Since Amazon opened its global stores, many sellers have been wondering whether they can upgrade their Amazon personal accounts directly to accounts of opening global stores. Specifically speaking, it isn’t feasible, but a Amazon personal account can be upgraded to a business account. Here are concrete operational methods.

1.First find the Settings button in the seller’s background and enter the page of Account Info at the drop-down item, as is shown in the picture:

Please note that when filling in the information column of Type of beneficial owner, you should select Corporation on the right side and fill in the information column of Organization Name with a prepared name of your company with qualification, as is shown in the picture:

5. Later, you should fill the information in W-8 carefully according to the address on the business license, and after submission the account registrant in the background represents the name of the company. Consequently, a US Amazon personal account was successfully upgraded to a business account.

Since the second half of 2014, many sellers who registered as individuals on UK site have received an email from Amazon during the process of submitting the data for review. It resembles:

We are writing to inform you that unfortunately we cannot continue with the registration of your Selling on Amazon account as an Individual seller.

If you wish to sell on Amazon we kindly ask you to re-register as a Business. To proceed with the change of your business entity type please reply to this email confirming you wish to change your business entity type. Please note you will be prompted to provide additional information, including a proof you have registered your business with your local authorities.

It aims to tell us that sellers are not allowed to continue to apply as an individual. If they want to go on applying for an Amazon store, they need to provide the qualification of the company.

Till now, I believe that most sellers have also known and accepted this bad news! Some unfortunate UK sellers with a personal account have been announced by Amazon to upgrade it to a business account at the time of registration or operation. 

After receiving the email, we provide the corresponding company qualification as required by Amazon and passe a series of reviews, so we can successfully upgrade and own corporate accounts. This process is much more difficult than upgrade in US, because it is required to check KYC! What if a UK seller with Amazon personal account doesn't receive a notice from Amazon asking for a transition, but wants to upgrade it to a business account?

(please be reminded that if the receiving account has been bound in the background of the UK site, you cannot directly edit Business and Contact Information and Primary Contact Person Information in the background. You need to contact the seller's support if you wanna change information, and a technical team will open the entry for you to edit.)

After entering it is the page of Seller Account Information, we can see that Seller Category is still Individual, and there is a clickable edit button on the right side, as is shown in the picture:

3. Click edit to enter the page of editing information about the company. What is shown here is an individual UK seller’s background. The same is true for Chinese sellers. Fill out the information of Business and Contact Information according to the prompts and the information of your company after entering. It is necessary to confirm that you have registration number of your company, as is shown in the picture:

4. After Amazon personal account is upgraded to a business account, if the main contact and other information need to be updated, they need to be updated step by step in the background.

After the change of type of enterprise in the background, Amazon will require the seller to submit KYC for review in the background.

How to Convert Amazon Payments to PayPal

If you have a seller’s account on Amazon, you deal primarily with Amazon Pay, which is Amazon’s proprietary payment system. However, with the emergence of PayPal in recent years, you may want an efficient Amazon-to-PayPal transfer that can facilitate your financial transactions.

Unfortunately, transferring directly from Amazon to PayPal is not allowed because these two payment methods are in direct competition. Therefore, you’ll need an indirect solution to get your money from your Amazon Pay account into your PayPal account. But as long as both of your payment methods are verified, which means they are linked to a valid bank account, you can get your Amazon withdraw funds into your PayPal account.

It's important to note you must wait until Amazon Pay and PayPal have added your bank account before you can transfer funds from Amazon to PayPal. You also have to select the exact same bank account to link to both your Amazon Pay and PayPal accounts or the transfer won’t work.

  1. Link Your Bank Account to Amazon Pay

  2. To start the process of transferring Amazon payments to PayPal, log in to your Amazon Pay home page. Click the Settings tab at the top of the page, and select you Account Info from the drop-down menu, which takes you to your account information page. Click Deposit Method, which lets you link a verified bank account as one of your payment methods on your Amazon Pay account.

  3. Under Deposit Method, click Edit. Then select your Bank Location Country from the drop-down menu. Type the name of your bank in the empty field, then type the exact name that your bank displays on the statements it sends you each month.

  4. Next, you'll fill in your bank account information, including account number and routing number, and select the Checking option. Click Verify to submit your bank account information. Within five to seven days, Amazon will send verification that your bank account has been added to your Amazon Pay account.

  5. Link Your Bank Account to PayPal

  6. Go to your PayPal account home page and log in. Under My Account, click the Profile tab to access a drop-down menu. Click Add/Edit Bank Account.

  7. Enter your bank account information, including the bank location, bank name, routing number, account number and the name listed on the account. Complete the process by clicking the Submit tab. PayPal will send verification that your bank account has been linked to your PayPal account within three to five days.

  8. Transfer Funds from Amazon Pay to Bank Account

  9. Sign in to your Amazon Pay account, click the Withdraw Funds tab and select Bank Account in the drop-down menu. Click Transfer Funds to a Verified Checking Account and select the Amazon withdraw funds bank account that you previously added. Type the amount you want to withdraw, and then click Continue and then Confirm. You will receive a notification that your withdrawal will take five to seven business days to hit your bank account.

  10. Transfer Amazon Withdraw Funds to PayPal

  11. After your Amazon payment has appeared in your bank account, go to your PayPal account home page and log in. Click Add Money, then click Balance Manager and choose your verified bank account.

  12. Select Add Money from Your Bank Account and enter the amount of money you want to withdraw. Click Continue to complete the transaction. PayPal will send a confirmation that it is processing your withdrawal request and that it can take three to five days for the transfer to go through.

Launching your Amazon Sellers account is a big deal! It’s the start of a business venture that could turn into a serious source of income for you, especially if you find the right product niche. 

For any entrepreneur though, there’s some back office tasks to consider like protecting your business assets and managing your finances. While these aren’t as exciting as selling, they’re crucial in setting up your business for the long term.  

And, one of the most frequent questions we hear from new Amazon sellers is whether you need a business license.

The short answer to the questions is technically no. You don’t need to license or register your business to be able to sell products online including for Amazon.  But, registering your Amazon business as a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) is a simple and inexpensive process that has some major payoffs for your finances and reputation.

Let’s look at when forming an LLC can make sense for an Amazon Business. 

Why Set Up an LLC?

An LLC, or Limited Liability Company, is a formal business structure that offers personal liability protection. An LLC is a “separate legal entity,” which means that your business assets are separate from your personal assets. So, any issues with your business (like getting sued) won’t put your personal assets (i.e., your house) at risk. 

While selling online is relatively low risk, it’s always better to be on the safe side. 

The Advantages of an LLC for an Amazon Business

While you’re not legally obligated to create an LLC, you’ll miss out on these benefits:

Customers are more likely to buy from established companies with business names. One way of demonstrating you’re serious about your business is to form an official business entity such as an LLC.

Follow these easy steps to set up your own LLC for your Amazon business.

1. Name Your LLC

You’ll need to create an original name for your Amazon Seller business. If you already have an idea for a retail brand or name for an ecommerce store, that could be perfect for your LLC name (given that it’s unique).

You should conduct a business entity name search in your state to ensure you don’t choose a business name that already exists. You will need to include a “designator” in the name of your business to show it’s an LLC. This is normally through including a suffix of “LLC” or “Limited Company.” For example: “Perfect Widget Solutions, LLC” or “Ruffpets, Limited Company.”

Pro Tip: If needed, you can register a DBA (Doing Business As) if you would like to conduct business under a name different than your LLC. However, most LLCs don’t need this. You can use your LLC name as your brand name and accept check and other payments under it. 

2. Provide the Address for Your New LLC

Your new business will need to have a designated address. If you’re running a company from home, this can be the same as your home address. If you have a distribution center, it could be that. If you have multiple locations, it would be the address where your “head office” is. This must be a physical street address, not a P.O. box.

3. Assign a Registered Agent for Your LLC

Every LLC must have a registered agent. For smaller LLCs, this might be the same person as the managing director or owner. The registered agent is simply the person who receives official legal and tax correspondence and has responsibility for filing for your Amazon Seller business. A number of online business formation companies will designate a registered agent for you as part of the formation package.

4. Provide the Names and Addresses of LLC Members

The LLC members are the people who own and run your Amazon business. They can take profits out of the business to pay themselves. Most states require you to list the names and addresses of all members when you register the LLC. You can register these addresses as street addresses or P.O. boxes.

5. State the Purpose of Your LLC

Some states require you to explain the purpose of your company. This does not limit you to engaging solely in that type of business — it’s fine to expand into new areas later on. Because you’re selling on Amazon, you can state your purpose as an ecommerce retailer.

6. File the Articles of Organization

Once you’ve gathered all the information together for your LLC, you’ll need to file formal documents with your state agency. Again, usually online formation companies will do this part for you.

8. Get a Federal Tax ID (EIN)

You can’t open a business account at a bank without a Federal Tax ID, also known as an EIN. It’s completely free to apply for an EIN with the IRS online.  Be sure to secure your EIN before heading into a bank to open your account.

Who Can Form an LLC?

Almost anyone in good legal standing who has the right to live and work in the U.S. is able to form an LLC.

But, not all businesses can operate as LLCs. For example, businesses dealing with banking or insurance are typically prevented from forming as an LLC. There are also restrictions from state to state, for example California prevents some types of professionals from starting LLCs. 

Fortunately, there are no rules preventing you from starting up an LLC if you’re selling on Amazon.

Where to Form Your Amazon Seller LLC

If you plan to manage and conduct your business from your home state, it makes sense to form your LLC there. As an Amazon seller, you’ll be selling across the country (and possibly around the world). That doesn’t need to influence where you form your LLC. 

Although there can be some advantages to forming an LLC in Delaware, Nevada or other “business friendly” states, in most cases those benefits won’t apply to your LLC.

Additionally, you will need to file as a “Foreign LLC” if you conduct business in other states. So if, for example, you incorporate in Delaware and then conduct business in North Carolina (like opening a brick-and-mortar store), you’d have to file and pay fees to the government of North Carolina.

When to Form an LLC

If you’re already running your Amazon business and haven’t officially formed a business entity for it yet, it’s a good time to form an LLC. 

If you’re starting an Amazon business in the future, taking a few minutes right now to make sure you form your business properly will give you peace of mind, and let you get on with growing into a thriving Amazon Seller when you launch.

Ongoing Responsibilities for an LLC

Once your LLC is formed, you will have ongoing responsibilities you need to carry out. These include:

  • Filing an annual report with your state’s secretary of state.
  • Reporting income earned (or lost) by your Amazon seller LLC on your personal tax return. Each member of an LLC will need to do this.
  • Paying an annual fee, varies by state.
  • Providing business reports as needed to other LLC members. (This is not a legal requirement, just a best practice.)

Amazon Business is a version of Amazon that offers discounts on millions of products to businesses of all sizes.

It makes purchasing easy and cost-effective by combining Amazon’s familiar one-stop shopping with quantity discounts, price comparisons, approval workflows and multi-user accounts. Pallet shipping is optional.

Amazon Business shares a user interface with its sister site, so you’ll get the same, familiar shopping and easy checkout experience.

Pallet Shipments

If you have an unusually large order, Amazon offers pallet deliveries, which makes it easy for you to consolidate all of your items and receive a large order all in one piece.

If Amazon Business determines that your order is eligible for pallet shipping, your items will automatically be assigned this delivery option.

To qualify for pallet shipping your order must:

  • Be more than 30 cubic feet in size, or
  • Weigh more than 200 pounds
  • Consist only of products located within Amazon’s fulfillment network so that all of your items arrive by the delivery date provided to you during checkout.

How to Set Up an Amazon Business Account

When setting up your Amazon Business account, Amazon may detect, as in the example below, that you already have a regular Amazon account.

1. Getting Started

In this case, you’ll be prompted to sign in as usual.

Next, you’ll choose one of two options for creating an account.

2. Pick An Account Option

You can either:

  1. Convert your existing Amazon account, or
  2. Create a separate account solely for use with the Amazon Business program.

If you choose option #1, be aware that your personal purchases and history will be merged into your business account, and users that you add may be able to see this information.

If you choose option #2, you’ll be asked to enter a different email address for one of your two Amazon accounts.

I chose option 2.

3. Enter Your Name and Create a Password

Next, I was asked to enter my name and create a password.

4. Verify With EIN or Social Security Number

If you’re a freelancer, you can use your Social Security number to sign up.

Next, you’ll be prompted to fill out a verification form. This is to verify your identity and your business’s identity.

You’ll be asked to provide either your business credit card information or your Employer Identification Number (EIN).

If you are a sole proprietor (freelancer, entrepreneur, etc.), you can provide your social security number instead of an EIN.

5. Fast Verification Process

It may take some time for Amazon to review the information you provide, but in our experience, we found that we received responses almost instantaneously (if we provided verification information right away) or within 24-hours (if we opted to skip verification at the time of sign-up).

Verification Tips for Freelancers and Sole Proprietors

If you are a freelancer, and you put “Self” or “Self-Employed” under the name of your business, it’s likely that you’ll be asked for further information.

Specifically, you should plan on providing (in Amazon’s words):

“1. A business card mentioning your company logo and the name.

2. A Word document with declaration that you’re the owner of this company.”

A Note on Personal Prime

Personal Prime does not apply to Amazon Business. But you can buy a subscription to Business Prime.

During this period you should not attempt to sign up for personal Prime for your business account. This is because personal Prime does not apply to Amazon Business.

As Amazon stated in a follow-up email, “If you sign up for a Prime membership while your account is being verified, it will be canceled upon verification. Amazon Business only supports Business Prime.

After you’re verified you may choose to sign up and purchase Business Prime.

How to Sell on Amazon Business

According to Amazon

“Third party sellers make up +50% of our $10 billion annualized sales run rate.”

Sound good? Let’s take a closer look at how you can become a seller on Amazon Business.

Amazon classifies sellers into two groups:

  • If you plan on selling fewer than 40 items per month, you are an Individual seller. You pay no monthly fees, but Amazon does assess fees of $0.99 per item plus referral/variable closing fees.
  • If you plan to sell more than 40 items per month, you are a Professional seller. Accounts cost $39.99 per month, and you pay referral/variable closing fees when you make sales.

If you’re already a Professional seller on Amazon, you can sell for free on Amazon Business.

Becoming a Seller

Becoming a seller and getting ready to sell on Amazon Business requires just three steps:

  1. Register to sell on Amazon: you can register for a Professional Selling Account on Amazon, or (for existing sellers) you can add Amazon Business features using the Seller Central area of your account
  2. Create your business profile: provide details about your business, including any qualifications or certifications that you hold. (Amazon Business supports national diversity and quality certifications and over 150 state certifications.)
  3. Set up your products: use Amazon’s provided listing tools to add your product catalog and display information to potential customers.

Enhanced Product Content

Rather than posting a one-size-fits-all description for products you sell, you can help your customers better understand what you are selling by including specialty information including (but not limited to):

  • Comparison charts
  • CAD files
  • User guides
  • Safety information
  • Spec sheets
  • Installation manuals
  • CoA documents (Certificates of authenticity: can be used to verify your product meets certain specs.)
  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) or SDS (Safety Data Sheets)

As always, you get the same space to display the usual product details (e.g., size, color, quantity) and space for users to leave reviews.

You might also consider the Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) program, where Amazon stores, picks, packs, and ships your products on your behalf.

How to Sell Your Web Design Services to Amazon Business Customers

In addition to selling goods to fellow Amazon Business customers, you can sell professional services. Previously, this option was only open to those plying trades like plumbing, furniture assembly, housekeeping, and electrical.

Note: as a freelancer, you can take advantage of Amazon business to purchase equipment (e.g., laptops, software, office supplies). The same platform can also help you sell the services you produce using those supplies!

Requirements

To sell professional services using Amazon Business, you must:

  • Carry General Liability insurance with a limit of $1 million (USD) per occurrence (average cost of such policies is less than $62 per month with a median price of about $36 per month)
  • Provide license information if you are a trade professional

Application Process

You apply to be a part of the professional services program by providing information on things like your industry, skills, company details, and contact information.

Amazon then reviews your application, and if you are approved, you will receive an activation code you can use to create your account.

You can only participate if Amazon handpicks you — the goal is for Amazon to only work with the best providers, helping you gain trust among potential customers.

Do Your Homework – You’ve Got This

So be sure to have a polished web presence before you apply, a portfolio, and positive client testimonials. (Those with brick and mortar locations and Google My Business accounts, will want a good number of positive Google reviews. Positive reviews on Yelp, Facebook, and other platforms can only help.)

Selling Your Services and Getting Paid

You can sell one-time or recurring services.

When users browse on Amazon, they can see listings for your services while shopping.

Note, however, that you are not required to accept every job that is offered to you. you will get a listing of all jobs for which you are qualified, and you can claim only the ones that best fit your schedule.

You can sell two types of services:

  1. Pre-packaged services, where you define the scope of what you are offering and allow people to purchase based on estimates (e.g., build a website)
  2. Recurring services, where your customers buy a subscription plan that includes recurring appointments

After you complete your job, you will get paid by Amazon, so you do not have to handle the financial aspect yourself.

Costs

There is no upfront cost to getting started with selling professional services on Amazon — you do not have to pay startup, subscription, or advertising fees.

When you do make a sale, however, Amazon takes a portion of your revenue. For pre-packaged services, Amazon takes 20% for the portion up to $1000 and 15% after that. For recurring services, Amazon assesses 15%.

How to Convert Amazon Payments to PayPal

If you have a seller’s account on Amazon, you deal primarily with Amazon Pay, which is Amazon’s proprietary payment system. However, with the emergence of PayPal in recent years, you may want an efficient Amazon-to-PayPal transfer that can facilitate your financial transactions.

Unfortunately, transferring directly from Amazon to PayPal is not allowed because these two payment methods are in direct competition. Therefore, you’ll need an indirect solution to get your money from your Amazon Pay account into your PayPal account. But as long as both of your payment methods are verified, which means they are linked to a valid bank account, you can get your Amazon withdraw funds into your PayPal account.

It's important to note you must wait until Amazon Pay and PayPal have added your bank account before convert to amazon business account can transfer funds from Amazon to PayPal. You also have to select the exact same bank account to link to both your Amazon Pay and PayPal accounts or the transfer won’t work.

  1. Link Your Bank Account to Amazon Pay

  2. To start the process of transferring Amazon payments to PayPal, log in to your Amazon Pay home page. Click the Settings tab at the top of the page, and select you Account Info from the drop-down menu, which takes you to your account information page. Click Deposit Method, which lets you link a verified bank account as one of your payment methods on your Amazon Pay account.

  3. Under Deposit Method, click Edit. Then select your Bank Location Country from the drop-down menu. Type the name of your bank in the empty field, then type the exact name that your bank displays on the statements it sends you each month.

  4. Next, you'll fill in your bank account information, including account number and routing number, and select the Checking option. Click Verify to submit your bank account information. Within five to seven days, Amazon will send verification that your bank account has been added to your Amazon Pay account.

  5. Link Your Bank Account to PayPal

  6. Go to your PayPal account home page and log in. Under My Account, click the Profile tab to access a drop-down menu. Click Add/Edit Bank Account.

  7. Enter your bank account information, including the bank location, bank name, routing number, account number and the name listed on the account. Complete the process by clicking the Submit tab. A Note on Personal Prime

Amazon classifies sellers into two groups:

The following is a comparison of e-book formats used to create and publish e-books.

The EPUB format is the most widely supported e-book format, supported by most e-book readers except Amazon Kindle devices. Most e-book readers also support the PDF and plain text formats. E-book software can be used to convert e-books from one format to another, as well as to create, edit and publish e-books.

The digital book format originally used by Sony Corporation. The LRX file extension represents a DRM encrypted eBook. More recently, Sony has converted its books from BBeB to EPUB and is now issuing new titles in EPUB.

A subset of the DAISY format has been adopted by law in the United States as the National Instructional Material Accessibility Standard (NIMAS), and K-12 textbooks and instructional materials are now required to be provided to students with disabilities.

DAISY is already aligned with the EPUB technical standard, and is expected to fully converge with its forthcoming EPUB3 revision.[2]

DjVu is a format specialized for storing scanned documents. It includes advanced compressors optimized for low-color images, such as text documents. Individual files may contain one or more pages. DjVu files cannot be re-flowed.

The contained page images are divided in separate layers (such as multi-color, low-resolution, background layer using lossy compression, and few-colors, high-resolution, tightly compressed foreground layer), each compressed in the best available method. The format is designed to decompress very quickly, even faster than vector-based formats.

The advantage of DjVu is that it is possible to take a high-resolution scan (300–400 DPI), good enough for both on-screen reading and printing, and store it very efficiently. Several dozens of 300 DPI black-and-white scans can be stored in less than a megabyte.

DOC is a document file format that is directly supported by few ebook readers. Its advantages as an ebook format is that it can be easily converted to other ebook formats and it can be reflowed. It can be easily edited using Microsoft software, and any of several other programs. Note that the format has changed several times since its original release, and there are numerous incompatibility difficulties between various releases and the assorted programs which attempt to read / write the format.

The .epub or OEBPS format is a technical standard for e-books created by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF).

The EPUB format has gained some popularity as a vendor-independent XML-based e-book format. eReader is a freeware program for viewing Palm Digital Media electronic books which use the pdb format used by many Palm applications. Versions are available for Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Palm OS (not webOS), Symbian, Windows Mobile Pocket PC/Smartphone, and macOS. The reader shows text one page at a time, as paper books do. eReader supports embedded hyperlinks and images. Additionally, the Stanza application for the iPhone and iPod touch can read both encrypted and unencrypted eReader files.

The program supports features like bookmarks and footnotes, enabling the user to mark any page with a bookmark and any part of the text with a footnote-like commentary. Footnotes can later be exported as a Memo document.

On July 20, 2009, Barnes & Noble made an announcement[5] implying that eReader would be the company's preferred format to deliver e-books. Exactly three months later, in a press release by Adobe, it was revealed Barnes & Noble would be joining forces with the software company to standardize the EPUB and PDF eBook formats.[6][7] Barnes & Noble e-books are now sold mostly in EPUB format.[8][9][10]

FictionBook (fb2)[edit]

FictionBook[11] is a popular XML-based e-book format, supported by free readers such as PocketBook eReader, FBReader, Okular, CoolReader, Bebook and STDU Viewer.

The FictionBook format does not specify the appearance of a document; instead, it describes its structure and semantics. All the ebook metadata, such as the author name, title, and publisher, is also present in the ebook file. Hence the format is convenient for automatic processing, indexing, and ebook collection management. This also is convenient to store books in it for later automatic conversion into other formats.

Founder Electronics[edit]

Format: Apabi Reader
Published as: .xeb; .ceb

APABI is a format devised by Founder Electronics. It is a popular format for Chinese e-books. It can be read using the Apabi Reader software, and produced using Apabi Publisher. Both .xeb and .ceb files are encoded binary files. The Iliad e-book device includes an Apabi 'viewer'.

Hypertext Markup Language[edit]

HTML is the markup language used for most web pages. E-books using HTML can be read using a Web browser. The specifications for the format are available without charge from the W3C.

HTML adds specially marked meta-elements to otherwise plain text encoded using character sets like ASCII or UTF-8. As such, suitably formatted files can be, and sometimes are, generated by hand using a plain text editor or programmer's editor. Many HTML generator applications exist to ease this process and often require less intricate knowledge of the format details involved.

HTML on its own is not a particularly efficient format to store information in, requiring more storage space for a given work than many other formats. However, several e-Book formats including the Amazon Kindle, Open eBook, Compiled HTML, Mobipocket and EPUB store each book chapter in HTML format, then use ZIP compression to compress the HTML data, images, metadata and style sheets into a single, significantly smaller, file.

HTML files encompass a wide range of standards[12] and displaying HTML files correctly can be complicated. Additionally many of the features supported, such as forms, are not relevant to e-books.

iBook (Apple)[edit]

The .ibooks format is created with the free iBooks Author ebook layout software from Apple Inc. This proprietary format is based on the EPUB standard, with some differences in the CSS tags used in an ibooks format file, this making it incompatible with the EPUB specification. The End-User Licensing Agreement (EULA) included with iBooks Author states that "If you want to charge a fee for a work that includes files in the .ibooks format generated using iBooks Author, you may only sell or distribute such work through Apple". The "through Apple" will typically be in the Apple Apple Books store. The EULA further states that "This restriction does not apply to the content of such works when distributed in a form that does not include files in the .ibooks format." Therefore, Apple has not included distribution restrictions in the iBooks Author EULA for ibooks format ebooks created in iBooks Author that are made available for free, and it does not prevent authors from re-purposing the content in other ebook formats to be sold outside the iBookstore. This software currently supports import and export functionally for three formats. ibook, Plain text and PDF. Versions 2.3 and later of iBooks Author support importing EPUB and exporting EPUB 3.0.[13]

IEC 62448[edit]

IEC 62448 is an international standard created by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Technical Committee 100, Technical Area 10 (Multimedia e-publishing and e-book).

The current version of IEC 62448 is an umbrella standard that contains as appendices two concrete formats, XMDF of Sharp and BBeB of Sony. However, BBeB has been discontinued by Sony and the version of XMDF that is in the specification is out of date. The IEC TA10 group is discussing the next steps, and has invited the IDPF organization which has standardized EPUB to be a liaison. It is possible that the current version of EPUB and/or the forthcoming EPUB3 revision may be added to IEC 62448. Meanwhile, a number of Japanese companies have proposed that IEC standardize a proposed new Japanese-centric file format that is expected to unify DotBook of Voyager Japan and XMDF of Sharp. This new format has not been publicly disclosed as of November 2010 but it is supposed to cover basic representations for the Japanese language. IBM created this e-book format and used it extensively for OS/2 and other of its operating systems. The INF files were often digital versions of printed books that came with some bundles of OS/2 and other products. There were many other newsletters and monthly publications (e.g.: EDM/2) available in the INF format too.

The advantage of INF is that it is very compact and very fast. It also supports images, reflowed text, tables and various list formats. INF files get generated by compiling the markup text files — in the Information Presentation Facility (IPF) format — into binary files.

Originally only IBM created an INF viewer and compiler, but later open source viewers like NewView, DocView and others appeared. There is also an open source IPF compiler named WIPFC, created by the Open Watcom project.

Kindle (Amazon)[edit]

With the release of the Kindle Fire reader in late 2011, Amazon.com also released Kindle Format 8, also known as .AZW3. The .azw3 file format supports a subset of HTML5 and CSS3 features, with some additional nonstandard features; the new data is stored within a container which can also be used to store a Mobi content document, allowing limited backwards compatibility.[14][15][16]

Older Kindle e-readers use the proprietary format, AZW. It is based on the Mobipocket standard, with a slightly different serial number scheme (it uses an asterisk instead of a dollar sign) and its own DRM formatting. It also lacks some Mobipocket features such as JavaScript.[17].prc publications can be read directly on the Kindle.

Because the ebooks bought on the Kindle are delivered over its wireless system called Whispernet, the user does not see the AZW files during the download process. The Kindle format is available on a variety of platforms, such as through the Kindle app for the various mobile device platforms.

Microsoft LIT[edit]

DRM-protected LIT files are only readable in the proprietary Microsoft Reader program, as the .LIT format, otherwise similar to Microsoft's CHM format, includes Digital Rights Management features. Other third party readers, such as Convert to amazon business account Stanza, can read unprotected LIT files.

The Microsoft Reader uses patented ClearType display technology. In Reader navigation works with a keyboard, mouse, stylus, or through electronic bookmarks. The Catalog Library records reader books in a personalized "home page", and books are displayed with ClearType to improve readability. A user can add annotations and notes to any page, create large-print e-books with a single command, or create free-form drawings on the reader pages. In August 2011, Microsoft announced they were discontinuing both Microsoft Reader and the use of the .lit format for ebooks[18] at the end of August 2012, and ending sales of the format on November 8, 2011.[19]

Mobipocket[edit]

The Mobipocket e-book format is based on the Open eBook standard using XHTML and can include JavaScript and frames. It also supports native SQL queries to be used with embedded databases. There is a corresponding e-book reader.

The Mobipocket Reader has a home page library. Readers can add blank pages in any part of a book and add free-hand drawings. Annotations – highlights, bookmarks, corrections, notes, and drawings – can be applied, organized, and recalled from a single location. Images are converted to GIF format and have a maximum size of 64K,[20] sufficient for mobile phones with small screens, but rather restrictive for newer gadgets. Mobipocket Reader has electronic bookmarks, and a built-in dictionary.

The reader has a full screen mode for reading and support for many PDAs, Communicators, and Smartphones. Mobipocket products support most Windows, Symbian, BlackBerry and Palm operating systems, but not the Android platform. Using WINE, the reader works under Linux or Mac OS X. Third-party applications like Okular, Calibre, and FBReader can also be used under Linux or Mac OS X, but they work only with unencrypted files.

The Amazon Kindle can read unprotected .mobi files, as can Amazon's Kindle application for Windows and MacOS. Amazon has also developed an .epub to .mobi converter called KindleGen,[21] and it supports IDPF 1.0 and IDPF 2.0 EPUB format.

Multimedia eBooks[edit]

A multimedia ebook is media and bookcontent that utilizes a combination of different book content formats. The term can be used as a noun (a medium with multiple content formats) or as an adjective describing a medium as having multiple content formats.

The "multimedia ebook" term is used in contrast to media which only utilize traditional forms of printed or text books. Multimedia ebooks include a combination of text, audio, images, video, or interactive content formats. Much like how a traditional book can contain images to help the text tell a story, a multimedia ebook can contain other elements not formerly possible to help tell the story.

With the advent of more widespread tablet-like computers, such as the smartphone, some publishing houses are planning to make multimedia ebooks, such as Penguin.[22]

Newton Digital Book[edit]

Commonly known as a Newton Book,[23] but officially referred to as a Newton Digital Book;[24] a single Newton package file can contain multiple books (for example, the three books of a trilogy might be packaged together). Newton Books are created using Newton Press, or, for more advanced content, Newton Book Maker and Newton Toolkit.

All systems running the Newton operating system (the most common include the Newton MessagePads, eMates, Siemens Secretary Stations, Motorola Marcos, Digital Ocean Seahorses and Tarpons) have built-in support for viewing Newton books, through a system service known as Newton Book Reader. The Newton convert to amazon business account format was released to the public by Newton, Inc. prior to that company's absorption into Apple Computer. The format is thus arguably open and various people have written readers for it (writing a Newton book converter has even been assigned as a university-level class project[25]).

Newton books have no support for DRM or encryption. They do support internal links, potentially multiple tables of contents and indexes, embedded gray scale images, and even some scripting capability using NewtonScript (for example, it's possible to make a book in which the reader can influence the outcome).[26] Newton books utilize Unicode and are thus available in numerous languages. An individual Newton Book may actually contain multiple views representing the same content in different ways (such as for different screen resolutions).

Portable Document Format[edit]

Invented by Adobe Systems, and first released in 1993, PDF became ISO 32000 in 2008. The format was developed to provide a platform-independent means of exchanging fixed-layout documents. Derived from PostScript, but without language features like loops, PDF adds support for features such as compression, passwords, semantic structures and DRM. Because PDF documents can easily be viewed and printed by users on a variety of computer platforms, they are very common on the World Wide Web and in document management systems worldwide. The current PDF specification, ISO 32000-1:2008, is available from ISO's website, and under special arrangement, without charge from Adobe.[27]

Because the format is designed to reproduce fixed-layout pages, re-flowing text to fit mobile device and e-book reader screens has traditionally been problematic. This limitation was addressed convert to amazon business account 2001 with the release of PDF Reference 1.5 and "Tagged PDF",[28] but 3rd party support for this feature was limited until the release of PDF/UA in 2012.

Many products support creating and reading PDF files, such as Adobe Acrobat, PDFCreator and OpenOffice.org, and several programming libraries such as iText and FOP. Third party viewers such as xpdf and Nitro PDF are also available. Mac OS X has built-in PDF support, both for creation as part of the printing system and for display using the built-in Preview application.

Older PDF files are supported by almost all modern e-book readers, tablets and smartphones. However, PDF reflow based on Tagged PDF, as opposed to re-flow based on the actual sequence of objects in the content-stream, is not yet commonly supported on mobile devices. The first e-books in history were in plain text (.txt) format, supplied for free by the Project Gutenberg community, but the format itself existed before the e-book era. The plain text format doesn't support digital rights management (DRM) or formatting options (such as different fonts, graphics or colors), but it has excellent portability as it is the simplest e-book encoding possible as a plain text file contains only ASCII or Unicode text (text files with UTF-8 or UTF-16 encoding are also popular for languages other than English). Almost all operating systems can read ASCII text files (e.g. Unix, Macintosh, Microsoft Windows, DOS and other systems) and newer operating systems support Unicode text files as well. The only potential for portability problems of ASCII text files is that operating systems differ in their preferred line ending convention and their interpretation of values outside the ASCII range (their character encoding). Conversion of files from one to another line-ending convention is easy with free software. DOS and Windows uses CRLF, Unix and Apple's OS X use LF, Mac OS up to and including OS 9 uses CR. By convention, lines are often broken to fit into 80 characters, a legacy of older terminals and walmart prepaid visa debit card balance. Alternately, each paragraph may be a single line.

When Unicode is not in use, the size in bytes of a text file is simply the number of characters, including spaces, and with a new line counting for 1 or 2. For example, the Bible, which is approximately 800,000 words, is about 4 MB.[29]

Plucker is an Open Source free mobile and desktop e-book reader application with its own associated file format and software to automatically generate Plucker files from text, PDF, HTML, or other document format files, web sites or RSS feeds. The format is public and well-documented. Free readers are available for all kinds of desktop computers and many PDAs.

PostScript is a page description language used in the electronic and desktop publishing areas for defining the contents and layout of a printed page, which can be used by a rendering program to assemble and create the actual output bitmap. Many office printers directly support interpreting PostScript and printing the result. As a result, the format also sees wide use in the Unix world.

There are also some other commercial e-book formats used in Chinese digital libraries.

TomeRaider[edit]

The TomeRaider e-book format is a proprietary format. There are versions of TomeRaider for Windows, Windows Mobile (aka Pocket PC), Palm, Symbian and iPhone. Capabilities of the TomeRaider3 e-book reader vary considerably per platform: the Windows and Windows Mobile editions support full HTML and CSS. The Palm edition supports limited HTML (e.g., no tables, no fonts), and CSS support is missing. For Symbian there is only the older TomeRaider2 format, which does not render images or offer category search facilities. Despite these differences any TomeRaider e-book can be browsed on all supported platforms. The Tomeraider website[31] claims to have over 4000 e-books available, including free versions of the Internet Movie Database and Wikipedia.

Open XML Paper Specification[edit]

Open XML Paper Specification (also referred to as OpenXPS) is an open specification for a page description language and a fixed-document format. Microsoft developed it as the XML Paper Specification (XPS). In June 2009, Ecma International adopted it as international standard ECMA-388.[32]

The format is intentionally restricted to sequences of: Glyphs (a fixed run of text), Paths (a geometry that can be filled, or stroked, by a brush), and Brushes (a description of a shaped brush used to in rendering paths).

This reduces the possibility of inadvertent introduction of malicious content and simplifies the implementation of compatible renderers.

Let’s look at when forming an LLC can make sense for an Amazon Business. 

Why Set Up an LLC?

An LLC, or Limited Liability Company, is a formal business structure that offers personal liability protection. An LLC is a “separate legal entity,” which means that your business assets are separate from your personal assets. Pro Tip: If needed, you can register a DBA (Doing Business As) if you would like to conduct business under a name different than your LLC. However, most LLCs don’t need this. You can use your LLC name as your brand name and accept check and other payments under it. 

2. Provide the Address for Your New LLC

Your new business will need to have a designated address. If you’re running a company from home, this can be the same as your home address. If you have a distribution center, it could be that. If you have multiple locations, it would be the address where your “head office” is. This must be a physical street address, not a P.O. box.

3. Assign a Registered Agent for Your LLC

Every LLC must have a registered agent. For smaller LLCs, this might be the same person as the managing director or owner. The registered agent is simply the person who receives official legal and tax correspondence and has responsibility for filing for your Amazon Seller business. A number of online business formation companies will designate a registered agent for you as part of the formation package.

4. Provide the Names and Addresses of LLC Members

The LLC members are the people who own and run your Amazon business. They can take profits out of the business to pay themselves. Most states require you to list the names and addresses of all members when you register the LLC. You can register these addresses as street addresses or P.O. boxes.

5. State the Purpose of Your LLC

Some states require you to explain the purpose of your company. This does not limit you to engaging solely in that type of business — it’s fine to expand into new areas later on. Because you’re selling on Amazon, you can state your purpose as an ecommerce retailer.

6. File the Articles of Organization

Once you’ve gathered all the information together for your LLC, you’ll need to file formal documents with your state agency. Again, usually online formation companies will do this part for you.

8. Get a Federal Tax ID (EIN)

You can’t open a business account at a bank without a Federal Tax ID, also known as an EIN. It’s completely free to apply for an EIN with the IRS online.  Be sure to secure your EIN before heading into a bank to open your account.

Who Can Form an LLC?

Almost anyone in good legal standing who has the right to live and work in the U.S. is able to form an LLC.

But, not all businesses can operate as LLCs. For example, businesses dealing with banking or insurance are typically prevented from forming as an LLC. There are also restrictions from state to state, for example California prevents some types of professionals from starting LLCs. 

Fortunately, there are no rules preventing you from starting up an LLC if you’re selling on Amazon.

Where to Form Your Amazon Seller LLC

If you plan to manage and conduct your business from your home state, it makes sense to form your LLC there. As an Amazon seller, you’ll be selling across the country (and possibly around the world). That doesn’t need to influence where you form your LLC. 

Although there can be some advantages to forming an LLC in Delaware, Nevada or other “business friendly” states, in most cases those benefits won’t apply to your LLC.

Additionally, you will need to file as a “Foreign LLC” if you conduct business in other states. So if, for example, you incorporate in Delaware and then conduct business in North Carolina (like opening a brick-and-mortar store), you’d have to file and pay fees to the government of North Carolina.

When to Form an LLC

If you’re already running your Amazon business and haven’t officially formed a business entity for it yet, it’s a good time to form an LLC.

The format is designed to decompress very quickly, even faster than vector-based formats.

The advantage of DjVu is that it is possible to take a high-resolution scan (300–400 DPI), good enough for both on-screen reading and printing, and store it very efficiently. Several dozens of 300 DPI black-and-white scans can be stored in less than a megabyte.

Adobe Digital Editions uses .epub format for its e-books, with digital rights management (DRM) protection provided through their proprietary ADEPT mechanism. The ADEPT framework and scripts have been reverse-engineered to circumvent this DRM system.[4]

eReader[edit]

eReader is a freeware program for viewing Palm Digital Media electronic books which use the pdb format used by many Palm applications. Versions are available for Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Palm OS (not webOS), Symbian, Windows Mobile Pocket PC/Smartphone, and macOS. The reader shows text one page at a time, as paper books do. eReader supports embedded hyperlinks and images. Additionally, the Stanza application for the iPhone and iPod touch can read both encrypted and unencrypted eReader files.

The program supports features like bookmarks and footnotes, enabling the user to mark any page with a bookmark and any part of the text with a footnote-like commentary. Footnotes can later be exported as a Memo document.

On July 20, 2009, Barnes & Noble made an announcement[5] implying that eReader would be the company's preferred format to deliver e-books. Exactly three months later, in a press release by Adobe, it was revealed Barnes & Noble would be joining forces with the software company to standardize the EPUB and PDF eBook formats.[6][7] Barnes & Noble e-books are now sold mostly in EPUB format.[8][9][10]

FictionBook (fb2)[edit]

FictionBook[11] is a popular XML-based e-book format, supported by free readers such as PocketBook eReader, FBReader, Okular, CoolReader, Bebook and STDU Viewer.

The FictionBook format does not specify the appearance of a document; instead, it describes its structure and semantics. All the ebook metadata, such as the author name, title, and publisher, is also present in the ebook file. Hence the format is convenient for automatic processing, indexing, and ebook collection management. This also is convenient to store books in it for later automatic conversion into other formats.

Founder Electronics[edit]

APABI is a format devised by Founder Electronics. It is a popular format for Chinese e-books. It can be read using the Apabi Reader software, and produced using Apabi Publisher. Both .xeb and .ceb files are encoded binary files. The Iliad e-book device includes an Apabi 'viewer'.

Hypertext Markup Language[edit]

HTML is the markup language used for most web pages. E-books using HTML can be read using a Web browser. The specifications for the format are available without charge from the W3C.

HTML adds specially marked meta-elements to otherwise plain text encoded using character sets like ASCII or UTF-8. As such, suitably formatted files can be, and sometimes are, generated by hand using a plain text editor or programmer's editor. Many HTML generator applications exist to ease this process and often require less intricate knowledge of the format details involved.

HTML on its own is not a particularly efficient format to store information in, requiring more storage space for a given work than many other formats. However, several e-Book formats including the Amazon Kindle, Open eBook, Compiled HTML, Mobipocket and EPUB store each book chapter in HTML format, then use ZIP compression to compress the HTML data, images, metadata and style sheets into a single, significantly smaller, file.

HTML files encompass a wide range of standards[12] and displaying HTML files correctly can be complicated. Additionally many of the features supported, such as forms, are not relevant to e-books.

iBook (Apple)[edit]

The .ibooks format is created with the free iBooks Author ebook layout software from Apple Inc.. This proprietary format is based on the EPUB standard, with some differences in the CSS tags used in an ibooks format file, this making it incompatible with the EPUB specification. The End-User Licensing Agreement (EULA) included with iBooks Author states that "If you want to charge a fee for a work that includes files in the .ibooks format generated using iBooks Author, you may only sell or distribute such work through Apple". The "through Apple" will typically be in the Apple Apple Books store. The EULA further states that "This restriction does not apply to the content of such works when distributed in a form that does not include files in the .ibooks format." Therefore, Apple has not included distribution restrictions in the iBooks Author EULA for ibooks format ebooks created in iBooks Author that are made available for free, and it does not prevent authors from re-purposing the content in other ebook formats to be sold outside the iBookstore. This software currently supports import and export functionally for three formats. ibook, Plain text and PDF. Versions 2.3 and later of iBooks Author support importing EPUB and exporting EPUB 3.0.[13]

IEC 62448[edit]

IEC 62448 is an international standard created by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Technical Committee 100, Technical Area 10 (Multimedia e-publishing and e-book).

The current version of IEC 62448 is an umbrella standard that contains as appendices two concrete formats, XMDF of Sharp and BBeB of Sony. However, BBeB has been discontinued by Sony and the version of XMDF that is in the specification is out of date. The IEC TA10 group is discussing the next steps, and has invited the IDPF organization which has standardized EPUB to be a liaison. It is possible that the current version of EPUB and/or the forthcoming EPUB3 revision may be added to IEC 62448. Meanwhile, a number of Japanese companies have proposed that IEC standardize a proposed new Japanese-centric file format that is expected to unify DotBook of Voyager Japan and XMDF of Sharp. This new format has not been publicly disclosed as of November 2010 but it is supposed to cover basic representations for the Japanese language. Technically speaking, this revision is supposed to provide a Japanese minimum set, a Japanese extension set, and a stylesheet language. These issues were discussed in the TC100 meeting held in October 2010 but no decisions were taken besides offering the liaison status to IDPF.

INF (IBM)[edit]

IBM created this e-book format and used it extensively for OS/2 and other of its operating systems. The INF files were often digital versions of printed books that came with some bundles of OS/2 and other products. There were many other newsletters and monthly publications (e.g.: EDM/2) available in the INF format too.

The advantage of INF is that it is very compact and very fast. It also supports images, reflowed text, tables and various list formats. INF files get generated by compiling the markup text files — in the Information Presentation Facility (IPF) format — into binary files.

Originally only IBM created an INF viewer and compiler, but later open source viewers like NewView, DocView and others appeared. There is also an open source IPF compiler named WIPFC, created by the Open Watcom project.

Kindle (Amazon)[edit]

With the release of the Kindle Fire reader in late 2011, Amazon.com also released Kindle Format 8, also known as .AZW3. The .azw3 file format supports a subset of HTML5 and CSS3 features, with some additional nonstandard features; the new data is stored within a container which can also be used to store a Mobi content document, allowing limited backwards compatibility.[14][15][16]

Older Kindle e-readers use the proprietary format, AZW. It is based on the Mobipocket standard, with a slightly different serial number scheme (it uses an asterisk instead of a dollar sign) and its own DRM formatting. It also lacks some Mobipocket features such as JavaScript.[17].prc publications can be read directly on the Kindle.

Because the ebooks bought on the Kindle are delivered over its wireless system called Whispernet, the user does not see the AZW files during the download process. The Kindle format is available on a variety of platforms, such as through the Kindle app for the various mobile device platforms.

Microsoft LIT[edit]

DRM-protected LIT files are only readable in the proprietary Microsoft Reader program, as the .LIT format, otherwise similar to Microsoft's CHM format, includes Digital Rights Management features. Other third party readers, such as Lexcycle Stanza, can read unprotected LIT files.

The Microsoft Reader uses patented ClearType display technology. In Reader navigation works with a keyboard, mouse, stylus, or through electronic bookmarks. The Catalog Library records reader books in a personalized "home page", and books are displayed with ClearType to improve readability. A user can add annotations and notes to any page, create large-print e-books with a single command, or create free-form drawings on the reader pages. A built-in dictionary allows the user to look up words.

In August 2011, Microsoft announced they were discontinuing both Microsoft Reader and the use of the .lit format for ebooks[18] at the end of August 2012, and ending sales of the format on November 8, 2011.[19]

Mobipocket[edit]

The Mobipocket e-book format is based on the Open eBook standard using XHTML and can include JavaScript and frames. It also supports native SQL queries to be used with embedded databases. There is a corresponding e-book reader.

The Mobipocket Reader has a home page library. Readers can add blank pages in any part of a book and add free-hand drawings. Annotations – highlights, bookmarks, corrections, notes, and drawings – can be applied, organized, and recalled from a single location. Images are converted to GIF format and have a maximum size of 64K,[20] sufficient for mobile phones with small screens, but rather restrictive for newer gadgets. Mobipocket Reader has electronic bookmarks, and a built-in dictionary.

The reader has a full screen mode for reading and support for many PDAs, Communicators, and Smartphones. Mobipocket products support most Windows, Symbian, BlackBerry and Palm operating systems, but not the Android platform. Using WINE, the reader works under Linux or Mac OS X. Third-party applications like Okular, Calibre, and FBReader can also be used under Linux or Mac OS X, but they work only with unencrypted files.

The Amazon Kindle can read unprotected .mobi files, as can Amazon's Kindle application for Windows and MacOS. Amazon has also developed an .epub to .mobi converter called KindleGen,[21] and it supports IDPF 1.0 and IDPF 2.0 EPUB format.

Multimedia eBooks[edit]

A multimedia ebook is media and bookcontent that utilizes a combination of different book content formats. The term can be used as a noun (a medium with multiple content formats) or as an adjective describing a medium as having multiple content formats.

The "multimedia ebook" term is used in contrast to media which only utilize traditional forms of printed or text books. Multimedia ebooks include a combination of text, audio, images, video, or interactive content formats. Much like how a traditional book can contain images to help the text tell a story, a multimedia ebook can contain other elements not formerly possible to help tell the story.

With the advent of more widespread tablet-like computers, such as the smartphone, some publishing houses are planning to make multimedia ebooks, such as Penguin.[22]

Newton Digital Book[edit]

Commonly known as a Newton Book,[23] but officially referred to as a Newton Digital Book;[24] a single Newton package file can contain multiple books (for example, the three books of a trilogy might be packaged together). Newton Books are created using Newton Press, or, for more advanced content, Newton Book Maker and Newton Toolkit.

All systems running the Newton operating system (the most common include the Newton MessagePads, eMates, Siemens Secretary Stations, Motorola Marcos, Digital Ocean Seahorses and Tarpons) have built-in support for viewing Newton books, through a system service known as Newton Book Reader. The Newton package format was released to the public by Newton, Inc. prior to that company's absorption into Apple Computer. The format is thus arguably open and various people have written readers for it (writing a Newton book converter has even been assigned as a university-level class project[25]).

Newton books have no support for DRM or encryption. They do support internal links, potentially multiple tables of contents and indexes, embedded gray scale images, and even some scripting capability using NewtonScript (for example, it's possible to make a book in which the reader can influence the outcome).[26] Newton books utilize Unicode and are thus available in numerous languages. An individual Newton Book may actually contain multiple views representing the same content in different ways (such as for different screen resolutions).

OPF is an XML-based e-book format created by E-Book Systems; it has been superseded by the EPUB electronic publication standard.

Portable Document Format[edit]

Invented by Adobe Systems, and first released in 1993, PDF became ISO 32000 in 2008. The format was developed to provide a platform-independent means of exchanging fixed-layout documents. Derived from PostScript, but without language features like loops, PDF adds support for features such as compression, passwords, semantic structures and DRM. Because PDF documents can easily be viewed and printed by users on a variety of computer platforms, they are very common on the World Wide Web and in document management systems worldwide. The current PDF specification, ISO 32000-1:2008, is available from ISO's website, and under special arrangement, without charge from Adobe.[27]

Because the format is designed to reproduce fixed-layout pages, re-flowing text to fit mobile device and e-book reader screens has traditionally been problematic. This limitation was addressed in 2001 with the release of PDF Reference 1.5 and "Tagged PDF",[28] but 3rd party support for this feature was limited until the release of PDF/UA in 2012.

Many products support creating and reading PDF files, such as Adobe Acrobat, PDFCreator and OpenOffice.org, and several programming libraries such as iText and FOP. Third party viewers such as xpdf and Nitro PDF are also available. Mac OS X has built-in PDF support, both for creation as part of the printing system and for display using the built-in Preview application.

Older PDF files are supported by almost all modern e-book readers, tablets and smartphones. Newer PDF files may not display properly on older e-readers, may not open, or may crash them. However, PDF reflow based on Tagged PDF, as opposed to re-flow based on the actual sequence of objects in the content-stream, is not yet commonly supported on mobile devices. Such Re-flow options as may exist are usually found under "view" options, and may be called "word-wrap".

Plain text files[edit]

The first e-books in history were in plain text (.txt) format, supplied for free by the Project Gutenberg community, but the format itself existed before the e-book era. The plain text format doesn't support digital rights management (DRM) or formatting options (such as different fonts, graphics or colors), but it has excellent portability as it is the simplest e-book encoding possible as a plain text file contains only ASCII or Unicode text (text files with UTF-8 or UTF-16 encoding are also popular for languages other than English). Almost all operating systems can read ASCII text files (e.g. Unix, Macintosh, Microsoft Windows, DOS and other systems) and newer operating systems support Unicode text files as well. The only potential for portability problems of ASCII text files is that operating systems differ in their preferred line ending convention and their interpretation of values outside the ASCII range (their character encoding). Conversion of files from one to another line-ending convention is easy with free software. DOS and Windows uses CRLF, Unix and Apple's OS X use LF, Mac OS up to and including OS 9 uses CR. By convention, lines are often broken to fit into 80 characters, a legacy of older terminals and consoles. Alternately, each paragraph may be a single line.

When Unicode is not in use, the size in bytes of a text file is simply the number of characters, including spaces, and with a new line counting for 1 or 2. For example, the Bible, which is approximately 800,000 words, is about 4 MB.[29]

Plucker[edit]

Plucker is an Open Source free mobile and desktop e-book reader application with its own associated file format and software to automatically generate Plucker files from text, PDF, HTML, or other document format files, web sites or RSS feeds. The format is public and well-documented. Free readers are available for all kinds of desktop computers and many PDAs.

PostScript[edit]

PostScript is a page description language used in the electronic and desktop publishing areas for defining the contents and layout of a printed page, which can be used by a rendering program to assemble and create the actual output bitmap. Many office printers directly support interpreting PostScript and printing the result. As a result, the format also sees wide use in the Unix world.

Rich Text Format is a document file format that is supported by many ebook readers. Its advantages as an ebook format are that it is widely supported, and it can be reflowed. It can be easily edited. It can be easily converted to other ebook formats, increasing its support.

SSReader[edit]

The digital book format used by a popular digital library company 超星数字图书馆[30] in China. It is a proprietary raster image compression and binding format, with reading time OCR plug-in modules. The company scanned a huge number of Chinese books in the China National Library and this becomes the major stock of their service. The detailed format is not published. There are also some other commercial e-book formats used in Chinese digital libraries.

Text Encoding Initiative[edit]

TEI Lite is the most[citation needed] popular of the TEI-based (and thus XML-based or SGML-based) electronic text formats.

TomeRaider[edit]

The TomeRaider e-book format is a proprietary format. There are versions of TomeRaider for Windows, Windows Mobile (aka Pocket PC), Palm, Symbian and iPhone. Capabilities of the TomeRaider3 e-book reader vary considerably per platform: the Windows and Windows Mobile editions support full HTML and CSS. The Palm edition supports limited HTML (e.g., no tables, no fonts), and CSS support is missing. For Symbian there is only the older TomeRaider2 format, which does not render images or offer category search facilities. Despite these differences any TomeRaider e-book can be browsed on all supported platforms. The Tomeraider website[31] claims to have over 4000 e-books available, including free versions of the Internet Movie Database and Wikipedia.

Open XML Paper Specification[edit]

Open XML Paper Specification (also referred to as OpenXPS) is an open specification for a page description language and a fixed-document format. Microsoft developed it as the XML Paper Specification (XPS). In June 2009, Ecma International adopted it as international standard ECMA-388.[32]

The format is intentionally restricted to sequences of: Glyphs (a fixed run of text), Paths (a geometry that can be filled, or stroked, by a brush), and Brushes (a description of a shaped brush used to in rendering paths).

This reduces the possibility of inadvertent introduction of malicious content and simplifies the implementation of compatible renderers.

How to Convert Amazon Payments to PayPal

If you have a seller’s account on Amazon, you deal primarily with Amazon Pay, which is Amazon’s proprietary payment system. However, with the emergence of PayPal in recent years, you may want an efficient Amazon-to-PayPal transfer that can facilitate your financial transactions.

Unfortunately, transferring directly from Amazon to PayPal is not allowed because these two payment methods are in direct competition. Therefore, you’ll need an indirect solution to get your money from your Amazon Pay account into your PayPal account. But as long as both of your payment methods are verified, which means they are linked to a valid bank account, you can get your Amazon withdraw funds into your PayPal account.

It's important to note you must wait until Amazon Pay and PayPal have added your bank account before you can transfer funds from Amazon to PayPal. You also have to select the exact same bank account to link to both your Amazon Pay and PayPal accounts or the transfer won’t work.

  1. Link Your Bank Account to Amazon Pay

  2. To start the process of transferring Amazon payments to PayPal, log in to your Amazon Pay home page. Click the Settings tab at the top of the page, and select you Account Info from the drop-down menu, which takes you to your account information page. Click Deposit Method, which lets you link a verified bank account as one of your payment methods on your Amazon Pay account.

  3. Under Deposit Method, click Edit. Then select your Bank Location Country from the drop-down menu. Type the name of your bank in the empty field, then type the exact name that your bank displays on the statements it sends you each month.

  4. Next, you'll fill in your bank account information, including account number and routing number, and select the Checking option. Click Verify to submit your bank account information. Within five to seven days, Amazon will send verification that your bank account has been added to your Amazon Pay account.

  5. Link Your Bank Account to PayPal

  6. Go to your PayPal account home page and log in. Under My Account, click the Profile tab to access a drop-down menu. Click Add/Edit Bank Account.

  7. Enter your bank account information, including the bank location, bank name, routing number, account number and the name listed on the account. Complete the process by clicking the Submit tab. PayPal will send verification that your bank account has been linked to your PayPal account within three to five days.

  8. Transfer Funds from Amazon Pay to Bank Account

  9. Sign in to your Amazon Pay account, click the Withdraw Funds tab and select Bank Account in the drop-down menu. Click Transfer Funds to a Verified Checking Account and select the Amazon withdraw funds bank account that you previously added. Type the amount you want to withdraw, and then click Continue and then Confirm. You will receive a notification that your withdrawal will take five to seven business days to hit your bank account.

  11. After your Amazon payment has appeared in your bank account, go to your PayPal account home page and log in. Click Add Money, then click Balance Manager and choose your verified bank account.

  12. Select Add Money from Your Bank Account and enter the amount of money you want to withdraw. Click Continue to complete the transaction. PayPal will send a confirmation that it is processing your withdrawal request and that it can take three to five days for the transfer to go through.
