Out of Time: Do Not Revive the F-22

Ever since the House Armed Services Tactical Air and Land Forces subcommittee revealed its legislative language mandating the Pentagon study restarting the F-22 production line, the defense world has been abuzz with speculation, hopes, and dreams. While there seems to be consensus that truncating the original F-22 production was a bad idea, restarting production now will only make things worse.

How We Got Here

Washington, D.C. collectively possesses the memory of a goldfish. Those left to deal with the repercussions and politically motivated, short-sighted decisions often need to remind others of the original policy sin.

Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates was most responsible for the termination of the F-22 program. His reasoning in 2008: The F-22 had no place in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This contention dismisses the notion that the U.S. military should prepare of wars of necessity — the ones that can literally change our way of life and destroy our nation — and focus instead on wars of choice that, while long and expensive, are not existential. The United States has not fought a war of necessity for decades. The purpose of the F-22 was to ensure the Joint force could reasonably ensure air superiority in these wars. Trying to make a connection between this and a terrorist plotting an attack from a remote cave in Afghanistan is irresponsible at best.

In mid-2008, Secretary of the Air Force Michael Wynne and Chief of Staff of the Air Force General Michael “Buzz” Moseley were fired for advocating the preservation of the F-22 program, and the newly appointed leadership sang an entirely new tune: 187 F-22s were all the Air Force online banking first citizens national bank need.

Ignoring the nearly insurmountable effort to find the missing tooling, and somehow finding the money to pay for it, the entire premise of building an obsolete aircraft using an equally obsolete acquisitions process is simply not viable.

Now envision the time of re-building an aircraft.

The first potential “new” F-22s would field around 2030, only to be dead on arrival by the Air Force’s own estimates. By then, the sixth generation fighter program is expected to begin fielding to replace the original 187 F-22s. Designed to last 30 years and 8,000 hours, new F-22s would approach retirement in 2060 if fielded in 2030. The real threat to the F-22 is probably not a faster, stealthier, more maneuverable fighter. Anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) systems and highly mobile surface-to-air missiles provide a relatively low-cost asymmetric response with a persistent, enduring, and capable threat that is not easily countered. The most potent of these systems are specifically designed to counter stealth. The U.S. Air Force has just wrapped up an overhaul of its fleet of F-22 Raptor fighters. The planes also received inspections and refurbishment of the flight control system.

The work involved taking all of the jets through “six unique maintenance machines for structural repair, modification, coatings restoration, and aircraft damage repair,” according to the Air Force, as well as performing “structural modifications to increase total flying hour serviceability on each aircraft by 8,000 hours.”

The Air Force originally designed the F-22 Raptor to have an 8,000-hour lifespan, so this effectively doubles the lifespan of the world’s first fifth-generation fighter jet. The extra service life this upgrade entails will add decades to the F-22 fleet’s lifespan.

The overhaul includes refurbishing the low observable coatings on the engine inlets. Maintainers also inspected and overhaul aircraft flight controls as deemed necessary. The coatings consists of a “boot layer” of a radar absorbent material, followed by layers of paint.

US deploys F-22 stealth fighters to Qatar amid Iran tensions

The United States has deployed F-22 stealth fighters to Qatar for the first time, its military said, adding to a buildup of US forces in the Gulf amid tensions with Iran.

The Air Force F-22 Raptor stealth fighters have been deployed “to defend American forces and interests”, the US Air Forces Central Command said in a statement on Friday.

It did not specify how many of the hi-tech planes had been sent.

Tehran and Washington have been locked in an escalating standoff since US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from a multi-party 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and reimposed sanctions on the Islamic republic.

Tensions spiked last week when Iran shot down a US drone over sensitive Gulf waters following a series of tanker attacks that Washington blamed on Tehran, which has denied involvement.

Since then the arch-foes have been locked in a war of words, which escalated this week when Trump announced new sanctions against Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Iran has threatened to abandon some of its commitments under the nuclear deal unless the remaining partners – the United Kingdom, China, France, Germany and Russia – help it circumvent US sanctions and let it sell its oil.

In May, the US Air Force deployed several nuclear-capable B-52 Stratofortress bombers to the Gulf in response to what the Defense Department described as a possible plan by Iran to attack US forces in the region, as well as an aircraft carrier task force.

The F-22 was created as the replacement of the successful F-15 Eagle in the early 2000s. The US Air Force claims it “cannot be matched by any known or projected fighter aircraft”.

Costing about $150m apiece, the F-22 Raptor is a fifth-generation, single-seat, twin-engine fighter jet, designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, but also has ground attack and signal intelligence capabilities.

Lockheed Martin, the prime manufacturer, built most of the F-22’s airframe and weapons systems and conducted final assembly, while Boeing provided the wings, fuselage, avionics integration, and training systems.

Service officials had originally planned to buy a total of 750 planes but in 2009, the programme was cut to 187 operational production aircraft due to high costs.

Al Udeid serves as one of the most important overseas US military bases with operations throughout the Middle East launched from Qatar.

The base hosts about 11,000 US and US-led coalition forces and over 100 operational aircraft.

In the aftermath of the Gulf War in 1991, the US and Qatar signed a military cooperation agreement after which the US military moved to Qatar in 2003, evacuating the Prince Sultan Airbase in Saudi Arabia.

Strategically placed, about 80 percent of aerial refuelling in the region is being done from Al Udeid, according to Qatari officials.

In April 2016, the United States Air Force (USAF) deployed twelve Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptors to RAF Lakenheath to conduct air training with other Europe-based aircraft while demonstrating U.S. commitment to NATO allies and the security of Europe.

Aviation enthusiasts have been flocking to RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk to catch chase home mortgage foreclosures glimpse of the United States Air Force's latest jet fighter.

This was a good opportunity for the F-22 Raptors to train alongside Lakenheath's F-15 Eagles as well as the Royal Air Force's Typhoons, and training commenced from Monday 18th April.

The Lockheed Martin F-22A 'Raptor' is a fifth-generation single-seat, twin-engine, all-weather stealth tactical fighter aircraft developed for the United States Air Force. The aircraft is considered to be unmatched by any known or projected fighter and the combination of stealth, aerodynamic performance, and situational awareness gives the aircraft unprecedented air combat capabilities.

It is the first operational aircraft to combine supercruise, supermaneuverability, stealth, and sensor fusion. It can sustain supersonic flight without the use of afterburners and the two turbofan engines, which each have a maximum thrust of 35,000 lb, incorporate thrust vectoring nozzles, for increased maneuverability. Air to Air and Air to Surface weapons are carried in three internal weapons bays so that the Raptor can maintain its stealth capabilities.

The twelve F-22 Raptors which deployed to RAF Lakenheath included:- 04-4072, 04-4080, 04-4081, 05-4084, 05-4086, 05-4089, 05-4091, 05-4094, 05-4095, 05-4101, 05-4106, and 05-4107.

On Tuesday 26th April, two F-22 Raptors, callsign 'Mongol Flight', took part in low-level flying over 'Low Fly Area 7', also called the 'Mach Loop' in North Wales, along with two F-15E Strike Eagles and an F-15C Eagle from Lakenheath. They were given clearance to fly as low as 500 feet.

A pair of F-22 Raptors and one KC-135 Stratotanker also deployed to Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania on Wednesday 27th April for a brief stay before the Raptors returned to RAF Lakenheath to continue their training deployment that ends in May.

Eight of the F-22A Raptors departed Lakenheath on Sunday 8th May 2016 to return to Tyndall AFB, Florida. The remaining four Raptors departed on Monday 9th May.

The second half was a whole different story. Memphis was limited to 21 points in each of the final two quarters, while the Raptors were putting up 67 second-half points, connecting on 24 of their 41 shots. Toronto made all four 3-point attempts in the fourth.

“In the first half, we were bodying them. We were killing them in the paint,” Brooks said of his Grizzlies teammates. “In the second half, we weren’t doing the same thing on offense. Our defense let down.”

Bane added: “I think that (the Raptors) turned their pressure up for sure. … I think they did a good job of making adjustments at halftime.”

The comeback provided a nice feeling for Toronto, which has not had great luck on a road trip that finally ends later this week in Indianapolis. And things did not look good in the first half.

“We’re a young team and sometimes it is hard to stress the urgency and what it takes to win in this league every night,” VanVleet said. “You can’t go out there and go through the motions, or you’re going to have a team put 71 on you in the first half. Then you will be fighting uphill. Luckily, we were able to turn it around, but it’s not really the way we want to live.”

Jenkins hailed the verdict saying the jury’s decision “gives me a lot of hope.”

“Hopefully, this sends just shockwaves throughout our country, understanding that justice can be served, but there is still so much work to be done in our judicial system,” Jenkins said, adding that while there is satisfaction in the verdict “We should never be in this situation. Ever.”

US deploys F-22 stealth fighters to Qatar amid Iran tensions

The United States has deployed F-22 stealth fighters to Qatar for the first time, its military said, adding to a buildup of US forces in the Gulf amid tensions with Iran.

The Air Force F-22 Raptor stealth fighters have been deployed “to defend American forces and interests”, the US Air Forces Central Command said in a statement on Friday.

It did not specify how many of the hi-tech planes had been sent.

Tehran and Washington have been locked in an escalating standoff since US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from a multi-party 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and reimposed sanctions on the Islamic republic.

Tensions spiked last week when Iran shot down a US drone over sensitive Gulf waters following a series of tanker attacks that Washington blamed on Tehran, which has denied involvement.

Since then the arch-foes have been locked in a war of words, which escalated this week when Trump announced new sanctions against Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Iran has threatened to abandon some of its commitments under the nuclear deal unless the remaining partners – the United Kingdom, China, France, Germany and Russia – help it circumvent US sanctions and let it sell its oil.

In May, the US Air Force deployed several nuclear-capable B-52 Stratofortress bombers to the Gulf in response to what the Defense Department described as a possible plan by Iran to attack US forces in the region, as well as an aircraft carrier task force.

The F-22 was created as the replacement of the successful F-15 Eagle in the early 2000s. The US Air Force claims it “cannot be matched by any known or projected fighter aircraft”.

Costing about $150m apiece, the F-22 Raptor is a fifth-generation, single-seat, twin-engine fighter jet, designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, but also has ground attack and signal intelligence capabilities.

Lockheed Martin, the prime manufacturer, built most of the F-22’s airframe and weapons systems and conducted final assembly, while Boeing provided the wings, fuselage, avionics integration, and training systems.

Service officials had originally planned to buy a total of 750 planes but in 2009, the programme was cut to 187 operational production aircraft due to high costs.

Al Udeid serves as one of the most important overseas US military bases with operations throughout the Middle East launched from Qatar.

The base hosts about 11,000 US and US-led coalition forces and over 100 operational aircraft.

In the aftermath of the Gulf War in 1991, the US and Qatar signed a military cooperation agreement after which the US military moved to Qatar in 2003, evacuating the Prince Sultan Airbase in Saudi Arabia.

Strategically placed, about 80 percent of aerial refuelling in the region is being done from Al Udeid, according to Qatari officials.

As already noted, Pacific Iron 2021 will also be yet another demonstration of the Air Force's ongoing development of new concepts of operations surrounding rapid deployments and distributed operations, which the service presently refers to as Agile Combat Employment (ACE). This is all heavily tied to broader efforts to be more prepared for higher-end conflicts, particularly in the Pacific, and to rely less on established bases. Andersen Air Force Base on Guam, a key strategic American military outpost in the region, would be a primary target in any large-scale fight with a near-peer adversary in the Pacific region, such as China. 

This reality has already pushed the Air Force to work on expanding the available facilities at Guam's Northwest Field, as well as on Tinian, among other locations in the Pacific, to provide alternative basing options. Earlier this year, some of the service's F-35As, as well as F-16C/D Viper fighter jets, deployed to Northwest Field to demonstrate that airstrip's ability to handle more robust combat aviation operations. Before recent improvements were made, it was only able to accommodate C-130-type cargo aircraft and helicopters.

Altogether, it will be very interesting to see how Pacific Iron 2021 plays out and what conclusions the Air Force might draw about its Agile Combat Employment concept, as well as about the future of its F-22s as those jets get closer to the twilight of their careers.

The U.S. Air Force has just wrapped up an overhaul of its fleet of F-22 Raptor fighters. The massive upgrade, conducted at Hill Air Force base in Utah, included structural repairs to extend the service lives of the fighter jets, and fixes to each fighter’s anti-radar stealth coating. The planes also received inspections and refurbishment of the flight control system.

The work involved taking all of the jets through “six unique maintenance machines for structural repair, modification, coatings restoration, and aircraft damage repair,” according to the Air Force, as well as performing “structural modifications to increase total flying hour serviceability on each aircraft by 8,000 hours.”

The Air Force originally designed the F-22 Raptor to have an 8,000-hour lifespan, so this effectively doubles the lifespan of the world’s first fifth-generation fighter jet. The extra service life this upgrade entails will add decades to the F-22 fleet’s lifespan.

The overhaul includes refurbishing the low observable coatings on the engine inlets. Maintainers also inspected and overhaul aircraft flight controls as deemed necessary. The coatings consists of a “boot layer” of a radar absorbent material, followed by layers of paint.

It’s not exactly clear how many F-22s received the upgrade. The Air Force says 247 Raptors were involved in the process, but the service really has only 185 jets. The Air Force counts 123 F-22s in its primary mission aircraft inventory, or F-22s that can carry out training and combat missions, as well as another 28 jets capable of only carrying out training missions. That adds up to 151 jets, suggesting the number 247 may be a typo.

In April 2016, the United States Air Force (USAF) deployed twelve Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptors to RAF Lakenheath to conduct air training with other Europe-based aircraft while demonstrating U.S. commitment to NATO allies and the security of Europe.

Aviation enthusiasts have been flocking to RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk to catch a glimpse of the United States Air Force's latest jet fighter.

These F-22 Raptors are from the 95th Fighter Squadron (nicknamed 'Boneheads') , 325th Fighter Wing at Tyndall Air Force Base, in Florida. The first four F-22s arrived at RAF Lakenheath on Monday 11 April, followed by four more on Tuesday 12 April. The last four arrived at Lakenheath on Sunday 17 April. Approximately 220 airmen and associated equipment were deployed to Lakenheath.

RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, is home to the 48th Fighter Wing, also known as the Liberty Wing, which includes three squadrons of McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle aircraft. This was a good opportunity for the F-22 Raptors to train alongside Lakenheath's F-15 Eagles as well as the Royal Air Force's Typhoons, and training commenced from Monday 18th April.

The Lockheed Martin F-22A 'Raptor' is a fifth-generation single-seat, twin-engine, all-weather stealth tactical fighter aircraft developed for the United States Air Force. The aircraft is considered to be unmatched by any known or projected fighter and the combination of stealth, aerodynamic performance, and situational awareness gives the aircraft unprecedented air combat capabilities.

It is the first operational aircraft to combine supercruise, supermaneuverability, stealth, and sensor fusion. It can sustain supersonic flight without the use of afterburners and the two turbofan engines, which each have a maximum thrust of 35,000 lb, incorporate thrust vectoring nozzles, for increased maneuverability. Air to Air and Air to Surface weapons are carried in three internal weapons bays so that the Raptor can maintain its stealth capabilities.

The twelve F-22 Raptors which deployed to RAF Lakenheath included:- 04-4072, 04-4080, 04-4081, 05-4084, 05-4086, 05-4089, 05-4091, 05-4094, 05-4095, 05-4101, 05-4106, and 05-4107.

The Royal Air Force Typhoons have already worked with the F-22 Raptor in previous 'Red Flag' and 'Western Zephyr' exercises in the USA. These exercises continue the interoperability and integration of RAF operations with the fifth generation F-22, ahead of the introduction into service of the F-35 Lightning II.

On Wednesday 20th April, U.S. and French military and civic leaders attended the Lafayette Escadrille Memorial event in Marnes-la-Couquette, France, to commemorate the centennial of the flying squadron's formation. The Lafayette Escadrille was formed on April 20, 1916 by 38 U.S. volunteer pilots who flew under French command a year before the U.S. entered into WWI. To mark this event, four of the F-22 Raptors made a flypast along with a B-52 Stratofortress, three FAF Mirage 2000Ns, a FAF Rafale and a World War I-era Stearman PT-17 biplane.

Two of the F-22 Raptors at Lakenheath, and one KC-135 Stratotanker from RAF Mildenhall, arrived at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, Romania on Friday 22nd April. This deployment is a demonstration of support for Romania and to showcase the flexible response and range of capabilities of the F-22 Raptors of 95th Fighter Squadron. The two Raptors returned to RAF Lakenheath on Monday night to continue their training deployment.

On Tuesday 26th April, two F-22 Raptors, callsign 'Mongol Flight', took part in low-level flying over 'Low Fly Area 7', also called the 'Mach Loop' in North Wales, along with two F-15E Strike Eagles and an F-15C Eagle from Lakenheath. They were given clearance to fly as low as 500 feet.

A pair of F-22 Raptors and one KC-135 Stratotanker also deployed to Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania on Wednesday 27th April for a brief stay before the Raptors returned to RAF Lakenheath to continue their training deployment that ends in May.

Eight of the F-22A Raptors departed Lakenheath on Sunday 8th May 2016 to return to Tyndall AFB, Florida. The remaining four Raptors departed on Monday 9th May.

The Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptor is also expected to participate in this year's Royal International Air Tattoo event on 8th-10th July 2016.

The F-22A raptor was introduced December 15th, 2005. The F-22A Raptor originated in the United States. It is currently Active. The F-22 has the role of a Stealth Air Superiority Fighter. Manufactured by: Lockhead Martin Aeronautics and Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. RWR (Radar warning receiver): range of 250 nmi (463 km) or more. Radar: 125-150 miles (200-240 km) against 1 m2 targets (Estimated range).

General Characteristics

The F-22A Raptor holds a crew of one, it’s length is 62 ft 1 in, with a wingspan of 44 ft 6 in, a height of 16 ft 8 in. The wing area is 840ft2. The weight empty is 43,430 lb, weight loaded, 65,460 lb. Max takeoff weight: 83,500 lb.

Four external hard points can be fitted to carry weapons or fuel tanks, each with a capacity of about 5,000 lb.

It takes three months of ground training and another three months of air based training to fly the F-22A Raptor.

Production

The first production F-22 was delivered to Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, on 14 January 2003 and “Dedicated Initial Operational Test and Evaluation” commenced on 27 October 2003, By 2004, 51 Raptors were in service.

The first crash of a production F-22 occurred during takeoff at Nellis Air Force Base on 20, December 2004, in which the pilot ejected safely prior to impact. The crash investigation revealed that a brief interruption in power during an engine shutdown prior to flight caused a malfunction in the flight-control system; consequently, the aircraft design was corrected to avoid the problem.

In August 2007, the United States Air Force signed a $5 billion, multi-year contract with Lockheed Martin that will extend production to 2011, and as of 2008, F-22 Raptors are being procured at the rate of 20 per year.

In a ceremony on 29 August 2007, Lockheed Martin reached its “100th F-22 Raptor” milestone, delivering aircraft 05-4100.

The United States Air Force originally planned to order 750 ATF’s with production beginning in 1994: however, the 1990 major Aircraft Review altered the plan to 648 aircraft beginning in 1996. The goal changed again in 1994, when it became 442 aircraft entering service in 2003 or 2004, but a 1997 Department of Defense report put the purchase at 339. In 2003, the Air Force said that the existing congressional cost cap limited the purchase to 277. By 2006, the Pentagon said it will buy 183 aircraft, which would save $15 billion but would raise the cost of each aircraft, and this plan has been de facto approved by Congress in the form of a multi-year procurement plan, which still holds open the possibility for new orders past that point. The total cost of the program by 2006 was $62 billion.

Stealth

Although several recent Western fighter aircraft are less detectable on radar than previous designs using techniques such as radar absorbent material-coated S-shaped intake ducts that shield the compressor fan from reflecting radar waves, the F-22 design placed a much higher degree of importance on low observance throughout the entire spectrum of sensors including radar signature, visual, infrared, acoustic, and radio frequency. The stealth of the F-22 is due to a combination of factors, including the overall shape of the aircraft, the use of radar absorbent material (RAM), and attention to detail such as hinges and pilot helmets that could provide a radar return.

However, reduced radar cross section is only one of five facets that designers addressed to create a stealth design in the F-22. The F-22 has also been designed to disguise its infrared emissions to make it harder to detect by infrared homing ("heat seeking") surface to-air or air-to-air missiles. Designers also made the aircraft less visible to the naked eye, and controlled radio and noise emissions.

The Raptor has an under bay carrier made for hiding heat from missile threats, like surface-to-air missiles. The F-22 apparently relies less on maintenance-intensive radar absorbent material and coatings than previous stealth designs like the F-117. These materials caused deployment problems due to their susceptibility to adverse weather conditions. Unlike the B-2, which requires climate-controlled hangars, the F-22 can undergo repairs on the flight line or in a normal hangar. Furthermore, the F-22 has a warning system (called "Signature Assessment System" or "SAS") which presents warning indicators when routine wear-and-tear have degraded the aircraft's radar signature to the point of requiring more substantial repairs. The exact radar cross section of the F-22 remains classified.

  1. Bhai during applying for new debit card, if we choose same primary & secondary acc, it not allowing to proceed saying primary & secondary acc can't be same. Then how to apply? If we choose diff primary & secondary acc, what does dat mean? In which acc, it will be linked?
