a category of your choice (options listed below) and 2% back on grocery stores and wholesale clubs for the first $2,500 of combined bonus category/ grocery store/ wholesale club spending per quarter; after hitting that threshold, you’ll earn 1% back on these purchases.

  • 1% back on all other purchases.

When selecting a 3% back bonus category, you can choose one of the following six options:

  1. Gas.

  2. Online shopping.

  3. Dining.

  4. Travel.

  5. Drugstores.

  6. Home improvement and furnishings.

You can change this category up to once a month. If you don't make a selection, the default 3% cash-back category will be set to gas, according to the issuer. Your selected category will remain the same from month to month, unless you change it.

APR: 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on purchases and balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 13.99%-23.99% Variable APR.

Other benefits:

With this card, there’s no minimum redemption requirement when doing a one-time redemption of cash rewards into your Bank of America® account or statement credit, but there’s still a $25 minimum redemption requirement for other redemption options. Cash back can be redeemed for statement credit, a check, a direct deposit into a Bank of America® checking or savings account, an eligible 529 account or a contribution to an eligible Merrill account. You can also opt to register for automatic redemption.

Before pouncing on this offer, pay close attention to the spending caps on the bonus categories. If you spend far more than $2,500 per quarter on this card's 3% and 2% categories, you might earn more rewards with a different card that doesn't impose such caps.

Benefits of the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card

Ability to choose your own 3% category

There aren’t many rewards credit cards that allow you to choose your own bonus categories. And of those that exist, none of them lets you change your selection up to once a month, as the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card does. That makes the card valuable for cardholders who want choice — especially because the card defines its rewards categories quite generously.

Consider the online shopping category, for example. This category includes purchases made with the following retailers, among others:

  • Amazon.com.

  • Bestbuy.com.

  • Groupon.com.

  • Target.com.

  • Apple.com.

  • Macys.com.

  • Walmart.com.

» MORE:NerdWallet's best credit cards for online shopping

The dining category is similarly wide-ranging. This bonus category isn't just limited to sit-down restaurants; it also includes other eating places, fast-food restaurants, bars, cocktail lounges, nightclubs, taverns and drinking places. That would include, for example, Starbucks, GrubHub and McDonald's, among many other merchants, the issuer confirms. Consider, too, the breadth of the card's home improvement category, which covers retailers from Ace Hardware to Williams-Sonoma, but also things like air conditioning repair, plumbers, landscapers, antique shops, florists and much more. It's one of NerdWallet's top credit cards for new homeowners.

Remember, though, you'll only earn bonus rewards on the first combined $2,500 in purchases on the card's 3% and 2% categories each quarter. After that, you'll earn only 1% on those purchases.

Loyalty bonuses

While the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card promises plenty of choices, its rewards rates are unremarkable compared with other no-annual-fee cards — that is, unless you qualify for the Bank of America® Preferred Rewards program.

Under this program, you can earn 25% to 75% more on your eligible Bank of America® credit card rewards, among other benefits. You can qualify for the Preferred Rewards program when your combined balances in Bank of America® or Merrill accounts surpass certain thresholds. For example, say you kept more than a combined $100,000 in Bank of America® and Merrill accounts, and qualified for the 75% rewards boost. Instead of the usual 3% cash back on the category of your choice, you'd effectively be earning 5.25% back on purchases in that category. That's more than you'd generally earn on other no-annual-fee cards.

Introductory 0% APR period and no annual fee

With the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card, you can come out ahead on rewards no matter how little you spend. That's because the annual fee is $0. The card also comes with an introductory 0% APR offer: 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on purchases and balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 13.99%-23.99% Variable APR. That gives you plenty of breathing room to pay down a large purchase.

Drawbacks and alternatives

Spending caps can limit earning power

The quarterly spending caps on the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card make it a less valuable choice for those who spend thousands of dollars each month. If this is you, a flat-rate rewards card that doesn't impose such restrictions could be a smarter choice.

Try the $0-annual-fee Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer instead. It offers 2% cash back on all purchases: You’ll get 1% back when you make purchases, and another 1% back when you pay them off. That rewards rate alone is enough to put it in direct competition with rewards credit card heavyweights — even those that charge annual fees.

Without loyalty bonuses, rewards rates are modest

The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card offers plenty of good bonus category choices, but if you don't qualify for the Preferred Rewards program, its rewards just go up to 3%, with spending caps.

For a card with customizable rewards that go a little higher, theU.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card – NerdWallet Exclusive Offer could fit the bill. This card offers 5% cash back on your first $2,000 in combined eligible net purchases on two categories of your choice from a list, and 2% cash back on your choice of either gas stations, dining or grocery stores. While the 5% categories on this card are relatively narrow — including, for instance, fast food, cell phone providers, and TV, internet and streaming services, among others — and you can't change your choices as often, this card might prove more valuable if you happen to spend an outsize amount in one of these categories.

For more information on how these cards stack up with each other, see our roundup of best credit cards.

Should you get the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card?

The bonus-category spending caps on the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card can make it a less-valuable deal for those who spend thousands each month. But if you’re a frugal shopper and want to choose your own 3% cash-back bonus category — especially if you keep a lot of money with Bank of America® or Merrill — this card is an excellent pick.

Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card Review: More Details

The Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card’s unique rewards earning scheme may be appealing for someone in the market for a flexible cash back credit card, but the purchase cap on bonus categories limits its potential value. While it can be a good option for moderate spenders looking to earn rewards on everyday purchases, it is not the best option for big spenders looking to maximize cash back.

Earning rate

One appealing feature of the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card is a flexible rewards rate that lets users choose their own bonus category. The card awards 3 percent cash back on a category of choice – gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores or home improvements and furnishings. The card also includes 2 percent cash back on grocery store and wholesale club purchases and 1 percent cash back on general purchases. Just keep in mind that there is a $2,500 combined purchase limit on 2 and 3 percent categories each quarter.

The ability to choose your own bonus category makes the card extremely customizable, especially because you can change your selection once each calendar month. This allows you to maximize your Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card earnings by switching categories based on your upcoming expenses. For example, if you are planning a trip one month, you can opt for the travel option – and then switch the following month to a category you’ll spend more in like gas or dining. This unique feature might be common among business cards, but the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card is one of very few personal cards offering the perk.

The 3 percent bonus category can be very lucrative, as it includes options that typically are a bigger part of your budget – like gas purchases. Plus, the online shopping category is incredibly flexible, as it includes both web and app purchases.

Tip: To help you determine which category is the best choice for you, Bank of America provides regular reports on your spending across the six options. You can look at this to figure out where you spend the most money – and where you can earn the most rewards. You should also keep an eye on how each purchase codes on your statement to know exactly what will earn you a bonus.

Unfortunately, you’ll be limited on how much you can earn with a $2,500 quarterly purchase limit on the 2 percent and 3 percent bonus categories (you’ll still earn 1 percent after you meet the cap). With this restriction in mind, we estimate the average earning rate on the Customized Cash Rewards card to be around 1.63 percent cash back. This places it slightly below the average cash back card.

Sign-up bonus

On the plus side, the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card offers one of the highest sign-up bonuses available on a card with no annual fee. Cardholders can earn $200 online cash rewards for spending $1,000 in the first 90 days. This is a relatively easy spend threshold to reach too, only requiring about $334 a month.

Preferred Rewards program

One unique feature that can add significant value to the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card is the Preferred Rewards program. The program is available to Bank of America and Merrill account holders and comes with a slew of benefits – including a rewards boost on any Bank of America credit card. Depending on your account balance, you could earn 25 percent – 75 percent more cash back on every purchase meaning you could potentially earn up to 5.25% cash back on purchases in your choice category.

Preferred Rewards tiers and rewards boost

TierBalance requiredRewards boostAverage earning rate
Gold$20,000-$49,99925%2.04%
Platinum$50,000-$99,99950%2.45%
Platinum Honors$100,000+75%2.85%

As you can see from the chart above, Preferred Rewards customers, even at the lowest level, earn a very competitive rate of cash back with the rewards boost. We estimate that the average Gold level customer would earn 2.04 percent cash back with the Bank of America Cash card – a rate that beats most other cash back cards, including the Citi® Double Cash Card.

Tip: The rewards boost applies to most Bank of America personal credit cards, including alternatives like the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card. If you prefer earning points to cash back, that is another good option for those wanting to earn Preferred Rewards benefits.

Redeeming cash back

Once you’ve racked up rewards with your Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card, redeeming cash back is pretty simple. There’s no minimum rewards amount to manually redeem cash back for Bank of America checking or savings account electronic deposits or a credit to an eligible Merrill Cash Management Account. However, choosing automatic checking or savings account electronic deposits, check redemptions or one-time contributions to a qualifying Merrill 529 account requires a $25 cash back minimum. Also, rewards don’t expire, so there’s no rush to redeem your cash back in case you haven’t reached the $25 threshold.

Balance transfer offer

In addition to a flexible rewards rate, the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card comes with a decent balance transfer offer. Cardholders can enjoy a 0 percent introductory APR for the first 15 billing cycles for balance transfers made in the first 60 days (13.99 percent to 23.99 percent variable thereafter). The card does charge a balance transfer fee of 3 percent (minimum $10), but that is pretty standard for a balance transfer. Additionally, you must request transfers within the first 60 days to qualify for the intro period.

This is one of the longer introductory periods you can find. Note, if you’re looking to get the biggest savings on a balance transfer offer, some cards allow you to transfer a balance without a balance transfer fee, possibly saving you hundreds of dollars. However, if you are looking for a way to pay down some debt without racking up interest – but don’t want to sacrifice rewards – the Bank of America Cash card could be a good option.

Introductory APR offer on new purchases

The Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card also include a generous introductory APR on new purchases – 0 percent for the first 15 billing cycles (13.99 percent to 23.99 percent variable thereafter). If you are looking for a way to finance a large purchase over several months without paying interest, this is a pretty decent offer.

Other benefits on the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card

The Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card charges no annual fee and although it doesn’t have many additional benefits, it does come with a few extras that can add value to the card, including an extended warranty for eligible purchases made entirely on your card, you can double the manufacturers’ warranty up to one extra year.

Unfortunately, the card’s travel benefits are lacking, and it charges a 3 percent foreign transaction fee. If you are a frequent traveler, the Bank of America Cash card is probably not the best choice for you.

BankAmeriDeals

For cardholders looking to maximize their rewards potential, Bank of America offers a card-linked offers program called BankAmeriDeals. The program is designed to rewards users for everyday spending by offering cash back at a wide range of popular restaurants, clothing stores, gas stations and more. In fact, you might be able to earn up to 15 percent cash back.

To take advantage of one of these deals, you simply need to add them to your Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card and use it to pay when you visit the merchant. Funds will automatically be credited to your account. As you activate and redeem offers, you’ll also earn coins to advance through levels and unlock additional cash bonuses.

Approval odds

The Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card is designed for users with good to excellent credit (above 670), so ensure you meet these requirements before you apply. If you are hoping to transfer a balance, you should also keep in mind that balance transfers are approved separately from your card application – based on your available credit limit.

Customer service

Among major issuers, Bank of America has a fairly solid customer service reputation. In J.D. Power’s 2020 customer satisfaction survey, the bank rated 812, ranking third out of 11 major banks. The bank’s app also rates fairly well among users, rating 4.7 out of 5 in the Google Play Store and 4.8 out of 5 in the Apple App Store.

How does the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card compare to other cash back cards?

Citi Double Cash Card

The Citi Double Cash Card is one of the highest earning flat-rate cards available, and it doesn’t come with an annual fee. The downside is that it doesn’t come with a sign-up bonus either, so you’ll have to hang onto the card for a while to see its long-term value. Despite the lack of introductory offer, the Citi Double Cash Card can easily outpace the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card’s earning rate for most cardholders.

Chase Freedom Flex

The Chase Freedom requires a bit more effort on behalf of the cardholder to earn significant rewards, but it can be very lucrative for savvy spenders. Along with year-round cash back on Ultimate Rewards travel, dining and drugstore purchases, the card offers 5 percent cash back in rotating bonus categories that you activate each quarter (up to $1,500 in purchases per quarter, then 1 percent cash back). This is a great rewards rate, but the spend cap is relatively low.

However, you can also transfer rewards earned on the Chase Freedom to another Chase Ultimate Rewards card – like the Chase Sapphire Reserve card – which gets a 50 percent higher point value when redeemed for travel through the Ultimate Rewards portal.

Bank of America Unlimited Cash Rewards credit card

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance alternative to the Customized Cash Rewards card and maintain a sizeable balance across your eligible Bank of America checking and savings or Merrill investment accounts, the Bank of America Unlimited Cash Rewards card may be your most lucrative flat-rate cash back card option. Thanks to the Preferred Rewards program, if you keep an average of at least $50,000 across these accounts, you can boost your flat cash back rate to 2.25% back. That rate jumps to 2.62% back if you keep an average balance of at least $100,000 across these accounts – easily the highest flat cash back rate avaialble anywhere.

Why get the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card?

  • You have Bank of America checking or savings account with a significant balance and can qualify for a Preferred Rewards boost.
  • You don’t want to pay an annual fee – but still want a decent sign-up bonus and rewards rate.
  • You want a flexible rewards program that can shift as your spending does.
  • You prefer cash back to points or miles.

How to use the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card:

  • Spend at least $1,000 in the first 90 days to earn the sign-up bonus.
  • Enroll in the Preferred Rewards program if you qualify to receive a higher reward rate.
  • Use your card for all choice category and grocery purchases – at least until you hit the spending limit for bonus category purchases.
  • Take a look at your spending each month to see if another 3 percent bonus category could earn more rewards.
  • Pair the Customized Cash Rewards card with the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card to earn extra rewards on your travel and dining purchases.

Is the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card worth it?

If you are a moderate spender who is looking for a flexible rewards card that doesn’t charge an annual fee, the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card is a solid option. The card is also particularly valuable for Bank of America and Merrill Lynch checking and savings account holders, who can boost their rewards earning with the Preferred Rewards program.

However, true cash back enthusiasts are probably better off opting for a card that doesn’t impose such steep restrictions on bonus category earning.

Your wallet may be carrying benefits like cell phone protection, theft protection, and rental car discounts that you aren’t aware of. If you have a Visa Platinum or Visa Signature label card, there are likely unused perks available to you. And if you own multiple credit cards, these Visa cards will likely play a part in building your credit history while offering many benefits that you can enjoy.

Visa Platinum or Visa Signature

Most credit cards are either a Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover card. Some people don’t realize that there are several different tiers of Visa credit cards. Ditto for Mastercards. When talking about credit cards, usually the main topics are signup bonuses or limited-time credit card offers and the perks and benefits that come along with them.

Visa Platinum and Visa Signature cards offer various fringe benefits that most people don’t know much about.

Visa Credit Cards

Just like a hotel or airline loyalty program has different membership tiers, Visa offers four different card levels:

  • Classic
  • Platinum
  • Signature
  • Infinite

When credit cards were still “new,” there was only one type of Visa card. As Visa rolled out new versions with more benefits than previous generations, the original Visa became the Visa Classic. The best type of Visa (and the hardest to qualify for) is the Visa Infinite. And, a Visa Signature is better than a Visa Platinum.

Visa Signature

Let’s look at what the Visa Signature is all about first. You can begin qualifying for select Visa Signature credit cards with a 670+ credit score. However, some cards require a 740 credit score to have the best approval odds.

Visa Signature Benefits

Here are some of the built-in Visa Signature benefits regardless of which bank you get your Visa card from:

  • Minimum $5,000 initial credit limit
  • Secondary rental car collision and theft damage waiver
  • Rental car discounts
  • Special discounts and perks at the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection
  • Extended warranty protection up to 1 additional year

Your bank may build on the above benefits or offer other exclusive benefits:

  • Trip delay reimbursement
  • $100 discount when booking qualifying flights on Visa Signature Discount Air website
  • Emergency cash disbursement
  • Cell phone protection
  • Theft protection

You will need to check with the bank and individual card to see what Visa benefits are included.

Visa Signature Credit Cards

Below are some of the best Visa Signature credit cards. How many of these did you know were a Visa Signature?

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

Arguably the best travel rewards credit card for most people, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns a $50 annual Ultimate Rewards Hotel Credit, plus more. Cardholders can earn points on:

  • 5x points on travel purchases made through Chase Ultimate Reward
  • 5x points on Lyft rides (through March 2022)
  • 3x points on dining, takeout, and qualifying food delivery services (previously 2x points)
  • 3x points on select streaming services
  • Also 3x points online grocery purchases (excludes Walmart, Target, and wholesale clubs)

All remaining travel purchases continue to earn 2x Ultimate Rewards if you book directly from the carrier or a non-Chase travel booking site. Non-bonus purchases earn 1x points.

In addition to the many Sapphire Preferred benefits, members also get a 10% anniversary point bonus (receive 10% of the points you earn each year at your next card anniversary).

You can redeem your points for travel, cash, gift cards, and merchandise rewards. However, your points are worth 25% more when redeemed for any award travel booked on the Chase travel portal.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card currently has an offer of 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months from account opening, worth $750 when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

Additional Chase Sapphire Preferred benefits include unlimited deliveries with no delivery fee and reduced service fees on orders over $12 for a minimum of one year on qualifying food purchases with a DoorDash DashPass subscription. Activate your card by December 31, 2021.

New Chase Sapphire Preferred Benefits

Additionally, cardholders can earn up to $60 in statement credits on Peloton Digital and All-Access Memberships through December 31, 2021.

Points are worth 25% more when redeemed for statement credits against existing purchases in select, rotating categories with the Chase Pay Yourself Back feature.

You can also transfer your Ultimate Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio to airline and hotel loyalty programs including United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and World of Hyatt.

This card also offers primary rental car insurance rather than the standard secondary coverage that Visa offers. With primary coverage, your credit card benefits activate first if your rental car is in a collision or gets vandalized. However, secondary coverage only activates after your other insurance policies go into effect.

Check out the Chase Sapphire Preferred review to see how you can get the most out of this super popular credit card. There is a $95 annual fee for this card.

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is a Visa Signature travel rewards credit card earning 2x miles for every $1 spent on purchases. This card requires “excellent credit“, but it’s possible to qualify with a score of at least 700. You can redeem your miles for travel statement credits, book upcoming travel, and transfer to the Capital One transfer partners.

You get the standard Visa Signature card benefits like secondary auto rental coverage, travel accident insurance, and extended warranty with the Capital One Venture card. Capital One also includes these fringe benefits:

  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee credit, up to $100
  • Wikibuy online shopping tool
  • Paribus price monitoring tool for recent purchases

The Capital One Venture Rewards is often compared to the Chase Sapphire Preferred because of its earning ability and travel perks. Both cards are metal credit cards, earn rewards on travel, have a $95 annual fee, no foreign transaction fees, and more. Compare the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Venture if you like the idea of both but are unsure which is best for your wallet.

New Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card cardholders can earn 60,000 miles after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months.

Visa Platinum

The Visa Platinum at one time was the best Visa credit card tier. Then, Visa launched the Visa Signature and eventually the Visa Infinite. Most Visa Platinum cards are “starter credit cards” and make good best first credit cards for the start of your credit journey. These cards don’t require a security deposit like a secured credit card.

The rewards programs for most Visa Platinum cards are less robust than Visa Signature cards. In fact, some Platinum cards don’t offer any rewards points for any purchase at all. But, each on-time payment can help improve your credit score.

Visa Platinum Benefits

You will see that Visa Platinum cards offer fewer built-in benefits than Visa Signature cards:

  • Minimum $500 initial credit limit
  • Secondary rental car damage and collision waiver
  • Travel and emergency assistance service
  • Extended warranty protection of up to 1 year
  • Visa shopping and travel discounts (available for all Visa credit cards)

If you get a Visa Platinum, you won’t get perks like rental car discounts nor the likelihood your bank will offer more additional card benefits. Yet, despite having fewer rewards, banks are likely to charge an annual fee for these Visa Platinum cards.

Visa Platinum Credit Cards

Below are some of the best Visa Platinum credit cards. These two cards don’t charge an annual fee either!

Chase Freedom Unlimited

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® will either be a Visa Platinum or Visa Signature. For the Visa Platinum, your starting credit limit will be at least $500. The minimum limit is $5,000 for the Visa Signature.

New Chase Freedom Unlimited® cardholders can earn a $200 bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. Plus, they can earn 5% cash back on grocery store purchases (not including Target® or Walmart® purchases) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year.

Cardholders earn unlimited:

  • 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®
  • 3% cash back on dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery services
  • 3% cash back on drugstore purchases
  • 1.5% cash back on all other purchases

These are great opportunities to earn cash back on every purchase, all without worrying about an annual fee. Points can be used for travel, gift cards, and merchandise rewards. You can learn more about it in this Chase Freedom Unlimited review.

You will need a 670 credit score or higher to have the best approval odds. Yet, you can qualify with a score as low as 620 if you have a strong enough credit history or annual income.

There is also fraud protection and you can set up autopay to make things a bit easier. Additionally, you can set up your card in your digital wallet like Apple Pay so you won’t have to worry about making contact with objects or pulling out your card every time you want to make a purchase.

The U.S. Bank Visa Platinum Card is also contactless.

Summary

Still, deciding whether to get a Visa Platinum or Visa Signature? If possible, try for Visa Signature credit cards first as they tend to offer better benefits and purchase rewards. But even if you get a Visa Platinum, it’s possible to earn rewards, get fringe benefits from Visa, and build credit to qualify for better cards.

  • 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®
  • 3% cash back on dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery services

Sign-up bonus: $200 online cash rewards bonus after you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening.
