What Is a Credit Card Cash Advance Fee?

One of the transactions you can make on your credit card is a cash advance. Taking out a credit card cash advance is kind of like withdrawing cash from the ATM using your debit card, only with a credit card cash advance, you're borrowing cash from your credit limit, not from your checking account. When you take out an advance on your credit card, you have to repay the money just as you do with purchases you make on your credit card.

The Cash Advance Fee

Your credit card issuer isn't really doing you any favors by letting you take out a cash advance, which can be done via ATM or through convenience checks your card issuer sends in the mail. They'll make money off the transaction, by charging a cash advance fee each time you take out a cash advance against your credit limit. That's on top of interest charged starting from the day you make the cash advance.

How Much Is a Credit Card Cash Advance Fee?

The exact amount of your cash advance fee depends on the amount of your advance and the method your credit card issuer uses to calculate the fee.

Most credit card issuers charge either a flat fee or a percentage of the cash advance amount, whichever is greater. For example, a typical cash advance fee is the greater of $10 or 5%. So, if you take out a cash advance of $100 under these terms, your cash advance fee would be $10 since 5% of $100 is only $5. On the other hand, if you take out a cash advance of $500, your cash advance fee would be $25.

With some credit cards, you can be charged a cash advance fee for cash equivalent transactions. These are transactions that are treated like a cash advance even though you haven't taken out cash from an ATM. For example, you'll also be charged a cash advance fee if you use your credit card as overdraft protection, purchase a money order, put money on a reloadable gift card, buy lottery tickets, or send money to another person. The fee for cash equivalent transactions may be different from the regular cash advance fee.

Your credit card issuer is required to disclose the method it uses to calculate your cash advance fee.

Refer to your credit card agreement or the back of your billing statement for more information on your cash advance fee.

If you have questions about your cash advance fee, contact your credit card's customer service department by calling the number on the back of your credit card. Know how the fee is calculated before you take out a cash advance so you won't be caught off guard.

Can You Avoid a Cash Advance Fee?

The only way to avoid a cash advance fee is by avoiding cash advances and cash equivalent transactions on your credit card. If you can't avoid the transaction completely, you can minimize the cash advance fee you pay by reducing the amount of cash you withdraw on your credit card. And since interest starts accruing right away on a cash advance, paying your cash advance back quickly will lower the overall cost of the advance.

How To Withdraw Cash From Credit Card Without Pin

How to withdraw cash from a credit card without a pin you might be wondering? Is it possible to withdraw cash from my credit card without a PIN? Can you really get cash advances from your credit card? Yeah, you bet! You have several different options to get cash advances without a PIN.

Before we dive in, we do want you to think about using alternate means. Cash advances have high APRs and if you’re not careful, you can find yourself in financial turmoil quickly. It’s a serious thing and we just want you to be mindful of that. With that being said, let’s get going.

With A PIN

How To Withdraw Cash From Credit Card Without Pin
One of the ways to get a cash advance is with a PIN. For most credit cards, you’ll have to request this PIN.
However, you won’t be able to do it over the phone or online. The only way you’ll get a PIN is through the mail, which can take 7-10 business days for you to receive.
When you don’t need money right away, that’s not a problem. If you do, you’ll need to find another way.

However, if you have the PIN, you can go to any ATM that accepts your credit card and you can withdraw cash from your card. The amount of cash you can get depends on what your credit card has allowed for a cash advance.

I know some of you are crazy about these ATM fees, you just don’t want to pay them. What are your options?
You need to visit the issuer bank or an in-network ATM if you want to avoid any fees. This is about the only way you’ll be able to get away from the fees and charges.
For example, you can have a $1,000 credit limit, but for cash advances, the limit may only be $300. Some credit cards may not offer them, others may have no limits at all. If you only have a $500 cash advance limit and try to get $501, you’ll be denied.

Before you attempt to get a cash advance, you need to make sure you know what your limit is. You can find out by calling your credit card issuer, visiting your online account, or checking the guidelines.

How To Withdraw Cash From Credit Card Without Pin

Now, for those of you that don’t have a PIN, you can still get a cash advance. All you need to do is go to a bank teller and request a cash advance on your credit card.
You’ll need to have your credit card with you and you’ll also need a government-issued photo, such as your driver’s license or a passport would do.

Some credit card companies will issue what is called an access check or convenience check. You can use these to withdrawal money on your credit card.
These blank checks draw on your credit line, not a checking account. You may be wondering how you can get these checks.
Some credit card issuers will send them automatically, others you’ll need to request before they send them to you. The bad thing, these checks are subject to high APRs, so be aware of that before you cash them.

Need another way to get some money on your credit card? It’s called the original “cash back.”
Walmart would be a good example as they offer up to $100 cashback. All you have to do is take your credit card to Walmart, buy something small and get up to $100 cashback.

It’s important to note, all credit cards are different and some will not trigger the cashback option when you check out.
Thought that was only for debit cards? True, in some places, you’ll have to find one that gives you a cashback option when you go to pay for an item.
I use my Chase credit card at a local gas station and can get cashback, so you can try the local stores too.

Using Prepaid Debit Cards

How To Withdraw Cash From Credit Card Without Pin
As another option, if you want the ability to get cash advances off a card, you can get a prepaid debit card.
Prepaid cards are not secured credit cards, they differ in a lot of different ways. Most importantly, prepaid cards do not report on your credit, secured credit cards can.
The good news, you can get a prepaid card for a few dollars. You’ll then be able to load money and use it just like a debit card.
Some scenarios may warrant it, this route is still cheaper than a cash advance.

Using A Debit Card

As we’ve touched on several times, cash advances are expensive. Even if you can’t find an ATM, it would be cheaper to use an out-of-network ATM versus getting cash off a credit card. If you have money in the bank, draw it out. That costs you nothing in fees while cash advances and prepaid cards still cost money.

Request A PIN Number

If you don’t have a PIN for your credit card, might as well request one.
Like we said earlier, you’ll need to request one by calling the credit card issuer or by calling them directly. Either way, you’ll have to wait 7-10 days for them to mail it to you as they won’t give you a PIN over the phone or online.
It’s possible that some creditors will give you a temporary PIN to use. Just make sure your store is safe so no one else can get a hold of it.

Lost My PIN

If you’ve lost your credit card PIN, just request a new PIN. Again, they won’t give you a PIN over the phone, but you can receive a new one in 7-10 business days.
When you do get your new PIN, make sure you put it up somewhere safe. When you have only one credit card, remembering one PIN is simple.
If you have 5, 10, 20 credit cards, remembering PINs can be tough. When you have a secure safe, you may want to store them there.

We usually don’t recommend writing anything down, but if you have a home safe, that’s likely the best place to put it if you’ll be writing your PINs down on paper.

If you do choose to do so, we recommend writing them in code, which means in a way that only you understand versus just writing the numbers down. For example, you may add (1) to each number.
When you look at your PIN, you know to subtract (1) from each number you wrote down. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Requesting an Increased Cash Advance Limit from Chase for Online Serve Reloads

I’m sure most of you are sick of hearing about Serve and their “cash advance fees” on Chase cards, but I promise this will be the last post about this issue.  Last Thursday/Friday, Serve or Chase started processing online Serve reloads slightly differently than before (link).  As it turned out, no cash advance fees ever posted, but the online Serve reload would decrease your cash advance available balance (link).

If you tried to use a Chase credit card with a cash advance limit smaller than your online load amount or a Chase Ink Bold business Charge Card, your online Serve reload would fail and you would get this error message.

Serve Reload Payment Declined

To resolve the issue, I sent a secure message to Chase asking them to increase my cash advance limit to $500.  Unfortunately, Chase was unable to do so over Secure Message (one of only a few things that they cannot do, apparently).

Chase Secure Message Raise Cash Advance Limit

My how to get cash advance on credit card chase idea was to call Chase and have them manually increase my cash advance limit on my Chase Freedom from $0 to something around $500.  I never said why I wanted to increase my cash advance limit and he never asked.

Cash Advance Limit $0

Toward the end of the call, the representative was able to increase my cash advance limit to $1,300, which represents 20% of my $6,500 total credit limit on how to get cash advance on credit card chase Chase Freedom.

Cash Advance Limit $1300

I attempted another online Serve reload and this time the transaction went through.  The $200 pending charge showed up in my Chase Freedom online account right away.

Chase Freedom Pending Serve Reload

Looking at the available cash advance limit, the available balance decreased by $200.

Cash Advance Limit Now $1100

There are multiple reports that online Serve reloads still post as purchases, regardless of what the cash advance balance/limit says.  I tested the charges on my parents’ Serve cards (my Guinea Pigs) and all the online Serve reloads posted as purchases.

Serve Reloads Posting as Credit Not Cash Advances

For completeness, the Chase Ink Plus Business Credit Card does have a cash advance limit, so it should work with online Serve reloads.

Chase Ink Plus Visa $1000 Cash Advance Limit

Unfortunately the Chase Ink Bold Business Charge Card does not have a cash advance limit (since it is a charge card), therefore it will no longer work with online Serve reloads.

Update: apparently some Chase Ink Bold Business Charge Cards are still working with online Serve reloads (thanks Helix!)
