You will be happy to know that stopping ability was not neglected, with a recalibrated braking system that includes shorter pedal travel for a more assured feel when modulating the anchors. Luggage space in the F-Pace is fair, at 613l with the rear seats up or 1,440l with them folded flat. Its ground clearance is decent too: 213mm is a safe amount should you feel like tackling the odd gravel road. Though it rolls on 21-inch wheels, the 40-profile tyres offer a reasonable buffer against shallow potholes and other road imperfections.   

Visually, there is no mistaking its status with lesser models in the F-Pace line-up. Especially when it wears the shade of Atacama Orange, which our tester sported. Some of the ducts and slats might seem exaggerated, but Jaguar promises it is all functional, reducing aerodynamic lift by as much as 35% and affording a lower drag coefficient.   

Though it was bred to be rambunctious and speed-hungry, dialling the SVR down into a more docile setting reveals it is also capable of handling a commute without histrionics. For those occasions when you just want to get home in relative peace and quiet.

The front seats are quite firm, with a bucket design and heating capability for the butts of driver and passenger. The steering wheel is heated too. This updated SVR also gained the latest version of the company’s Pivi Pro infotainment system, an interface we have reported on from other Jaguar Land Rover products, one worthy of high praise. Its massive 11.4-inch display spans the width of the central fascia and offers clear, simple menus with large tiles.   

It is priced at R1,835,700 before options. For interest’s sake, a BMW X3 M Competition has a basic price of R1,970,562 while the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S goes for R1,872,000. If you like your medium-sized performance sport utilities loud and a little left-field, the F-Pace SVR makes a compelling argument.

The Jaguar F-Pace (X761) is a compact SUV made by Jaguar Land Rover, a British car manufacturer, under their Jaguar marque. It is the first model to be built by Jaguar in the SUV class. It was formally announced at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, with sales commencing in 2016 following an unveiling at the International Motor Show Germany in Frankfurt in September 2015.[4] The design of the F-Pace is based on the 2013 Jaguar C-X17 concept car.[5] The 2017 Jaguar F-PACE has been named the honorary winner of the 2017 World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year Awards at the New York International Auto Show.[6]

An F-Pace production prototype made its public debut on 4 July 2015, by leading out the Team Sky professional cycle racing team during Le Grand Départ in Utrecht, Netherlands at the start of the 2015 Tour de France. The car made its official public début at the September 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.[7] Ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show, an F-Pace, driven by professional stunt driverTerry Grant, performed a world-record-breaking 360 degree loop-the-loop.[8] Customer deliveries started in April 2016 in Europe and in May 2016 in the United States.

With its latest updates, the Jaguar F-Pace saw a host of significant changes headed its way for 2021. The most obvious: ditching the V6. While we might have thought that could be bad news for the supercharged, 550-hp V8-powered F-Pace SVR, it’s not. The potent performance crossover is not only sticking around for 2021 but sees a lot of the same substantive updates that made their way to the more pedestrian versions of the F-Pace.

Let’s talk about the most important part of the new F-Pace SVR: The engine. For those familiar with SVR-badged Jags, this could be a nice refresher. Under the 2021 F-Pace’s hood is a supercharged 5.0-liter V8. In F-Pace trim the engine makes 550 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission before making its way to the all-wheel-drive system. All that means this Jaguar crossover can hit 60 mph from a standing start in only 3.8-seconds.

Helping you take advantage of the potent V8, Jaguar also updated the 2021 F-Pace’s brakes and steering, adding a new, electric power-steering system promising more immediacy. There’s also a new power brake booster, along with a recalibrated system promising a sportier pedal. Jaguar also used the changes in the F-Pace’s bodywork to help better cool the brakes.

Like its less powerful stablemates, the 2021 SVR sees serious cabin updates. Handling the infotainment is an 11.4-inch touch screen running the same Pivi Pro system. As you’d expect, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make the cut. The revised infotainment screen also means the interior looks considerably different than the outgoing 2020 models.

We’d expect this to lag slightly behind the latest F-Pace, which hit dealers in 2021. With today’s SVRs commanding $81,750, we expect that number to rise slightly with this new model.

Ian Callum was the exterior designer for the F-Pace. The body structure comprises 80 per cent aluminium, and additional weight savings come from the composite tailgate and magnesium for parts such as the cross-car beam. The body's high torsional stiffness enables the F-TYPE-derived double-wishbone front suspension and sophisticated Integral Link rear suspension to perform even better. Together with Torque Vectoring as standard and an Electric Power Assisted Steering system tuned to give the best possible feel and response.[1]

Chassis[edit]

The F-Pace chassis is the third model to be built on Jaguar Land Rover's iQ-Al (D7a) modular platform, which is used for the XE, the second generation XF, and the Velar.[10] The design features double wishbone suspension at the front, with similarities to the system fitted to the XF and F-Type models, the rear features an entirely new subframe mounted multi-link suspension system, named by Jaguar as Integral Link. This system is a more costly combination to manufacture but allows for greater tuning to provide a good balance between handling and ride quality.[11]

The interior of the F-Pace features several existing Jaguar design cues, including the rotary gear selector which rises when the car is started. The central console, when equipped with the upgraded InControl Touch Pro system, features a 10.2 inch (26.5 cm) touch screen allowing access to in-car entertainment, satellite navigation and various vehicular settings, such as the G-Meter and engine/gear shift/steering/suspension parameters. Navigation can also be shown full-screen, in 3D on an additional 12.3-inch HD virtual instrument cluster. The F-Pace features smartphone connectivity with Wifi Hotspot and some models allow the owner to control the vehicle remotely, pre-heating the interior or unlocking the car using a smartphone application.[1] The F-Pace is also the first vehicle in Jaguar's range to feature the Activity Key, a waterproof wrist band that unlocks the F-Pace allowing the main keys to being left inside, thus preventing possible water damage.[1]

What’s In a Name

Most petrolheads are aware of the fact that Jaguar vehicles sporting the SVR badge are stripped-down, pumped-up versions of the standard car. However, while the R in the name is relatively straightforward to understand, SV stands for Special Vehicle Operations: a small skunkworks division with Jaguar that has produced some of the craziest automobiles I’ve ever seen. Case in point, the XE SV Project 8.

The British automaker recently invited me to Los Angeles, California, to drive its latest F-Pace SVR on the roads around Malibu. The drive route took us out of the city onto Highway 1 and some of the greatest ribbons of tarmac the West Coast has to offer. For the Fast & Furious nerds, yes, we also drove by Neptune’s Net.

Driving Impressions

Sitting as the proverbial last hoorah for internal-combustion-powered Jaguar vehicles, the F-Pace SVR is a savant at switching personalities between performance and luxury. In my experience, drive modes don’t generally change the ride all that much, but Jaguar’s system is an exception to the rule. As I adjusted the character of the engine, steering, suspension, and gearbox between comfort and sport (dynamic) modes via the infotainment screen, the changes were apparent. While steering and throttle response are easy for just about any automaker to get right, the adjustable dampers and gear changes were equally noticeable.

Under the hood, the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 is one of the clear focal points of the F-Pace SVR. Putting down 550 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, Jaguar managed to find another 14 lb-ft over the previous car. Sporting the same adjustable exhaust system as last year—with a rowdy performance mode and a more reserved comfort mode—the F-Pace SVR can transform itself from a brute to a whisper-quiet mile muncher at the turn of a knob. With its stainless-steel exhaust system, the unbridled exhaust note stands in stark contrast to the artificial engine noise some automakers pipe into their cars’ cabins.

Helping to put all of that power to the ground is a new active all-wheel-drive system—which now includes brake-based torque vectoring and launch control. However, it has to be said that nobody from Jaguar Land Rover explicitly told us how to use launch control, and I had to look up the activation procedure after the fact. Quite a disappointment, as the system shaves three-tenths of a second from the previous model’s 0-60 time. Having said that, the vehicle was still able to catapult itself off the line really hard if I held it on the brake.

For a vehicle that tips the scales at 4,702 pounds, the F-Pace SVR has impressive electronics thathid its weight really well through the corners. While a little body roll still creeps in under heavier loads, the brake-based torque-vectoring system really tugs the vehicle through the corner—applying the brakes to the inside wheels. This allows the outside wheels to turn much faster (as they have a longer radius to travel), therefore improving cornering.

While I could write an entire article dedicated to what's happening under the skin of the SVR, I was most amazed at how it tackled any bit of tarmac that I threw at it. It’d be easy to only chat about how it devoured the twists and turns of Malibu’s world-class roads, but once it was in comfort mode, the vehicle also aced Highways 1 and 101 with ease. SVO’s managing director says that he logs an average of 3,000 miles a month in his personal F-Pace SVR, and I can see why.

From the driver’s seat, the contact points inside the cockpit felt incredibly premium and intuitive to use. Hopping in to start the drive at the beginning of the day, I reached over to the door-mounted controls to adjust my seat and then positioned the electrically adjustable steering wheel via the controls underneath. Upon startup, I was greeted by a spritely exhaust note, along with the new 12.3-inch digital dash and heads-up display.

The Pivi Pro infotainment system was an absolute joy to use. With its curved 11.4-inch touch-screen display, pertinent information was easy to read and access. Most of my time with the infotainment system I spent in the sub-menu for individual drive-mode, which allowed me to switch certain aspects of the car between comfort and dynamic modes—engine, steering, suspension—with a single tap. Outside of the vehicle dynamics screen, I also had access to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Unlike with many cars nowadays, Jaguar’s interior accoutrementretains tactile buttons and knobs to control the air conditioning and seat heating/cooling controls. Contrary to the belief that physical control points clutter the interior, the British automaker’s solution strikes a great balance between design and functionality. The two knobs below the infotainment screen allowed me to adjust the air temperature on my side of the vehicle, while a quick press switched to the seat heating/cooling controls.

My test vehicle was also fitted with the optional Meridian sound system, which was actually quite a disappointment. Running through different genres to evaluate its performance, I found the lack of mid-range punch to be its Achilles heel. Even after fumbling around with different EQ settings for quite some time, the issue persisted. For an $800 option, the stereo was definitely a little bit of a downer in an otherwise fantastic interior.

Along with the spectacular powertrain, the SVR badge also brings aesthetic improvements to the existing F-Pace that double as performance enhancers. Jaguar said that these new additions were race-inspired by the brand’s exploits in motorsport.

Starting at the front fascia, Jaguar brought over a completely new front bumper with an x-shaped valance, which looked like it followed the design cues from the XE SV Project 8. This includes new fenders that house bigger brake cooling vents to feed fresh air to the gargantuan 395-millimeter front discs. Along with bringing an aggressive look, these exterior changes resulted in a 3 percent lower drag coefficient (.36 Cd) and a 35-percent decrease in nose lift.

A quick glance at the side profile shows much more reserved alterations. Despite their dark finish—Gloss Narvick Black with Satin Gray Inserts—the new 22-inch forged alloy wheels add to the SVR’s already burly figure. Jaguar also made a point to mention the newly contoured plastic side sills and wheel spats that add a really nice two-tone aesthetic.

I’m happy to report that these aggressive alterations resume at the back of the vehicle. Key amongst them is a new rear valance that shows off quad exhaust exits where the stainless-steel system emits the wonderful V8 song of its people. Up top, Jaguar added a new rear spoiler, which is said to enhance aerodynamic performance—this generally translates to improving the drag coefficient.

The Verdict

While Jaguar's F-Pace SVR isn’t the only swan-song for internal combustion, it was a great example of what we’ll be missing in the coming years. Aside from the complex engineering that went into hiding its weight in the corners, the SVR was a sensory experience first. I won’t hesitate to admit that it’s not the fastest vehicle in the performance SUV class, but I just don’t care. Capable of being a canyon carver on the weekends and a comfortable commuter the other five days of the week, this package is hard to beat.

Many will argue that the $84,600 price tag is too steep for what you’re getting. And it is quite a lot for any car, but getting the keys to such a capable vehicle is a reasonable exchange. So much so that I reckon the SVR will be a classic to look out for once electrification becomes mainstream.

It looks a little more aggressive and sharper, like slimmer headlights, more cuts and creases, etc. But, what’s not visible are the tweaks and add-ons made to it that make it a better performer and increases the aerodynamic efficiency.

Overall, the SUV looks smarter and the changes made to it will aid its performance capabilities better.

Driver Assistance features like Clear Exit Monitor and Adaptive Cruise Control are also present. The U.K.-spec models also benefit from a Guardian Mode. There is also stuff like the 3-D camera that works in real-time and cabin air ionization. The 2021 F-Pace received a 14-speaker Meridian sound system and ambient lighting, but there’s no word about the same in the F-Pace SVR.

What’s In a Name

Most petrolheads are aware of the fact that Jaguar vehicles sporting the SVR badge are stripped-down, pumped-up versions of the standard car. However, while the R in the name is relatively straightforward to understand, SV stands for Special Vehicle Operations: a small skunkworks division with Jaguar that has produced some of the craziest automobiles I’ve ever seen. Case in point, the XE SV Project 8.

The British automaker recently invited me to Los Angeles, California, to drive its latest F-Pace SVR on the roads around Malibu. The drive route took us out of the city onto Highway 1 and some of the greatest ribbons of tarmac the West Coast has to offer. For the Fast & Furious nerds, yes, we also drove by Neptune’s Net.

Driving Impressions

Sitting as the proverbial last hoorah for internal-combustion-powered Jaguar vehicles, the F-Pace SVR is a savant at switching personalities between performance and luxury. In my experience, drive modes don’t generally change the ride all that much, but Jaguar’s system is an exception to the rule. As I adjusted the character of the engine, steering, suspension, and gearbox between comfort and sport (dynamic) modes via the infotainment screen, the changes were apparent. While steering and throttle response are easy for just about any automaker to get right, the adjustable dampers and gear changes were equally noticeable.

Under the hood, the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 is one of the clear focal points of the F-Pace SVR. Putting down 550 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, Jaguar managed to find another 14 lb-ft over the previous car. Sporting the same adjustable exhaust system as last year—with a rowdy performance mode and a more reserved comfort mode—the F-Pace SVR can transform itself from a brute to a whisper-quiet mile muncher at the turn of a knob. While a little body roll still creeps in under heavier loads, the brake-based torque-vectoring system really tugs the vehicle through the corner—applying the brakes to the inside wheels. This allows the outside wheels to turn much faster (as they have a longer radius to travel), therefore improving cornering.

While I could write an entire article dedicated to what's happening under the skin of the SVR, I was most amazed at how it tackled any bit of tarmac that I threw at it. It’d be easy to only chat about how it devoured the twists and turns of Malibu’s world-class roads, but once it was in comfort mode, the vehicle also aced Highways 1 and 101 with ease. SVO’s managing director says that he logs an average of 3,000 miles a month in his personal F-Pace SVR, and I can see why.

From the driver’s seat, the contact points inside the cockpit felt incredibly premium and intuitive to use. Hopping in to start the drive at the beginning of the day, I reached over to the door-mounted controls to adjust my seat and then positioned the electrically adjustable steering wheel via the controls underneath. The Pivi Pro infotainment system was an absolute joy to use. With its curved 11.4-inch touch-screen display, pertinent information was easy to read and access. Unlike with many cars nowadays, Jaguar’s interior accoutrementretains tactile buttons and knobs to control the air conditioning and seat heating/cooling controls. Contrary to the belief that physical control points clutter the interior, the British automaker’s solution strikes a great balance between design and functionality. The two knobs below the infotainment screen allowed me to adjust the air temperature on my side of the vehicle, while a quick press switched to the seat heating/cooling controls.

My test vehicle was also fitted with the optional Meridian sound system, which was actually quite a disappointment. Running through different genres to evaluate its performance, I found the lack of mid-range punch to be its Achilles heel. Even after fumbling around with different EQ settings for quite some time, the issue persisted. For an $800 option, the stereo was definitely a little bit of a downer in an otherwise fantastic interior.

I’m happy to report that these aggressive alterations resume at the back of the vehicle. Key amongst them is a new rear valance that shows off quad exhaust exits where the stainless-steel system emits the wonderful V8 song of its people. Up top, Jaguar added a new rear spoiler, which is said to enhance aerodynamic performance—this generally translates to improving the drag coefficient.

The Verdict

While Jaguar's F-Pace SVR isn’t the only swan-song for internal combustion, it was a great example of what we’ll be missing in the coming years. Aside from the complex engineering that went into hiding its weight in the corners, the SVR was a sensory experience first. I won’t hesitate to admit that it’s not the fastest vehicle in the performance SUV class, but I just don’t care. Capable of being a canyon carver on the weekends and a comfortable commuter the other five days of the week, this package is hard to beat.

Many will argue that the $84,600 price tag is too steep for what you’re getting. And it is quite a lot for any car, but getting the keys to such a capable vehicle is a reasonable exchange. So much so that I reckon the SVR will be a classic to look out for once electrification becomes mainstream.

2021 Jaguar F-Pace first drive review: Don't let the wrapper fool you

A lot goes into building a luxury SUV. You need a tastefully designed cabin with upscale materials. Classy exterior styling is a prerequisite, too, as are powerful and refined drivetrains, plus all the latest tech. Since it debuted for the 2017 model year, the Jaguar F-Pace has checked most of these boxes -- yet it never really rose to the top of its segment. Rivals like the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Porsche Macan have led the way, but this British marque isn't sitting in park: The Jaguar F-Pace is substantially updated and significantly improved for 2021.

The good news is this refreshed F-Pace is better than its predecessor in nearly every way, though you may not think much has changed based on the wrapper. There are redesigned bumpers at both ends, the hood is a little different and three fresh paint colors join the palette. There are new wheel designs, too, and a smattering of small tweaks. My sporty R-Dynamic tester looks sophisticated and mildly menacing slathered in deeply saturated (and redundantly named) bluefire blue paint.

Fortunately, there's much more to report inside the 2021 F-Pace, where everything is new save the glovebox. This comprehensive redesign really pays off as the new digs are simply beautiful. The dashboard is more attractive and cleaner than before, with open-pore wood veneers or real aluminum accents. In this R-Dynamic model, nearly every surface is covered in soft, rich-smelling leather and the technology it offers is leaps and bounds ahead of what was available in the outgoing F-Pace. Even the gear selector, embellished with cricket ball stitching, is new.

The front seats are supportive and should be comfortable for many hours at a stretch. Like the dashboard and door panels, these chairs are wrapped in supple cow hides, though they also feature prominent bolsters, wings that stick out at shoulder level. These protrusions help support your torso while cornering, but they can also jab you in the shoulder blade when you turn to grab something from the passenger seat.

There are miles of room in the F-Pace's accommodating backseat. Six-foot-plus adults should have no trouble getting comfortable and staying that way while traveling in this Jag. But despite these real benefits, the vehicle has two ergonomic oddities. First, the door panels are thick, at least a handbreadth across, which seems like a waste of space. Second, the sills are really wide, requiring you to step over them to get in or out of the vehicle, which gets annoying.

Eliminating unwanted racket, active noise cancellation is standard in the F-Pace, ditto for the refreshed Jaguar XF sedan and updated Range Rover Velar. Curiously, 2021 is the first year Jaguar Land Rover is implementing this serenity-enhancing technology and in this application it does an admirable job keeping the interior tranquil by cancelling out tire, wind and powertrain ruckus.

The centerpiece of the F-Pace's new dashboard is a standard 11.4-inch display that's three times brighter than the outgoing model's 10-incher. This touchscreen is home to Jaguar's new Pivi Pro infotainment system, which is powered by BlackBerry (yes, that BlackBerry). Four gasoline-burning engines are offered in the 2021 F-Pace. A 2.0-liter turbo-four serves base duty and supercharged 5.0-liter V8 gives range-topping SVR models supercar-rivaling acceleration. Between these powertrain bookends, two flavors of 3.0-liter I6 are offered. Both engines are turbocharged and electrically supercharged, plus they benefit from a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which helps improve acceleration, provides regenerative braking and smooths out stop-start events. The base version of this six-shooter provides 335 horsepower, but the variant found in R-Dynamic models pumps out 395 hp and 406 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is fitted across the range, sending torque to all four wheels through a standard all-wheel-drive system.

That uplevel I6 is plenty punchy, hustling the hefty F-Pace to 60 mph in around five seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. Smoother than satin sheets, this engine is a joy to flog, even if it doesn't feel quite as potent as its output numbers suggest. Helping this Jaguar SUV leap forward when you bury the accelerator, the gearbox is prompt and polite, shifting when you need it to and doing so without calling attention to itself. The F-Pace's powertrain is nicely sorted and other aspects of its dynamics are as well. The steering is tight and sporty without being jittery or kicking back when you encounter large surface imperfections. My tester rolls on stylish, two-tone aluminum wheels (a $2,000 option) that measure 21 inches across. Despite their large diameter and the relatively low-profile Michelin tires (265/45R21s if you're curious), the F-Pace's ride quality is totally livable. Yes, it's on the firm side, but it's by no means abusive. The tires and suspension keep the body well controlled without sacrificing refinement. The only noticeable dynamic disappointment is the brake pedal, which is a little squishier than I'd like.

Simplifying things, Jaguar retooled the F-Pace's model structure. In 2020, a whopping 12 derivations of F-Pace were available; it's been pared down to just five. This handsomely updated luxury SUV starts at $51,000 and change for an entry-level variant with the four-cylinder engine. Naturally, the journalist-special R-Dynamic version tested here is considerably richer, checking out for $82,245 (including $1,150 in delivery fees), a ritzy sum that's inflated by a smattering of options including the $2,110 Hot Climate Pack, $2,220 Premium Upgrade Interior Pack, $2,925 14-way sport front seats and a handful of other goodies.

Without conducting a formal comparison test, it's hard to say whether the updated Jaguar F-Pace is more appealing than segment-leading rivals like the Q5, X3 and Macan, but it's still a damn good luxury SUV that's manifestly superior to its predecessor.
