Debit cards are used across the country. In July 2019, there were 97.3 million debit cards and 61.9 million credit cards issued in the UK. This means people were 57 percent more likely to own a debit card. Usually, cards expire every two to five years depending on your bank or card provider.

A bizarre story concerning a man who was sent 64 replacement debit cards from his bank hit the news this month.

The man, known as Peter, was bewildered after his bank continued to send several cards to his home.

On Reddit, he wrote: “Back in December, I started receiving replacement debit cards.

“They'd show up one or two at a time every few days.”

When does your card expire?

All debit cards will have an expiry date on them.

Normally the date will be written with the month and date such as 03/21.

Taking the above example into account, this would mean your card will expire on March 31, 2021.

The expiry date outlines the final month your card is active and therefore your card will officially expire on the last day of that month.

But if your debit card is due to expire, what should you do?

Typically banks will automatically send out new cards before your debit card expires.

Different banks will have different timelines outlining when they typically send out new cards.

If you do not receive a card ahead of the expiry date, you should contact your bank to request a new card.

When does each bank typically send out replacement cards?

  • Barclays: Around a month before your card expires
  • HSBC: Usually one to two months before your card expires
  • Monzo: Eight to 11 weeks before your card expires
  • Lloyds: Around a week before your card expires
  • Natwest: At least one week before your card expires
  • Nationwide: At least one week before your card expires
  • Santander: Approximately 60 days before your card expires

What do you need to do when you receive your new card?

Before using a new card you may need to activate it.

Not all cards require activation, but many do.

When your card is sent to you, you should be told if you need to activate it or not.

There are three ways you can do this: calling the automated card number, activating it through the bank or through transactions.

Your card will likely include a sticker on top of it which will detail a number you can call to activate it.

Many banks will also allow you to activate it over the phone or via your online banking platforms.

You may also be able to activate your card by using it, but only if you insert your PIN number when paying for an item.

After you have activated your card, you should be able to use contactless payment if your card permits.

Massive change for millions of Visa debit card holders due to war on fees – what you need to know

MILLIONS of people have had their Visa debit cards replaced by Mastercards amid an industry war against the payment giant.

Customers of Santander and First Direct have been sent replacement Mastercard debit cards to use with their current account, and NatWest is soon to follow.

Banks have denied their decision is linked to fees charged by Visa and said it was to improve customer experience.

But the change has left customers disgruntled due to their new cards failing at the checkouts. 

One angry user said: "You need to get this sorted, you've changed all my cards over to MASTERCARD, guess what happens when there's an issue with Mastercard?!

"Had to walk out a shop earlier after replacement debit card santander uk having the service, luckily they knew me. still need to pay them though."

Another fumed: “Sort it out @santanderuk since you changed from Visa to Mastercard, it’s been nothing but issues.

On October 21, Santander tweeted: "We're aware that some customers continue to experience issues with our card payments.

Customer Milly Fawcett complained: "Ever since @firstdirect changed over to @Mastercard I’ve had no end of problems with my cards! 

“On the phone AGAIN to resolve randomly declined payments. + lots of #retail apps not fully supporting MasterCard security checks. This call is 18mins and counting! #BringBackVisa @Visa”

NatWest customers have been notified that they will have their expiring Visa debit cards changed to Mastercard ones over from December.

Some have speculated whether the decision to switch away from Visa cards is linked to the firm’s ongoing row with Amazon, in which Amazon said it will no longer accept Visa credit cards from January due to  high transaction fees. 

Visa debit cards will still be accepted on the site.

But banks say the decision was not recent, although some customers are only now just receiving their new Mastercards.

It comes as Amazon announced it would not accept Visa credit card payments from January.

Salim Secretary, of NatWest Group, said: “For the last year we have been extensively considering how we develop more tailored payment options for our customers. 

"Earlier this year we announced we are extending our existing relationship with Mastercard beyond credit cards and into debit payments.

"We believe this partnership will enable us to offer more tailored payment options to our customers however they wish to pay – whether in store, online or via mobile devices.”

Santander said: "We regularly review our third-party providers, and the decision to switch from Visa to MasterCard was based on a wide range of factors.

"In October a small number of customers experienced issues when making a payment. This was related to our own internal systems and not to do with MasterCard, and we are sorry for the inconvenience this caused."

Reporting a lost, stolen or damaged card

If you think you’ve temporarily misplaced your Mastercard, you can freeze and unfreeze it in the mobile app instead of cancelling it right away. 

As soon as you realise that your card is lost or stolen, report it to us. We’ll immediately cancel that card and send a replacement to you in the post.

When will my new card arrive? 

You’ll get your replacement card in 4-5 working days.

You won’t need a new PIN unless you ask for one when you report your card as lost or stolen. Otherwise, you can view your PIN in the mobile app.

If you do request a new PIN, it’ll arrive in a separate letter in 4-5 working days.

How can I continue using my account?

If you lose your card, you can still pay for things using mobile payments while you wait for your new card.

Freeze and manage are only available to Mastercard card holders. If you have a Visa debit card, we'll send you a debit Mastercard once your existing card expires.  

Will my digital wallets still work if I’ve ordered a replacement card?

If your card is set up for mobile payments, your replacement card will automatically be ready to use. If you've lost a Visa card and it's being replaced by a new debit Mastercard, you'll need to add this new card into the digital wallet.

Will I need a new PIN? 

When you report your card as lost, stolen or damaged in our mobile app, you can keep your old PIN. Or, if you think your PIN's been compromised, you can ask us for a new one.

It’s surprisingly common for an ATM to swallow your card, but do you know what to do if the cash machine refuses to return your bank card?

Have you ever put your debit card into an ATM, seeking to withdraw cash, only to find it's been swallowed?

Whether it’s a replacement debit card santander uk with the machine itself, or your bank, or your account, there are many reasons why a cash machine may decide to keep hold of your card.

If this happens to you, here's what you should do.

Wait for a few minutes

If it is a problem with the machine, then it may well spit your card back out eventually, particularly if it reboots.

So, the first thing to do is wait by the machine for 10-15 minutes to see if it spits your card back out.

You could also use this time to check for signs that the ATM may have been tampered with by criminals. If this is the case, you should alert the police and your bank immediately.

If not, and the machine is attached to a bank, and you have someone with you, one of you could go in and ask them to check if there is a problem with the machine, while the other waits in case the card reappears.

Take notes

After 15 minutes, if the machine hasn’t spat your card back out, it’s time to start taking notes.

Barclays allows customers to withdraw cash using an Android smartphone if they have registered.

You can also normally withdraw money in-branch without a debit card, as long as you have a valid form of ID, such as your passport.

Why was it swallowed?

Cash machines swallow cards for a number of reasons:

  • Incorrect PIN: If you enter the wrong PIN repeatedly, an ATM may hold on to your card;
  • Chip and PIN problems: If the chip on your card is damaged, an ATM might swallow your card;
  • Suspicious transactions: In some cases, your bank may be worried about suspicious activity on your card, causing the ATM to keep hold of your card;
  • ATM error: There may be no problem with your bank account or card, but it could be that the cash machine has suffered a glitch;
  • Lebanese Loop: This is a scam where criminals place a thin strip into the card slot on a cash machine that stops your card reappearing.

The Lebanese Loop is when insert your card and enter your PIN while the scammer watches to get your PIN. When your card doesn’t reappear, you'll probably think it has been swallowed.

After you walk away, the criminals fish your card out and may go on a spending spree.

This is why it is important you call your bank and report the problem straight away to ensure your card is cancelled before the criminal manages to get hold of it.
