If you Register your Card within 30 days of the purchase date, the $4.95 purchase fee will automatically be applied to the Card Travel Wallet (only valid for Cards purchased on or after May 4, 2018). The $4.95 can be used to pay for an individual ride or toward the future purchase of a Weekly, Monthly, or One Day Convenience Pass. This reimbursement will be limited to two cards per customer account.

Protect Your Card & SEPTA Fare

How do I Register my new Key Card?

Register Online

  • Create an account by going to www.septakey.org and clicking on "create an account" in the blue box at the top left side of the homepage.
  • This takes you to the Account Registration page. Fill in the field with your information and follow the prompts to complete the process.
  • Once you are finished with Account Registration, you will receive an email to Confirm Registration. Click the link in the e-mail and you'll be ready to go.
  • Return to www.septakey.org and enter your username and password in the blue log-in box. Hit enter.
  • On the next screen, there will be a red icon on the left that says Register Key Card. Click on the link and include your 16-digit Key Card number when it asks for "Key Card." You also need to create a PIN for your card.
  • Once you've entered all the information to register your Key Card, click submit - and your Key Card registration is complete. You can now use the Key website to load/reload fares, set up an auto-load account, review your trip history, or report a lost or stolen Card.

Contact the Key Call Center

  • You can also register your Card by phone by calling the Key Customer Call Center at 855-567-3782 (this is not SEPTA Customer Service).

What do I do if my Key Card is lost or stolen?

Report a lost or stolen Registered Key Card either by calling the Key Customer Call Center at 855-567-3782 or going online to septakey.org. The funds in your Travel Wallet and your current Pass will be temporarily suspended from use until you get a replacement Card when you make this report so it's important to do it right away - and don't forget to Register your replacement Card as well.

Can I share my SEPTA Key Card with a friend or family member?

The SEPTA Key Card is intended to be used by just one person, which is why we encourage everyone to register their Card as soon as they buy it and load a fare.

Same SEPTA Fare Options - New Ways to Purchase

If the SEPTA Key Card is new, does this mean SEPTA fare options are also changing?

No. The SEPTA Key Card provides the same fare payment options and discounts that have been offered on our legacy system - Weekly/Monthly/One Day Passes as well as Transfers. Instead of each fare being an individual product, you can load or reload more than one product all on one Card. This flexibility lets you customize your SEPTA fare to match your travel needs. If you usually purchase a Monthly Pass but have plans for an extended vacation or business trip during the upcoming month, you can easily change your SEPTA Key Card into a Weekly Pass or add money to the Travel Wallet to cover the days you know you'll be traveling; when you return you can easily go back to buying a Monthly Pass.

Right now the following are the only fares available on a Key Card: Weekly TransPass, Monthly TransPass, One Day Convenience Pass, Travel Wallet. For fare details, see the Key Fare Product page. Check back for more details on SEPTA Key Regional Rail fares.

Can I buy a SEPTA Key Card and purchase a fare if I don't have a bank account or credit card?

Absolutely. Cash is accepted at SEPTA Key Fare Kiosks, SEPTA Sales Offices, and external retailers for the purchase of a Key Card or the purchase of a SEPTA fare product.

Can I tap my smart phone at the Validator to pay for my ride?

It's in the plan that the Validator will accept an NFC enabled smart phone to pay for your ride - but not right now. When it is available, the fare for a single ride will be like paying cash, which offers no discount. NFC enabled smart phones can be used now at Fare Kiosks to purchase a Key Card and load/reload a fare - Pass or funds in the Travel Wallet - and these products do offer a discounted ride.

If I already have a Bank issued contactless chip Debit or Credit Card can I tap it at the Validator to pay for a SEPTA ride?

Right now, the answer is the same as using a smart phone. It's in the plan for the Validator to accept other contactless chip bank cards to pay a fare - but it's not available right now. But you can use that Card to buy a Key Card and load/reload a fare - Pass or funds in the Travel Wallet.

How will Commuter Benefits Program like Wage Works or RideECO work with SEPTA Key?

If you receive your commuter benefit in paper checks, you can purchase a SEPTA Key Card and your Pass/Travel Wallet by going to a SEPTA Sales Office. If you receive your commuter benefit on a debit card, you can use this card at a Fare Kiosk, SEPTA Sales Office, or external sales location to pay for your fare. If your employer or third-party Transportation Administrator manages your company's commuter benefit program, these transactions will be completed through the Partner Program portal on the SEPTA Key e-commerce website. We're not ready to launch this feature so please check back for updates.

Can I buy a One Day or Family Independence Pass on my Key Card?

The One Day Individual Pass is now available to purchase and load on your Key Card. The SEPTA Key Team is working to design the capability to have a Family Independence Pass as part of the rollout of the program on Regional Rail. More information will be available later.

Will the SEPTA Key Card be valid for use on PATCO?

SEPTA and PATCO have been working on the reciprocal plan that will enable PATCO customers to use the new Freedom Card to ride SEPTA. PATCO recently announced they are looking for a select number of riders to test their new Card starting in August 2018. We will keep you posted on the details.

Will PATCO FREEDOM Cards be valid for use on SEPTA?

PATCO has created a new card called the FREEDOM SHARE Card that can be used on SEPTA Transit as well as PATCO services. The cards are not valid for use on Regional Rail but can be tapped at the Validator to pay for trips on all other SEPTA routes. Please note that the cost of each trip on SEPTA using the FREEDOM SHARE Card, including transfers, is $2.00-PATCO customers who frequently transfer between SEPTA routes can purchase a Key Card and pay for their travel using Travel Wallet funds. The Key Card is the only option that offers the $1.00 transfer fare when tapping for a valid transfer. The new Freedom Share Card replaces the paper SEPTA/PATCO Ticket, which is being discontinued effective Monday, October 1, 2018.

What is a Transit Quick Trip?

A Quick Trip is the same as paying cash for a single-ride fare for one person (no transfers). All Quick Trips must be swiped at the turnstile. On Transit, it's currently only available for use on the Market Frankford and Broad Street Lines (not good for use on buses at any time). You may have noticed that the turnstiles no longer accept coins (cash or Tokens) so a Quick Trip must be purchased at a Market Frankford or Broad Street Line Fare Kiosks; it will also be available at select City Trolley Stations and at 69th Street and Norristown Transportation Centers when the turnstile farelines go into operation at these locations.

A Quick Trip is only valid for use the same service day as it is purchased but it can be used at any Market Frankford and Broad Street Station so you can purchase 2 Quick Trips for round trip travel - but you don't receive any discounted fare.

What if I don't want to buy a Key Card - How will the SEPTA Key program work for me?

You don't have to buy the card - we will continue to accept cash to ride the system - but you will always be paying the highest fare.

I'm an occasional rider - is there any benefit to getting a Key Card?

Yes, definitely. A Key Card is valid for 3 years and you have the option of putting money in the Travel Wallet so that you can pay your fare and receive a discount for travel - when you need to ride. There are no fees or deductions for money unused in the Travel Wallet and if your Registered Card expires before you've used all the Travel Wallet funds you can transfer your balance to a new Card.

Will the store or supermarket I currently visit to buy a SEPTA fare also sell the new SEPTA Key Cards?

As we phase out the sale of our legacy fare products, many of current external sales locations will be joining the network of new retailers selling SEPTA Key Cards and reloading SEPTA fares. Click this link - www.septa.org/key/external-retailers.html - to find an External SEPTA Key Card retailer.

Travel Wallet/Tokens

What is a Travel Wallet - is this a new SEPTA fare?

Not exactly a new fare - it's a new, convenient way to travel on Transit at the Token ($2.00) and/or Transfer ($1.00) price. With Key you can put money in the Card Travel Wallet and pay for a ride on bus, trolley, trackless trolley, Broad Street/Market Frankford/Norristown High Speed Lines - whenever you are ready to travel:

  • a single ride
  • a single ride and a transfer/re-transfer

You will receive the same discounted fare as a Token and Paper Transfer without the added hassle - all you need to do is tap when you board the first vehicle and tap again when you board the other vehicle(s) for your connecting trip(s). To qualify for the Transfer rate, the connecting trip (s) must begin within 90 minutes of the time you tapped to begin your trip. Remember, only valid transfers get the discount. Otherwise, you'll pay the full discounted fare for the second or third trip.

Starting August 1, 2018 the ONLY way you will be able to get the $1.00 transfer fare is if you have a Key Card with Travel Wallet funds, so now is a great time to move to the future of fare payment.

The minimum amount you can load on the Travel Wallet is $5.00* up to a maximum of $250.00. (*If you are using the online auto-load feature for your Travel Wallet, the first time you set up your account the minimum load is $10.00 - and $5.00 increments thereafter.)

When the Travel Wallet feature for Regional Rail is introduced you will be able to use the Travel Wallet feature to pay for a single ride (the equivalent price of purchasing a 10 strip of Tickets, which will offer the lowest price for a single ride) or for parking at a SEPTA station.

Where can I load a SEPTA Pass or put money in the Travel Wallet of my Key Card?

The SEPTA Key program offers a range of options to reload a SEPTA fare:

  • All SEPTA Transit Sales Offices
  • Center City Regional Rail Sales Offices
  • 1234 Market Street Lobby Fare Kiosks
  • Fare Kiosks at all Broad Street and Market Frankford Line Stations
  • Select Bus Loop Fare Kiosks
  • Online at SEPTAKey.org
  • SEPTA Key Customer Call Center (1.855.567.3782)
  • External (non-SEPTA) Retailers

If you select the online or Call Center option you can set up an auto-load account and your SEPTA fare will be reloaded automatically without having to wait in line.

What do I do with the Tokens I already have?

Tokens will still be accepted to pay for a single ride on any Transit vehicle with a farebox (buses, trolleys) or you can use a Token at a Fare Kiosk to buy a Quick Trip for a single ride on the Market Frankford, Broad Street, or Norristown High Speed Lines. If you are a customer who uses Tokens and Paper Transfers - paper Transfers are no longer sold by Operators or Cashiers and the only way to get the $1.00 transfer rate is if you have a Key Card with money in a Travel Wallet. So this is a good time use one of the Fare Kiosks to turn your old Tokens into Travel Wallet value on a new SEPTA Key Card and continue to enjoy the same discounted fare without the hassle of coins and paper.

Passes

What do I do if I exceed the ride limit of the Pass on my Key Card?

While most customers find they can take the number of rides they need without ever getting close to these limits, we know this is not the case for everyone. The best option in these instances is to also add funds to the Travel Wallet, so that you can continue to receive a discounted fare even after the rides on your Pass have been exhausted.

Regional Rail

What do I do with the Regional Rail Tickets I already have?

Tickets will continue to be sold and accepted during the roll out of Key on Regional Rail. We will announce when Tickets will no longer be sold or accepted.

What is a Regional Rail Quick Trip?

Regional Rail Quick Trips are now available for sale at Fare Kiosks located at all Center City Regional Rail Stations and from the Fare Kiosks at the Philadelphia International Airport Terminal platforms.
  • From Center City Stations: Purchase at Station Fare Kiosk for travel from Center City to an outlying Station. Not valid for travel from an outlying station for travel towards Center City except on Airport Line
  • From Airport Line Stations Terminal A-E/F: Purchase at Terminal platform Fare Kiosks for travel towards Center City or a Regional Rail Station beyond Center City
A Quick Trip is a single ride (no reloads) for one person, which can be purchased for all Zone fares - same fare as paying cash. Regional Rail Quick Trips are valid ONLY for travel on the date of purchase. Fare Kiosks accept cash and credit/debit cards for purchase.

Regional Rail Quick Trips purchased from a Fare Kiosk are swiped through the turnstile reader to access the train platform at the five Center City Stations. PLEASE REMEMBER TO KEEP YOUR QUICK TRIP TO SHOW TO THE CONDUCTOR AS PROOF OF FARE PURCHASE.

Regional Rail Quick Trips are not valid for travel on Transit and Transit Quick Trips are not valid for travel on Regional Rail.

Take a Tour of Your Key Card

Why is there a Mastercard logo on the front of the SEPTA Key Card?

The Key program offers customers several options on how to use the Card. You can use it exclusively to ride by putting money in the Travel Wallet or buying a Pass - then it's only a SEPTA Travel Card.

The Card can also be used it to pay for coffee, groceries, shoes, and other items, anywhere a Mastercard debit card is accepted. To use the Mastercard debit functionality, you must load value to the Mastercard debit wallet (this is different from the Travel Wallet). There are fees associated with Mastercard debit use and there is a separate registration process to protect your Mastercard debit funds. Contact the Key Customer Call Center at 855-567-3782 for more details.

If you have money in the Mastercard debit Wallet you can use it to add funds to your Travel Wallet or purchase a SEPTA fare for your Key Card. You can't transfer money from your Travel Wallet to the Mastercard debit wallet and your Travel Wallet money can't be used to pay for things like coffee or groceries. If you only have money in the Mastercard debit Wallet, you'll still be able to pay for a trip on SEPTA - it just won't be a discounted fare.

I see an expiration date on my Key Card what does that mean? Your SEPTA Key is valid for up to 3 years from the date of purchase, as indicated by the expiration date on the front of the Card. During that time, you can load/reload your SEPTA fares to the same Card - making Key convenient and sustainable.

What will happen to the SEPTA fare on my card - Pass or Travel Wallet - when it expires?

Once the Card reaches the end of the month of the expiration date printed on the front you cannot reload any new SEPTA products and you will need to purchase a new Key Card. Learn more about what to do if your Card is getting ready to expire.

If you have a current Pass, you can continue to use the expired Card through the valid travel period (i.e. a May Monthly Pass can be used through the 31st of that month) and then you will start using your new Key Card. The expiration date will prevent you from purchasing a Pass product that is valid for use after your Card expires. You can continue to load funds to the Travel Wallet of your Card but please remember that you won't be able to use them after the Card expires.

To transfer the Travel Wallet funds from an expired Card to a new Card your Key Card must be registered. If your Card is already registered you will receive an email reminder that the Card is expiring. If your Card is not registered and it expires, you can contact the Key Customer Call Center at 855-567-3782 and request a refund for any Travel Wallet balance remaining on the card.

Can I punch a hole in my Key Card to put it on a lanyard?

No, if you punch a hole you will damage the chip and antenna embedded inside the plastic and the Card will not work. Unlike the old SEPTA Passes, the new Key Card doesn't have to make direct contact with the Validator to be read, so you can keep the Card in any non-blocking RFID case/wallet/sleeve. Tap the case with the Card inside and wait for the green check indicating your fare has been paid.

Most of the Key Cards look the same - will there be more than one type of Card?

The SEPTA Key program offers a single Card that can be purchased at Station Fare Kiosks, SEPTA Transit and Regional Rail Sales Offices, and External Sales locations. We have been asked if customers can get a Key Card made up with a personal photo or other graphics. Sorry, no, the branding and design of the SEPTA Key Cards cannot be customized. There are other SEPTA Key Cards for customers eligible to apply for a Senior Photo ID Card or the Reduced Transit Photo ID.

Reviewing My Key Card Account/Getting Help

How can I determine how much money is left in my Key Card Travel Wallet or how many rides I have left on Pass?

Customers can quickly check the balance on their Travel Wallet by tapping their Card at the card reader at all Fare Kiosks but that is the only thing that can be seen at the Fare Kiosk. Customers who Register their Cards have two options - they can go online to check Travel Wallet balances, the number of rides left on a current Pass, as well as review their trip history, or they can contact the SEPTA Key Customer Call Center to get an update on both the Travel Wallet funds or rides left on their current Pass.

What if I need help at the Fare Kiosk?

If you follow the screen prompts carefully, the Fare Kiosks are easy to use. But we know that it's going to take a little time to get fully used to this new system and equipment so we've made a number of short "how-to" videos on subjects like using the fare kiosk and registering your Card. We invite you to watch these videos for step by step instructions by visiting www.septa.org/key. Once the Cashiers make their transition to becoming Customer Attendants they will be out in the stations and ready to answer your questions.

How do the SEPTA Key information systems accommodate customers with visual or hearing impairments?

All of the Fare Kiosks have Braille and raised lettering labels, they have an audio function that converts the information on the screen to spoken instructions, and they have a jack for audio amplification equipment to support the completion of a transaction. Both the SEPTA Key information and ecommerce sites are ADA accessible; and customers can contact the Key Customer Call Center (855.567.3782) for assistance to register a Key Card, load/reload fares, check balances, or report a Register Card if it is lost or stolen.

How can those customers who may be non-English readers or speakers understand the SEPTA KEY system?

The Station Fare Kiosks have a language feature that automatically translates the screen text into Spanish, and both the SEPTA Key microsite (located on www.septa.org) and the SEPTA Key ecommerce site - www.septakey.org have tools that can translate the text into more than 100 languages.

It’s been three years since the first batch of SEPTA key cards was introduced and bought in 2016, and now they’re expiring.

On July 31, nearly 40,000 SEPTA key cards will be unusable, thanks to their three-year expiration date, according to BillyPenn. But, if you have money loaded on that 2016 card, you have some options.

Over 35,000 of those initially issued cards are funded through travel wallets, which essentially turn it into a transit-only debit card, with money loaded that you can spend at any SEPTA turnstile. If you have one of those cards you’ll have to buy a new one, but you can transfer over the money from your previous card to a new one by reaching the call center at 855-567-3782, according to Inquirer.com. The news site says the call centers are ready for the changeover as soon as today.

The three-year limit is not exclusive to first-time cardholders. Everyone who owns a SEPTA key card can expect to see an expiration date within three years of buying the card.

In a way, it’s a sort of milestone for the transit wells fargo essential business checking SEPTA, which has been slowly pushing travelers from the dated token system to the key card system over the past few years.

Tokens have been a staple of Philly transit boone county sheriff twitter 1968, but SEPTA switched over to key cards in 2016. Over the following years, the transit agency tried to push riders to use the new system, offering free key cards (at first), before bringing the price up to $4.95 a card last year. At the same time, they started to remove the token kiosks from various stations, phasing them out slowly over 2018.

And it seems lot model modular homes for sale riders took to the change: over 1.2 million key cards are now in use, reports Inquirer.com.

Yet, for all of the innovation that SEPTA has in pushing a card system, Philly is still behind some major metropolitan areas, like New York, which is slowly doing away with its Metrocard in favor of tap-to-pay system, where riders can merely tap bank cards or their mobile wallet app on their smart phones to pay for transit.

The transportation authority is tracking a small but disquieting number of card reader failures on buses little river regional park the beginning of the year. The readers seem to be working in the mornings, but by day's end, problems consistently appear. The issues aren't limited to any one route or geographic area. That month, there were failures on 0. SEPTA has no estimate yet of fare revenue lost because of card reader failures but said it is likely small. The transit agency has a theory about what's driving a lot of those failures, and it's linked to the popularity of Key cards.

Aboutcards are in circulation now, and every time one is used, the system macon bank and trust lafayette tn phone number it against a list of all the cards in use to confirm its validity. That's not really a problem in subway stations, but buses, always on the move, depend on a WiFi connection. About 3 percent of the time, a transaction happens in a dead zone. The buses' card readers should be capable of running that validation process when disconnected from the system, but they're getting bogged down searching the lengthy list, causing failures.

Get the news you need to start your day. The solution, SEPTA hopes, will be to have the system check transactions against cards that are known to be invalid — those that have been reported lost or stolen, officials said. It's a much shorter list and would be less taxing on the card reader when a bus is in a dead zone. The software improvement was to begin testing Friday and was expected to be rolled out across the system in a few weeks, he said.

While SEPTA has given no formal direction to bus drivers, people with Key cards that aren't being recognized are allowed to ride. The burdens placed on a system by wide usage can be hard to predict, he said. SEPTA is still learning about the quirks of its new system. SEPTA has also been dealing with user confusion involving the card dispensing kiosks. Kiosks with redesigned operating screens are in place at 10 locations along SEPTA's system, with more improvements planned.

Right now, the smart card works on every mode of travel except the Regional Rail, and an early adopters program is planned to begin for commuter rail in December.

However most people obviously put their access card into their wallet for convenience. The problem with this is that, in a wallet, when an access card inevitably comes into contact with credit cards, this may cause demagnetization or desensitization. We call this a demagnetized card. They are all currently in my wallet.

When I try to use them, they interfere with each other and the scanner does not read my card. This happens even when I take all three out, put them together and try to scan a card. When I scan the correct card alone, it works flawlessly.

Is there a way I can address this? There are speculations whether a smartphone can actually cause a demagnetized card. Based on the stories. As a workaround besides buying more expensive cards or readerspeople suggest to use aluminum foil and cover the card with that.

RFID interference is a common, but not the only way your access card can get demagnetized. If you recall some basic middle school physics, every magnet has a magnetic field created by electrons moving between the two poles. With a mag stripe card, this same principle applies when it comes into contact with other magnetized objects like credit and debit cards, key chains, etc A swipe card can get demagnetized even from something as simple as a fridge door magnet, provided you keep them close enough for a long time.

Magnets on wallets, jackets and purses are convenient as they do a great job closing a compartment and keeping it tightly sealed. A great place to keep your access cards safe, right? Not always. If the card is affected by the magnetic field of a magnetic zipper or button it can get demagnetized.

This scenario happens because people usually keep their stuff together in a bag or carry them td bank calgary near me their pockets. For the card to malfunction, it first national bank of omaha american express invitation to be in really close contact to such magnets, so, for the most part, they are safe in your bags. New clothing is a common but little-known culprit for ruining magstripe cards. We will be traveling to Philadelphia for spring break in March and we have decided that the Key Card Travel Wallet is probably our best option for transportation.

We have decided not to get the weekly Transpass because we will be in town Saturday-Tuesday. Based on what I have researched, we would not be able to use the pass Monday or Tuesday of our trip. Am I understanding this correctly? If we do get the Key Cards, would I be able to purchase them at the airport?

Then you can use it from the airport. Then add money either online or at all Subway stations. The airport is NOT a subway station; it is a commuter rail station. But they didn't want a pass, just a Key Card. Once they use the card to get into the city, they can get an 1-day City transit-only pass if that's want that; that's what I would do. Right now you cannot buy them online. Once you have one, you can set up a travel wallet for auto reload. So basically we should buy a train ticket to get into the city and buy our Key Pass from a kiosk once we get to a subway station?

I did a little more research tonight and that is what it was sounding like. Yes, but realize that if you are staying in the downtown area, you can walk to just about everything you will want to see or do, so you may not use the SEPTA Key. While some of those failures may have been the result of problems as simple as a rider not having enough money on a card to pay for a bus trip, SEPTA officials said, a significant number of the failures resulted from card readers freezing.

Once that happened, septa key card expiration date drivers were directed to board all Key-carrying passengers for free until the problem was fixed, which in some cases was not possible until after a bus finished its route. While determining an exact number is difficult, the problem has cost SEPTA at a time when transit ridership is shrinking. The agency will conduct a cost analysis and may attempt to recoup its lost revenue from Conduent, the company that installed and administers the Liberty bank savings account rates system, said Andrew Busch, a SEPTA spokesperson.

Conduent is a spin-off of Xerox, which began the Key project. Get the news you need to start your day. Failing to record all riders could also lead to issues with state funding, since ridership counts are one tool used to determine how much money SEPTA receives from Pennsylvania.

Card readers have frozen on SEPTA's subways and trolley systems, too, but the issue has not been as acute as on its buses, officials said.

The freezes happened most frequently between 7 and 10 a. The problem first cropped up in August, coinciding with a larger-than-usual software upgrade that included security fixes, and continued happening through early October. Another potential factor could have been that buses were turned off while receiving the new software. To find the exact cause, millions of lines of code are being sifted through, Busch said. A Temple University expert said such issues may be the new normal as SEPTA nears the completion of its transition from older fare systems to the digital fare card.

Whatever caused the problem, about 1. September was worse, with 2. As of Oct. It was almost exactly a year ago that a different problem with SEPTA Key caused card validators on buses to fail at a similar rate. The card failures aren't costing SEPTA a lot, officials say, since the majority of riders use one of the prepaid monthly or weekly fare plans.

But according to a recent ridership reportabout 21 percent of city transit riders, which includes subway and trolley users along with bus passengers, pay per ride with their Key card or tokens. The transit agency lost 18 million bus trips between and And that recent ridership report recorded July and August's revenue from surface modes of travel was lower than the budget projected.

Schuff noted that virtually all digital systems are now subject to frequent software upgrades and patches. SEPTA does them monthly, officials there said, and Schuff compared what is chime customer service 24 hours done to the Key system to a software update for a smartphone.

Sometimes, the new software can create glitches. Skip to content. Related stories. The agency is reviewing ridership data and may seek to recoup losses from the company administering the fare card system.

What is a Transit Quick Trip?

A Quick Trip is the same as paying cash for a single-ride fare for one person (no transfers). All Quick Trips must be swiped at the turnstile. On Transit, it's currently only available for use on the Market Septa key card expiration date and Broad Street Lines (not good for use on buses at any time).
