Amazon Shop with Points: Should you use your rewards on Amazon?

Amazon is increasingly becoming the favorite online shopping website for many American fifth third bank car loan customer service number. The pandemic has also played into this trend with consumers choosing to shop online for groceries and doing holiday shopping via their internet browser.

With the right credit card, these shoppers can earn rewards when shopping on Amazon – or redeem their rewards on Amazon purchases. But is it a good idea to spend your credit card rewards this way?

Read on to learn how shopping with points on Amazon works and whether it’s a good use of your points.

Amazon Shop with Points: Credit cards and rewards programs

How to shop with points on Amazon

To be able to use points for shopping on Amazon, you typically need to have an eligible credit card linked to your Amazon account. (Some issuers, however, may offer this feature at checkout without linking your card as long as you’ve used it on Amazon before.) Once your card is linked, you’ll be able to pay with points or cash back from your card.

You can pay the full amount if you have enough points or choose to pay for a portion of your purchase. In that case, Amazon may charge the remaining balance on the same card as opposed to your default payment method. However, you might be able to combine your points with your Amazon gift card balance.

The terms and restrictions for shopping with points vary from issuer to issuer. Let’s dig into how this feature works for different credit cards.

Which credit cards are eligible for Shop with Points?

Quite a few credit card issuers participate in Amazon Shop with Points, and each places a different value on this redemption option.

Amazon co-branded cards

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card and Amazon Store Card from Synchrony are among the best cards to use on Amazon.

With either of these cards, you can earn 5% cash back on Amazon and redeem them for Amazon purchases at a 1 cent-per-point rate, making shopping with points a convenient and valuable option for cardholders.

American Express

If you earn American Express Membership Rewards points on your eligible Amex card, you can redeem them toward Amazon purchases. All you have to do is link your American Express card that participates in the Membership Rewards program to your Amazon account and select Membership Rewards points during checkout.

Note, however, that the redemption value, in this case, is only 0.7 cents per point, making it a rather poor use of your points.

Additionally, you can’t use Shop with Points on some digital goods, Kindle downloads, Subscribe and Save items or Amazon Fresh purchases. The redemption option also doesn’t work with one-click purchases.

Capital One

With eligible Capital One credit cards, you can Shop with Points by redeeming your cash back or travel rewards, depending on the card. Add your card as a payment method and enroll in the Amazon Shop with Points program to start.

Eligible cards include:

Your cash back card won’t lose any value – $1 in Capital One cash back rewards is $1 in Amazon redemption value. But Capital One miles are only worth 0.8 cents per mile when redeemed on Amazon. Compared with travel redemptions, it’s a poor value, so we recommend saving your miles for travel purchases and transfers to partner airlines.

Chase

Similarly, you can use your Chase Ultimate Rewards points if you have one of the following Chase credit cards:

The point value is low – you’ll only get a 0.8-cent-per-point rate when redeeming for Amazon purchases. Chase Ultimate Rewards are some of the most valuable credit card rewards, and your points can be worth up to 1.5 cents per point when redeeming toward travel with certain cards. For that reason, spending your points on Amazon might not be the best idea.

See related: Why are Chase Ultimate Rewards points so valuable?

Citi

Citi credit cards that earn ThankYou points are eligible for the Shop with Points program. The value is also low: You’ll only get a 0.8-cent-per-point rate when redeeming your ThankYou points for Amazon purchases. Compare this to 1 cent per point for flights and transfers to airline partners.

There are certain restrictions to keep in mind, too. You can’t redeem ThankYou points on certain digital downloads such as music and movies, Kindle downloads, Subscribe and Save items, AmazonLocal items or AmazonFresh purchases. Additionally, the feature is not available for one-click purchases.

Discover

Similar to Capital One, Discover offers Shop with Points on both its cash back and travel cards, including Discover it® Cash Back, Discover it® Miles and Discover it® chrome.

Discover credit cards are known for their rather straightforward earning and redemption structures. That can be said about the Shop with Points option, too: you’ll get a 1-to-1 value when redeeming for Amazon purchases even if you use your miles. This is the same rate you’ll get for any Discover redemption options. This makes Discover cards the best choice for shopping with points, besides the Amazon co-branded cards.

Keep in mind, however, that you can’t use Shop with Points with your Discover card when purchasing certain digital goods, Kindle downloads, Subscribe and Save items or Amazon Fresh items, as well as when using the one-click purchase feature.

Hilton Honors

Hilton Honors points can be used to shop with points if you connect your membership account to your Amazon account. However, the value is extremely low at 0.2 cents per point – less than half of what you can get redeeming for a standard room.

There are also many restrictions. For example, you can’t use your points on certain purchases, including Kindle downloads, digital music, Amazon video titles, Amazon Appstore apps, Amazon Fresh items, Subscribe and Save items, Prime memberships (except for Prime gift memberships), pre-order items, textbook rentals, Amazon Allowance or to reload your gift card balance. You also can’t shop with points when you’re using the one-click purchase feature.

Should you use your rewards on Amazon?

The Shop with Points feature can be very convenient, but many rewards programs place a low redemption value on Amazon purchases. Before you spend your points at Amazon checkout, make sure it’s a good use of your rewards – or if they’d be better spent elsewhere.

No, Amazon Hasn’t Banned Your Visa Card

The brouhaha is over fees Amazon pays Visa for processing payment transactions in the United Kingdom. Amazon claims those fees are too high and says it will stop accepting Visa credit cards on Jan. 19, 2022.

But Americans just skimming headlines might miss the fact that this issue involves Amazon in the U.K., not in the United States. For now, anyway. There’s been no move by Amazon — at least publicly — to ban Visa cards as a payment method for U.S. shoppers.

Asked about how the dispute would affect U.S. customers, an Amazon spokesperson in the U.K. said by email: "We don’t have anything further to add, but to be clear, this action only applies to U.K.-issued Visa credit cards used on Amazon.co.uk."

But U.S. cardholders could face some fallout later

Still, Amazon is reportedly clashing with Visa on other fronts as it considers shifting its popular co-branded credit card from Visa to Mastercard, according to news reports from Bloomberg, Associated Press and Reuters. And that move would have ramifications in the U.S.

Anytime a credit card changes payment networks or issuers, it can cause headaches for cardholders caught in the middle. For instance:

  • Card add amazon credit card to chase account can change.
  • Old transaction histories and records can be lost.
  • Credit scores can drop for brief periods.
  • Account numbers may change, meaning autopay bills could be affected.

Amazon currently has multiple co-branded credit cards through various partners:

  • Its popular card for Amazon Prime customers is issued by Chase and runs on Visa.
  • Amazon co-branded cards for businesses are issued by American Express.
  • Amazon's "closed-loop" store cards, which can be used only at Amazon, are issued by Synchrony Bank.

Nerdy tip: Visa processes card payments, but it doesn't issue credit cards. A card with the "Visa" brand name on it runs on that payment network, but it is issued by a bank, not by Visa.

What Amazon claims

Visa and other payment networks like Mastercard act as middlemen between banks and merchants and get paid fees for that service. Those fees are the crux of the issue.

"The cost of accepting card payments continues to be an obstacle for businesses striving to provide the best prices for customers," said the Amazon spokesperson regarding the dispute in the U.K. "These costs should be going down over time with technological advancements, but instead they continue to stay high or even rise."

He added that the plan to stop accepting Visa in the U.K. citi card customer service credit cards only, not also debit cards.

"With the rapidly changing payments landscape around the world, we will continue innovating on behalf of customers to add and promote faster, cheaper, and more inclusive payment options to our stores across the globe," he said.

A Visa spokesperson noted by email add amazon credit card to chase account U.K. shoppers will still be able to use Visa cards through the holiday season.

"We are very disappointed that Amazon is threatening to restrict consumer choice in the future. When consumer choice is limited, nobody wins," she said. "We have a long-standing relationship with Amazon, and we continue to work toward a resolution, so our cardholders can use their preferred Visa credit cards at Amazon UK without Amazon-imposed restrictions come January 2022."

Disputes aren’t uncommon

High-profile conflicts between major retailers and card networks can have a big impact on consumers.

For example, warehouse club Costco decided several years ago that Visa cards were the only credit cards it would accept in its stores, ditching a long run with American Express.

And in 2018, L.A.-based Foods Co. — a division of The Kroger Co. — stopped accepting Visa credit cards in multiple stores, in a dispute over Visa's fees. The ban on Visa cards was eventually lifted in October 2019.

It's unclear whether the current clash is posturing by Amazon to gain leverage or whether a rift will grow between the giant retailer and Visa.

But for U.S. shoppers, for now, paying with a Visa credit card at Amazon shouldn’t be a problem.

To learn how, visit the “Manage Payment Options” page via “Your Account” page at Amazon.com. Your card account will no longer earn 5% back and will earn 3% back instead, if the Amazon.com account from which you applied for your card account or the Amazon.com account you confirmed and selected to earn 5% back: (i) no longer has an eligible Prime membership; (ii) no longer has your card account loaded in that Amazon.com account; (iii) is closed; (iv) is used to select a different card account to earn 5% back at Amazon.com; or (v) is used to apply for another Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature card account that is approved and loaded in that Amazon.com account (that new card account will earn 5% back at Amazon.com). Whether a purchase earns 3% back or 5% back is determined at the time your eligible Amazon.com or Whole Foods Market purchase is made.

Earning % Back Rewards: You’ll earn either 5% back or 3% back for each $1 of eligible purchases made using your card account at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market, as described above. 3% back equates to $0.03 in % back rewards, which is equal to 3 points, for each $1 spent. 5% back equates to $0.05 in % back rewards, which is equal to 5 points, for each $1 spent. 3% back or 5% back is earned only on purchases made at Amazon.com (including digital downloads, Amazon.com Gift Cards, Amazon Fresh orders, Amazon Prime subscriptions, and items sold by third-party merchants through Amazon.com’s marketplace) and Whole Foods Market (including physical Whole Foods Market and Whole Foods Market 365 stores, and the website accessible at www.wholefoodsmarket.com). 3% back or 5% back is not earned on (i) purchases from merchants using Amazon Pay, (ii) purchases made at international Amazon retail sites (including but not limited to Amazon.ca, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, or Amazon.co.jp), or any other website operated by Amazon, (iii) purchases made at international Whole Foods Market sites, (iv) purchases of Whole Foods Market or Whole Foods Market 365 products or services through third-party sites such as Eventbrite, Instacart, Google Express and Shipt, (v) online purchases of Whole Foods Market or Whole Foods Market 365 gift cards (including through buyatab.com), event tickets or classes, (vi) purchases from certain third-party vendors operating at Whole Foods Market sites, (vii) purchases of massage services at any Whole Foods Market site, or (viii) purchases from Spa@Ink, in each case in Amazon’s sole discretion. Using a Chase Credit Card via Digital Wallet Before Receiving the Card

Yesterday, I wanted to add my Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card to my Apple Pay wallet so I could have the option to use it for promotions without having to actually carry the card in my wallet.

If you are in a cash crunch, you should avoid travel rewards credit cards until you are caught up. Here are our favorite credit cards for Intro 0% APR offers and for balance transfer offers

Chase Now Lets You Add Your Credit Card to Your Digital Wallet Without Having the Card in Hand

When I’ve had to replace my iPhone, it’s always frustrating the closest wells fargo to find all of my physical cards to re-add because with Citi and Amex you need your 3 or 4 digit security code.

From my Chase app, I was able to add it with verification done via text message instead of needing the CID number. How great, I thought. I wonder if you could do this with a brand new card as well?

And right on cue, in my Twitter feed, was today’s post from Doctor of Credit that you can now, in fact, add a brand new card to your digital wallet without having the card in your hand.

This is extremely valuable because when you apply for a new credit card, the clock starts ticking on your bonus offer period – the amount of spend you need to make in a fixed amount of time – once you are approved. And you may well be applying for the card specifically because you have some payments you want to make.

Here’s where to look inside your Chase app.

What Digital Wallets Can You Add Your Chase Card To?

You can add any of your Chase credit cards, like a Chase Freedom Unlimited, to Apple Pay, G Pay, or PayPal. It will text you a code (or you can get a voice call to your number on file).

And after a recent website/app update, you can also add all Chase Business credit cards to your mobile wallets, however it seems that *for now* you do need the actual card in hand to do so (unlike the personal cards which can be added straight from the Chase app).

Chase will generally let you call and request your card expedited anyway – which is great – but this will give you an even greater head start on your spend.

American Express will often give you a digital number you can use right away, but it’s very hit or miss. Citi, by contrast, will almost never expedite your card and you cannot add Citi cards to your wallet.

While not life changing, this is a nice new feature and good to know about.

Our Verdict

The current bonus is $50 for non-Prime and $100 for Prime, though we have seen as high as $150. $200 is highest ever. At the $150-$200 level, this already becomes an interesting signup bonus. That’s specially true given that there’s no spend requirement (I’m guessing the increased bonuses will be immediate upon approval) and that the card earn of 5% at Amazon and Whole Foods is actually useful to many people.
