A travel money card can be a convenient tool for frequent travellers. Before travelling overseas, you load money into the travel money card account, locking in the exchange rate for foreign currencies at that time. 

You then use the card for purchases and cash withdrawals like a debit or credit card.

Travel money cards are best for longer trips, and are usually not worth your while if you're only taking a short trip (use your normal debit card instead).

We compared travel money cards on offer from the big banks and airlines.

We compared the exchange rates for the US dollar, New Zealand dollar, British pound and euro, offered greenwoods state bank lake mills the 10 travel money cards we tracked for 10 business days in August 2019. 

The Travelex Money Card offered a slightly better exchange rate over the 10-day test period.

If you had converted $5000 for the average rate offered by each card during the 10-day period, Travelex gave you the highest return:

  • USD = $3304 (lowest return from Australia Post = $3206)
  • GBP = £2710 (lowest return from Australia Post = £2617)
  • Euro = €2951 (lowest return from Australia Post = €2835)
  • Second highest for NZD = $5095 (highest return from ANZ = $5115, lowest return from Australia Post = $4961) 

Note: Australia Post is one of five cards (includes ANZ, 7-Eleven, Travel Money Oz and Qantas) that don't charge cross-currency fees. Travelex charges the highest cross-currency fee of all the cards we looked at.

Travel money card tips

  • Make sure the card allows all currencies you need. Some currencies such as the Chinese yuan, South African rand or Fijian dollar are only supported by a few cards.
  • Try to load your card with the right currencies and amounts on days with good exchange rates. 
  • Make sure you know how to reload if you run out of funds while overseas.
  • It may be more convenient to choose a card that has an app which can be linked to your bank account.
  • Avoid loading too much on the card as there may be high fees to get the excess money back.
  • Remember to cancel the card if it has inactivity fees.

The experience of CHOICE members with travel money cards is mostly positive.

  • Some don't charge an overseas ATM fee.

Cons

  • Some have purchase or closure fees
  • May charge ATM fees overseas 
  • Additional ATM and other transaction fees can be charged by local merchants or financial institutions
  • Nearly all charge ATM or closure fees to withdraw cash left over on the card after your holiday
  • Some have monthly inactivity fees, so you need to make sure you cancel them once you get back
  • About half charge a cross-currency fee if you need to convert money to another currency
  • Some only allow you to load amounts of $100 and more which can be a disadvantage at the end of your holiday
  • Some only allow you to load a selection of currencies they support at any one time.

When to use (and avoid) the Travelex Money Card for your travels

We think the Travelex Money Card is ideal for an organised traveller going to popular holiday destinations like Europe or the US. It comes with free Wifi, which fantastic for you to keep in touch with family or friends. Travelex has better online rates than your bank so you can lock in a good initial loading rate and save. Plus they don't charge you ATM fees while you're overseas.

Unfortunately all of these conveniences comes with a high price tag. If you're looking for cheaper travel money options, you can also try the Wise (formerly TransferWise) debit card or Revolut.

 

Best way to use the Travelex card

The travel money card contact us way to use this card is to take cash from ATMs, because your limit is $3,000 and there are no additional ATM fees. The limit for in-store purchases is only $350 per day, which isn't much.

We also think it's a good idea to get a spare card, kept securely and separately from your main card. This way if your card gets lost or stolen, you won't have the hassle of ordering and waiting for a new card.

Q. I have foreign currency and need to change it into Australian Dollars, what do I do?

Unfortunately, we have had to temporarily pause the purchase of all foreign cash, there are no exceptions to this while our stores are closed. Our stores will not reopen until after significant international travel has resumed.

Q. I have money on my Currency Pass that I want to transfer into my bank account, how do I do this?

To cash out, login to your Currency Pass account and click on ‘Cash out’ in the menu. If you are unable to complete the online cash out process or have lost your card, please call 1800 098 231, press 1 for English, then press 3 for Address changes and other features, then press 3 for Other enquiries, this will put you into a queue to speak with an agent where you can request a cash out. 

Q. How do I find out the balance remaining on my Currency Pass?

Log into your account, and the balance will be the first thing on the screen under the heading Your Currency Card. Alternatively, you can hear your balance over the phone. Call 1800 098 231.

Q. My family or friends have sent me money from overseas using MoneyGram, how can I pick this up?

MoneyGram is no longer available via Travel Money Oz as we have discontinued this service. MoneyGram continues to operate globally, please call MoneyGram on 1800 049 087 or visit their website. We cannot assist with any MoneyGram transactions.

Yes! If your current account is with another bank that’s part of the Current Account Switch Service, all you have to do is fill out a simple form and agree a switch date with us. It’ll only take seven working days to switch and is covered by the Current Account Switch Guarantee Link opens in a new window.

With the Current Account Switch Service everything will be done for you. That includes speaking to your old bank to request the switch and the closure of your old accounts. We'll keep you up to speed with how it's going at all times. It couldn't be any easier.

To switch a sole account at another bank to your existing sole Virgin Money current account or to transfer some payments over from that account without closing it, you can do this in the Virgin Money app, (Android app only at present but we’ll be offering the same facility to Apple device users soon!). Just open your Virgin Money app, select the current account you want to switch into, tap the “Switch to Virgin Money” tile near the top of the screen and follow the instructions. It should take you no more than a few minutes to submit your request.
