A Local Wells Fargo Bank in Georgia Refused to Cash My Hurricane María Insurance Check Because It Was Written in Spanish

On Friday, Latino Rebels received the following account from a Puerto Rican woman who asked us to not use her name. Here is what she wrote. (FYI, we had reached out to Wells Fargo last weekend when we found out about her story.)

I live in Peachtree Corners, Georgia.

I currently own a condo in Puerto Rico, which is managed by my 73-year-old mother, who lives about 2-3 miles from my condo. As you know, in September of 2017, Hurricane María took a devastating stroll throughout our beautiful island, leaving millions of dollars in damages and not to mention the amount of lives it took along the way.

My condo and property management had some damage. Since my damage was not as devastating, compared to others who lost everything, I decided to “take my number” and wait my turn until the HOA management company processed our claim with the insurance company.

I didn’t get my insurance check until last Saturday, February 16, 2019. I was so excited to finally deposit the check and send the money to my mother so she can proceed with the necessary repairs.

As a loyal customer of Wells Fargo (11 years to be exact), I went to the branch close to my residence in Georgia, and used the drive-thru option to deposit the check. The nice clerk sees the check and says: “I need to confirm with my manager, since this is a big check that’s written in Spanish.”

A few minutes she comes back and says: “Everything is great! Thanks and have a wonderful weekend!” So I deposit the check and head back home. Once I get home, I check my account via the Wells Fargo app and see the money in “pending” status with a “+” sign by the amount. Everything looks great!

About an hour later, I get a call from Wells Fargo. “Please call back.” No extension number, no last name. I’ve tried to communicate and was not successful. I got worried so decided to check the app again when I see the amount has been “reversed.”

I think: “This couldn’t BOUNCE!” So I decide to go back to the branch.

As I am on my way thinking that the check bounced, I call my mother in Puerto Rico to have her ready on the phone.

The assistant manager comes to me because the manager “is not available to speak right now.” She proceeds to ask for my ID. She has the check in her hands.

The assistant manager said something about how the bank cannot accept the check “because it is in Spanish.

“You are in an English-speaking country,” she says. “We need the check in English.”

This is what I say: “Well, the check is current, signed from an insurance company. The things you need to pay attention are the date, routing number, and account number attached to the check. Why does it need to be in English? I don’t understand.”

“Our computer doesn’t read Spanish,” the assistant manager says. “If the check bounces, you will be in trouble.”

My mother is hearing this conversation over the phone and asks to speak with the lady. I tell the lady. The lady’s response?

“I can’t speak to her. I don’t speak Spanish. And we don’t have a Spanish speaker on staff,” she says as she waves her hands at me.

My response: “Do you know how insulting this is? First of all we are fully bilingual. She probably speaks better English than you.”

My mom disconnects the call. She is furious.

My frustration continues.

“Let me get this straight, you are saying that Wells Fargo, a nationwide multi-billion company doesn’t have the software to translate any check from any language? If that is the case, why I could see the money deposited in my account in the first place? If it couldn’t read the check, it wouldn’t made it that far, right? Do you see the check says this is from Hurricane María? I’ve been waiting for this since 2017.”

I then ask for the check and my ID back.

“If you can have a check in English we will be happy to deposit it,” she tells me.

When I grab the check, I see it was endorsed in the back then crossed over with blue ink pen.

I leave the Wells Fargo branch.

On Tuesday, February 19, my mother gets on hold with the manager of my HOA in Puerto Rico. She explains the situation (which I emailed them as well that same Saturday, including the picture of the endorsed voided check). The HOA says they need to run this by their lawyers because looks like I’ve deposited the check, and I am asking for another one. Also, we’ve explore the idea of them cutting the check on my mother’s name directly so she can deposit it there instead of waiting for it to come to Georgia.

Finally, we get the answer from the lawyers. First, they cannot cut the check on my mother’s name. Second, they request the voided check back. Third, once they receive the check, and it’s proven was not cleared, then they will send another check back.

Meanwhile, Wells Fargo calls me to apologize for the situation.

“But if you have the check in English…”

I cut him in the middle of the speech (quite annoyed of course). I tell him what I have to do now, just because Wells Fargo simply cannot read Spanish.

His answer is this: “Damn!”

And I disconnect the call. Suddenly, for no reason nor relevance whatsoever Wells Fargo emails me to let me know that “we’ve increased your daily purchase limit.” That does nothing. If they would’ve said “we will work hard to improve our software to read every language,” I (and millions of other Americans) would be happy.

Until that happens, who cares about increasing the daily limit when we get limited in deposit money to begin with?

I’m sharing this story because I think I am not the only who has gone through this.

Thanks for your awesome attention and interest.

Editor’s Note: We did reach out to the Wells Fargo’s customer service Twitter about this story and this is what the bank told us on February 22 via Twitter DM. We did let Wells Fargo know that the customer would be writing about her experience at the local branch.

There’s no need to wait in line. Enjoy the convenience of direct deposit and save time.

How direct deposit works

Direct deposit is the electronic transfer of payments from your employer or other payer to your Virginia Credit Union checking or savings account. Funds are transferred through the Automated Clearing House (ACH).

Examples of payments that can be deposited

  • Your pay from any employer who offers direct deposit
  • Social security, retirement benefits and payments from federal or state government agencies
  • Tax refunds
  • Investment income or any other payments sent electronically through the Automated Clearing House (ACH)

How to sign up for direct deposit

Your payroll office or another payer will ask you to complete a form to authorize the direct deposit and give instructions about where to send your payments. Here is the information you will need about Virginia Credit Union:

Virginia Credit Union
P.O. Box 90010
Richmond, VA 23225-9010
804-323-6800 or 800-285-6609

Your checking or savings account # : _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _

Note: You must use your specific checking or savings account number, which can be found on your account statement, rather than your member number.

  • For a direct deposit to checking, use your 10-digit checking account number.
A close up of the numbers on a check.
  • For a direct deposit to savings, please contact Member Services for the correct savings account format.

You may print and complete the appropriate direct deposit form and send it to your payroll office or other payer. If your direct deposit will go to your checking account, they may want a voided check as well. Your payroll office or other payer may ask for additional information.

Contact us for help with direct deposit, or to request a direct deposit form by mail. Tell us who the payer will be so we can send you the correct form. For government payments, please contact the paying agency directly to authorize the direct deposit1.

Tax Refund Direct Deposit

If you expect a refund when you file your federal and state income taxes, it's easy for you to directly deposit these funds into your credit union checking or savings account.

Direct deposit is safer, easier and you get the money faster than having a check sent by postal mail.

To direct deposit your refund, go to the refund portion of your tax return:

  • Enter Virginia Credit Union’s Bank Routing Number: 251082615
  • Select the account type: checking or savings
  • Enter your checking or savings VACU account number (not your member number)
    • For a deposit to checking, use the account number at the bottom center of your personal checks, including any leading zeros.
A close up of the numbers on a check.
    • For a deposit to savings, please contact Member Services at 804-323-6800 for the correct account format.

Please note: Failure to use the correct account information for direct deposit may delay or prevent the deposit of your refund.

Tip: Using IRS Form 8888 - Direct Deposit of Refund allows taxpayers to deposit their refund into as many as three different accounts for both paper and electronically filed tax returns.

You can if your employer allows that option. Check with your payroll office to find out if it is available.

If your employer does not offer that option, you can sign up for our automatic transfer program to make regular distributions to your various credit union accounts and loans.

Your employer will need an authorization form directing them where to deposit the money, including the credit union's routing number (251082615) and your account number.

For new direct deposits, the preferred format is a 10-digit number. If you have a 12-digit account number, it can be converted to a 10-digit number by removing the first two zeros.

Some direct deposit forms are listed on our website. Please check with your employer to obtain the appropriate form. They may also require a voided check if your deposit will go into your checking account.

A 10-digit account number is the preferred format, but your 12-digit account number still works. (Your 12-digit number can be converted to a 10-digit number by removing the first two zeros.)

VACU's routing number is: 251082615

This depends on the processing time required by your employer or payer. Check with them to learn what to expect. Some payments may take up to 60 days to begin.

For Social Security payments, direct deposit could start within 30 days if you sign up with us through the QuickStart program. Complete the QuickStart Application and return it to us.

If you are receiving direct deposit of your pay, your employer will give you a direct deposit advice with your pay stub rather than a paycheck. You can use our 24-hour QuikLine Phone Banking or Online Banking to verify receipt of your deposit. Your deposit will also appear on your monthly credit union statement.

Check with the payer to find out the easiest way to do this. Or you can print and complete the appropriate direct deposit form available on our website. Check with your employer to find out what form(s) are required.

Send it to your payroll office or the company or organization that makes the deposit. It may take several pay periods, depending on the payer.

On the morning of every business day, we will review your account to determine if you received an electronic direct deposit after the prior business day's nightly processing. If a direct deposit is received by 9:00 a.m. local time where your account is located (noted on your account statement), we will calculate a new account balance that includes the pending direct deposit(s), less any pending debits. If this newly calculated balance covers transactions that resulted in overdraft or non-sufficient funds (NSF) fees, or Overdraft Protection transfer or advance fees, during the prior business day's nightly processing, we will waive or refund those fees. We may also reverse returned item (non-sufficient funds/NSF) decisions. Overdraft Rewind® does not reverse the transfer or advance of funds from a linked Overdraft Protection account. The bank receives most direct deposits through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network before 9:00 a.m. Direct deposits include your salary, pension, Social Security, or other regular monthly income electronically deposited through the ACH network by your employer or an outside agency. Other deposits, such as check(s), cash, or account transfers received after our nightly account processing, are not included for purposes of Overdraft Rewind.

Cashing old checks: How long is a check good for?

How long is a check good for?

Banks don’t have to accept checks that are more than 6 months (180 days) old. That’s according to the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), a set of laws governing commercial exchanges, including checks. However, banks can still choose to accept your check.

Sometimes banks will still process an old check as long as the institution believes the funds are good. A Federal Reserve regulation says a bank does not have to deposit a check if it has reason to doubt that it will be able to collect the money from the paying bank.

The rules are a bit different for certified checks, U.S. Treasury checks and money orders.

How long is a certified check good for?

The UCC guidelines that allow banks to deny checks after six months do not apply to certified checks. However, a certified check that sits for too long may be subject to state abandoned property laws.

How long is a check issued by the U.S. Treasury good for?

Checks issued by the U.S. Treasury (such as federal tax refund checks) are void one year after the issue date. You must contact the IRS for a reissue if you find an old refund check sitting in the back of your desk drawer.

How long is a money order good for?

Money orders don’t expire, but cashing in a money order late might cost you. The company that issued the money order could charge a non-refundable fee that’s taken from the check amount if you don’t cash the money order within one to three years.

Watch out for ‘deposit item returned’ fee

If you try cashing old checks that bounce, you may be responsible for a “deposit item returned” fee. The fee varies from bank to bank.

At Santander Bank, you’ll generally pay $15 per check, while at Wells Fargo and Bank of America, the fee is $12. The fee might even be higher for international checks. Plus, the person who wrote the bounced check might be charged a non-sufficient funds fee from his or her own bank that could be as high as $35.

If the stale check is a nominal amount that doesn’t surpass the returned-check fee and you’re unable to contact the check writer for a new check or to make sure his account is still active, your best bet may be to forfeit the check and call it a learning experience.

You may be able to cash voided checks

The writer of your stale check may have specified “void after 90 days” or something similar on the check when he issued it to you. This doesn’t necessarily mean your bank won’t cash the check after that period, though.

A court decision in the case of Aliaga Medical Center, S.C. v. Harris Bank N.A. ruled that banks can retrieve funds after the issuer’s requested void period unless that person specifically instructed his bank not to honor the check after that time frame.

Still, if the check was a gift from a relative who’s living on a fixed income, you might be better off honoring her request. You could end up responsible for the deposit item return fee if the reason she wrote the notice was because the funds would no longer be available after those 90 days.

Give the check writer a heads-up

Someone who wrote a personal check is probably not prepared for the hit his checking account balance will take if you cash it months later.

Call or text the person to let him know your intent, especially if the check was issued by a friend or family member. Also, double-check that he hasn’t switched financial institutions or opened a new account before you head to your bank.

Depending on how old the check is, you may want to ask if the person will write you a new check altogether. Despite the awkwardness of revealing your check-cashing mistake, asking for an up-to-date check can save you time at the teller’s desk and keep you from paying pesky bank fees if the check is returned.

Banking / Checking Account

Opting to use direct deposit instead of requesting a paper check has advantages such as convenience, security and reliability. It’s also popular. According to a 2020 survey by the American Payroll Association, almost 94% of more than 34,000 respondents stated they receive their paychecks by direct deposit.

Wells Fargo customers can also take advantage of this payment method. Discover how to set up Wells Fargo direct deposit to better manage your finances.

What Is Direct Deposit?

Direct deposit is a simple and cost-effective way for employers, government institutions and other agencies to pay you electronically using your bank account information and your bank’s ABA routing number.

Good To Know

A routing number is a nine-digit code that identifies your bank. You can find it printed next to your account number on the bottom of your checks or ask your bank for the number. Wells Fargo also has an online routing number lookup that gives you your routing number after you answer just a few questions.

The following types of payments qualify for direct deposit:

  • Paychecks from your employer
  • Benefits from the federal government, including Supplemental Security Income, veterans benefits, Social Security and civil service checks
  • Benefits from state government agencies, such as pensions, retirement funds or unemployment checks
  • Investment income, like profits from certificates of deposit, mutual funds and annuities

How To Set Up Direct Deposit With Wells Fargo

Follow these steps to set up Wells Fargo direct deposit:

  1. Use the pre-filled Wells Fargo direct deposit form.Sign in to your Wells Fargo account and select the account you want the direct deposits to go in. With this method, Wells Fargo will automatically enter your account number, routing number and account type in the appropriate fields on the form.
  2. Fill out the Wells Fargo direct deposit form by hand. Download the blank Direct Deposit/Automatic Payment Information Form. Manually write in your name, account number and routing number and select the account type.
  3. Print out the completed form and give it to your payroll department or HR representative. You might have to fill out a separate direct deposit form for the organization’s records or provide a Wells Fargo voided check to process your request. Here’s how to get a Wells Fargo voided check: Remove a check from your Wells Fargo checkbook and write “VOID” across the check in large letters, but make sure not to write over the numbers at the bottom of the check.
  4. Verify that the direct deposit has taken effect. Log in to view your account or set up free alerts within your account that notify you when the first direct deposit posts. It might take one to two pay periods before the process is complete.

With direct deposit from Wells Fargo, your money will be automatically deposited and available the same day. If you have questions, call Wells Fargo customer service, which is available 24/7, at 800-869-3557.

Wells Fargo Direct Deposit Time: When Does It Go Through?

Wells Fargo direct deposit times can vary — there is no specified Wells Fargo direct deposit time, nor does the bank provide a precise amount of time it takes for a direct deposit to post to your account. Wells Fargo does, however, state it will add the direct deposit amount to your available balance on the same day it receives the deposit. If deposited after the cutoff time or on a nonbusiness day, it will be credited on the next business day.

You can sign up for online alerts and set up direct deposit notifications, which will notify you when your money is available.

Does Wells Fargo Process Direct Deposits on the Weekend?

Wells Fargo will process direct deposits on the same business day they’re made. Wells Fargo’s business days are Monday through Friday, except for holidays.

How Long Does It Take for a Wells Fargo Direct Deposit To Start?

Wells Fargo will process your direct deposits once the payer begins submitting them. So, the amount of time it takes for your Wells Fargo direct deposit to take effect depends on how quickly the payer (the organization paying you) takes to process your direct deposit request. This process usually takes one to two pay periods, but Wells Fargo warns this could take one to two months.

Does Wells Fargo Offer Early Direct Deposit?

Wells Fargo does not offer early direct deposit. All direct deposits received by 8 p.m. PT on a business day are processed and credited that day.

Plus, the person who wrote the bounced check might be charged a non-sufficient funds fee from his or her own bank that could how to get a voided check from wells fargo as high as $35.

Depending on how old the check is, how to pay electricity bill on amazon website may want to ask if the person will write you a new check altogether. Despite the awkwardness of revealing your check-cashing mistake, asking is aba transit the same as routing number an up-to-date check can save you time at the teller’s desk and keep you from paying pesky bank fees if the check is returned.

A Local Wells Fargo Bank in Georgia Refused to Cash My Hurricane María Insurance Check Because It Was Written in Spanish

On How to get a voided check from wells fargo, Latino Rebels received the following account from a Puerto Rican woman who asked us to not use her name.

Since my how to get a voided check from wells fargo was not as devastating, compared to others who lost everything, I decided to “take my number” and wait my turn until the HOA management company processed our claim with the insurance company.

I got worried so decided to check the app amazon affiliate hong kong when I see the amount has been “reversed.”

I think: “This couldn’t BOUNCE!” So I decide to go back to the branch.

As I am on my way thinking that the check bounced, I call my mother in Puerto Rico to have her ready on the phone.

The assistant manager comes to me how to get a voided check from wells fargo the manager “is not available to speak right now.” She proceeds to ask for my ID.

Why does corolla beach rentals 2018 need to be in English?

Third, once they receive the check, and it’s proven was not cleared, then they will send pnc investments phone number check back.

Until that happens, who cares about increasing the daily limit when we get northwest federal credit union car loan payment in deposit money to begin with?

I’m sharing this story because I think I am not the only who has gone through this.

Thanks for your awesome attention and interest.

Editor’s Note: We did reach out to the Wells Fargo’s customer service Twitter about this story and this is what the bank told us on February 22 via Twitter DM. We did let Wells Fargo know that the customer would be writing about her experience at the local branch.

  • Is a school ID a valid form to cash a check at Wells Fargo?

My information may be out of date but I’ll share it anyway. The United States passed several anti-money laundry laws after 9–11. One specified the type of identification that financial institutions could use and guidelines to guard against financial crimes. This applies to all institutions, not just Wells Fargo. As a primary source of identification you will need a government issues id, such as a driver’s license, state id, valid military id, or passport. The id must also be current or up to date. They will then require a secondary form of identification which would be something like a credit card, school id, employee id, concealed firearms permit, or any of the primary identifications listed above could also be used. They must also be current if they are date stamped. These will always be required if you are not a bank customer with an account. If you are an account holding customer then bank employees can use their knowledge about your identity as a valid form of id. For example, if you know a customer really well, have checked their identification several times, and are confident they are who they claim to be then you do not need to require a primary and secondary form of identification. This isn’t practiced very often because it puts the employee at risk if the check is fraudulent.
  • How do you make payments to Wells Fargo by check?

If your paying a loan of any kind know matter what bank, the payee is always the name of the bank. On the memo you can write your loan number or whatever description you would like
  • How long does it take for a personal check to check credit score on chase app cleared at Wells Fargo bank?

Fast. Depends on where (which bank & what location) the deposit occurs. Many of us remember the days when the physical checks were couriered to the issuing bank. Every night, millions of checks were encoded, sorted, shipped, and cleared between banks. As a college kid in the 70’s (pre-ATM), I knew I could float a check for a couple of days or more before my out-of-town (hometown) how to get a voided check from wells fargo would get the check written for Cash at the Piggly Wiggly in my college town. If I screwed up the timing, the hometown banker called my dad to cover the check for a day or so. All that work for $20 cash…No longer true. With electronic remote capture (bank imaging systems), the checks (“items”) are moving same day. Often they move instantaneously, but maybe with one day of float. It is tough to enjoy that float time (or kite checks between several banks, if you are really broke). High-value checks (around first national first convenience bank app or more) have a little bit of extra handling to make certain the writer has enough money in the issuing account to cover it.Treasury management throughout the US banking system will soon be same-day. You’d need an account at an uber-small credit union in a remote corner of America to pick up a couple of days of float.
  • How long does it take to find out your pre-approval home loan from Wells Fargo?

Wells Fargo issues three types of approval letters. These vary by the level of analysis they perform on the file prior to issuing the letter and therefor the level of certainty the letter provides to the borrower and to potential sellers that the loan financing will come through. The types of letters are -Pre-qualificationGives you an option of your home price range and estimated closing costs based on non-verified information you provided. Doesn’t require a full mortgage applicationCan often be issued same-day through a Loan Officer or an Online ApplicationPre-approvalGives you an estimate of your home price range based on an initial review of your application and limited credit information only. It requires a mortgage application. Doesn’t require you to provide actual documentsTypically issued within two or three daysCredit approvalGives you an estimated loan amount based on an initial underwriter review of your credit and the information you provided. This letter is their highest standard of credit approval. Requires copies of financial documents (e.g. paystubs, tax returns, bank statements, etc.)This is the type of letter you want to obtain prior to making offers on homes as it will make your offer more solid and competitiveTypically issued within five days
