Kooky Canuck owners Lana and Shawn Danko were inspired by a burger challenge they encountered on a family trip to Illinois. It led to the creation of a trio of hamburger challenges at the Memphis,Tennessee restaurant: the 4-pound Kookamonga Challenge for solo eaters; the 6-pound Kookamonga Challenge for two who consume 12 pounds of meat total; and the 12-pound Kookamonga Challenge for a quartet of carnivores who consume 25 pounds of meat as a team.

The original 4-pound Kookamonga Challenge involves one person eating one 4-pound ground chuck patty cooked on a flat-top griddle, a two-pound bun, a pound-and-a-half of lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and cheese topped with a whole dill pickle (a total 12,387 calories; the side of fries is optional). The burger must be consumed in one hour (no purging and contestants must have an empty mouth before time is called). It’s one of the toughest challenges around with a .62-percent success rate.

It wasn’t until a year and half after opening the restaurant and inaugurating the contest in 2005 that Patrick Bertoletti completed the very first challenge in 11 minutes and 21 seconds. Since then, there have been 4,182 attempts and 23 people have completed the challenge. The fastest time overall belongs to Matt “Megatoad” Stonie, who completed the challenge in 4 minutes and 43 seconds. Those who consume the $35.99 burger in one hour get it for free along with a framed color photo placed on the restaurant’s wall of fame.

The Bomb Challenge at Paddy Long’s, Chicago, Illinois, United States

Those who take on The Bomb Challenge at Paddy Long’s in Chicago, Ill. have 45 minutes to consume a five-pound bacon, sausage and ground pork meatloaf wrapped with a maple and brown sugar glazed bacon weave and one pound of French fries.

“Though The Bomb was intended to be shared amongst groups of bacon lovers, the idea that there might be a few gifted/masochistic bacon maniacs out there who could eat the entire bomb on their own was too intriguing, and it certainly gets people talking!” said Andy Aronis, manager of Paddy Long’s.

Of the 91 challenge attempts in four years, only seven brave souls have managed to devour The Bomb, including Jamie “The Bear” McDonald, who completed The Bomb Challenge in 8 minutes and 10 seconds. They were each rewarded with the meal being free (a $70 value), a T-shirt, their name added to the restaurant’s wall and the “admiration/disgust of their friends,” according to Aronis.

“There is nothing about The Bomb that makes it easy for professional, or especially non-professional, eaters. It’s a huge, hot, spicy, dense rugby ball of bacon, and just when you think it’s over, there’s 1 pound of fries still waiting for you,” said Aronis.

Since 1986, hundreds of diners, including “Man v. Food host Adam Richman, have taken on The Broken Yolk Café Challenge at one of the 16 Southern California locations of The Broken Yolk Café. It’s a 12-egg omelet filled with mushrooms, onions, American cheese and smothered with chili and more cheese accompanied with a pile of home fries and two biscuits served on a 15-inch pizza pan. Folks have one hour to eat the $29.95 breakfast. If they do, along with a free meal, they get a T-shirt and their name added to the wall of fame.

Twice a year – February 17 and July 29 (National Wing Day) – patrons of the West End Tavern can test their eating skills at the Wing King Challenge in Boulder,Colorado. The challenge is to eat 50 Buffalo wings in 30 minutes or less. Diners pay a $25 entry fee, which includes all the wings they can eat in 30 minutes. Those who eat 50 buffalo wings, a feat only achieved 5 percent of the time, also get a $25 gift card and a Wing King T-shirt, along with bragging rights. If there is more than one person that finishes the 50 wings, the overall title goes to whoever finished them the quickest. Since Mick & Angelo’s opened 20 years ago, the Niagara Falls Italian restaurant has offered the Mick and Angelo’s Italian Challenge, a fun way to feature all the restaurant’s most famous handmade Italian dishes. The 90-minute challenge begins with the daily soup and a fresh loaf of garlic bread. Then come the entrees: homemade lasagna, chicken parmigiana, cheese manicotti, meatballs, spicy sausage and spaghetti. The finale is a red velvet cupcake. Regardless of finishing or not, guests who attempt this 7-pound food challenge get their photos on the Mick & Angelo’s Facebook page. Those who are successful get the meal for free along with a Mick & Angelo’s T-shirt. Folks who don’t finish must pay $48.19 plus 18-percent gratuity.

Ultimate Destroyer Challenge at Papa Bob’s Bar-B-Que, Bonner Springs, Kansas, United States

Originally designed by Bob Caviar, owner of Kansas restaurant Papa Bob’s Bar-B-Que, for a family or friends to share, the 12-inch Ultimate Destroyer sandwich ultimately became a challenge at the urging of Caviar’s friends.

The foot-long hoagie bun is stuffed with a half pound of pulled pork, a half pound of sliced pork with sauce and two slices of white bread for stability, followed with a half pound of smoked turkey and a half pound of smoked ham with more sauce and two more slices of bread, followed by three half-pound smoked hamburgers with even more sauce and more bread, followed by a half pound of smoked brisket and a half pound of smoked barbecue sausage with yet more sauce. It includes more than 1-pound of French fries and either four pickle spears or four jalapeno peppers. Eat all this in 45 minutes or less, without going to the restroom, dipping any part of the meal in drinks or using the “UP-CHUCK” bucket and you win the sandwich, a T-shirt, an “I Survived the Ultimate Destroyer” button, an exuberant shout of “Attaboy or an Attagirl” and your picture is added to the “Wall of Fame,” which consists of only five people who have destroyed the Ultimate Destroyer. One of the oldest food challenges around, Crown Candy Kitchen inSt. Louis, Mo. dares customers to drink five malts in 30 minutes. Since 1913, the old-school soda fountain, kitchen and candy shop founded by Harry Karandzieff and his best friend Pete Jugaloff, has had a policy of giving away the frosty malts to anyone who can slurp down five malts in a half-hour. The 24-ounce malts are made with three large scoops of ice cream, fresh milk and old-fashioned malted milk powder.

The folks at Jake’s Sandwich Board saw a lot of food challenges around the country and thought they could create one to top them all, Jake’s 5-pound Philly Challenge inPhiladelphia, Pa. The Philly-themed food challenge consisting of a 2-foot cheesesteak, 24 Peanut Chews, 12 Tastykakes, four soft pretzels and one cherry soda. Challengers have 45 minutes to complete the meal. Only five folks have successfully finished the $34.95 feast. Those who can beat the beastly meal get it free along with a free Jake’s T-shirt and their picture added to the wall of fame.

Tex-Ass Challenge at Voodoo Doughnut, Eugene and Portland, Oregon and Denver, Colorado, United States

When Voodoo Doughnut first opened its doors, the business hours were from 8 p.m. to 10 a.m., attracting drunken night crowds who boasted they would eat the Tex-Ass doughnut (a large glazed doughnut equivalent to six of its regular-sized doughnuts) in under a minute-and-a-half. Voodoo Doughnut decided to let them put their money where their mouths were – literally. Hundreds have accepted the challenge and have been successful including Travel Channel’s Richman.

The four Voodoo Doughnut locations are now open 24/7 allowing anyone to take on the challenge anytime. Those who eat the $4.25 Tex-Ass doughnut in 80 seconds or less get it for free along with a one-inch button that emblazoned with “I won the Tex-Ass Challenge at Voodoo Doughnut!”

For an added challenge, Voodoo Doughnut hosts a monthly First Friday eating contest at its original location in downtown Portland, Ore. Up to five people can sign up. Each contestant gets a box of doughnuts, picked out by the staff. The first person to eat all the doughnuts in the box wins a Voodoo Doughnut T-shirt, the 1” button and bragging rights.

This year's Thanksgiving Super Feast in Houston in jeopardy as donations run short

FOX 26 Reporter Damali Keith explains why the feast could be in jeopardy this year.

HOUSTON - It’s being called a "terrible shortage" of Thanksgiving food donations putting Thursday's Super Feast in jeopardy but you can help change that.

A Super Feast Emergency Food Drive is underway at George R. Brown Convention Center because come Thursday, Thanksgiving meals are expected to be served to tens of thousands of Houstonians in need, but the non-profit hosting the event is still in need.

"We’re about 30% short of our goal," explains Stephanie Lewis Regional Director of City Wide Club of America.  

With every kind-hearted Houstonian who drives up and leaves donations outside the GRB in the emergency food drive, the non-profit City Wide Club of America inches closer to being able to feed over 25,000 people at the 43rd Thanksgiving Super Feast on Thanksgiving Day. 

"This year, because of so many challenges, the high rise in the cost of food, utilities, and other necessities we’re finding that we’re running a little short," says Lewis.

So City Wide Club is accepting frozen turkeys and they really need canned goods and other non-perishables. 

"Beans, peas, corn, you know, the regular staples as well as things like rice and beans, dry goods, spaghetti, macaroni," adds Lewis. 

"I donated quite a bit of canned food, some cereal. Things like that. I was recently laid off so I know the struggle. When that happened with me, friends shared with me, food. So I wanted to give back and share as well to those unfortunate ones, just like I have been," says Sabra Reyes who is still in need of a job. 

Sabra’s and all of the donations will help feed families, military veterans, seniors, and the homeless. Everyone receiving a Super Feast meal will also get a food basket to go.

"We want to make sure that we give everyone who attends a sense of hope and comfort during this holiday time," Lewis smiles. 

When you stop by to donate, you never know who you’ll meet, like the Houston Texans Cheerleaders. 

"We always love to give back to the community," one of the cheerleaders explained and you may end up photobombed by Captain America and Wonder Woman? 

"Yes. It’s us, but they are the real superheroes. We’re just here to support them," as Captain America points to the City Wide Club of America representatives and volunteers.

"It’s a time for joy and caring and sharing, so we want to make sure we spread that throughout the community," smiles Lewis.  
   
Donations will be accepted until 6:00 p.m. and again all day Wednesday at GRB outside Exhibit Hall A. You don’t even have to get out of your vehicle. Volunteers will unload for you. Speaking of, they’re also short on volunteers, which are needed Wednesday for Super Feast preparations and Thursday for helping in the kitchen, bussing tables, and serving food.
   
This year, there’s also been a big request for the non-profit to assist with utilities and rent. If you’d like to help visit the City Wide Club website at citywideclub.com.

Wing It On! in Spring Hosting Another Epic Food Challenge for a Renowned Social Media Influencer

WHAT: Wing It On!, the fan-favorite wing joint known for its fresh, never-frozen, all-natural wings ’n wiches, is having an epic food challenge for a famous social media influencer. The Spring location will be hosting Raina Huang of @rainaiscrazy for Wing It On!’s “Wings of Prey” challenge, where Raina will have eight minutes to attempt to eat as many wings as possible without drinking a beverage and break the current record of 62, recently set by Joel Hansen when he visited the Spring location in July.

WHY: The Wings of Prey Challenge started in 2011 with the opening of the first Wing It On! store in Waterbury, CT. The hottest wings on the menu are the “Wings of Prey,” and for the challenge, a special “challenge edition” is used, which kicks up the heat to four times hotter than normal. The contest rules are simple - the participant has eight minutes to eat as many Wings of Prey as possible without taking a sip of a beverage until the time is up. There is a Top 10 leaderboard at the original Waterbury store, and right now the record is 62 wings. To get on the Top 10, Huang will need to eat at least 18 wings.

WHO: Huang is a social media influencer focused on food and competitive eater specializing in epic food challenges. The owners of the location, David Alleman and Jessica Stuckey, will be hosting Huang and providing the food.

HOUSTON (November 8, 2019) – Oral food challenges (OFCs) are the gold standard for allergists when diagnosing a food allergy. The person being tested is given a very small dose of the food by mouth under the supervision of a board-certified allergist to test for a severe reaction.

Two medically challenging cases being presented at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) Annual Scientific Meeting in Houston contain new information on the benefits of OFCs when diagnosing food allergies.

Oral food challenge best for diagnosing peanut allergy

This case involved a 17-month-old boy with atopic dermatitis (eczema) and what was thought to be peanut allergy based on a skin test and blood test.  The boy had two prior small rashes on his mouth after eating peanut.

“We weren’t convinced he was allergic to peanut because although his prior skin prick and blood testing suggested he was sensitive to peanut, he’d never had a convincing allergic reaction,” says allergist Katherine Tison, MD, ACAAI member and lead author of the study. “We performed an OFC, and he passed with only a small rash on his face which resolved itself. That showed he was sensitive to peanut, but not allergic. The case shows that an OFC should be used to determine if a child is truly allergic, especially prior to starting oral immunotherapy treatment, which was being considered for this child. A sensitivity shown through a skin prick or blood test is not enough to diagnose a food allergy.”

Following the successful OFC, the allergists did not recommend treatment but instead encouraged the parents to begin giving the child peanut products three times weekly to maintain his tolerance to peanut.

Cutting foods out of a child’s diet to improve eczema may result in a later food allergy

This case concerned a 3-year-old boy with uncontrolled atopic dermatitis (eczema) and asthma whose eczema hadn’t been properly treated. Because children with eczema often later develop food allergies, their parents sometimes decide to avoid foods that have previously been tolerated due to concerns about flares of eczema – or concerns about developing a full-blown food allergy.

“Skin prick testing showed the little boy had sensitization to egg, peanut and sesame,” says allergist Evelyn Wang, MD, ACAAI member and lead author of the abstract. “Despite him tolerating the foods previously, and no clear association between eating the foods and flares of his eczema, his parents removed these items from his diet for one year. After one year, he passed an OFC to egg and sesame, but experienced anaphylaxis to peanut. The case shows it is possible that removing foods from a child’s diet in the hope of improving eczema may lead to food allergy later in life.”

The authors of the abstract point out that it’s important that good skin care and appropriate topical treatments for eczema be tried first to help determine if an eczema flare is due to a food allergy. If, after this treatment, the eczema flare continues, then it makes sense to move onto an OFC to determine if food allergy is the cause.

Third Annual Kolache Factory 5K/10K/1K Pays Homage to a Houston Food Icon

HOUSTON, Texas – (March 2, 2020) – The most delicious food run in the Space City returns to Houston’s Energy Corridor District on Saturday, March 28, with the Kolache Factory 5k/10K/1K! A sold-out event in 2019!

 

The 3rd Annual Kolache Factory 5K/10k/1k, sponsored by Katy-based Kolache Factory, puts its promise of offering fresh, high-quality kolache pastries “on-the-run,” to the test.

 

The ‘Challenge’ run is open to 10K runners who will be tasked with eating THREE sausage and cheese kolaches from Kolache Factory at the 3.1-mile mark and then finish the race in 120 minutes or less (20 min./mile).

 

The ‘Casual’ run is for 5K run/walkers, plus a Kolache Kids Fun Run 1K for ages 12 and under. (One parent per child may run the 1K for free.)

HOUSTON (November 8, 2019) – Oral food challenges (OFCs) are the gold standard for allergists when diagnosing a food allergy. The person being tested is given a very small dose of the food by mouth under the supervision of a board-certified allergist to test for a severe reaction.

Two medically challenging cases being presented at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) Annual Scientific Meeting in Houston contain new information on the benefits of OFCs when diagnosing food allergies.

This case involved a 17-month-old boy with atopic dermatitis (eczema) and what was thought to be peanut allergy based on a skin test and blood test.  The boy had two prior small rashes on his mouth after eating peanut.

“We weren’t convinced he was allergic to peanut because although his prior skin prick and blood testing suggested he was sensitive to peanut, he’d never had a convincing allergic reaction,” says allergist Katherine Tison, MD, ACAAI member and lead author of the study. “We performed an OFC, and he passed with only a small rash on his face which resolved itself. That showed he was sensitive to peanut, but not allergic. The case shows that an OFC should be used to determine if a child is truly allergic, especially prior to starting oral immunotherapy treatment, which was being considered for this child. A sensitivity shown through a skin prick or blood test is not enough to diagnose a food allergy.”

Following the first horizon bank foundation OFC, the allergists did not recommend treatment but instead encouraged the parents to begin giving the child peanut products three times weekly to maintain his tolerance to peanut.

Cutting foods food challenges in houston of a child’s diet to improve eczema may result in a later food allergy

This case concerned a 3-year-old boy with uncontrolled atopic dermatitis (eczema) and asthma whose eczema hadn’t been properly treated. Because children with eczema often later develop food allergies, their parents sometimes decide to avoid foods that have previously been tolerated due to concerns about flares of eczema – or concerns about developing a full-blown food allergy.

“Skin prick testing showed the little boy had sensitization to egg, peanut and sesame,” says allergist Evelyn Wang, MD, ACAAI member and lead author of the abstract. “Despite him tolerating the foods previously, and no clear association between eating the foods and flares of his eczema, his parents removed these items from his diet for one year. After one year, he passed an OFC to egg and sesame, but experienced anaphylaxis to peanut. The case shows it is possible that removing foods from a child’s diet in the hope of improving eczema may lead to food allergy later in life.”

The authors of the abstract point out that it’s important that good skin care and appropriate topical treatments for eczema be tried first to help determine if an eczema flare is due to a food allergy. If, after this treatment, the eczema flare continues, then it makes sense to move onto an OFC to determine if food allergy is the cause.

Wing It On! in Spring Hosting Another Epic Food Challenge for a Renowned Social Media Influencer

WHAT: Wing It On!, the fan-favorite wing joint known for its fresh, never-frozen, all-natural wings ’n wiches, is having an epic food challenge for a famous social media influencer. The Spring location will be hosting Raina Huang of @rainaiscrazy for Wing It On!’s “Wings of Prey” challenge, where Raina will have eight minutes to attempt to eat as many wings as possible without drinking a beverage and break the current record of 62, recently set by Joel Hansen when he visited the Spring location in July.

HOUSTON - It’s being called a "terrible shortage" of Thanksgiving food donations putting Thursday's Super Feast in jeopardy but you can help change that.

A Super Feast Emergency Food Drive is underway at George R. Brown Convention Center because come Thursday, Thanksgiving meals are expected to be served to tens of thousands of Houstonians in need, but the non-profit hosting the event is still in need.

"We’re about 30% short of our goal," explains Stephanie Lewis Regional Director of City Wide Club of America.  

With every kind-hearted Houstonian who drives up and leaves donations outside the GRB in the emergency food drive, the non-profit City Wide Club of America inches closer to being able to feed over 25,000 people at the 43rd Thanksgiving Super Feast on Thanksgiving Day. 

"This year, because of so many challenges, the high rise in the cost of food, utilities, and other necessities we’re finding that we’re running a little short," says Lewis.

So City Wide Club is accepting frozen turkeys and they really need canned goods and other non-perishables. 

"Beans, peas, corn, you know, the regular staples as well as things like rice and beans, dry goods, spaghetti, macaroni," adds Lewis. 

"I donated quite a bit of canned food, some cereal. Things like that. I was recently laid off so I know the struggle. When that happened with me, friends shared with me, food. So I wanted to give back and share as well to those unfortunate ones, just like I have been," says Sabra Reyes who is still in need of a job. 

Sabra’s and all of the donations will help feed families, military veterans, seniors, and the homeless. Everyone receiving a Super Feast meal will also get a food basket to go.

"We want to make sure that we give everyone who attends a sense of hope and comfort during this holiday time," Lewis smiles. 

When you stop by to donate, you never know who you’ll meet, like the Houston Texans Cheerleaders.

The folks at Jake’s Sandwich Board saw a lot of food challenges around the country and thought they could create one to top them all, Jake’s 5-pound Philly Challenge inPhiladelphia, Pa. The Philly-themed food challenge consisting of a 2-foot cheesesteak, 24 Peanut Chews, 12 Tastykakes, four soft pretzels and one cherry soda. Challengers have 45 minutes to complete the meal. Only five folks have successfully finished the $34.95 feast. Those who can beat the beastly meal get it free along with a free Jake’s T-shirt and their picture added to the wall of fame.

When Voodoo Doughnut first opened its doors, the business hours were from 8 p.m. to 10 a.m., attracting drunken night crowds who boasted they would eat the Tex-Ass doughnut (a large glazed doughnut equivalent to six of its regular-sized doughnuts) in under a minute-and-a-half. Voodoo Doughnut decided to let them put their money where their mouths were – literally. Hundreds have accepted the challenge and have been successful including Travel Channel’s Richman.

The four Voodoo Doughnut locations are now open 24/7 allowing anyone to take on the challenge anytime. Those who eat the $4.25 Tex-Ass doughnut in 80 seconds or less get it for free along with a one-inch button that emblazoned with “I won the Tex-Ass Challenge at Voodoo Doughnut!”

For an added challenge, Voodoo Doughnut hosts a monthly First Friday eating contest at its original location in downtown Portland, Ore. Up to five people can sign up. Each contestant gets a box of doughnuts, picked out by the staff. The first person to eat all the doughnuts in the box wins a Voodoo Doughnut T-shirt, the 1” button and bragging rights.
