Who Should Use This Credit Card? People who want to maximize rewards in multiple spending categories and welcome transferring points to airline partners.

Why We Like It

Why We Like the Citi Premier® Card

The Citi Premier Card, from our partner Citi, is worth considering if you’re looking for accelerated travel rewards, but don’t want to pay a huge annual fee. It earns 3X points per dollar on air travel, hotels and spending at gas stations. You’ll also earn 3X points per dollar at supermarkets and restaurants and 1X point on everything else.

It’s easy to quickly rack up lots of points on this card. While you can redeem ThankYou points for gift cards, you’ll get more value when you redeem points for flights and hotels, and potentially even better value when you transfer points to travel partners.

Citi has dramatically improved the ThankYou Rewards program in recent years as well as the cards that earn those points, especially the Citi Premier Card. To compete with American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi has onboarded new airline partners like Avianca LifeMiles and JetBlue TrueBlue.

This credit card offers its members a range of incentives, such as bonus points, gift cards and 1:1 point transfers with airline partners. One of the more unique features of the Citi Premier Card is that it offers 3x ThankPoints for every dollar spent at supermarkets, gas stations, restaurants and travel purchases. Plus, new cardholders can earn 80,000 ThankYou Points after spending $4,000 during the first three months of account opening.

We’ve highlighted a few reasons why opening a Citi Premier Card may be able to help you save and earn more rewards on hotels, your next air-travel trip and more.

Quick Navigation

Rewards Rate

With the Citi Premier Card, you’ll earn 3X ThankYou Points for every dollar you spend at restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, air travel and hotels. For all other qualifying purchases, you will receive 1 point.

Let’s say your car is a gas guzzler, and you typically spend at least $60 on a full tank of gas. When you spend more on gas, you’ll earn more rewards and get to your points goal three times faster. These points can ultimately help set you up for your next road trip with family and friends, or they help you shop for wishlist items using the gift cards you’ve earned.

Imagine getting rewarded for the places you already visit on a frequent basis. If you’re a daily commuter, you’ll get rewarded for what you already do on a regular basis as well. With the Citi Premier Card, you can earn rewards faster for those simple, everyday purchases at the supermarket or ordering takeout at your favorite restaurant.

Sign-Up Bonus

New cardholders can earn 80,000 ThankYou Points after making $4,000 worth of purchases during the first three months of account opening. You can redeem these bonus ThankYou Points as travel rewards or as $800 in gift cards at thankyou.com. Additionally, you can transfer points to any of Citi’s multiple transfer partners.

The Citi Premier Card “makes the everyday more rewarding” and gives you three months to reach the $4,000 spending requirement to earn those 80,000 ThankYou Points. Once you earn these points, they could go toward funding a trip to Hawaii with the family or shopping for some new clothes at any of Citi’s retail partners.

Annual Fee

The Citi Premier Card has a $95 annual fee.

Redeeming Points

The more you spend, the more ThankYou Points you can earn toward future travel, gift cards or other purchases from qualifying online merchants directly through thankyou.com. Your ThankYou Points cover three main categories: purchases, statement credits and gas purchases. However, to get the most from your Citi Premier Card, consider transferring points to Citi’s multiple airline partners.

Transferring Points

In many cases, the transfer ratio between travel partners is a 1:1 ratio. Depending on the airline partner, your points may transfer instantly or take upwards of 14 days.

Furthermore, if you also carry other Citi credit cards such as Citi® Double Cash Card or Citi Custom Cash℠ Card, then you can transfer rewards to your Citi Premier account to pool ThankYou points for future travel.

Airline partners include:

  • AeroMexico ClubPremier
  • Air France KLM Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Etihad Guest
  • EVA Air Infinity MileageLands
  • JetBlue
  • Jet Airways Inter Miles
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Qatar Privilege Club
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
  • Virgin Atlantic FlyingClub

Gift Cards and Shopping

If there’s an air fryer or tech gadget that you’ve been wanting for your new apartment, you can use your ThankYou Points through participating online merchants like Amazon or Best Buy. Or you can hold on to those points a little longer and wait until you reach a bigger reward.

For instance, the ThankYou Points you’ve collected from past purchases can go toward redeeming gift cards for popular brands, like Maggiano’s, Albertsons, Sephora and others. You can also redeem your ThankYou Points at participating gas stations, such as BP, Amco and Shell.

And if you’re thinking of sending flowers to that special someone on Valentine’s Day, you can use your ThankYou Points to cover some or all of the cost with online merchant 1-800-flowers.com.

To shop with your points, select from Citi’s participating online-partners list and link your ThankYou account. The second step is to browse through the partner websites and start shopping. According to Citi, you can specify the amount of ThankYou points you want to use for your purchase upon checkout.

Do ThankYou Points Expire?

One additional perk of the Citi Premier Card is that there is no expiration or limit to the amount of points that you can earn, as long as your account is open and in good standing. This means that you can watch your rewards grow the more you spend on trips and everyday purchases.

Benefits

In addition to 3x ThankYou Points per dollar spent on travel, grocery stores, restaurants and gas stations, the Citi Premier Card also offers cardholders ongoing benefits.

Annual Hotel Savings Benefit

Citi is giving customers the chance to save on hotels with a new offer of $100 in annual hotel savings. Just book a hotel stay of $500 or more through thankyou.com or 1-800-THANKYOU to earn the discount. According to Citi, this deal will be available once per calendar year.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

Planning an international trip? You won’t have to deal with the hassle of any foreign transaction fees if you tend to splurge on gifts for loved ones back home during international travels.

Point Transfer to Airline Partners

Fortunately, Citi also makes it easy to transfer the points to other airline loyalty programs, like JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Flying Club and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer with no fee attached.

Apply for the Citi Premier Card

With the Citi Premier Card, you can earn thousands of ThankYou Points to help you redeem more perks. The annual fee for this card is $95. All you have to do is input your personal and financial information through the secure application process.

In 2021 (and beyond), the sky’s the limit for earning more rewards on things you already purchase every day or on rare occasions. If you’re ready to earn more rewards points for the purchases you already make on a daily basis, you might want to apply for the Citi Premier Card.

Citi ThankYou® Points: What Are They Worth?

Citi is an advertising partner.

The Citi ThankYou® program might not get as much attention as its Amex and Chase counterparts, but if you know how to milk it, this rewards program can be just as lucrative. Between generous credit card sign-up bonuses and a lengthy list of transfer partners that covers all three airline alliances, earning and using Citi ThankYou points has never been easier.

What is Citi ThankYou?

Citi ThankYou is a points-based credit card and banking rewards program associated with Citi. Citi ThankYou points are earned through spending on select Citi credit cards and qualifying Citi checking account activity, and they can be redeemed for various shopping and travel rewards.

How much are Citi ThankYou points worth?

On average, Citi ThankYou points are worth about 0.8 cents each, but it's not hard to get 1 cent per point by redeeming them for gift cards or flights. The easiest redemption options, cash back and statement credits, will only get you 0.5 cents per point, which drags down the average value of Citi ThankYou points.

Citi ThankYou points value

Cash Back$50 Cash Back: 10,000 points0.5 cents

Pros and cons of the Citi ThankYou program

Like all rewards programs, the Citi ThankYou program has both its strengths and weaknesses. Weighing the pros and cons will help you decide whether this is the right program for you.

Pros

You can earn ThankYou points through banking in addition to credit card spending, making this a good program if you're not a big credit card user. Gift card redemptions offer a high value of 1 cent per point, which provides extra flexibility if you don't want to redeem points for travel. ThankYou points can be transferred to over a dozen Citi transfer partners, which mostly consist of airline loyalty programs, as long as you have an eligible credit card.

Cons

ThankYou points offer a lower average value than comparable rewards programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards. Citi's transfer partners don't include any major U.S. airlines. (They do, however, cover all of the major airline alliances). Low value for cashback redemptions compared with competitors, Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership rewards.

How to earn Citi ThankYou points

You can accumulate Citi ThankYou points with an eligible Citi checking account and/or several different Citi credit cards.

Earning Citi ThankYou points with your checking account

To earn ThankYou points with your banking activity, you'll need to have or open an eligible checking account with Citi. It's worth noting that only some of Citi's bank account packages earn ThankYou points, and they often come with bigger monthly service fees that can only be waived if you maintain a certain bank account balance.

You'll also need to have at least one qualifying direct deposit and one qualifying bill payment on each monthly statement, and there are maximums to how many points you can earn through banking. You'll earn ThankYou points a lot faster with a credit card, but banking can be a good way to supplement your credit card rewards if you already bank with Citi anyway.

Earning Citi ThankYou points with a credit card

Citi offers three main credit cards that earn ThankYou points: a no-annual-fee card, a middle-of-the-road card and a premium card. Two of these cards — the Citi Premier® Card and the Citi Prestige® Credit Card — allow you to transfer your points to any of Citi's airline partners, which significantly increases the value of your ThankYou points.

Citi Rewards+® CardEarn 20,000 bonus points after you spend $1,500 in purchases with your card within 3 months of account opening; redeemable for $200 in gift cards at thankyou.comEarn 2X ThankYou® Points at Supermarkets and Gas Stations for the first $6,000 per year and then 1X Points thereafter. Plus, earn 1X ThankYou® Points on All Other Purchases.No$0
Citi Premier® CardEarn 80,000 bonus ThankYou® Points after you spend $4,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account openingEarn 3X points per $1 spent at restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, air travel and hotels and 1X per $1 spent on all other purchasesYes$95
Citi Prestige® Credit CardEarn 50,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 within three months of account opening.Earn 5x points at restaurants and for air travel purchases, 3x for hotel and cruise purchases, and 1x for all other purchasesYes$495

The sign-up bonuses on these credit cards are one of the best ways to accumulate lots of Citi ThankYou points in a short period of time. For lasting value, though, you'll want to pay attention to the earning rate and pick a card that offers bonus points on categories where you spend the most. You'll also want to make sure that your annual earnings outweigh the annual fee.

You're not eligible for these sign-up bonuses if you've previously earned a sign-up bonus on one of these cards, or on the Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card in the past 24 months.

Tip

The cash back earnings from the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer, one of the most popular cashback credit cards thanks to its rewards rate (Earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases.), can be converted to ThankYou points at a rate of 100 points per $1. If you have a Citi card that allows you to transfer your ThankYou points to Citi's airline partners, this could help you earn more value than the card's already lucrative rewards rate.

Best ways to use Citi ThankYou points

Citi ThankYou points offer a lot of flexibility in how they can be used, but some redemption options offer a lot more value than others. Here are the most lucrative ways to use your Citi ThankYou points.

Citi ThankYou Travel

You can redeem your ThankYou points through the ThankYou travel center for flights, hotel stays, cruises and rental cars. The value you'll get from these travel redemptions varies, although you'll get 1 cent per point when you redeem for flights. Typically, you can get more value by transferring your ThankYou points to one of Citi's transfer partners.

Transfer Citi Thankyou points

As long as you have the Citi Premier® Card or the Citi Prestige® Credit Card, you can transfer your ThankYou points to more than a dozen airline loyalty programs at a 1:1 rate. You do have to transfer your points in 1,000-point increments.

While most of Citi's transfer partners are airlines based outside of the U.S., many are part of an airline alliance, which means you get access to a large network of airlines when redeeming those miles. In fact, between all of Citi's transfer partners, you have access to all three of the major airline alliances. In many cases, these airline miles are worth well over 1 cent each, so points transfer tends to be the most lucrative redemption option.

Gift cards

You can also redeem your ThankYou points for gift cards from tons of major brands. These include chain restaurants like Olive Garden and Starbucks; clothing and department stores like Macy's, Kohl's and Saks Fifth Avenue; and entertainment and travel companies like Royal Caribbean and iTunes. While this won't yield as much value as transferring your points, you'll get around 1 cent per point, which is better than what most credit card programs offer for gift card redemptions. It's not a bad option if you can't find a way to redeem your points for air travel.

Other redemption options

Citi offers a slew of other ways to redeem your ThankYou points, including online shopping with Citi's partners, statement, paying bills with points and cash back. These redemption options might be tempting thanks to the high level of flexibility they offer, but unfortunately, they're generally a bad value. You'll only get 0.5 to 0.83 cents per point when you redeem your ThankYou points with these methods, versus the 1+ cent per point you can get by transferring points or redeeming them for gift cards or travel.

How do you cash out Citi ThankYou points?

You can cash out your Citi ThankYou points by redeeming them for statement credits, cash rewards, online bill payments or payments toward your student loans or mortgage. You might not get as much value from these redemptions.

Is Citi ThankYou worth it?

Overall, the Citi ThankYou program offers excellent value to people who prefer to redeem their rewards for air travel. The average value offered by Citi ThankYou points is a little lower than what you'll get from Chase Ultimate Rewards points, but it's on par with Amex Membership Rewards points and Capital One Venture miles.

What really sets the Citi ThankYou program apart from other big rewards programs are its transfer partners. Not only does it boast a longer list of transfer partners than both Chase and Capital One, but Citi's transfer partners also include all three of the major airline alliances, giving you ample redemption options when it comes to flying. If you decide you don't want to redeem your points for travel, Citi ThankYou also offers a higher value on gift card redemptions than the other reward programs.

How do I redeem my Citi ThankYou points?

You can redeem your Citi ThankYou points by logging on to your Citi ThankYou account. From there, you can navigate to the redemption option of your choice to spend your points.

What are Citi ThankYou points good for?

Citi ThankYou points can be used to book travel through the Citi ThankYou center, transferred to one of Citi's airline partners or exchanged for gift cards, statement credits, online shopping, bill payments or cash back. Transferring your ThankYou points will often get you the best value, followed by travel and gift card redemptions.

Can you transfer Citi ThankYou points?

You can transfer Citi ThankYou points to over a dozen airline loyalty programs at a 1:1 rate. Transfers must be made in 1,000-point increments, and once completed, they can't be reversed. Make sure you have a trip in mind before transferring your ThankYou points to one of Citi's transfer partners.

Can you transfer Citi ThankYou points to another person?

You can transfer or share your Citi ThankYou points with another person as long as they're also a member of the Citi ThankYou program. However, shared points are only valid for 90 days from the day they're received, so make sure the other person plans to use them soon.

Is the Citi Premier® Card a Mastercard or Visa?

The Citi Premier® Card is a Mastercard.

When do Citi ThankYou points expire?

While the ThankYou points you earn with your credit card won't expire as long as the account remains open and in good standing, points earned through other avenues can expire. You can check the expiration status of your ThankYou points by logging in to your account and going to the ThankYou Points Summary section. Shared ThankYou points expire 90 days from the date they're received, while points issued by ThankYou Rewards expire three years from the end of the year in which you received them.

How do you link your Citi ThankYou account to Amazon?

First, you'll need to add your eligible Citi credit card as a form of payment on your Amazon account. Use it to make a purchase on Amazon, and you'll automatically be enrolled in the "Shop with points" program, which will give you the option to pay for Amazon purchases with your ThankYou points upon checkout.

How many Citi ThankYou points do you need for a free flight?

The number of Citi ThankYou points you need for a free flight depends on the dollar price of that flight, as your points are worth 1 cent each when redeemed for flights through the ThankYou center. This means that you'd need 40,000 ThankYou points to purchase a $400 flight through this portal. Alternatively, you can transfer your ThankYou points to one of Citi's airline transfer partners. The number of Citi ThankYou points you need in that case will depend on the airline partner and how many miles you need with that partner to purchase the flight you want.

Why the Capital One Venture X Annual Fee Shouldn’t Scare You Off

We get it: No one likes paying annual fees just to hold and use a credit card. Neither do we.

But the best things in the world of travel rewards credit cards don’t come free. A bigger annual fee upfront comes with more travel perks you won’t get on a free credit card, plus money-saving credits that can quickly offset those otherwise pesky annual costs. That’s why we urge all travelers to do the math before ruling out credit cards with an annual fee – and perhaps no travel credit card makes it easier to make sense of that math than the new Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

At $395 a year, its annual fee might still trigger sticker shock, but that’s far cheaper than other comparable premium travel credit cards like the eye-popping $695 fee (see rates & fees) on the Platinum Card® from American Express. And once you start weighing the benefits you get, you’ll see there’s an easy path to not only justify that upfront cost … but to come out ahead.

Follow along and see what we mean.

$300 in Annual Travel Credits

This is the big one. Right off the bat, one huge benefit essentially eliminates all but a small portion of the Capital One Venture X annual fee.

Sure, you pay $395 upfront to hold the card each year. But by doing so, you also get a $300 credit each and every year that covers flights, hotels, or car rentals booked through the Capital One Travel Portal. Just book through the portal, charge your Venture X Card, and that $300 credit will kick in automatically.

While it may be a drag for some to book through the portal rather than directly through an airline or hotel, it should be a cinch to use up that entire $300 credit each and every year. Book a $300-plus flight, and you’re done. Book a few nights at a nice boutique hotel for $300 total or more, and you’ve used it.

Read our guide on how to use the Capital One Travel Portal!

Think of it this way: Are you planning to spend $300 or more on travel each year? Then your annual fee for the Venture X isn’t really $395 a year – it’s more like $95. And if you aren’t the type to spend $300-plus, a premium travel credit card probably isn’t right for you, anyway.

Using up that entire $300 credit will actually go even farther. Consider this: When you book flights on your Venture X Card through the travel portal, you’ll earn 5x points per dollar – and paying for hotels or car rentals, it’s a 10x return. Even when you’re using up that travel credit, you’ll earn the bonus points.

If you max out your credit on hotels or rental cars, you’ll earn 3,000 bonus Venture Miles. Since every Venture Mile is worth at least 1 cent when redeeming towards travel, that’s another $30 in value. If you put it towards flights, that’s 1,500 miles for another $15 in value.

Even if you settle on the lower value, that all adds up to $315 off your upfront annual costs. Before you’ve exhausted any other benefits, your effective annual fee is lower than even the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

$395 annual fee – ($300 travel credit + $15 in miles) = $80 effective annual fee each year

Big Bonus in Year One

Let’s be honest: One of the biggest reasons you’re scoping out travel credit cards is to earn a bunch of points and miles.

You can currently earn 100,000 Venture Miles after spending $10,000 in the first six months. Considering you earn at least 2x for every dollar you spend on the Venture X Card, that means you’ll earn a total of at least 120,000 Venture Miles.

Plus, Capital One is sweetening the deal by also giving you a $200 credit for Airbnb or VRBO stays. That one-time credit is good for 12 months.

This huge offer won’t last forever. It’s still unclear when it may end: All Capital Citi premier card cash back has said is that this is a limited-time offer, without a current end date. Whenever that happens, expect the homestay credit to disappear and to get far fewer bonus miles.

Earning 120,000 miles and more is a big deal, but let’s back up: Credit cards serious business. Opening a flashy new credit card and making charges you can’t afford to pay off immediately is never worth it – especially $10,000 worth. Consumer debt is no joke, especially when you’re paying high interest rates.

But if you can do it responsibly, the additional value here is absolutely undeniable. Bare minimum, you’re getting at least $1,200 towards travel out of those miles – and perhaps much more by leveraging Capital One transfer partners. Check out our guide on how to use Venture Miles!

Just 87,000 Venture Miles could land you this fancy Lufthansa First Class seat!

You should take that $200 homestay credit at face value, too. Just charge your Capital One Venture X for a stay with Airbnb or VRBO within the first year and you’ll automatically get credited up to $200 back.

This is a one-time thing: You won’t get a huge welcome bonus like this again, and the $200 Airbnb credit doesn’t return in year 2. But that means you could score a huge windfall in your first year, then evaluate whether it’s worth keeping in your wallet or ditching it.

But in year 1, the math almost does itself with this big bonus.

$80 effective centurylink bill pay mailing address fee – ($1,200 in miles + $200 homestay credit) = coming out $1,320 ahead in year 1

More Miles Each Year

Capital One has added a novel benefit to the Venture X Card to give you more miles each year – even if you never use your Venture X for another purchase again.

Starting in your second year with the card, you’ll get 10,000 miles every year after you renew your card. At the very least, you can book another $100 in travel with those miles. Use transfer partners right, and it could be much more.

But even conservatively, that’s a good deal. If you rack up more bonus miles by charging your Venture X Card on other travel purchased through the portal, those

Combined with the $300 annual travel credit, it’s a bare minimum of $415 in ongoing value. Once you get past the big bonus, those two items alone are enough to put you back in the black.

$80 effective annual fee – $100 in Anniversary Bonus miles = coming out $20 ahead each year

Other Benefits Add Up, Too

The Venture X boasts a bunch of other benefits that can be harder to quantify, but they could make this an even easier decision.

It’s really up to you how much you value each of these perks and credits. But they can make the value proposition of the Venture X Card even more lopsided.

Bottom Line

The Capital One Venture X annual fee of $395 is a mirage. That’s what this comes down to.

That $395 fee might scare some travelers off from the new Venture X Card – and understandably so. Who wants to pay close to $400 in annual fees? But look past that initial sticker shock, and you’ll find an easy path to completely offset the fee – if not come out far ahead.

No other premium travel credit card on the market makes it so easy to recoup what you pay in annual fees than the Capital One Venture X.

Citi Double Cash

The Citi Double Cash card keeps getting better!  It started its life as a simple fee-free 2% cash back card (which confusingly was advertised as 1% + 1% back).  At that time it was a fine choice for 2% back, but then it went on a roller coaster ride where it got worse, then better, and now even better…

Worse at first: One of the things that used to set the Double Cash card apart from the competition was Citi’s very strong purchase protections such as Extended Warranty, Price Rewind, and more.  Sadly, Citi removed all of these benefits in September, 2019.

Then better: Shortly after dropping purchase protections in September 2019, Citi added the ability to transfer cash back to ThankYou points.  Combined with certain other Citi cards, this made the Double Cash’s rewards more flexible and more rewarding for travel.

Here’s everything you need to know…

Application Tips

Should you apply?

In my opinion, the Double Cash is one of the most rewarding cards available.  For most people I recommend getting the card.

The Citi Double Cash rarely has a signup bonus.  As a result, you may be better off product changing from another consumer Citibank card to the Double Cash card (call Citi to make the change).  One warning: some Citi cards have 24 month restrictions against getting a bonus for the same or a similar card.  For example, the Citi Premier bonus has this restriction:

Bonus ThankYou® Points are not available if you received a new cardmember bonus for Citi Rewards+℠, Citi ThankYou® Preferred, Citi ThankYou® Premier/Citi Premier℠ or Citi Prestige®, or if you have closed any of these accounts, in the past 24 months.

The reason this is important here is that if you product change from one of bank of america new york child support card listed ThankYou cards to the Double Cash card, Citi will record the event as if you closed the ThankYou card account.  That will then reset the clock and you’ll have to wait 24 months before you can qualify for a bonus on a new ThankYou card.

Let’s say, for best budget m 2 ssd, that you have the Prestige card and you want to product change it to the Double Cash, and suppose it has been more than 24 months since you’ve signed up for or cancelled any other Citi ThankYou cards.  In that case, I’d recommend first signing up for another ThankYou card with a good bonus (such as the Citi Premier which has a 60K offer at the time of this writing), and then product change the Prestige to the Double Cash afterwards.

A better choice for a product change is to change from one of Citi’s American Airlines consumer cards.  Take the AAdvantage Platinum Select card, for example.  That card has the following 48 month rule:

American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have received a new account bonus for a Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® account in the past 48 months.

Notice that cancelling an AAdvantage card does not reset the 48 month clock.  So, if you product change from an AAdvantage card to the Citi Double Cash, Citi will record the event as if you cancelled the AAdvantage card, but that won’t hurt your future ability to sign up for that card again.

If you would rather sign up new for the Double Cash and you are near a Citi branch it makes sense to visit to see if there are any in-branch offers for the card.  If you’d rather sign up new, online, click here to find our application link.

Are you eligible?

Given that there isn’t usually a signup bonus for the Double Cash, the only eligibility criteria is whether or not you can get approved.  Compared to other issuers, Citi is usually pretty easy on approvals.

How to apply

Product change to the Double Cash card or look for a signup offer in-branch.  If you want to apply online, you can find the signup link here: Citi Double Cash Card.

Reconsideration

If your application is denied, call reconsideration here: 800-695-5171.  If the reconsideration call doesn’t work, citi premier card cash back the Citi Credit Card Executive Office: 423-477-6858.

Citi Double Cash Disadvantages

The Citi Double Cash card isn’t perfect.  Here are the key things I don’t like about the card:

Foreign Transaction Fees

Don’t use the card outside of the United States.

No Purchase Protections

This card used to have very strong purchase protections such as Extended Warranty, Price Rewind, and more.  Sadly, Citi removed all of these benefits in September.

Perkless

This card doesn’t have any perks worth mentioning.

Rewards

Signup Bonus

This card doesn’t usually have a signup bonus, but if one is available it will appear here:

Spend

The best way to earn Citi Double Cash rewards is through credit card spend.  Technically, this card earns 1% when you make a purchase and 1% when you pay your credit card bill.  I find it simpler to say that this card earns 2% cash back.  And, since rewards can be converted to ThankYou points, 2% cash back is identical to 2X ThankYou points on all spend.

The Citi Double Cash card is particularly good for “non bonus” spend.  For example, some cards earn bonuses at restaurants, some at grocery stores, some at gas stations, etc.  The Double Cash is one of the most rewarding cards for all other (not bonused) spend.

Increase Spend

Our Manufactured Spending Complete Guide lists many ways to increase credit card spend to earn more rewards.  Here are a few examples that are particularly rewarding with the Double Cash card:

  • Pay bills with Plastiq: Plastiq charges 2.85% to pay most bills by credit card. Paying with the Double Cash card is therefore like buying ThankYou points for 1.425 cents per point.  That’s an OK deal if you plan to transfer those points to airline miles to book high value awards.
  • Pay federal taxes: You can pay your estimated federal taxes by credit card for as low as 1.87% in fees.  This is a way to buy ThankYou points for less than a penny each!
  • Buy Visa gift cards at Simon Mall: The Double Cash card is one of the most rewarding options for these purchases.

Citi Double Cash Redeem Rewards

Cash Back

By default, the Double Cash card earns cash back, not ThankYou points.  You can withdraw the cash back as a statement credit, direct deposit, or a check by mail.

Convert to ThankYou Points

Every Double Cash card has an citi premier card cash back ThankYou Rewards account. Unlike other ThankYou Rewards cards, the Double Cash doesn’t earn ThankYou points automatically.  You must convert your cash back to points to add points to your ThankYou account.

You can convert your earned Cash Rewards to ThankYou points at a one to one ratio.  One penny = one point.  Conversions must be a minimum of $1, but can be odd amounts after that.  For example, you can convert $1.01 to 101 ThankYou points.

Redeem for Purchased Travel

There are a few ways to get better than 1 cent per point value when redeeming ThankYou points for travel: Redeem for 1.25 cents value with the Citi Premier Card (through April 10, 2021); Or book a 4th Night Free award with the Citi Prestige Card.

You can get these benefits with points from the Double Cash card in a couple of ways:

  1. Combine ThankYou accounts: Combine your Double Cash ThankYou account with your Premier or Prestige ThankYou account. Or:
  2. Convert your Double Cash walmart synchrony bank contact number to ThankYou points and then share your ThankYou points with the ThankYou account that has the Premier or Prestige card.

Redeem points for travel: 20% point discount (1.25 cents per point value)

This option requires the Citi Premier Card.  Book travel through the ThankYou Rewards portal for 20% fewer points than with other cards (this results in 1.25 cents per point value).  For example, a $500 flight would usually cost 50,000 points, but with the Citi Premier Card it would cost only 40,000 points.

You can book airfare, hotels, cruises, and car rentals in this way. Airfare purchased this way still earns airline miles and elite qualifying miles.  Hotels booked this way do not earn hotel rewards.  Worse, hotels booked this way often won’t offer you elite benefits even if you have status.  Also, be sure to compare hotel prices booked through Citi with prices posted elsewhere.  Citi often has far worse pricing.

Note that this feature is available only through April 10, 2021.  See this post for details.

Redeem points for a 4 night hotel stay: 25% point discount pre-tax (up to 1.33 cents per point value)

This option requires the Citi Prestige Card.  Book a 4 Night hotel stay for the price of 3 nights (not counting taxes & fees, the 25% discount results in 1.33 cents per point value).   Hotels booked through the ThankYou portal do not earn hotel rewards.  Worse, hotels booked through the portal often won’t offer you elite benefits even if you have status.  Also, be sure to compare hotel prices booked through Citi with prices posted elsewhere.  Citi often has far worse pricing.

Be sure to compare hotel prices booked through Citi with prices posted elsewhere.  Citi often has far worse pricing.

Transfer Points to Airline Miles

The best use of ThankYou points, in my opinion, is to transfer points to airline partners in order to book high value awards.  One example is the ability to book United flights to Hawaii for only 7,500 points each.  Please check out our post which covers the best awards that can be booked with Citi ThankYou points:

>>>>>  Citi ThankYou points sweet spots <<<<<

It is usually best to wait until you find a great flight award before transferring points.  One exception: Citi often offers 25% or 30% transfer bonuses to certain programs (Air France Flying Blue and Avianca LifeMiles are two recent examples).  If you’re confident that you’ll use the points for good value, it may make sense to transfer points when those bonuses are in effect.

Transfer Partners

Rewards ProgramBest Uses
AeroMexico ClubPremierAeroMexico is a SkyTeam partner. Club Premier points can be used to book flights on AeroMexico, SkyTeam alliance members (such as Delta or Korean Air), or on select partner airlines. Unfortunately many have reported that awards how to get routing and account number extremely difficult to book through AeroMexico so we do not recommend transferring points to this program. If you want to fly AeroMexico, look to transfer points to another SkyTeam partner (such as Air France) and then book AeroMexico with that program.
Air France KLM Flying BlueMonthly Air France Promo Awards often represent very good value. Air France miles can be used to book Sky Team awards, including Delta awards.
Avianca LifeMilesAvianca LifeMiles can be great for Star Alliance awards. They offer reasonable award prices and no fuel surcharges on awards. They also offer shorthaul awards within the US (for flying United, for example) for as few as 7,500 miles one-way. Best of all, their mixed-cabin pricing can lead to fantastic first-class award prices. See this post for details.
Cathay Pacific Asia MilesCathay Pacific has a decent distance based award chart, but they no longer allow stopovers longer than 24 hours. Cathay Pacific Asia Miles can be a good option for booking American Airlines flights with a distance based award chart, especially if other OneWorld Alliance miles aren't available. For long distance flights, it is possible to reduce the cost of first class by adding on a business class flight. See this post for details.
ChoiceChoice Privileges points seem to be randomly valuable within the US, but dependably valuable internationally in expensive locations such as Scandinavia and Japan
Emirates SkywardsThe best use of Emirates miles is to fly Emirates itself. See: Emirates Sweet Spot Awards - First class from 30K miles round trip.
Etihad GuestEtihad has a very competitive award chart for American Airlines flights, among others.  For example, they charge only 50,000 miles one-way for business class flights from North America to Europe. Partner awards must be booked over the phone.
EVA Air Infinity MileageLandsIf you want to fly one of the best business class products in the sky, the best way to snag EVA flights is with their own miles since they release more award space to their own members. One-way business class flights from the US to Taipei cost 75K to 80K miles. Fuel surcharges are very low on these routes.
Jet Airways Inter MilesJetAirways JetPrivilege miles are useful only for a few very specific cases such as certain flights to Hawaii for as low as 15K (30K business) one-way, or to the Caribbean or Central America for as low as 10K (20K business) one-way. Details can be found here.
JetBlueJetBlue points offer the most value when cheap ticket prices are available and when award taxes are high relative to the overall cost of the ticket (more details can be found here). The JetBlue Plus Card and the JetBlue Business Card offer citi premier card cash back 10% rebate on awards, so you can get more value by holding one of these cards.
Malaysia EnrichGiven Malaysia's award chart devaluation in June 2017, I'm not aware of any good uses for these miles.
Qantas Frequent FlyerBest use is probably for flights on El Al with no fuel surcharges. Also useful for short AA flights. Qantas offers distance based award charts similar to Cathay Pacific. tdb india Both are OneWorld Alliance members. I recommend comparing award prices across both programs before transferring to either. Qantas offers round the world business class awards for only 280,000 points (but with many restrictions)
Qatar Privilege ClubQatar has reasonable award prices for flying Qatar itself, but abysmal prices for flying partners.
Shop Your Way RewardsDon't do it. Shop Your Way points can be redeemed for a variety td bank careers gift cards. That said, unless Shop Your Way starts offering discounted gift cards, there's no point in converting transferrable points to Shop Your Way.
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyerUse to book Singapore Airlines First Class awards (generally reserved for their own members), Alaska Airlines economy awards, or for Star Alliance awards (including United Airlines).
Thai Airways International Royal Orchid PlusI'm not aware of any good uses for these miles
Turkish Airlines Miles & SmilesMiles & Smiles offers a number of awesome sweet-spot awards including 7.5K one-way anywhere within the US, even to Hawaii. Many awards cannot be booked online but can be booked via email. See: Turkish Miles & Smiles Complete Guide and Turkish business class sweet spots from the US.
Virgin Atlantic Flying ClubVirgin Atlantic offers quite a few sweet spot awards including ANA first class between the US and Japan for as low as 110K points round-trip; and US to Europe on Delta One business class for only 50K points keybank business phone number. See: Best uses for Virgin Atlantic points (Sweet Spot Spotlight).
WyndhamWyndham often allows booking multi-room suites for the same price as a standard room. It's sometimes possible to get great value from points in that way. Additionally, you can book vacation rentals for only 15K points per room per night.

The Rewards+ Rebate

One way to make your rewards go farther is to get a Rewards+ card and combine it with your other accounts.  The Rewards+ card offers a 10% rebate on redeemed points, up to 10,000 points rebated per year.  By combining the Rewards+ ThankYou account with your Premier or Prestige ThankYou account, for example, you’ll get that rebate when you convert points to airline miles or when you book travel.  See this post for more: Citi Rewards+ is a great companion to Premier or Prestige.

This is also a great option to combine with the Double Cash card. By picking up a Rewards+ card and combining ThankYou accounts between the two cards, you can take advantage of the Rewards+ card’s 10% points rebate each year (on up to 100,000 redeemed points).  Let’s say you spend $25,000 on the Double Cash card and therefore earn $500 in rewards.  You can then convert those rewards to ThankYou points and redeem $500 in points for $600 worth of gift cards.  You’ll then get $50 in ThankYou points back (thanks to the Rewards+ card) which you can then use to get $60 worth of gift cards.  You’ll then citi premier card cash back $6 in ThankYou points back.  So, for a total cost of $494 worth of ThankYou points, you’ll get $660 worth of gift cards.  In total, your $25,000 spend results in $660 in gift cards plus $6 in ThankYou chase bank security breach 2015 That’s a return of 2.66% on your spend!

Manage Rewards

Combine Rewards Across Cards

If you are the primary account holder with multiple credit cards that earn ThankYou Rewards, you can combine ThankYou Rewards accounts.  When your points are combined, they can then automatically be redeemed at the same value as your best card.  For example, if one of your cards is the Premier card, and you have combined ThankYou accounts, then you’ll get a 20% point discount on travel booked with points even if the points were earned on your Double Cash card.  Combining your Double Cash ThankYou account with the Premier or Prestige card also gives you the ability to transfer points to airline miles.

There are disadvantages to combining points:

  • You lose the ability to pick and choose which points are used when you redeem awards.
  • You lose visibility into how many points remain with each card.

Overall, I think that these disadvantages are minor.  The advantages of combining your Double Cash ThankYou account with your Premier or Prestige ThankYou account greatly outweigh to disadvantages.

Share Rewards Across Cardholders

If you don’t have a premium ThankYou card or you don’t want to combine it with your Double Cash ThankYou account, then you can opt to “share points” instead.

Citi allows people to transfer ThankYou points to anyone else, for free.  The “anyone else” includes yourself if your accounts aren’t combined.  There are two catches to this:

  1. Shared points expire after 90 days. Make sure you have a specific near-term use in mind before transferring points.
  2. 100K limit: Each member may share up to 100,000 points per calendar year.  Each member may receive up to 100,000 points per calendar year.

Why this is valuable:

  • A friend or family member with a Premier card can book travel for you in order to get the 20% point discount.
  • If a friend has airline elite status with one of Citi’s transfer partners with which you want to book an award, you may be better off transferring points to your friend who can then transfer the points to the airline partner and book the award for you (to get free award changes, for example).
  • If you haven’t combined accounts, you can still citi premier card cash back points from your Double Cash card effectively by sharing them with your Premier or Prestige account before redeeming the points.
