5 key things to know about the Costco Anywhere Visa Card

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card is only offered to current Costco members. If you cancel your Costco membership, your Costco Anywhere Visa® Card will also be canceled. Though it's a store card, Costco members can use the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card wherever Visa cards are accepted and earn rewards towards everyday purchases like gas, travel, and dining.

If you aren't a current Costco member, should you pay for the membership to get access to the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card? And if you are a Costco member, do the benefits and perks offered outweigh other rewards cards? Before you apply for this store card, here are some important things to know about the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card.

Important things to know about the Costco Anywhere Visa Card

1. You must be a Costco member to apply

Before you can apply for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card, you must be a current member of Costco warehouse. When you apply for the store card, the first piece of information you must enter is your Costco membership number.

The annual cost is $60 for a Gold Star membership or $120 for a Gold Star Executive membership, plus sales tax, where applicable. Gold Star members get more discounts and perks on Costco services and a 2% annual reward up to $1,000 on eligible purchases at Costco and Costco Travel. These perks are in addition to any cashback rewards you earn by making purchases using the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card.

With no annual fee outside the cost of Costco membership, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card could be a great option. But if you are already a warehouse member at BJ's or Sam's Club, you have to decide if the additional membership cost is worth it.

2. Earn rewards on more than Costco purchases

Unlike other store cards, the rewards program is not limited to Costco purchases. The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi's rewards program offers a tiered cashback incentive based on the type of purchase you make:

  • 4% cashback on the first $7,000 per year and 1% after that

  • 3% cashback on dining and eligible travel

  • 2% cashback on Costco and Costco.com purchases

  • 1% cashback on all other purchases

3. Costco purchases are a lower-tiered reward

Though the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card is exclusive to Costco members, you won't earn the most cash back on Costco purchases. While gas, dining, and travel earn 3% - 4% cashback, Costco and Costco.com purchases are only eligible for 2% cashback rewards.

While that may be disappointing, most cash back credit cards restrict reward eligibility on warehouse purchases. If you are a frequent Costco shopper, 2% cashback with no limit can add up, making the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card a worthwhile card to have in your wallet.

4. Rewards certificates are issued once per year

If you've used other cashback credit cards before, you may be used to redeeming your rewards for purchases or cashback as soon as they show in your statement. But with the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card, you only get your cashback rewards once per year in February for the previous year. You can also only redeem it for merchandise or cash in person at a Costco warehouse.

Learn more about how to redeem Costco credit card rewards.

5. There are more benefits than just cashback rewards

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card has a solid cash back rewards program, but those aren't the only benefits you get with this store card. Cardholders also have access to travel and shopping benefits when the card is used to make purchases.

Costco Anywhere Visa Card travel benefits

When you pay for your rental car with the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card, you can save money by waiving the rental car company's collision damage insurance because the card offers up to $50,000 to fix or replace the car if it's damaged in an accident, stolen, vandalized or damaged by a natural disaster.

You, your family members, and travel companions are also covered for travel and emergency assistance coverage. This includes help to make emergency travel arrangements, getting referrals, coordinating care, and getting consultations if you are hurt outside the U.S. Emergency, and professional service costs are not covered. The card also provides worldwide travel accident insurance, covering each qualified person up to $250,000 while traveling.

You can also use the roadside assistance dispatch service in any car wherever you need it in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. You only pay for service if you use the coverage.

Another travel perk is no foreign transaction fees, no matter where you are in the world. Other cards can charge up to 3% for foreign transaction fees, which can be a surprise for cardholders once they review their statement after a vacation abroad.

Costco Anywhere Visa Card shopping benefits

Suppose you use your Costco Anywhere Visa® Card or Costco reward certificate to make an eligible purchase. In that case, the damage and theft purchase protection covers you for 120 days (90 days for residents of New York) for up to $1,000 per item or the amount charged to the card or certificate, whichever is less. You can get up to $50,000 in coverage per year and are required to make a police report if the item is stolen.

Those same purchases are also covered by the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card extended warranty. After the manufacturer warranty and customer purchased warranty expires, Citi provides 24 months of extended warranty coverage, up to $10,000 per item.

Costco Anywhere Visa Card FAQ

What types of payments does Costco accept?

The types of payments Costco accepts as cash, checks, EBT and Costco Shop Cards. Visa credit and debit cards are also accepted, along with Mastercard debit cards only. Mastercard and American Express credit cards are not accepted at Costco, Costco.com, Costco gas stations or Costco car washes.

Banking

As of Monday, the Costco Anywhere Visa Card and Costco Anywhere Visa Business Card, both issued by Citi, have officially replaced the TrueEarnings Card from Costco and American Express as the bulk retailer's rewards credit cards. And, while replacement cards have been going out to existing TrueEarnings cardholders since May, prospective customers can now apply for the new Citi cards online.

Here's what you should know if you're thinking about applying.

The Fine Print

Citi's personal and business Costco credit cards allow cardholders to earn 4% cash back on gas worldwide for the first $7,000 spent, then 1% thereafter; 3% cash back on restaurant and travel purchases worldwide; and 2% cash back on all purchases made at Costco in store and online. Cardholders will also receive 1% cash back on all other purchases, with no limits on earning potential.

Both Citi cards will also double as a Costco membership card, so while they don't technically carry an annual fee, you'll need to be a Costco member, which starts at $59 annually.

Both versions of the card feature a 0% introductory purchase annual percentage rate (APR) for the first seven months after account opening, then the variable purchase APR will be 15.49%. Late payment fees are up to $37.

The cards also provide the following benefits:

  • Extended warranty

  • Worldwide car rental insurance

  • Worldwide travel accident insurance

  • Damage and theft protection

  • Trip cancellation protection

Wholesale Rewards

Remember, given Visa has taken over as Costco's network, there are other credit cards that will work at the bulk retailer. A few other issuers recently beefed up their rewards earnings at wholesale clubs on certain cards ahead of the switchover. As of June 1, BankAmericard Cash Rewards cardholders can earn 2% cash back at wholesale clubs in addition to 3% cash back on gas, 2% cash back on groceries, and 1% cash back on all other purchases. And just last week Chase announced that its Freedom credit card will offer the 5% cash back category of Wholesale Clubs through the end of the year. (Freedom cardholders can earn up to 5% cash back on up to $1,500 spent in revolving bonus categories each quarter.)

Of course, no matter what plastic you are considering, it's important to read the terms and conditions carefully to be sure a particular credit card is right for you. It's also a good idea to check your credit score to see where you stand financially, as this may affect whether or not you can qualify. You can view two of your credit scores, updated each month, for free on Credit.com.

Note: It's important to remember that interest rates, fees and terms for credit cards, loans and other financial products frequently change. As a result, rates, fees and terms for credit cards, loans and other financial products cited in these articles may have changed since the date of publication. Please be sure to verify current rates, fees and terms with credit card issuers, banks or other financial institutions directly.

Our Verdict

Citi hasn’t sent out notice of this offer yet via email, but it’s working for people to enroll using the above registration link. Seems to be working for most/all people on most/all cards; worked for me on both of my Citi cards. Keep trying if you can’t get the offer to show at first; it should eventually show on each card. After enrolling, the button will change to ‘enrolled’. I don’t know of any way to track which cards are already enrolled; just take a screenshot at time of enrollment for good measure.

Should be easy enough to use this offer during the holiday shopping season. Hopefully any regular website purchase will work, and purchases paid for online with Paypal should work as well.

Banking

May 1, 2020

There are many reasons to love Costco: the inflation-immune $1.50 hot dog combo, the delightfully excessive 4-pound pack of Nutella, the mystique of the strangely exquisite Kirkland Signature Vodka (is it really Grey Goose?).

But there’s one thing about Costco that baffles me: the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi.

You can find an abundance of deals at Costco—but sunbank solar co-branded credit card is not one of them. The card offers only a meh cash-back rate of 2% at Costco. Compare that with the rates of similar branded cards for Target and Amazon, which offer as much as 5% back at their respective stores. (Citi didn’t respond to our repeated requests for comment on the Costco Anywhere Visa Card’s point structure.)

The Costco Anywhere Visa Card isn’t a bad credit card overall, and honestly, 2% back on Costco purchases isn’t the worst deal you can find.

Wirecutter recommends it in our guide to the best gas credit cards. It’s the card I use at gas stations. And it can be great for travel and dining if you don’t spend enough to justify getting a higher-end travel or dining card. But it got us thinking: Why do some co-branded cards not offer the best deal on their own brands?

What to use at Costco instead

Costco accepts central savings bank new york Visa cards in its warehouses and gas stations, and Costco.com accepts Mastercard and Discover as well. So if your favorite rewards card is a Visa, check to see if what you can earn back on Costco purchases equals or beats what you can earn with the Costco card.

One of your best bets for maximizing rewards is citicards sign in costco paying with the Bank of America® Cash Rewards Credit Card. It offers a base citicards sign in costco of 2% cash back at wholesale clubs, plus 3% in a category of your choice (options include gas, online shopping, dining, and travel) and 1% on all other purchases. One bummer: The 2% and 3% bonus rewards are capped at your first $2,500 in combined quarterly spending.

Sure, 2% at wholesale clubs isn’t any better than what you get with the Costco card. But since this card is part of BofA’s Preferred Rewards program, you can earn a higher rate depending on how much money you have in eligible Bank of America/Merrill accounts.

Warning: You need a minimum of $20,000 in qualifying Bank of America/Merrill accounts to qualify for a rewards bonus. If you have at least $20,000, you’d earn 2.5% back at Costco. If you have a balance of $100,000 or more, you qualify for the maximum rate of 3.5% cash back at Costco.

Although the Alliant Cashback Visa® Signature Credit Card can be get tough to get approved for, it offers an impressive 2.5% cash back on up to $10,000 in spending per billing cycle (if your spending is considerable enough to hit that limit, you won't earn any cash back on additional spending until the next billing cycle).

If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, you can partner that card with another Chase card, the Chase Freedom Unlimited, to take advantage of the Reserve’s points bonus structure. The Freedom Unlimited gives you 1.5 points per dollar on everything you buy (including your Costco shopping). You can then transfer your Freedom Unlimited points to the Chase Ultimate Rewards program and redeem them for travel, where they’re worth 2.25¢ per dollar spent.

And another Chase card, the Chase Freedom, offers 5% cash back on rotating categories (on up to $1,500 in combined purchases per quarter). One of the 5% bonus categories at the end of 2018 was wholesale clubs, so if you have the Reserve and you redeemed your points earned at Costco through the Ultimate Rewards platform for travel, they’d be worth 7.5¢ per dollar spent.

Keep in mind that the Chase Freedom card offers just 1% back on all spending not in a bonus category, so it isn’t the best deal for Costco outside of those three months—plus, there’s no guarantee that wholesale clubs will be a bonus category every year.

Why some branded credit cards offer middling deals

Costco’s co-branded card doesn’t offer the highest cash-back rate out there on Costco purchases—but it’s not the worst offender.

“You would think since you’re carrying the brand on the front of the card, it would deliver the most value when you’re shopping at that brand,” said John Grund, managing director of payments at Accenture. But these cards often over-deliver in other spending peoples bank bellingham wa while under-delivering on rewards for their own brand.

Costco isn’t alone in this practice. The The Disney® Premier Visa® Card, which has a $49 annual fee, offers just 2% back on purchases you make at Disney Parks, including admission tickets and hotel stays. The no-annual-fee Disney® Visa® Card offers a paltry 1% at Disney Parks. I’d rather use the $0-annual-fee SavorOne card to get 3% back on my dinner at Cinderella’s Royal Table.

Similarly, the best airline credit card for the majority of frequent flyers isn’t actually a branded airline card but The Platinum Card® from American Express.

What gives? Why do some branded credit cards offer merely adequate—and often mediocre—deals on their own brands?

“I wouldn’t say it’s rocket science, but it is a science,” Grund told me. “And it all comes down to data.”

Consider it from the merchant’s point of view:

You’re already loyal, so there’s no incentive for the company to generously reward you:

“You already have a connection to the brand, so they don’t need to incentivize you as much to shop there,” said Mike Berinato, vice president of financial services at Market Strategies International, a market research and consulting firm.

Grund said Disney knows full well that a Disney loyalist probably wouldn’t decide to take an additional Disney trip or buy more merch at the Disney store  just because they had the card: “Instead, [the credit card issuer is] better off fostering loyalty by rewarding other parts of the customer’s spending and lifestyle.”

The company is focused on doing what it takes to stay at the top of your wallet: The worst thing for a card issuer is to have its card end up in the back of your sock drawer, Grund said. So brands like Costco and their partnering banks come up with ways to make their card more attractive for using again and again—not just at Costco. If you visit Costco only once a month, that card could quickly end up in the back of your wallet. But giving you 4% back on gas may have you swiping the card more frequently.

“In the bank’s mind, if they can get you using the card at the gas station, even if it’s just once a week, it’s now near the top of [your] wallet,” Grund said. This can generate a knock-on effect in that you might end up pulling it out at lunch as well, he added.

Lower interchange fees leave less room for rewards: Whenever you swipe your card at a store, the merchant pays an interchange fee, a transaction fee (generally 1% to 2% of the transaction cost) that the merchant's bank must pay to the bank and network that issued the credit card. The more frequently you use your card, the more money the networks (such as Visa and Mastercard) and banks make in interchange fees.

Sometimes, payment networks and issuers strike deals with merchants where the merchants pay a reduced interchange fee in exchange for promoting a co-branded card. This means that in many cases the issuer (say, Citi) and the network (say, Visa) make less money when you use a branded card at that actual brand (say, Costco) than they do when you use it at other merchants (where they can charge higher interchange fees).

If the interchange fees are reduced, the banks and networks earn less money. That money has to come from somewhere—and you may pay for it in the form of lessened rewards.

Some brands can’t juice rewards and remain profitable: “If you’re a warehouse club and you’re already selling a case of Cheerios at razor-thin margins, you can’t afford to give the consumer an additional 5% off because you’ve already taken the price as low as you can go,” Grund said.

How to make the most money from co-branded credit cards

On the surface, the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi seems like the most logical card to swipe at Costco, and the Disney® Premier Visa® Card might seem like the optimal card to fund your Disney vacation. But you should always read your credit f 14 super tomcat 21 terms and conditions to find out if that’s really the case.

If you do your homework, you may find alternative ways to get the same (or better) rewards. Some Disney aficionados might justify the Disney® Premier Visa® Card’s $49 annual fee because it gives them 10% off at the Disney Store, but they might not realize that the $0-annual-fee Disney® Visa® Debit Card offers the same benefit.

It’s easy to fall for marketing spin and fail to dig deeper—even among experts. It wasn’t until we chatted for this article that Berinato, a financial services researcher, self-professed Costco loyalist, and Costco credit card holder, realized he could get a better rate on Costco purchases with another card.

“I don’t think a lot of people realize that either,” he said. “It comes down to habituated behavior. I already show my credit card as my membership to get in the door of Costco. Since it’s in my hand, that’s what I’ll pay with.”

Be aware of how valuable your rewards really are: Grund said many of the rewards he sees advertised have “strong headline value” but aren’t actually as meaningful as they first appear.

A reward of 4% on gas seems bountiful. But break it down. The average American household spends less than $2,000 a year (PDF) on gas or other fuels. That spending results in about $80 of rewards a year. That’s not nothing; it covers a couple of tanks of gas. But it’s hardly a gold mine. And it really won’t affect your behavior.

“Honestly, the card could give you 10% on gas, but what am I going to do, burn more gas this week? Drive extra just to get more value?” Grund said.

Don’t be seduced by the perks: Many co-branded cards offer perks that play into people’s fantasies. A free Disneyland ticket after a year of spending has more cachet than a few dollars direct-deposited into your account every month. But is it really better?

Often the answer is no. You may well be better off earning cash back in a straightforward way rather than sticking with a card that limits your rewards spending or perks to a specific merchant.

Remember: Co-branded credit cards aren’t all bad

Don’t write off co-branded cards completely, however. Some co-branded cards actually offer the highest rate we found for shopping at that store, such as the Target RedCard™ Credit Card, which offers 5% on most Target purchases (that card also earned a spot in our guide to the best grocery credit cards of 2019). For some merchants, offering the best cash-back rate is a way to convince shoppers to spend there rather than with competitors. Similarly, the Uber Credit Card offers 5% on Uber rides (doled out as Uber Cash, applicable toward your next ride).

“Target RedCard holders are some of our most loyal guests, generating nearly a quarter of our sales in 2018,” Target spokesperson Erin Conroy said.

And even if you aren’t necessarily getting the best rewards rate, a card like the Disney Visa card could serve as a savings vehicle for a vacation fund you may not otherwise have created.

“I think there’s something to the dreaming, aspirational part of travel that you can get from credit card rewards,” Berinato said.

Card Overview

If you’re a die-hard Costco shopper who measures your pantry and gas fill-ups in bulk, then the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is an amazing value. Not only does the Costco card stand as one of the best wholesale club credit cards among the handful available, it’s actually one of the best cards for is low fat chocolate milk bad for you on the market.

It’s very tempting to pounce on a card for shopping that covers such a diverse group of bonus categories, but the required Costco membership and cash back restrictions lurking in the fine print might not make this co-branded store card worth it for some.

Current sign-up bonus

The Costco cash back card is one of the few retail credit cards that doesn’t offer a sign-up bonus. Typically, you’ll at least see bonus store credit or citicards sign in costco rates.

Other no annual fee cards for wholesale club and gas rewards deliver sign-up bonuses worth at least $150 or $200. Even the Capital One Walmart Rewards® Mastercard® provides a 5 percent introductory cash back rate on in-store purchases for your first 12 months as a card member, and the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card gives you a $100 Amazon gift card upon approval.

Rewards rate

Although the first thing that comes to mind might be groceries, Costco’s card actually earns more cash back on other expenses like gas, restaurants and travel. It’s a great all-around travel partner as well. Since it’s a co-branded Visa card, your Costco Visa cash back opportunities are worldwide—not just storewide.

Earning cash back

In addition to the 2 percent cash back you’ll earn on Costco/Costco.com purchases, you’ll also earn a whopping 4 percent on eligible gas purchases (on up to $7,000 in purchases per year, then 1 percent), 3 percent on eligible restaurant and travel purchases and 1 percent on all other purchases.

However, you’ll find a few caveats in the terms and conditions. For instance, though the category extends beyond just Costco gas purchases, you can’t earn 4 percent cash back at other store-brand gas stations—like Walmart or Harris Teeter—or for non-vehicle gas purchases. You also won’t earn your 3 percent dining and travel cash back at bakeries, some department store restaurants/cafes or bed-and-breakfasts. Oddly, these travel reward exclusions rule out commuter and train travel too.

Redeeming cash back

Maybe the most disappointing restrictions come with redeeming your Costco credit card’s cash back. You’re only allowed to redeem your cash back once per year, after your February billing statement. Then, you receive your rewards as a single “credit card reward certificate,” which must be redeemed for cash back in-store at a U.S. or Puerto Rico Costco before December 31 of that year. Otherwise, you lose your rewards.

While maybe not a deal-breaker for those who shop at Costco regularly, this is a huge drawback. Most cash back cards let you redeem your rewards at any time (or after hitting a minimum earning) and for much more flexible options—such as a statement credit or direct deposit.

How much are the rewards worth?

Costco cash back is worth the same as with any other cash back card: 1 percentage back is worth 1 cent.

However, in this case, personal value factors into how much the rewards are worth. The earning rate is stronger than many non-store-branded cash back cards, but the inconvenient redemption process might be a deal-breaker if you didn’t plan to use it at Costco as citicards sign in costco. Consider your needs carefully, because you can’t cancel your card before next February without losing your hard-earned rewards.

Other cardholder perks

Outside its fantastic rewards and the ease of using your credit card as your membership card, the Costco card’s benefits are pretty slim.

Purchase protection

With purchase protection, You may be reimbursed if your purchases are stolen or damaged within three to four months after you bought them. This feature is especially handy when you’re shopping through Costco’s website and need delivery.

Citi Entertainment

You’ll have access to exclusive “experiences” through Citi Entertainment, since your Costco Visa credit card is a Citi card. You can grab presale concert tickets, sign-up for dining or travel packages available to cardmembers and more.

Rates and Fees

There is no annual fee on the surface, but you’ll have to pay for a Costco membership to apply if you’re not already a member. The minimum Costco membership cost of $60 is pretty easy to offset with your high-earning cash back categories, though. You only need to spend $125 each month in your 4 percent gas category to make up for your membership fee.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any zero-interest offers if you were hoping to switch balances to this card. On the bright side, the 15.24 percent (variable) ongoing APR is lower than the average credit card interest rate, and there are no foreign transaction fees to boot.

How the Costco Anywhere Visa compares to other cash back cards

The Costco card’s bonus categories are competitive across the board compared to other cash back cards with no annual fee. It can be hard to find a single credit card that offers rewards on gas, dining, travel and wholesale clubs at this level.

However, the Costco card’s Achilles’ heel is its lackluster benefits and lower rewards rate on actual Costco purchases. Granted, many cards don’t earn cash back at wholesale clubs, and the typical flat-rate card offers 1.5 percent back. But it’s common for retail cards to offer up to 5 percent back at their store—including the previously mentioned Capital One Walmart Rewards and Amazon credit cards.

The closest competition when it comes to consistent wholesale club cash back would have to be the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card. It earns 3 citicards sign in costco cash back in a choice category that can be changed monthly—including travel, gas and dining—and 2 percent back at wholesale clubs and grocery stores (on up to $2,500 in combined 3 and 2 percent category purchases each quarter, then 1 percent).
