The FLA Live Arena (previously known as the National Car Rental Center, Office Depot Center, BankAtlantic Center, and BB&T Center) is an indoor arena located next to Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise, Florida. It is the home venue for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League. It was completed in 1998, at a cost of US$185 million, almost entirely publicly financed, and features 70 suites and 2,623 club seats.[2]

History[edit]

An aerial shot of FLA Live Arena

In 1992, Wayne Huizenga obtained a new NHL franchise that would eventually become the Florida Panthers.[5] Until the team had an arena of their own, they initially played at the now-demolished Miami Arena, sharing the venue with the NBA's Miami Heat.[6]Sunrise City Manager Pat Salerno made public a $167-million financing and construction plan for a civic center near the Sawgrass Expressway in December 1995,[7] and Broward County approved construction in February 1996.[8] In June 1996, the site was chosen by the Panthers, and in July, Alex Muxo gathered more than a dozen architects, engineers and contractors for the first major design brainstorming session. Architects Ellerbe Becket were given 26 months to build the arena, which had to be ready by August 30, 1998, to accommodate the 1998–99 NHL season. Despite never having designed a facility that had taken less than 31 months from start to finish, they accepted the job.[5]

Seventy suites were completed with wet bars, closed circuit monitors and leather upholstery. Averaging over 650 square feet (60 m2), the suites are the largest in the country for this type of facility. Also home to private lounge box seating, all construction activity was generated by over fifty subcontractors and 2.3 million man hours without a single injury.[4] Known as the Broward County Civic Center during construction, the naming rights were won in July 1998 by National Car Rental — a company purchased by Huizenga in January 1997 — leading to the venue being named the National Car Rental Center.[9] A certificate of occupancy was given on September 12, 1998, and the arena opened on October 3, 1998 with a Celine Dion concert. The next day, Elton John performed, and on October 9, 1998, the Florida Panthers had their first home game at their new arena.[10]

As NRC's new parent company, ANC Rental, went bankrupt in 2002, the Panthers sought a new sponsor for the arena.[11] It became the Office Depot Center in the summer of 2002. (Office Depot is an office supply retailing company, which is headquartered in nearby Boca Raton.) Just over three years later, the arena's name changed again; it became the BankAtlantic Center on September 6, 2005. (BankAtlantic was headquartered in nearby Fort Lauderdale.)

Because BB&T purchased BankAtlantic in July 2012, the arena was rebranded as the BB&T Center.[12][13]

The arena is currently the largest in Florida and second-largest in the Southeastern United States, behind Greensboro Coliseum. During the 2011 offseason, the BB&T Center replaced the original green seats in the lower bowl with new red seats, as a part of the Panthers' "We See Red" campaign.[14]

In October 2012, Sunrise Sports and Entertainment completed installation of the Club Red seating sections encompassing the center ice seats during hockey games. It is an all-inclusive nightclub experience following the trend of other sports and entertainment venues in incorporating high-end seating sections and clubs.[15]

The ADT Club, located on the club level, offers food and beverage. The Duffy's Sky Club at the BB&T Center encompasses approximately 8,000 square feet (740 m2) and can cater to a maximum of about 500 guests. The Penalty Box offers fans another seating and dining option inside the BB&T Center. The Legends Lounge is a restaurant located on the Lexus Suite Level, and offers sit down service.[citation needed]

On May 14, 2013, Broward County voted to fund a new scoreboard for the county-owned arena.[16] On October 11, 2013, the scoreboard made its debut for the Panthers' 2013–14 home opener.[17]

In February 2019, it was announced that BB&T is merging with SunTrust Banks, to form Truist Financial Corporation.[18] The merged company decided to not renew the naming rights agreement after it expired in 2021; the arena will thus have the temporary name of FLA Live Arena until a new rights partner is found.[19]

Are banks open today? Federal bank holidays in 2021

The Federal Reserve, which regulates the nation’s banking system, observes 11 federal bank holidays each year that could impact the availability of your funds at your bank and delay any deposits you have made or plan to make.

All banks are closed on Thanksgiving, a Federal Reserve bank holiday, and most, but not all, will reopen Black Friday.

Depositing a check on a federal holiday could cause your funds availability to be delayed — with the deposit counting toward the next business day.

A bank holiday may also cause a bill payment to be late if the processing date is on a federal holiday.

A federal bank holiday may also mean that your local branch is closed.

Rose Oswald Poels started working at the Wisconsin Bankers Association more than 20 years ago. Back then, Oswald Poels, who is now the president and CEO of the group, says a lot of banks were open on holidays like the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., Columbus Day and Veterans Day.

“In today’s world, it’s very different,” Oswald Poels says.

More banks are choosing to close on Federal Reserve System holidays, such as Washington’s birthday or Columbus Day. Oswald Poels says some banks may take advantage of closing on a weekday holiday to either conduct all-staff training or volunteer in the community.

Banks can open on a Federal Reserve bank holiday

A bank may choose to be open on a Federal Reserve holiday. Transactions will generally process the same way they would on a weekend.

For instance, if you sign the documents to send a domestic wire transfer at your bank on a Saturday morning, that wire won’t be processed until Monday morning at the earliest, assuming Monday isn’t a Federal Reserve holiday. The same happens if you deposit a check in a bank (or online or at an ATM) on a holiday. If your bank is open on one of the Federal Reserve System holidays, the Fed is likely to reopen on the next business day. Automated Clearing House (ACH) Network transactions also aren’t processed on a bank holiday or on a weekend.

The Fed is closed on the second Monday in October for Columbus Day. So, if you deposit a check into your bank account on the Saturday before this holiday, the earliest this check will be fully available will typically be on Tuesday if the bank has same-day availability.

Customers at a bank without same-day availability won’t have their money available until Wednesday, Oswald Poels says.

Online accessibility on Federal Reserve bank holidays

Online access should be the same on a holiday as it would be on any other day or night. Of course, this is assuming the bank’s site isn’t down due to maintenance or another issue.

“If you do online banking, if you use remote deposit capture through your phone to make deposits, all of the technology functions still work,” Oswald Poels says. “So you can do those transactions. But the effect of what that means (on Fed holidays) is another story.”

While you can mobile-deposit a check on one of these holidays, it’s likely that the transaction will not process until the next business day at the earliest.

You generally can also open a bank account online on a Federal Reserve System holiday, just like you can on a night or weekend. That includes checking accounts, savings accounts, money market accounts or CDs.

Other holidays and a new holiday

Banks are generally open on Black Friday, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, though it’s possible your bank may decide to close early on one of these days.

“Everything processes through the system normally on (these days) as well because the Fed is also open,” Oswald Poels says.

With the adoption of Juneteenth National Independence Day in 2021 on June 19, the Federal Reserve has added an additional bank holiday to its calendar. As with other federal holidays with a specific date, Juneteenth is celebrated on the Friday before or the Monday after should June 19 fall on a Saturday or Sunday, respectively.

Bill pay around Federal Reserve holidays

It’s always best to pay bills a few days early. That way if a holiday or weekend is off your radar, the bill should get paid on time.

“If you have set up automatic bill pay from your account, hopefully most people arrange bill pays so that the date that the transaction is initiated is not literally the very last day that bill is due,” Oswald Poels says.

Automatic bill payments that fall on or around a Federal Reserve System holiday or on a weekend won’t process until the next business day.

“Make sure you leave yourself enough leeway from when the actual due date is to when you’ve initiated the bill pay request,” Oswald Poels says.

How are Local Banks Responding to Coronavirus Pandemic?

Est. Read Time: 3mins

Embassy Banks Saucon Valley branch is located at Rt. 378 and Colesville Road in Lower Saucon Township. The branch is one of five out of nine that will remain open during the coronavirus pandemic, the company said Thursday. (FILE PHOTO)

In times of turmoil one thing that can provide peace of mind is knowing one’s money is safe, which is why area banks are doing their best to let customers know they are in good hands financially in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

All of the banks that serve Saucon Valley customers remain open for business, however all of them have closed their lobbies in order to help promote the social distancing public health and safety officials continue to recommend to help slow the spread of the virus.

Some banks such as Embassy Bank for the Lehigh Valley have also reduced their hours and closed branches to help reduce contact between individuals at this time.

Embassy announced Thursday that effective Monday, March 30, some of its branches will close, and those that will remain open–including its branch on Rt. 378 in Lower Saucon Township–will have reduced hours.

Branches that remain open will be open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We very strongly encourage you to utilize our online and mobile banking solutions for self-service on your existing accounts, to make deposits, and to open new personal deposit accounts,” said Embassy president and CEO Dave M. Lobach Jr. in the email.

At Embassy branches, as at other local banks, the only ways to conduct business now–other than online–are at the drive-thru and by appointment for essential purposes only.

BB&T Bank

The BB&T now Truist branch at 741 Main Street is one of two bank branches in the borough of Hellertown. (FILE PHOTO)

BB&T, which is now being rebranded as Truist as the result of a merger, began to limit in-branch visits March 21. The bank said in a post on its Facebook page that it is “here to help our clients through drive-thru banking (at most branches), ATMs, mobile and online services, and at 800-BANK-BBT. In-branch consultations will also be available by appointment–please call your local branch for more information.”

BB&T has a branch at 741 Main Street in downtown Hellertown, where the drive-thru is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon, according to the hours listed on the bank’s website.

The BB&T branch inside the Coopersburg Giant store was originally scheduled to close in June, however the branch is already closed according to a list of closings published on the BB&T website.

According to updated information on the Wells Fargo website, the drive-thru at its Hellertown branch is now open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. The lobby is open by appointment only til further notice.

The Wells Fargo branch at the Promenade Shops at Center Valley is temporarily closed, as is the shopping center, with the exception of Fresh Market and some restaurants that are offering takeout and curbside pickup of food.

Fulton Bank in the Saucon Square shopping center on Rt. 378 in Lower Saucon Township is encouraging customers to use mobile banking when possible, and according to an announcement published on its website the bank has increased mobile deposit limits to make remote banking easier.

The Saucon Valley branch is now open for drive-thru banking or by appointment Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Customers can schedule an appointment by calling 1-800-FULTON-4 (1-800-385-8664).

“We recommend that you fully utilize all of Fulton’s tools that enable you to bank remotely, without needing to visit a financial center,” the company said in a statement. “This will help minimize human contact and reduce the chances of passing the virus.”

The FLA Live Arena (previously known as the National Car Rental Center, Office Depot Center, BankAtlantic Center, and BB&T Center) is an indoor arena located next to Sawgrass Mills are there any bb&t banks open on saturday Sunrise, Florida.

The arena is currently the largest in Florida and second-largest in the Southeastern Are there any bb&t banks open on saturday States, behind Greensboro Coliseum. During the 2011 offseason, the BB&T Center replaced the original green seats in the lower bowl with new red seats, as a part of the Panthers' "We See Red" campaign.[14]

In Are there any bb&t banks open on saturday 2012, Sunrise Sports and Entertainment completed installation of the Club Red seating sections encompassing the center ice seats during hockey games.
