Good morning everyone, happy Friday!  Over the last few months, I have written about several changes regarding Wells Fargo checking and savings accounts:

In today’s post, Wells Fargo made changes to closing accounts and charging fees on accounts with a zero balance.  These changes are effective August 9, 2021 (so they are already live and should appear on your next monthly statement).  The key part of this change is:

Accounts with a zero balance will continue to be charged applicable fees (like the monthly service fee) until you request to close your account. We may close an account (except analyzed business accounts) with a zero balance on the fee period ending date or at month end without prior notification to you. Once an account is closed (either by you or us), no fees will be assessed on the account.”

If your Wells Fargo account has a zero balance, you will need to have at least 1 “qualifying transaction posted within the last two months of the most recent fee period ending date” and “IOLTA and RETA accounts require a qualifying transaction within ten months of the most recent fee period ending date.”  I had to google IOLTA and RETA and found out that they stand for Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Account (IOLTA) and Real Estate Trust Account (RETA).

Here is what counts as a qualifying transaction: “deposits and withdrawals made at a branch, ATM, online, mobile, or via telephone; one-time and recurring transfers made at a branch, ATM, online, mobile, or via telephone; automatic or electronic deposits, such as from payroll or government benefits; automatic or electronic payments, including Bill Pay; one-time and recurring purchases or payments made using a card or mobile device; and checks paid from the account. IOLTA and RETA accounts are not eligible for ATM cards or debit cards.  Bank-originated transactions, like monthly service or other fees, are not considered qualifying transactions that will prevent closure of an account with a zero balance.”

I did some more digging and found the Opening and Closing Accounts Questions page on the Wells Fargo website.  In order for you to close your Wells Fargo account, your account must have a positive or zero balance (not a negative balance) and you will need to call Wells Fargo at 1-800-869-3557 or go into a Wells Fargo branch to request to have your account closed.  If you keep your account at $0 expecting Wells Fargo to automatically close your account, just be warned that “accounts with a zero balance will continue to be charged applicable fees (like the monthly service fee) until you request to close your account.” And if your account becomes dormant / inactive, you will need to have your account “reactivated before they can be closed. Ask your banker to reactivate your account. Or you can sign on to Online Banking to see if you have the option to reactivate your account online.”

If you want to close your Wells Fargo account, here are the steps I would recommend.  I would bring the account down to $0 and wait for any pending transfers and transactions to post.  I would then call Wells Fargo to request to have my account closed.  I would then keep my eye out for the confirmation email or confirmation letter to arrive from Wells Fargo.  If you have any questions about these new changes, please leave a comment below.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Best Banks for Small Businesses

If you run a small business, a bank account isn’t an option, it's a requirement. Every business should have its own dedicated checking account, and possibly savings, credit cards, and other accounts, to keep cash safe and build a financial record for the business.

But don’t just head to the closest bank and think they will offer the best deal or even all of the features you need in a small business bank. It is important to do research to choose the best bank for your unique business needs. When reviewing accounts, consider some of these features, which may or may not matter for your business: cash deposits, mobile check deposits, free ATMs, keeping all accounts at one bank, interest-bearing checking accounts and in-person customer service.

And while keeping in mind that business bank accounts tend to charge higher fees than personal accounts, you should still seriously consider the costs of a bank account. Major fees for business bank accounts include monthly account fees, excess transaction fees and excess cash deposit fees.

Because every business is different, there is no perfect account for small businesses. Some small businesses may be happy with an online-only bank that does not charge any monthly fees. Other businesses care more about frequent cash deposits and will never need to deposit a check from their phone.

The only universal desire in small business bank accounts is low fees, so be on the lookout for fees that you may be charged unless you meet specific criteria to avoid them.

Now that we have all that out of the way, let's take a look at the best banks for small businesses.

Best Banks for Small Businesses in 2021

  • Best Overall: Chase
  • Best for Online-Only Checking: Axos Bank
  • Best Credit Union: Navy Federal Credit Union
  • Best for Number of Branches: Wells Fargo
  • Best for Business Analysis: M&T Bank
  • Best Fee-Free Brick-And-Mortar Checking: US Bank

Best Overall: Chase

If you want the traditional bank experience, Chase is your best option as a small-business owner. Chase has locations around the country, offers business checking with no fee as long as you maintain a $2,000 minimum balance, plus one of the best online banking and mobile banking systems available.

Chase is also a great bank for business credit cards. Chase Ink Business Preferred, for example, offers high-value rewards you can use toward free and discounted travel. If you have your checking and savings accounts at the same place, it is easier to manage everything with one online banking login.

In summary, Chase takes the top spot because it offers everything your business might need, lots of locations, and options to dodge monthly service fees. Both small, solo businesses and brick-and-mortar businesses with many employees can easily find their needs met at Chase.

Best for Online-Only Checking: Axos Bank

While Capital One put its Spark Business Checking on hiatus, Axos Bank jumped up to claim the spot for the best online checking account that is currently available for small businesses. Axos Bank opened in 2000 and was a pioneer of online-only banking in the United States. The company has ample experience in providing banking services for both business and personal customers.

The Business Interest Checking account is free with a rather large $5,000 average daily balance, otherwise, you’ll pay a $10 monthly fee. The account includes up to 50 free items per month, so it is not ideal for the busiest businesses with a huge number of transactions or a smaller business that keeps a low daily balance. But it does offer interest, currently 0.80 percent, and great online and mobile banking options.

Axos also offers a basic business checking account with no monthly fee, up to 200 free items per month and other goodies with no interest. Depending on your needs, this may be better than the Business Interest Checking account.

Axos also offers money market and savings accounts for businesses, CDs, and a full suite of cash management services. It’s pretty impressive for any bank, not just online banks. If you don’t need to work with cash but do need a serious bank, consider Axos Bank for your small business banking needs.

Best Credit Union: Navy Federal Credit Union

While it is not technically a bank, Navy Federal Credit Union offers top quality business banking services perfect for a wide range of small businesses. Those include business checking and savings, loans, credit cards, payment processing and even retirement and insurance for you and your employees.

Credit unions are not-for-profit entities. This means they tend to charge lower fees and offer higher interest rates on savings than for-profit banks.

To open a business bank account at Navy Federal, you’ll first need to become a business member. This requires you to join the credit union yourself as an individual first. You’ll also need a $250 opening deposit to get started as a business member and a $5 membership share purchase deposit is also required.

Credit unions are typically geared more toward consumers than businesses but don’t overlook the big opportunity to save money with a business checking and savings account at a credit union.

Best for Number of Branches: Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo is a hugely popular bank, despite some recent bad PR. It is the largest Small Business Administration lender for SBA loans and has more branches than any other bank in the United States.

Wells Fargo offers four different business checking accounts. These accounts all have monthly fees, but you can avoid them with a minimum balance requirement in most cases. For the Initiate Business Checking Account, the minimum is $500 to avoid fees.

Because Wells Fargo is so big, it offers virtually any service your business might need. That includes things like payroll, HR and business tax services. But you may pay more to get many of those services from Wells Fargo than some companies that specialize in those various services.

If your small businesses use a lot of cash, Wells Fargo is one of your best options. Not only can you deposit cash at the largest branch network, but you can also withdraw fee-free from its massive network of ATMs.

Best for Business Analysis: M&T Bank

If you live on the East Coast, consider M&T Bank for your small business banking needs. M&T has 700 branches in New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Virginia, West Virginia, Vermont, and Massachusetts. But M&T stands out for more than its branch network.

M&T Bank offers relationship managers who do more than offer you bank accounts and help you with customer service questions. These bankers review your business finances inside and out to help you better understand them and achieve best small business success.

M&T Bank is a top 10 SBA lender and offers a range of bank accounts. There are five checking options that may be a fit for most small businesses, plus specific accounts for medical and professional services industries. The biggest downside is that you need to maintain a big balance to avoid fees in most of those accounts. To avoid the $10 fee on the basic Simple Checking for Business account, you have to maintain a $2,500 average balance.

Best Fee-Free Brick-And-Mortar Checking: US Bank

US Bank isn’t quite as big as some of its competitors, but it still offers a large network of branches and ATMs around the United States. The biggest standout for small businesses is the Silver Business account, which offers checking with no monthly maintenance fee.

That account is great for smaller businesses with less than 150 transactions per month (you’ll pay .50 each for additional items). You can deposit up to 20 mobile checks each month with no fee and pay the same .50 for additional mobile deposits.

Like others on this list, US Bank offers additional services through a bundle including credit card processing, payroll servicing and invoicing. Other checking accounts have a higher number of free transactions, but require a large balance to avoid monthly services fees up to $25 per account.

Wells Fargo Business Checking Review
Is It Reliable?

Wells Fargo Business Checking Review

Do you require a business bank account, but you’re not sure who has the convenience and features you need? So many financial institutions offer business checking and savings accounts that it’s tough to figure out which one’s the best for you.

To complement your own research, my team and I spent many hours studying the top banks for business. Our goal is to give you the info you need to pick the right bank for your company.

In this Wells Fargo business banking review, I’ll walk you through some pros and cons, pricing and features, customer feedback and much more. Let’s find out if they’re a good fit for your business!

Pros & Cons of Wells Fargo

Pros of Wells Fargo

  • With 13,000 ATMs and over 8,700 branches nationwide, you’re never far away from a Wells Fargo banking location.
  • They offer 4 different checking accounts for businesses of various shapes and sizes. Whether you’re a sole proprietorship or a large company, they have a business checking product for you.
  • Although their business checking does technically come with monthly fees, you’ll rarely if ever pay them. Wells Fargo offers business customers several different ways to get their monthly fees waived, including maintaining a minimum balance and through debit card purchases.
  • If you link one of their business credit cards to your checking account you get some great perks, like cash back on all purchases, travel rewards and more.

Cons of Wells Fargo

  • The rates for their interest checking and savings accounts are low. At 0.03-0.06% APY, there isn’t much incentive to maintain a high balance in these accounts.
  • While their Android apps work well, their iOS integration isn’t great. iPhone customers report lots of issues with Wells Fargo business apps.

Wells Fargo Pricing & Features

Wells Fargo offers customers 4 options for business checking accounts: Simple, Business, Platinum and Analyzed. Check out the basics, then I’ll break down each package for you.

Wells Fargo Pricing & Features

Simple

What It Includes: 50 monthly transactions, $10 monthly fee waived with $500 minimum balance, $3,000 monthly cash deposits.

Who It’s Right For: If you have an entity that doesn’t transact much business — certain types of sole proprietorships, small nonprofits, etc. — you could probably get by with the Simple package.

Choice

What It Includes: 200 monthly transactions, $14 monthly fee with 6 ways to waive (including $7,500 average balance, 10+ debit card purchases and more), $7,500 monthly cash deposits.

Who It’s Right For: Small to mid-sized businesses that perform 10 or fewer transactions per business day will enjoy the relaxed limitations and easy-to-avoid fees.

Platinum

What It Includes: 500 monthly transactions, $40 monthly fee waived with $25,000 average checking balance or $40,000 combined balances between checking/savings, $20,000 monthly cash deposits, interest-bearing (currently 0.03%).

Who It’s Right For: Larger companies with steady customer volume will appreciate the way this package is structured, as it leaves room for growth with its high limits.

Analyzed

What It Includes: Earnings credits offset transaction fees, $20 monthly fee, treasury management services, interest-bearing (currently 0.03%).

Who It’s RIght For: Big businesses that ring up a large volume of transactions on a regular basis should be interested in this package.

Recommended Package

Obviously, there isn’t a “one size fits all” solution here, but I really like the Choice checking account for small businesses. It’s not too terribly restrictive and has some room for growth, while also being a manageable option for any budget.

Keep in mind that if you also get a business credit card from Wells Fargo, you can take advantage of their rewards program which includes cash back, airline tickets, hotels, car rentals and more.

Savings Accounts

Wells Fargo doesn’t have the worst savings interest rates in the industry, but they’re far from the best. They offer two business savings accounts, Market Rate and Platinum.

  • Market Rate: 0.03% interest rate, $6 monthly fee waived with $500 average balance or $25 monthly transfer from business checking account.
  • Platinum: 0.05-0.06% interest rate, $15 monthly fee waived with $10,000 minimum balance.

Customer Reviews

In my experience, it seems like the biggest collections of honest customer feedback for big banks like Wells Fargo are in their mobile app reviews.

In Wells Fargo’s case, it seems that customers are generally pleased with the lack of significant fees and the convenience of having so many branch locations. The most prevalent complaint was about the iOS app itself, which customers say has frustrating load times.

Customer Reviews Last Updated 8-17-17

Conclusion: While performance of their apps can be a bit inconsistent, it’s a good sign that we didn’t identify any other trends in their critical reviews, aside from some customer service issues which come with the territory when you’re a company as big as they are.

In all the hours I spent poring over the details of the best banks for business, I’ve determined that some of them objectively offer better business solutions than others. Still, the goal here is to figure out which one hits the sweet spot of features and convenience for your company.

Wells Fargo is a good choice for business banking due to their easily avoidable fees and their 8,700+ physical branches. It’s always a good idea to know what the competition has to offer though, so let’s also take a look at my personal favorite, Spark Business by Capital One.

Pricing: With Spark Business, there are no fees or minimums for any of their business bank accounts.

Features: You have access to 40,000+ ATMs with Spark Business, compared to 13,000 for Wells Fargo. However, Spark Business is a fully digital product with no branch locations, whereas Wells Fargo has 8,700 branches nationwide. When it comes to savings accounts, the 0.40-1.00% APY with Spark Business is a massive improvement over Wells Fargo’s 0.03-0.06% interest rate.

Customer Support: These are both huge financial institutions with extensive customer service networks. With any company of this size, support agents will vary in quality and some unsatisfied customers are inevitable. The good thing is that neither company has any alarming trends in customer support feedback, and I’ve personally had good experiences with both Spark Business and Wells Fargo agents.

Experience: Wells Fargo is the 3rd biggest bank in the US, and has been around since 1852. Capital One is the 8th largest American bank and opened in 1988.

Wells Fargo tells customers it’s shuttering all personal lines of credit

Wells Fargo is ending a popular consumer lending product, angering some of its customers, CNBC has learned.

The bank is shutting down all existing personal lines of credit in coming weeks and has stopped offering the product, according to customer letters reviewed by CNBC.

The revolving credit lines, which typically let users borrow $3,000 to $100,000, were pitched as a way to consolidate higher-interest credit card debt, pay for home renovations or avoid overdraft fees on linked checking accounts.

"Wells Fargo recently reviewed its product offerings and decided to discontinue offering new Personal and Portfolio line of credit accounts and close all existing accounts," the bank said in the six-page letter. The move would let the bank focus on credit cards and personal loans, it said.

A man walks past a Wells Fargo Bank branch on a rainy morning in Washington.

Wells Fargo CEO Charles Scharf has been forced to make difficult decisions during the coronavirus pandemic, offloading assets and deposits and stepping back from some products because of limitations imposed by the Federal Reserve. In 2018, the Fed barred Wells Fargo from growing its balance sheet until it fixes compliance shortcomings revealed by the bank's fake accounts scandal.

The asset cap has ultimately cost the bank billions of dollars in lost earnings, based on the balance sheet growth of rivals including JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America over the past three years, analysts have said.

It has also affected Wells Fargo's customers: Last year, the lender told staff it was halting all new home equity lines of credit, CNBC reported. Months later, the bank also withdrew from a segment of the auto lending business.

With its latest move, Wells Fargo warned customers that the account closures "may have an impact on your credit score," according to a "Frequently Asked Questions" segment of the letter.

Another part of the FAQ asserted that the account closures couldn't be reviewed or reversed: "We apologize for the inconvenience this Line of Credit closure will cause," the bank said. "The account closure is final."

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a frequent critic of the banking industry, denounced Wells Fargo's decision to pull back the credit lines.

Simplify offerings

Wells Fargo didn't directly answer questions as to what role, if any, the Fed asset cap played in its latest move.

The bank gave this statement: "In an effort to simplify our product offerings, we've made the decision to no longer offer personal lines of credit as we feel we can better meet the borrowing needs of our customers through credit card and personal loan products."

After publication of this article, a Wells Fargo spokesman gave additional remarks: "We realize change can be inconvenient, especially when customer credit may be impacted," the bank said, adding that it was "committed to helping each customer find a credit solution that fits their needs."

Customers have been given a 60-day notice that their accounts will be shuttered, and remaining balances will require regular minimum payments at a fixed rate, according to the statement. When it was offered, the credit lines had variable interest rates ranging from 9.5% to 21%.

The move is a strange one given the banking industry's need to boost loan growth.

After a burst of commercial lending during the early days of the pandemic, loan growth has been hard to muster. Corporations have used money raised in stock and debt issuance to retire bank credit lines, and consumers stuck at home had fewer reasons to use credit cards.

In fact, last year big banks experienced the first aggregate drop in loans in more than a decade, according to Barclays bank analyst Jason Goldberg. Of the four largest U.S. banks, Wells Fargo saw the worst decline.

After banks saw that borrowers held up far better than they had initially feared, the industry recently began marketing new credit cards with large sign-on bonuses in an effort to boost lending.

Making the switch

Wells Fargo doesn't disclose how many customers used the credit lines it is eliminating. It had $24.9 billion in loans in a category called "other consumer" as of March, which was 26% lower than the year-earlier period.

One customer said the change is prompting him to switch banks after more than a decade with Wells Fargo. Tim Tomassi, a Portland, Oregon, programmer, said he used a personal line of credit linked to his checking account to avoid expensive overdraft fees.

"It's a bit upsetting," Tomassi said in a phone interview. "They're a big bank, and I'm a small person, and it feels like they're making decisions for their bottom line and not for customers. A lot of people are in my position, they need a cushion every once in a while from a line of credit."

Tomassi said he is considering opening an account at Ally or Chime, banking players that don't charge overdraft fees.

Conclusion: While performance of their apps can be a bit inconsistent, it’s a good sign that we didn’t identify any other trends in their critical reviews, aside from some customer service issues which come with the territory when you’re a company as big as they are.

In all the hours I spent poring over the details of wells fargo business account status best banks for business, I’ve determined that some of them objectively offer better business solutions than others.

If you run a small business, a bank account isn’t an option, citi visa signature costco login a requirement.
