how to dress for hot weather when you re fat

I've pulled out my "summer clothes" and found a handful of things I can wear. A below-the-knee black tube skirt. Stay clear of tube tops, hot pants, cutoff jeans, shorts suits, micro-minis, bikinis, bustiers, cutout dresses and slit-up-to-there skirts, too. FROM the sweat, to the clothes, to the thigh chafe, this is why now is the worst time of year to be overweight. Melanie Tait. 4 min read.

How to dress for hot weather when you re fat -

As a team, we’re often fielding fashion-centric quandaries via Twitter, text and Instagram DM, so we figured, why not make it dot-com official? Welcome to Might I Suggest, the style advice column that solves your most elusive market searches and enduring style challenges. This week, Harling answers a seasonally-appropriate query from community member, Olivia:

How can I dress for unbearable heat but still find creativity in my closet?

I identify with this inquiry so deeply it resonates in the very marrow of my bones. Heat waves are abounding in major cities around the world, New York included. My armpits are never not moist. My rosacea is never not acting up. My hair is never not moonlighting as the most cumbersome of neck sweaters. I am never not devising schemes for how I can wear as little clothing as possible while still maintaining some semblance of personal style. Along the way, I’ve developed some salient outfit ideas that skirt within the bounds of acceptable nudity. Allow me to introduce you to them, ranked according to the percentage of nakedness you’re inclined to indulge in:

30% Naked? I Gotchu

Where 30% nudity is concerned, might I suggest a sleeveless shirt and shorts? But not boring ones, I promise. Not your typical white-tank-and-denim-cut-off fare. No! We’re here to beat the heat whilst simultaneously beating the same-sameness that haunts a wardrobe whenever dramatic weather comes along, and beat them we shall. Potentially with these purple shorts from LPA paired with this heavily discounted pleated dream from Rosie Assoulin. Oooh, or how about these delicious twill shorts with a hot pink tank that will chemically induce your brain to crave watermelon (well, maybe, but seems likely)?

60% Naked? Giddy-Up

If you’re aiming for the sweet, sweet bliss of 60% nudity, might I suggest a sheer dress? This black one with lace trim is super pretty, but I also love this white one for a more ethereal, nightgown-esque feel (doesn’t hurt that it’s 100% linen and $56.25 with the promo code REAL). Also very into this crochet option ($19.99!) from Urban Outfitters. What you wear under your sheer dress is, of course, up to you and the places you intend to wear it. A matching bra and high-waist underwear set can look quite cool, having tried that combo myself on numerous occasions. This one from Lonely Lingerie is a delicate treat, while this from Pansy offers more coverage. If you’re looking for more coverage in general than a bra and underwear have to offer, try bike shorts (Haley is obsessed with these from Cuyana) and a contrasting tank (I love these from Entireworld).

90% Naked? Let’s Do This

If you can get away with wearing a swimsuit as your shirt and little else, might I suggest doing so immediately? There are chic ways to do so without looking like you’re actually at the beach, I assure you. For example: layer this short-sleeved button down shirt over this bikini top and wear this skirt on the bottom. Voila! OR, wear this on-sale one-piece with these easy breezy linen pants. Flips flops optional but encouraged.

What outfit tricks do you have up your navel when it comes to staying cool while still getting dressed?

How to get to sleep in the heat on a summer night

  • Warm weather keeping you up? We share 24 easy, expert-approved hacks on how to sleep in the heat.

Longer days, sunny skies and family days out – the British summertime is a period we all look forward to each year. And whilst the season may be our favourite, the temperatures can often cause havoc to our sleeping patterns – with the extra heat leaving us restless, overheated and unable to fall asleep.

As sleep expert Dr Nerina Ramlakhan explains: “If you’re too hot this can stop you getting to sleep and staying asleep. The brain needs to be a fraction of a degree cooler than the rest of the body to achieve optimal sleep. When the brain is too hot this can affect both deep sleep and REM which results in more tossing and turning throughout the night, causing restlessness and broken sleeping patterns. Cooling the body will alleviate this and increase the body’s chance of getting the deep, nourishing sleep it needs.”

With this in mind, we asked the experts and gathered the necessary research on how to beat the heat when trying to sleep. So if you’re suffering with slumber during the summer months, feel over tired and are struggling to wake up the next morning, we recommend getting to grips with a few of these tips.

How to sleep in the heat:

Here are 24 ideas to help you get a cool night’s slumber on a hot and sticky summer night…

    1. Keep your hands and feet out of the duvet

Dangling our feet out from under the covers is many people’s go-to when it comes to cooling down on a hot night.

And Chief Sleep Officer at Sealy UK, Neil Robinson, suggests we’ve got the right idea. He reveals that while there’s a common belief that we lose heat from our heads our ‘hands and feet are [actually] key to keeping cool’ at night. So say goodbye to socks and be sure to let these limbs dangle out the duvet.

    2. Get naked

sleeping naked is one way to sleep in the heat

Turns out sleeping in the buff gives you an all-round better night’s sleep in the heat according to experts at the Sleep Council.

Opting out of pyjamas will cool down your body’s temperature, which will not only help you get a better sleep on a hot night, but will regulate your skin’s temperature to stop you waking up throughout the night.

It’s also said that snoozing without clothes on is more comfortable and will stop you getting irritated when it’s balmy. What’s more, a study into cooler body temperature can increase your metabolism and help you burn calories while you sleep, as well as stop you getting a yeast infection by limiting the warm, moist areas for bacteria to grow.

    3. Sleep on your side

If you usually sleep on your back or front, you should try sleeping on your side when it’s too hot to sleep.

This sleep position actually exposes a larger portion of your body to the air, letting the heat from your body escape and regulating your body temperature to a much more comfortable level.

    4. Cool down with a flannel

Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, author of The Little Book of Sleep: The Art of Natural Sleep, says that the secret behind body temperature at night is keeping your body warm but your head cool.

Sleeping with a cold flannel on your head is the perfect way to achieve this balance, she says: “Place a wet flannel in the fridge for an hour or so before getting into bed and lay it on your forehead to help you drift off to sleep.”

    5. Drink something hot

Drinking a hot drink is how to sleep on a hot night

We know it seems a bit backwards, but according to experts, drinking a cup of tea or similar can actually help you to regulate your body temperature when it’s muggy.

A 2012 study by the University of Ottawa showed that a hot drink helps release sweat, which in turn cools your cool temperature.

Dr Ollie Jay, one of the researchers of the study told the Smithsonian Mag: “If you drink a hot drink, it does result in a lower amount of heat stored inside your body, provided the additional sweat that’s produced when you drink the hot drink can evaporate.”

So the next time you’re tossing and turning, try brewing a decaff cuppa.

    6. Use a hot water bottle

Who knew that our best friend in winter could also come in handy during summer?

If you’re feeling the heat and can’t sleep, this tip backed by the Sleep Council will do the trick…

Get you hot bottle out and fill it with ice cold water or if you want to make it even colder, pop in the freezer 10 mins before your bedtime and take it out just before. An ice cold hug never felt so good…

    7. DON’T have a cold shower

‘A cold shower or bath before bed will actually have the effect of raising your body temperature, so make sure the water is tepid. ‘

And try running your feet and wrists under cold water before going to bed,’ adds Dr Nerina.

    8. Move rooms

Heat rises, so on really hot nights you might want to consider moving downstairs to sleep.

If you’re planning on moving the kids down too you could make a game out of it and pretend they are setting up an indoor camp!

    9. Ventilate the attic

If you have an attic, open the hatch to it. This will give the hot air in the house somewhere to escape to and will bring down the room temperature in the bedrooms.

It’s also a good idea to keep your bedroom doors open to help hot air escape and to circulate cool air from your open windows.

    10. Don’t stress

Reading a book can help you sleep in the heat

Tossing and turning and increased frustration about not getting our NHS-recommended 6-9 hours sleep a night are all counter-productive actions when wanting to sleep.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do is take a breath and accept that we’re struggling. Then get up and try something soothing – like reading a book, writing down thoughts or even folding the laundry.

Avoid activities that involve a blue light (i.e. phones or TV) and return to bed when you feel sleepy.

    11. Soak your feet in cold water

Heat is lost through your extremities, so soaking your feet in some cold water before you head to bed can help to cool your entire body down.

The water will cool the pulse points on your feet and ankles, instantly helping you to feel a little more sane before sleeping.

    12. Try a rice sock

This may seem like a bit of a weird one, but bear with us…

Fill up an old sock with raw rice, tie it with an elastic band at the end and pop in the freezer for a few hours.

Take it to bed with you and use it on your face and neck to cool you down on hot nights – simple and strange, yet effective.

    13. Mist a cooling spray

If the hot night air is messing up your little one’s routine as well as yours, keep a water spray (like the ones you use on indoor plants or for ironing) in the fridge and spray your little one to help cool them down when they wake up.

Buy a ready-made one or make your own with half water and half alcohol (bought from the chemist). The alcohol helps the water evaporate faster, which helps your body to cool down.

Try Beauty Formulas’ Body & Face Cooling Mist Spray, £3.99

    14. Invest in a fan

A fan will help you to sleep in the heat

    Credit: Getty

A fan is an obvious investment in ensuring good sleep during the heat. And even studies support that electric fans have a “beneficial effect” in extreme heat and humidity.

Get your hands on a fan and position it at the end of your bed or on your bedside table. Some troubled sleepers even swear by sleeping with a fan on all year round if you’re prone to overheating during the night.

Not only will it keep your face and head cool, but they gentle humming noise will soothe you to sleep.

Try LIVIVO Electric 16” Pedestal Fan, £24.95

    15. Ice the air

ice helps to cool you down in the night

    Credit: Getty

This may seem a little elaborate, but if the fan isn’t quite cool enough for you, iced air will do the trick.

Get a tray and fill it with ice and a some water. Position your fan just behind the tray. As the ice melts it makes the air above the water cooler, and then it gets blown in your direction, helping you get a cooler night’s sleep.

    16. Cheat your sheets

A close up of white bed sheets

Put your bedsheets in the fridge – yes, really!

Fold them up, place them in a bag and pop them in the fridge for an hour before bedtime, they’ll keep you cool for long enough to help you drift off.

You could also dampen them slightly, which will keep them cooler for even longer. Just make sure you’re washing your sheets often enough in warm weather…

    17. Cotton on to better bedding

A close up of white bedding

    Credit: Paul Strowger/Getty

Your silky sheets may look fabulous in your boudoir, but they’re definitely not keeping you cool.

Cotton sheets work wonders for a stuffy sleep in a number of ways. The material has breathable qualities which cool down your skin in the night, whilst additionally absorbing any excess body sweat.

For optimum freshness on a balmy summer night, light-coloured cotton is the only way to go. White or cream cotton sheets tend to be lighter in weight and dark colours absorb heat – which we don’t want!

Egyptian cotton is another factor that should be on your checklist as it is especially breathable.

Try John Lewis’s Crisp and Fresh 200 Thread Count Egyptian Cotton Double Fitted Sheet, £22

    18. Choose the right sleepwear

If you won’t consider sleeping naked during hot nights, then it’s time to rethink your summer PJ’s.

Science says that light, thin materials like cotton aids sleep in the heatas it draws sweat away from your body while still letting your skin breathe.

Clothing that exposes hands and feet are also encouraged, as we lose most heat through our extremities.

Try LaRedoute’s Short Pyjamas in Cotton Mix Jersey with Lace Trim, £18

    19. Exercise in the morning

    a woman exercising outside

Exercise inevitably increases our core body temperature, which is the last thing we need when trying to get some shut eye on a sweltering night.

Rather than exercising in the evening after work, Chief Sleep Officer at Sealy UK, Neil Robinson, suggests that we should: ‘exercise first thing in the morning to kick start your metabolism throughout the day, and leave you feeling ready to rest in the evening’.

    20. Get outside

close up of a woman running in trainers

    Credit: Getty Images

Make the most of the sunny spells and get outside during the day.

The more light you’re exposed to in the daytime, the more your body will desensitise itself to the effects of light at night.

‘Exposure to sunlight is one of the main cues for creating regular sleep-wake patterns,’ says Ivy Cheung, from Northwestern University in the US. Her study into sleep and daylight exposure found you can get 46 extra minutes’ sleep a night this way.

Put this into practice by ensuring a dark room come slumber time. Checking for all light sources – even the shards that creep from behind curtains.

    21. Draw the blinds earlier

A close-up of blinds on a sunny day

    Credit: Getty

Shade is an essential component of cooling down. So a simple hack to help you sleep in the heat is to close windows,  and draw curtains and blinds during the hottest parts of the day.

This will lower the room temperature considerably. Plus you’ll thank yourself for it later, when the sheets aren’t so sticky.

    22. Avoid caffeine and drink plenty of water

a cup of coffee on a wooden table

    Credit: Getty Images/EyeEm

Caffeinated drinks are known to raise our blood pressure and increase alertness.

Research has also shown caffeine to cause a rise in body temperature too, so it’s best to avoid caffeinated drinks after 6pm to get a better night’s sleep.

Drink plenty of water in the evening, and keep a glass by your bedside to stay hydrated throughout your sleep.

One study found that dehydration is linked to insomnia too. So be sure to sip some H20 throughout the day as a preventative measure.

    23. Say no to spice

    Three red chillies

    Credit: Getty

Science shows that what you eat before going to sleep affects the body more than you might think.

Studies have found that capsaicin (the active chemical in chillis) increases your body temperature. So it’s probably best to skip spicy food or meals in the run up to bedtime.

Anything too heavy or rich eaten within three hours of going to bed will also make you uncomfortable in the heat. With another study showing that the resulting acid reflux increases sleep problems.

    24. Avoid day-time naps

A woman napping on the sofa

    Credit: Getty

Hot weather often means many of us feel quite drowsy during the day. With this lethargy down to our body using more energy to regulate our core temperature.

Whilst a sunshine siesta might sound ideal, a study found that napping for over 30 minutes can prevent getting precious shut eye later.

This is because you’ll feel less tired and ready for sleep come bedtime.

    Get the Job

There are some specific things you can do to look thinner when going to that all-important job interview. This starts with the right attitude and a crisp, smart and well-thought out outfit. Read on for some specific ideas on how to dress your best.

Choose wisely. Dark colors, long jackets and monochromatic looks are your best choices. But be careful about too much black. You don't want to look like you're on your way to a funeral. Dark navy with or without a vertical pinstripe is a good choice in wool or, for warm weather, a rayon or silk blend. Jackets are great for covering up "borderline" full figures. Whatever you wear, make sure it fits you well and you are comfortable and relaxed in the garment.

Dress even dressier than the average candidate. Never look sloppy or mismatched for an interview. A suit, dress with jacket or formal pantsuit will give you that serious candidate edge. While it is true that the rules for interview attire have relaxed in recent years, for the larger woman, it is best to retain formality. Since others will be dressed more casually, you will appear even more serious and dedicated than the others.

Keep your buttons buttoned high around the neck and wear larger jewelry pieces, though do so sparingly. A pair of nice pearl or gem stone earrings with a bracelet or necklace is all you need to look elegant. Jewelry that is too small and dainty looks too delicate on a larger-sized woman and only draws attention to her plus-sized figure.

Select the right pair of shoes. Never wear an open toed-shoe to a job interview. Even designer sandals are off limits and will look frivolous. The shoes should be high quality leather and should have some heel but not too much. One or two inch heels are fine and will help you feel more grounded when you strut across the room. Flats are not appropriate for an interview.

Walk with confidence and a spring in your step. Even when a woman is overweight, if she carries herself with pride and confidence, she looks graceful and poised. You know in your heart that you have what it takes to do the job and that a number on a scale has nothing whatsoever to do with your ability to succeed at whatever you choose to do.

    Tip

Hold your head high when you walk. Smile. People create positive associations in their minds when they see and communicate with a smiling, enthusiastic person. It's okay to be a little sassy. Just make your attitude positive and embracing. Dress up, iron your clothes, put your hair up or style it neatly. Do wear panty hose, no bare legs. Wear vertical stripes to appear slimmer.

    Warning

Don't wear frilly or lacy blouses or dresses. Don't wear heels that are too high or shoes that are too casual. Don't look frumpy. Don't overdo your makeup. Don't have wild looking fingernails.

Do You Burn More Calories In The Heat? Here’s What Science Says

Most people don’t like it during the hot seasons. You have trouble sleeping, and the heat outside is simply unbearable. Lying naked on the floor with the A/C on is something you want to do. Well, unless you’re lying on some beach in Hawaii with your glass of mojito, these are not times you look forward to. Then there’s the group of people who intensify their workouts in hot weather. But is it worth it to do so? Are there any added benefits of working out in the heat, like increased calorie burn? Let’s find out.

Intermittent Fasting According To The Age

Why Do You Burn More Calories In The Heat?

Calorie burn is an essential aspect in modern times. In an age where conditions like obesity are prevalent, you can understand why this is so. What then happens when the temperature is high? Do you get to burn more calories?

Simply put, yes, you do. And this is not because you think the heat is burning away fats; science says you do. See, there are a lot of factors that affect how many calories you burn in a day. Some of them are within your sphere of control, and others are just not. One of the latter factors is total energy expenditure.

This is the sum of the energy your body uses up to digest food, in physical activities, and your resting energy expenditure. Your resting energy expenditure (REE) accounts for most of the calories burned, while physical activity is the most variable aspect (10). REE is what is responsible for your higher calorie burn in hot weather.

What exactly is REE? Assuming you’re feeling lazy and want to lie down all day, your body will still be working to keep you alive. The energy needed to sustain crucial life functions like breathing and heart rate is called resting energy expenditure, or REE.

This amount is given as calories and is responsible for the majority – 60 to 80 percent – of your daily calorie burn. Count 1 calorie per kilogram of body weight per hour to get a rough idea of what your REE is. For instance, a 121-pound woman has an REE of about 1320 calories, while a 154-pound man is about 1680 calories (3).

After getting that figure, factor in your activity levels. If you’re mostly sedentary, multiply the results by 1.2. For individuals who exercise 1-3 days a week, the factor is 1.375. It is 1.55 for those who exercise 6-7 days a week and 1.725 for highly active people. Finally, if you do endurance training, multiply the value by 1.9 (3).

A lot of factors can influence REE. These include age, sex, hormones, genetics, body composition, and body size, but the environment can also impact it (10). Your body will always need stable temperatures to function normally.

So when the temperatures in your surroundings spike, your body works to keep its temperature steady. Calories are then burned to fuel this process. So, scientifically speaking, extreme temperatures (heat or cold) increase your REE, and as a result, you burn more calories (10).

You’re probably wondering now how many more calories you burn in the heat. Well, there are no studies that point out an exact figure. However, researchers generally agree that there’s an extra calorie burning process when temperatures are high.

We’ve established that extreme temperatures equals more calorie burn. But extreme temperatures also include cold conditions. Let’s look at how these two conditions compare when it comes to burning more calories.

BetterMe app will provide you with a host of fat-frying fitness routines that’ll scare the extra pounds away and turn your body into a masterpiece! Get your life moving in the right direction with BetterMe!

How Many More Calories Do You Burn In The Heat Vs. In The Cold?

So do you burn more calories in the heat or when you’re cold? Next, we look at each scenario to determine the answer to this question.

    Calorie Burn In the Cold

It’s easy to think that your body works extra hard to keep you warm when it’s cold. To some extent, this is true, but the extra calorie burn occurs when you start shivering. Shivering is an indication that your body is responding to the low temperatures and is trying to raise your internal temperatures. This happens through negative feedback, where your body reacts to internal changes and tries to bring them back to normal (11).

How many calories you burn in this case will, however, depend on various factors. These include how long you’ve been out, type of clothing, and overall outside temperature. You should be careful, though, not to go into hypothermia. When this occurs, blood pumps away from your limbs towards your core to keep you warm (9).

Severe hypothermia may lead to stumbling, uncontrollable shivering, and difficulties in speaking (9). Dr. Kouri points out that shivering can use up to 400 calories an hour, depending on how you dress. This will, however, deplete your glycogen reserves, leading to fatigue (11).

Also contributing to the extra calorie burn is brown fat, which is a specific type of body fat that gets activated when you are cold. The body has a lot of ways it can use to acclimatize to cold temperatures apart from shivering. A month-long study by a U.S. Army researcher clearly showed this. In the study, 10 nude men were exposed to temperatures below the 50s for eight hours daily (4).

They shivered a lot at the beginning of the study until they just didn’t. By the 14th day, the men had stopped shivering, and it looked like their bodies were generating heat using alternative means. This has been linked to the presence of brown fat. When the temperatures are low, they are activated, leading to a domino of increased calorie burn and heat generation (4).

These reactions lead to higher energy expenditure when you’re in the cold and are actually cold. Being in the cold does not affect your calorie and energy expenditure; being cold does.

    running in 90 degree weather

    Calorie Burn In The Heat

It’s mid-summer, and you’re sweating. Somewhere in your mind, you’re asking yourself whether sweating burns calories. Maybe that’s the only thing keeping you going in the hot temperatures. What exactly happens in your body when it’s hot outside?

Body cells need a stable temperature of about 37 degrees Celsius to function correctly (2). Any drastic deviations from this temperature trigger your body to employ corrective mechanisms. Sweating is one of these measures; however, sweating by itself doesn’t raise the number of calories burned. It only cools your body.

To initiate these corrective measures, you’ll require some extra energy leading to the extra calorie burn. So do you burn more calories in the heat? You do. However, the number is believed to be less than that burn when you’re cold.

Both scenarios will lead to increased calorie consumption. Does this then mean it’s better to exercise in extreme weather conditions? Keep reading to find out.

Does Working Out In The Heat Burn More Calories?

For most people, summer signals a trip involving glasses of cold white wine to the Bahamas. This is the time to kick your workouts up a notch and get into shape for other people. However, the idea of working out in hot weather isn’t appealing by any standard. The heat leads to a lot of sweat that can make you uncomfortable.

All this, however, is just one side of the coin. Many questions have been raised concerning working out in extreme weather conditions- both hot and cold. Many people want to find out whether exercising in cold weather or running in the heat torches more calories. In this section, we focus on the relationship between heat and exercise.

So do you burn more calories when you work out in the heat? Are you doing your body any good? Are there concrete benefits that will make the whole process worthwhile? And now, for the moment of truth.

To understand and answer this question, we start with a few basics. When you exercise, your body will first use carbohydrates as an energy source, then fat. . As the intensity of the exercise increases, the mix leans more towards carbohydrates (2). For instance, running a 9-minute mile in hot conditions is more intense than in cool conditions. So you’d expect that more carbs will be used up in the heat due to this.

But heat affects your body in many ways. We, therefore, ask if our bodies’ fuel preferences also change in the heat. According to this study, exercising in the heat (about 40 degrees Celsius) increases muscle glycogen oxidation. Also, it decreases the whole body fat oxidation compared to the same exercise intensity at 20 degrees (2).

So do you burn more calories when you run in the heat? Based on the study above, you do. Now there’s one more question left- “How many more calories do you burn running in the heat compared to the cold?” Though there’s no substantial research that gives an exact figure, exercising in the cold may lead to more energy consumption.

Another thing that affects calorie consumption in hot conditions is the basal metabolic rate. The BMR is the measure of energy spent per unit time at rest or how fast you break down calories. All this, of course, is to fuel your body and keep your cells running. While it’s true your BMR will vary with activity levels, in theory, weather and climate can also affect it (10).

    sweating burns calories

Warmer weathers may slightly increase your BMR, helping you burn calories faster. This is largely because your body is working harder to keep you cool (10). Working out in the heat will increase your calorie burn but is not considered to be very safe. Some of the dangers associated with working out in the heat include:

    • Dehydration. You may end up being dehydrated since your body will be losing a lot of water through sweat without any replacement. If you find yourself getting thirsty, having a dry or sticky mouth, then it’s time to stop exercising and get hydrated (13).
    • Heat exhaustion. This occurs when you’ve been exposed to high temperatures for too long and is accompanied by dehydration. Symptoms include fatigue, confusion, profuse sweating, and muscle cramps. If you show these signs, get out of the heat, remove tight clothing, take a cool shower and drink plenty of fluids (6).
    • Heat Stroke. This is the most severe form of heat injury. It occurs due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures when you’re dehydrated. This eventually leads to the collapse of your body’s temperature control system. It’s indicated by nausea, seizures, disorientation, and fainting (7). This is a medical emergency, and you should call 911 if you suspect you or someone has a heat stroke.

Also, the increased calorie burn may not last long. This is mainly because our bodies are masters of adaptation. The longer you work under extreme temperatures, the more your body is conditioned to work less. The number of calories burned, therefore, naturally decreases.

Another important factor to consider before working out in hot conditions is perceived exertion. When you exercise in hot settings, you may think you’re training harder and burning more calories than you are. A study done by the American Council on Exercise and published in 2013 confirms this (8).

It aimed to obtain the difference between hot and regular yoga. The participants were but in both settings for 60-minute sessions each. Their core temperatures and heart rates were measured before, during, and after the test. At the end of the hot yoga session, the participants were all sweating, but there was no notable change in measured parameters (8).

They, however, considered themselves to be working harder based on the perceived exertion scale. This may have been because they reduced their efforts due to the warmer temperatures. The excess sweat probably made them think they had put in extra effort in the hot yoga session (8).

The point is, you may think you’re burning more calories when you sweat profusely despite that not being the case. So before going out to exercise in the heat, remember that being drenched in heat doesn’t mean you’re getting more calorie burn.

That’s that about working out in hot weather. If you decide to go ahead and try it, make sure you do it safely by using these tips.

How To Work Out Safely In Hot Weather?

After all, is said and done, working out in the heat has its pros and cons. If you intend to maximize and focus on the pros, try these tips to keep you safe when you’re working out.

Stay Hydrated But Use The Correct Fluids

The importance of water when it comes to being hydrated cannot be overstated. You should always have a bottle of water with you. However, if you plan to work out for more than 60 minutes, consider adding sports drinks to the mix to replenish your electrolytes.

These drinks contain vitamins and minerals that are crucial for rehydrating and replenishing your body. Also, the high sodium levels in these drinks may be good for you as it replaces used up sodium. Finally, never wait until you’re thirsty to drink and avoid alcoholic beverages as they promote weight loss.

    Watch All Temperatures

Always make sure you keep a close eye on weather forecasts and heat alerts. Before you go outdoors for your session, know what the temperatures will be for the time you’ll be out. For instance, in running events, flag warnings corresponding to heat and humidity are issued. Different flag colors represent different levels of caution, like yellow means careful monitoring is required, and in black flags, races are canceled.

Also, pay attention to your body’s temperature. If you stay exposed for too long and you feel like it’s only getting worse, then it’s time to get some shade.

    Get Acclimated

If you’re new at exercising out in the heat, you should take it slow as you begin. Ideally, it takes between one to two weeks for your body to adjust and adapt. Over time, gradually and steadily increase the intensity and length of your workout.

    Understand Your Fitness Level

Generally, if you’re new to working out or physically unfit, exercise extra caution in the heat. This is because your body may have a lower tolerance to high temperatures. You should take frequent breaks and reduce your exercise intensity.

    Don’t Stretch Past Your Limits

Always listen carefully to what your body is telling you. If you start exhibiting dizziness, nausea, or fatigue, then it’s time to take a break. There is no point in overworking your body in extreme temperatures just to get injured or sick and eventually stop working.

If your drill is all about high-intensity routines and the heat is unbearable, break it up to smaller multiple workouts. This gives your body time to rest and refuel without compromising your workout goals and fitness.

    Timing Is Key

What this simply means is to avoid the midday sun! Depending on where you live, the hottest periods in summer are considered between 10 a.m to 3 p.m, but the peak is midday. So it is advisable to work out in the early mornings or late evenings. This helps you stay energized and sleep better at night, respectively.

    Understand Your Medical Conditions

Some medical conditions or medications will make you more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses (5). Always talk to your doctor about precautions before you go out running in 90 degree weather.

    Dress Appropriately And Wear Sunscreen

These are essential preparations before going out to exercise. Light and loose clothing will keep you cooler. Also, avoid dark-colored clothes that absorb heat. Sunscreen will protect your body from sunburns and undesired eventualities like skin cancer.

    Conclusion

Working out is vital when it comes to staying fit. People are always looking for new ways to get the extra burn. One may argue that working out in extreme weather conditions is one of these ways.

Exercising in hot weather conditions will increase your calorie burn to some point. However, you should always take care not to expose yourself for too long in the heat. This is because uncontrolled exposure may lead to health hazards like heat strokes.

So before you go out in the heat, make sure you fully understand what you’re getting yourself into and take precautions.

    Topic Overview

A healthy body temperature is maintained by the nervous system. As the body temperature increases, the body tries to maintain its normal temperature by transferring heat. Sweating and blood flow to the skin (thermoregulation) help us keep our bodies cool. A heat-related illness occurs when our bodies can no longer transfer enough heat to keep us cool.

A high body temperature (hyperthermia) can develop rapidly in extremely hot environments, such as when a child is left in a car in the summer heat. Hot temperatures can also build up in small spaces where the ventilation is poor, such as attics or boiler rooms. People working in these environments may quickly develop hyperthermia.

High temperature caused by afever is different from a high body temperature caused by a heat-related illness. A fever is the body's normal reaction to infection and other conditions, both minor and serious. Heat-related illnesses produce a high body temperature because the body cannot transfer heat effectively or because external heat gain is excessive.

    Heat-related illnesses include:

    • Heat rash (prickly heat), which occurs when the sweat ducts to the skin become blocked or swell, causing discomfort and itching.
    • Heat cramps, which occur in muscles after exercise because sweating causes the body to lose water, salt, and minerals (electrolytes).
    • Heat edema (swelling) in the legs and hands, which can occur when you sit or stand for a long time in a hot environment.
    • Heat tetany (hyperventilation and heat stress), which is usually caused by short periods of stress in a hot environment.
    • Heat syncope (fainting), which occurs from low blood pressure when heat causes the blood vessels to expand (dilate) and body fluids move into the legs because of gravity.
    • Heat exhaustion (heat prostration), which generally develops when a person is working or exercising in hot weather and does not drink enough liquids to replace those lost liquids.
    • Heatstroke (sunstroke), which occurs when the body fails to regulate its own temperature and body temperature continues to rise, often to 40.6°C (105°F) or higher. Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Even with immediate treatment, it can be life-threatening or cause serious long-term problems.

Often, environmental and physical conditions can make it hard to stay cool. Heat-related illness is often caused or made worse by dehydration and fatigue. Exercising during hot weather, working outdoors, and overdressing for the environment increase your risk. Drinking alcohol also increases your risk of dehydration.

Many medicines increase your risk of a heat-related illness. Some medicines decrease the amount of blood pumped by the heart (cardiac output) and limit blood flow to the skin, so your body is less able to cool itself by sweating. Other medicines can alter your sense of thirst or increase your body's production of heat. If you take medicines regularly, ask your doctor for advice about hot-weather activity and your risk of getting a heat-related illness.

Other things that may increase your risk of a heat-related illness include:

    • Age. Babies do not lose heat quickly and they do not sweat effectively. Older adults do not sweat easily and usually have other health conditions that affect their ability to lose heat.
    • Obesity. People who are overweight have decreased blood flow to the skin, hold heat in because of the insulating layer of fat tissue, and have a greater body mass to cool.
    • Heat waves. People who live in cities are especially vulnerable to illness during a heat wave because heat is trapped by tall buildings and air pollutants, especially if there is a high level of humidity.
    • Chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart failure, and cancer. These conditions change the way the body gets rid of heat.
    • Travel to wilderness areas or foreign countries with high outdoor temperatures and humidity. When you go to a different climate, your body must get used to the differences (acclimate) to keep your body temperature in a normal range.

Most heat-related illnesses can be prevented by keeping the body cool and by avoiding dehydration in hot environments. Home treatment is usually all that is needed to treat mild heat-related illnesses. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke need immediate medical treatment.

Many things can affect how your body responds to a symptom and what kind of care you may need. These include:

    • Your age. Babies and older adults tend to get sicker quicker.
    • Your overall health. If you have a condition such as diabetes, HIV, cancer, or heart disease, you may need to pay closer attention to certain symptoms and seek care sooner.
    • Medicines you take. Certain medicines, such as blood thinners (anticoagulants), medicines that suppress the immune system like steroids or chemotherapy, or natural health products can cause symptoms or make them worse.
    • Recent health events, such as surgery or injury. These kinds of events can cause symptoms afterwards or make them more serious.
    • Your health habits and lifestyle, such as eating and exercise habits, smoking, alcohol or drug use, sexual history, and travel.

    Try Home Treatment

You have answered all the questions. Based on your answers, you may be able to take care of this problem at home.

    • Try home treatment to relieve the symptoms.
    • Call your doctor if symptoms get worse or you have any concerns (for example, if symptoms are not getting better as you would expect). You may need care sooner.

Exposure to a hot environment can cause many problems. Problems can be mild, like a heat rash, swelling in the hands or feet, or heat cramps. But heat can also lead to more dangerous situations like confusion, seizures, or passing out.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion may include:

    • Weakness, dizziness, or fatigue.
    • Headache.
    • Nausea.
    • Skin that is pale, cool, and moist.
    • Raised body temperature.

Heat exhaustion may occur when you are sweating a lot (typically, while working or exercising in hot weather) and do not drink enough to replace the fluids you've lost.

Symptoms of difficulty breathing can range from mild to severe. For example:

    • You may feel a little out of breath but still be able to talk (mild difficulty breathing), or you may be so out of breath that you cannot talk at all (severe difficulty breathing).
    • It may be getting hard to breathe with activity (mild difficulty breathing), or you may have to work very hard to breathe even when you're at rest (severe difficulty breathing).

    Severe trouble breathing means:

    • You cannot talk at all.
    • You have to work very hard to breathe.
    • You feel like you can't get enough air.
    • You do not feel alert or cannot think clearly.

    Moderate trouble breathing means:

    • It's hard to talk in full sentences.
    • It's hard to breathe with activity.

    Mild trouble breathing means:

    • You feel a little out of breath but can still talk.
    • It's becoming hard to breathe with activity.

    Severe trouble breathing means:

    • The child cannot eat or talk because he or she is breathing so hard.
    • The child's nostrils are flaring and the belly is moving in and out with every breath.
    • The child seems to be tiring out.
    • The child seems very sleepy or confused.

    Moderate trouble breathing means:

    • The child is breathing a lot faster than usual.
    • The child has to take breaks from eating or talking to breathe.
    • The nostrils flare or the belly moves in and out at times when the child breathes.

    Mild trouble breathing means:

    • The child is breathing a little faster than usual.
    • The child seems a little out of breath but can still eat or talk.

If you have symptoms of heat exhaustion, try the following first aid to cool off:

    • Stop what you are doing and rest.
    • Get out of the sun and heat.
    • Remove any extra clothing.
    • Spray or mist the body with cool water.
    • Use a fan if one is available.
    • Drink plenty of cool water or rehydration drinks.

Signs that heat exhaustion is becoming severe include:

    • Blurred vision.
    • Fast breathing and fast heart rate (more than 120 beats per minute when you are at rest).
    • Severe belly cramps.
    • Very heavy sweating (sweat is pouring off you and soaking through your clothes).

Some other symptoms of heat-related illness include:

    • Muscle twitching or spasms.
    • Muscles that feel hard and lumpy.
    • Sore muscles.

    Symptoms of heatstroke may include:

    • Feeling or acting very confused, restless, or anxious.
    • Trouble breathing.
    • Sweating heavily, or not sweating at all (sweating may have stopped).
    • Skin that is red, hot, and dry, even in the armpits.
    • Passing out.
    • Seizure.
    • Nausea and vomiting.

Heatstroke occurs when the body can't control its own temperature and body temperature continues to rise.

    Home Treatment

    Emergency first aid

Emergency first aid for heatstroke is needed immediately because this condition is life-threatening. After calling 911 or other emergency medical services, follow these first aid steps:

      • Move the person into a cool place, out of direct sunlight.
      • Remove the person's unnecessary clothing and place the person on his or her side to expose as much skin surface to the air as possible.
      • Cool the person's entire body by sponging or spraying cold water, and fan the person to help lower the person's body temperature. Watch for signs of rapidly progressing heatstroke, such as seizure, unconsciousness for longer than a few seconds, and moderate to severe difficulty breathing.
      • Apply ice packs in each armpit and on the back of the person's neck.
      • Check the person's rectal temperature, and try to cool it to 39°C (102°F) or lower as soon as possible. The longer the body is at a high temperature, the more serious the illness and the more likely it is that complications will develop. Temperatures taken by mouth or in the ear are not accurate in this emergency situation.
      • If a person has stopped breathing, begin CPR.
      • Do not give any medicine to reduce a high body temperature that can occur with heatstroke. Medicines may cause problems because of the body's response to heatstroke.
      • If the person is awake and alert enough to swallow, give the person fluids [1 L (32 fl oz ) to 2 L (64 fl oz) over 1 to 2 hours] for hydration. Most people with heatstroke have an altered level of consciousness and cannot safely be given fluids to drink. You may have to help. Make sure the person is sitting up enough so that he or she does not choke.

Home treatment for mild heat-related illness

When recognized in the early stages, most heat-related illnesses, such as mild heat exhaustion, can be treated at home.

      • Stop your activity, and rest.
      • Get out of direct sunlight and lie down in a cooler environment, such as shade or an air-conditioned area. Elevate your feet. Remove all unnecessary clothing.
      • Cool down by applying cool compresses or having a fan blow on you.
      • Drink rehydration drinks, juices, or water to replace fluids. Drink 2 L (2 qt) of cool fluids over 2 to 4 hours. You are drinking enough fluids if your urine is normal in colour and amount and you are urinating every 2 to 4 hours. Total rehydration with oral fluids usually takes about 36 hours, but most people will begin to feel better within a few hours.
      • Rest for 24 hours, and continue fluid replacement with a rehydration drink. Rest from any strenuous physical activity for 1 to 3 days.

Heat syncope (fainting) usually does not last long and improves when you lie down to a flat position. It is helpful to lie in a cooler environment.

Heat edema (swelling) is treated with rest and by elevating your legs. If you are standing for a long time in a hot environment, flex your leg muscles often so that blood does not pool in your lower legs, which can lead to heat edema and fainting.

Heat cramps are treated by getting out of the heat and replacing fluids and salt. If you are not on a salt- (sodium-) restricted diet, eat a little more salt, such as a few nuts or pretzels. Do not use salt tablets, because they are absorbed slowly and can cause irritation of the stomach. Try massaging and stretching your cramped muscles.

Heat rash (prickly heat) usually gets better and goes away without treatment. Antihistamines may help if you are having problems with itching. Keep areas clean and dry to help prevent a skin infection. Do not use baby powder while a rash is present. The powder can build up in the skin creases and hold moisture, allowing the growth of bacteria that may cause infection. Dress in as few clothes as possible during hot weather. Keep your home, especially sleeping areas, cool.

Symptoms to watch for during home treatment

Call your doctor if any of the following occur during home treatment:

    • A seizure occurs.
    • Decreased mental alertness develops.
    • Shortness of breath develops.
    • Symptoms become more severe or frequent.

    Prevention

The following tips may help prevent a heat-related illness. Be aware of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and the warning signs of dehydration.

      • Practice heat safety measures when you are physically active in hot weather. This is especially important for outdoor workers and military personnel. Avoid strenuous activity in hot, humid weather or during the hottest part of the day (between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.). Use caution during your physical activity in the heat if you have health risks.
      • Drink plenty of water before, during, and after you are active. This is very important when it's hot out and when you do intense exercise. Fluids such as rehydration drinks, juices, or water help replace lost fluids, especially if you sweat a lot.
        • Drink on schedule. Two hours before exercising, drink 750 mL (24 fl oz) of fluid. Drink 500 mL (16 fl oz) of fluid 15 minutes before exercising. Continue drinking 250 mL (8 fl oz) of fluid every 15 minutes while exercising.
        • Drink rehydration drinks, which are absorbed as quickly as water but also replace sugar, sodium, and other nutrients. Eat fruits and vegetables to replace nutrients.
        • Check your urine. Urine should be clear to pale yellow, and there should be a large amount if you are drinking adequately. You should urinate every 2 to 4 hours during an activity when you are staying properly hydrated. If your urine output decreases, drink more fluids.
      • Do not spend much time in the sun. If possible, exercise or work outside during the cooler times of the day. Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing in hot weather, so your skin can cool through evaporation. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or use an umbrella for shade.
      • Dermatologists strongly recommend a sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection and a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more if you and your child are out in the sun. Use a lip balm with SPF 30 as well. Make sure to use products approved by the Canadian Dermatology Association.
      • Stay cool as much as possible. Take frequent breaks in the shade, by a fan, or in air-conditioning. Cool your skin by spraying water over your body. Take a cool bath or shower 1 or 2 times a day in hot weather.
      • If you have to stand for any length of time in a hot environment, flex your leg muscles often. This prevents blood from pooling in your lower legs, which can lead to fainting. To prevent swelling (heat edema), wear support hose to stimulate circulation while standing for long periods of time.
      • Do not drink alcohol. It increases blood flow to the skin and increases your risk of dehydration.

Staying physically fit can help you acclimate to a hot environment. Before you travel to or work in a hotter environment, use gradual physical conditioning. This takes about 8 to 14 days for adults. Children require 10 to 14 days for their bodies to acclimate to the heat. If you travel to a hot environment and are not accustomed to the heat, cut your usual outside physical activities in half for the first 4 to 5 days. Gradually increase your activities after your body adjusts to the heat and level of activity.

Be aware that when the outdoor humidity is greater than 75%, the body's ability to lose heat by sweating is decreased. Other ways of keeping cool need to be used. The heat index for each day alerts people of the risk for a heat-related illness in relation to the air temperature and humidity of that day. Direct exposure to the sun can increase the risk of a heat-related illness on days when the heat index is high.

People who have had heatstroke in the past may be more sensitive to the effects of heat in the first few months following the illness, but they do not have long-term problems.

    Preparing For Your Appointment

To prepare for your appointment, see the topic Making the Most of Your Appointment.

You can help your doctor diagnose and treat your condition by being prepared to answer the following questions:

    Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about fashion for women over 50 and 50+ fashion in summer. If you don’t see your question answered below, let us know in the comments!

    Q. How to choose swimsuits in your fifties?

    A. We could not round off our summer outfit styles for women over 50 without sharing at least one swimsuit look! If you have summer plans of lounging by the pool or visiting the beach then you will definitely want to take note of this ensemble. This swimsuit is super flatter with a square neckline, polka dot print, and streamlining quality. Over the top, this light swimsuit coverup is sheer without being revealing and looks fabulous when paired with a straw hat and cute sunnies.

    Via

    Q. What should I wear after 50?

    A. Wear whatever looks best on you. Really. Whether you are just starting to pay attention to fashion or you are an old hand, most of us have some type of an idea of what looks best on our bodies. We know that low-cut jeans don’t do our muffin tops any favors. We know that certain colors make our skin look radiant while others make us look gray and sallow. Start there. Pay attention to cuts and fabrics. Opt for quality whenever possible. Avoid fast fashion. Find out if you look better in cool colors or warm colors. These are puzzle pieces that will help you continually refine your fashion choices as a mature woman.

As a hard and fast rule, don’t look to what 20-year-olds are wearing. Find icons in the fashion or celebrity world that you can relate to age-wise and take note of their style. Embrace your natural affinities, whether you love chunky costume jewelry or Midwestern styles, and look to incorporate it in your daily attire without going too overboard.

    Q. How can I dress over 50 and overweight?

    A. Being overweight at any age can be a challenge. Don’t let it get you down. The goal doesn’t change. Find clothes that flatter your body as it is and highlight your best features. If you want to appear slimmer, solid colors are a safe bet, along with darker colors. But don’t feel like you are stuck wearing black, especially in the summertime. Look to enhance your complexion with flattering colors and opt for quality fabrics that skim over your figure and streamline your silhouette.

Avoid baggy clothes, as tempting as they may be. It is better to have a well-fitting outfit than a super baggy tee shirt that we hope makes us look slimmer, but in fact, only adds weight to our silhouette and does nothing for our natural attributes. Take pride in your appearance and invest in yourself and you won’t be worried about what people think of you; they’ll be too busy asking for fashion advice and styling tips!

You can find more detailed ideas in our earlier post on Fashion Tips For Plus Size Women Over 50.

    Q. What should you not wear after 50?

    A. While there is no rule that says you can no longer wear certain styles or pieces when you reach a certain age, if you want to feel and look your best, there are obviously some things you may want to say sayonara to. Overly juvenile pieces, skin-tight or very revealing clothing, sloppy attire, too-short shorts… these are all things will take away from an elegant, sophisticated appearance. Kiddie styles and childish prints are an obvious no-no. Crop tops, mini dresses, and other teenage-girl picks are examples of styles you should steer clear of.

    Q. How should you wear jeans in your 50s?

    A. It is all about fit and cut. Mid-rise jeans with tapered or straight legs are solid choices. Avoid jeans that have rips in them or bedazzlement. Low-cut jeans, skinny jeans, or bootcut jeans are all iffy options that you should be cautious with. Go for solid colors like black or white. If you wear blue denim, it’s best to opt for a dark wash.

Just when you want to look your best for the summer, hot and humid weather often means that your ankles become puffy or your tummy feels bloated due to water retention. Hot weather tends to increase fluid retention, so it is a good idea to work out how to get rid of water retention so that the discomfort of a bloated stomach or puffy ankles don’t ruin your summer.

How to get rid of water retention in the summer

Heat causes blood vessels and capillaries to expand and dilate which allows more fluid to fill the spaces between tissues. The resulting bloating, usually in your abdomen, ankles or feet, can be uncomfortable and means you feel less than lovely when you want to relax and have fun in your summer dress or bikini.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take, along with herbal water retention tablets, to reduce the symptoms of water retention caused by the heat.

    Think about your diet

Of course, holidays are a great time for treating yourself, but it is essential not to overindulge if you suffer from water retention. Too much exotic food or alcohol place a great deal of pressure on the digestive system and could cause undesirable symptoms such as heartburn and indigestion, as well as causing you to retain fluid.

Sampling local delicacies and authentic cuisine whilst you’re on holiday is one of the delights of visiting another country, but be careful what you choose. As tasty as local foods such as olives, anchovies, pizza, Halloumi cheese or salted fish may be, they are high in sodium, which is a major contributor to fluid retention.

Rather than reaching for olives or other salty snacks, choose foods or drinks that contain natural anti-inflammatories such as ginger, blueberries, parsley, raspberries and cucumber.

When choosing fruits and vegetables, be mindful that some are more likely to cause bloating than others. For example, broccoli, kale and cauliflower are cruciferous vegetables and can cause gas, which could exacerbate the feeling of bloatedness.

Stick to water to reduce fluid retention

Cocktails and fizzy drinks are always appealing in the summer, especially when you’re on holiday, but, alcohol and carbonated beverages will exacerbate or even cause uncomfortable bloating so it’s best to try and stick to plain or naturally-flavoured water. Long flights can dehydrate you very quickly, so make sure you sip water on your journey.

When you’re travelling, it’s easy to forget to drink enough. A great solution is to carry a water bottle with you so that you can always top up on the go.

Use exercise to beat the bloat

When you’re on holiday, you probably want to relax. But although it may be tempting to sit in the shade or lounge on a sunbed all day, exercise is important for reducing localised bloating and improving circulation to help get rid of water retention.

Long periods of being sedentary are particularly bad for swollen feet and ankles, so keep moving to avoid having to squeeze bloated, puffy feet into your sandals in the evening.

When you exercise, you lose more water through sweat and need to replenish your fluids, so make sure you drink plenty of water during and after your workout or run. Exercising in the early morning or evening rather than in the middle of the day will keep you cooler, as will wearing light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing.

Use the landscape to your advantage to help get rid of water retention:

    • If you’re on the beach, try swimming every few hours to refresh and keep your circulation pumping. Just remember to always re-apply sun-cream after a swim, or any exercise that makes you perspire, and at least every two hours to protect and keep your skin moisturised.
    • If you are on holiday in the countryside, enjoy a walk to soak up the sights and ease fluid retention
    • If you are on a city break, think about walking between the sights rather than catching a bus or cab.

How can I dress for unbearable how to dress for hot weather when you re fat but still find creativity in my closet?

I identify with this inquiry so deeply it resonates in the very marrow of my bones. Heat waves are abounding in major cities around the world, New York included. My armpits are never not moist. My rosacea is never not acting up. My hair is never not housing search org as the most cumbersome of neck sweaters.

    30% Naked? I Gotchu

Where state of michigan unemployment fax number nudity is concerned, might I suggest a sleeveless shirt and shorts?

For example: layer this short-sleeved button down shirt over this bikini top and wear this tarrant county jail release on the bottom. Voila! OR, wear this on-sale one-piece with these easy breezy linen pants. Flips flops optional but encouraged.

What outfit tricks do you have up your navel when it comes to staying cool while still getting dressed?

Do Fat People Stay Warmer Than Thin People?

Santa <b>How to dress for hot weather when you re fat</b> Hasloo Group Production Studio/Shutterstock </figure>At the yearly Rottnest Channel Swim in Western Australia, participants often smear their bodies with animal fat for insulation against the 70-degree water. But their own body fat also helps to keep them warm, like an extra layer of clothing beneath the skin. When scientists studied aspects of the event in 2006, they found that swimmers with a greater body mass index (BMI) appear to be at much lower risk of getting hypothermia.<p>The same effect has been demonstrated in hospitals where patients who’ve suffered cardiac arrest are treated with “therapeutic hypothermia” to stave off brain injury and inflammation. Studies have shown that it takes longer to induce hypothermia in obese patients than in their leaner counterparts. The extra fat seems to insulate the body’s core.</p><p>Under certain conditions, though, overweight people might feel colder than people of average weight. That’s because the brain combines two signals—the temperature inside the body and the temperature on the surface of the skin—to determine when it’s time to constrict blood vessels (which limits heat loss through the skin) and trigger shivering (which generates heat). And since subcutaneous fat traps heat, an obese person’s core will tend to remain warm while his or her skin cools down. According to Catherine O’Brien, a research physiologist with the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, it’s possible that the lower skin temperature would give fatter people the sense of being colder overall.</p><p>But O’Brien points out that many other factors beyond subcutaneous fat help determine the rate at which we chill. Smaller people, who have more surface area compared to the total volume of their bodies, lose heat more quickly. (It’s often said that women feel colder than men; average body size may play a part.) A more muscular physique may also offer some protection against hypothermia, partly because muscle tissue generates lots of heat. “We have a joke around here that the person who’s best-suited for cold is fit and fat,” says O’Brien.</p><p><em>This article originally appeared in the January 2014 issue of</em> Popular Science.</p><p>This article originally appeared on Popular Science</p><p><img src=
