Phishing attacks target Chase Bank customers

Chase Bank fisheye lens

Have you ever received an email apparently from your bank claiming that there was something wrong with your account? Even those of us savvy enough to watch for malicious messages and scams may pause for a moment, concerned that this warning just might be legitimate. And that's when criminals hope you'll take the bait.

In a new report released Tuesday, email security provider Armorblox looked at two recent phishing campaigns aimed at Chase Bank customers and offered advice on how to protect yourself from such scams.

The first campaign claimed to include a credit card statement, while the second warned recipients that their account access had been restricted to unusual activity. In both cases, the goal was the same: obtain your account credentials.

Spoofed Chase credit card statement

In this attack, the spoofed email used a subject of "Your Credit Card Statement Is Ready" and a sender name of "Jp Morgan Chase." The message itself adopted a look and layout similar to actual emails from Chase and included links to view your statement and to make payments. Clicking the primary link in the email took you to a spoofed Chase login portal that asked you to enter your bank account credentials, which the cybercriminals then naturally captured.

The domain used for the landing page was hosted by NameSilo, a legitimate boa premium rewards credit card review company but one where cybercriminals can easily and cheaply set up shop to launch their malicious campaigns. The emails bypassed spam filtering from Microsoft Exchange Online Protection and Microsoft Defender for Office 365 after being assigned a Spam Confidence Level of -1. That grade is based on an analysis that the email came from a safe sender, was sent to a safe recipient or originated from an email server on the IP Allow list.

Spoofed Chase locked account workflow

In this campaign, the attackers impersonated the Chase fraud department and told recipients that their account access had been restricted due to unusual login activity. With a subject line of "URGENT: Unusual sign-in activity," the emails used a sender name of "Chase Bank Customer Care." The message itself contained a link for potential victims to click to confirm their account and restore normal access. Naturally, clicking the link takes the user to a chase bank one credit card login page that asks for their login credentials.

This email also earned a Spam Confidence Level of -1 from Microsoft Exchange Online Protection and Microsoft Defender for Office 365, so it was able to reach the inboxes of users without any warning signs.

In these types of campaigns, cybercriminals employ a variety of tricks and tactics to fool unsuspecting victims.

Social engineering is key to a successful attack as smart cybercriminals know how to push the right buttons. The email subject lines, sender names and content all convey a sense of trust as well as a sense of urgency, prompting recipients to take quick action. Brand impersonation is another key factor. These types of emails adopt the same branding, style and layout found in legitimate messages and webpages from Chase.

How to protect yourself from these scams

To protect yourself and your organization from these types of phishing attacks, Armorblox offers a few tips.

  1. Strengthen native email security with additional controls. Both emails slipped past Microsoft's own security tools, indicating that another level of protection is needed. Organizations should enhance their native email security with layers that take a different approach to threat detection. Gartner's Market Guide for Email Security covers new security methods that surfaced in 2020.
  2. Look for for social engineering cues. We receive so many messages from service providers that we tend to act without carefully scrutinizing the message. The goal is to scan these emails in a more methodical and detailed way. Inspect the sender name, the sender email address and the language within the email. Look for inconsistencies in the email that trigger such questions as "Why is my bank sending emails to my work account" and "Why is the URL's parent domain different from chase.com?"
  3. Follow best practices for passwords and multi-factor authentication. Consider the following practices if you haven't already established them: 1) Use multi-factor authentication on all business and personal accounts where available; 2) Don't use the same password across multiple sites or accounts; 3) Use a password manager to handle your passwords; 4) Don't use passwords associated with your date of birth, anniversary date or other public information; and 5) Don't repeat passwords across accounts or use generic passwords chase bank one credit card login as "password," "qwerty" or "12345."

CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:

JPMorgan Chase's culture is shifting when it comes to inclusivity, hiring practices and acceptance of people who think differently. It's Autism Inclusion Month at the firm, and we're taking a look at the critical and important contributions of people who are neurodiverse.

With us today is the Global Head of Autism at Work, Anthony Pacilio, and JPMorgan Chase's software and performance engineer Jesse Collins. Thank you both for being here today.

ANTHONY PACILIO:

Thank you. Appreciate it.

JESSE COLLINS:

Thank you for having us.

CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:

Anthony, let's start with you. Why is a program like Autism at Work so critical? And how has the program influenced productivity and inclusivity at the firm?

ANHTONY PACILIO:

Yeah, great question. So when we started this program, it was out of business necessity. We were looking for a different type of talent. And at that time, we just didn't have enough of the talent in the IT space. So what happened was we understood that folks on the spectrum were knocking it out of the park in other companies and corporations. And so we decided to bring that here to JPMorgan Chase.

We've gone from four folks in the program in 2015 to over 225 today, in nine countries, in 40 different job roles. Some of the job roles that we have, folks on the spectrum are outperforming 90% to 140% of their peers and colleagues. So that speaks volume to the breadth of talent that we're bringing in.

CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:

Absolutely. And Jesse, you were diagnosed with autism at age 25. And you made the complete career shift from social work to the work you're doing today at JPMorgan Chase. How did a program like Autism at Work help make that career change?

JESSE COLLINS:

Yeah, Christina, I was diagnosed with autism at age 25. Growing up, I struggled with social cues and understanding facial expressions. And it became chase bank one credit card login apparent as I got older that my brain just simply assessed information and situations differently than others.

While my wife and I were dating, we had a conversation one night about the possibility of me being on the autism spectrum. And she encouraged me further to talk to my doctor, which ultimately led to my diagnosis. My diagnosis simply gave us more language and tools to help us navigate our lives together.

And I'm happy to share that we've been married now for almost three years and expecting a daughter, Zofia Rose, in May. Through our conversations after my diagnosis, we found the Autism at Work program. The program gave me access to the training and guidance I needed to shift careers and, most importantly, provided me with the necessary support and encouragement.

Too often, being different is seen as something bad or that should be hidden. But that couldn't be more wrong. Being different is a good thing. And the Autism at Work program has helped myself at J.P. Morgan recognize that neurodiversity is a true asset and something that should be celebrated.

CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:

That's chase bank one credit card login an important message. And by the way, congratulations to you and your wife and growing family. That's so exciting.

JESSE COLLINS:

Thank you.

CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:

Anthony, you've mentioned that people who are part of the program can bring their full selves to work. How have you seen the corporate culture change because of the program?

ANTHONY PACILIO:

Yeah. I mean, listen, 80% of the folks who are on the spectrum are unemployed or underemployed. So this is giving them the opportunity to come in, bring their whole selves to work, as you said, but kind of take the mask off that they might've had to utilize their entire life.

The empathy has increased. And I think the social awareness, obviously, has increased. And I think when you bring somebody in who's on the spectrum or thinks differently or has a cognitive difference, I think when you bring those folks on your team, it kind of sets you apart because now you're looking at things in a totally different light. And then people get comfortable.

And one of the misconceptions is folks on the spectrum are not social. I can tell you from firsthand experience — Jesse's a prime example of that — that is not the case. We have people leading team meetings chase bank one credit card login scrum meetings and doing different things in operations areas.

Managers are also learning different techniques and ways that they're able to communicate with their teams. It's because they're learning with somebody who's on the spectrum that there's different ways to do that.

And if we take an example of somebody who’s getting performance feedback and it's not sinking in, we try a different technique to do that. Whether it's bringing in an advocate to help out or just trying a different methodology via Skype or chat or whatever that may be. So it's actually increasing how we chase bank one credit card login to colleagues who are neurotypical as well.

The culture shift that we have now at JPMorgan Chase because of the program is absolutely unbelievable. We have many other companies and corporations asking us how we did the program. And we said we started small, and now we're scaling it to where it is one of the leading ones in the world.

CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:

And, Jesse, back over to you. What advice would you give other companies who are looking to hire people who are neurodiverse? And what can people do to embrace the neurodiverse culture even more?

JESSE COLLINS:

Yeah. If you're looking to increase your neurodiversity, I think it's important to set up the programs that go beyond recruitment. It's important to set up training programs similar to how Autism at Work has established them for JPMorgan Chase. That informs colleagues and managers on how they can reframe their practices to be more inclusive. And alleviates the burden off of the individual to have to disclose and educate others on their diagnosis, which can be really difficult and anxiety-provoking.

Additionally, it's important to address the chase bank one credit card login work environment too. When we were in the office and we chase edmonds college stats office spaces, like alternative office seating and lower lighting and designated quiet zones, those things can be really helpful to somebody who has sensory sensitivities like myself.

In general, creating a work environment that celebrates differences in thought, hosting conversations about neurodiversity — not only during Autism Inclusion Month but throughout the year — and being more conscious of practices and languages that may be unintentionally exclusive are ways that we can all build a more diverse and inclusive work environment.

CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:

Well, thank you Jesse, thank you Anthony, so much for sharing your story and a little bit more about this critical program. Appreciate your time.

ANTHONY PACILIO:

Thank you.

JESSE COLLINS:

Thank you.
