Growing up in Indonesia, Farwiza Farhan always loved the ocean. It's why she decided to study marine biology. But the more she learned, the more she realized that it wasn't enough to work in the ocean. She needed to protect it.

"I see the ocean ecosystem collapsing due to overfishing and climate change," she says. "I felt powerless and didn't know what to do [so] I decided to pursue my master's in environmental management."

This choice led her to work in environmental protection, and it was fate that brought her back home to the Leuser Ecosystem in Sumatra, Indonesia — one of the last places on earth where species such as tigers, orangutans, elephants and Sumatran rhinoceros still live in the wild today. It's also home to over 300 species of birds, eight of which are endemic to the region.

"When I first flew over the Leuser Ecosystem, I saw an intact landscape, a contiguous block of lush, diverse vegetation stretched through hills and valleys. The Leuser is truly a majestic landscape — one of a kind."

She fell in love. "I had my first orangutan encounter in the Leuser Ecosystem," she remembers. "As the baby orangutan swung from the branches, seemingly playing and having fun, the mother was observing us. I was moved by the experience."

Courtesy of Farwiza Farhan

"Over the years," she continues, "the encounters with wildlife, with people, and with the ecosystem itself compounded. My curiosity and interest towards nature have turned into a deep desire to protect this biodiversity."

So, she began working for a government agency tasked to protect it. After the agency dismantled for political reasons in the country, Farhan decided to create the HAkA Foundation.

"The goals [of HAkA] are to protect, conserve and restore the Leuser Ecosystem while at the same time catalyzing and enabling just economic prosperity for the region," she says.

"Wild areas and wild places are rare these days," she continues. "We think gold and diamonds are rare and therefore valuable assets, but wild places and forests, like the Leuser Ecosystems, are the kind of natural assets that essentially provide us with life-sustaining services."

"The rivers that flow through the forest of the Leuser Ecosystem are not too dissimilar to the blood that flows through our veins. It might sound extreme, but tell me — can anyone live without water?"

Courtesy of Farwiza Farhan

So far, HAkA has done a lot of work to protect the region. The organization played a key role in strengthening laws that bring the palm oil companies that burn forests to justice. In fact, their involvement led to an unprecedented, first-of-its-kind court decision that fined one company close to $26 million.

In addition, HAkA helped thwart destructive infrastructure plans that would have damaged critical habitat for the Sumatran elephants and rhinos. They're working to prevent mining destruction by helping communities develop alternative livelihoods that don't damage the forests. They've also trained hundreds of police and government rangers to monitor deforestation, helping to establish the first women ranger teams in the region.

"We have supported multiple villages to create local regulation on river and land protection, effectively empowering communities to regain ownership over their environment."

She is one of Tory Burch's Empowered Women this year. The donation she receives as a nominee is being awarded to the Ecosystem Impact Foundation. The small local foundation is working to protect some of the last remaining habitats of the critically endangered leatherback turtle that lives on the west coast of Sumatra.

"The funds will help the organization keep their ranger employed so they can continue protecting the islands, endangered birds and sea turtle habitats," she says.

Hundreds of TD Canada Trust branches to open seven days a week

http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/arch ... c2467.html

[QUOTE]Hundreds of TD Canada Trust branches to open seven days a week

Even more convenient banking hours for many Canadian communities

TORONTO, Oct. 14 /CNW/ - TD Canada Trust today announced that it is increasing branch hours and introducing seven day banking across the country. Beginning February 13, 2011, more than 300 TD Canada Trust branches in almost 90 communities across Canada will serve customers seven days a week, including Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. This means that some branches will be open for business as many as 72 hours a week.

"TD Canada Trust has been the leader in convenient hours among Canadian banks for more than 30 years," said Kerry Peacock, Executive Vice President, Branch Banking, TD Canada Trust. "Our promise to customers is comfortable banking, which means superior service and convenience - that's how we compete. We already have the longest banking hours in the country, 50% more than our competitors, and soon we'll have branches open to serve customers all week long, when it's convenient for them."

"We talk to our customers regularly so we know that, given their busy work and personal lives, they appreciate the ability to do their banking at a branch when it suits their schedule, whether it's first thing in the morning, in the evening or on the weekend," added Peacock. "With this move we're pleased to offer them an additional day to do their banking, pay their bills, seek financial advice and apply for a loan or a mortgage - whatever they need to do."

TD Canada Trust has been ranked first in customer service among the five major Canadian banks for five years in a row by J.D. Power and Associates and for six years in a row by Synovate.

TD Canada Trust serves approximately 11 million personal, small business and commercial banking customers across Canada through an expanding network of over 1,100 branches and 2,600 ATMs, as well as via EasyLine telephone banking and EasyWeb Internet banking.

J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Canadian Retail Banking Customer Satisfaction Study(SM) rated TD Canada Trust highest in satisfaction among the big five Canadian retail banks for the fifth year in a row, based on account activities, account information, product offerings, facility, fees and problem resolution.

Synovate ranked TD Canada Trust first among the big five Canadian retail banks for the sixth year in a row, based on highest scores in value for money, values my business, products and services excellence, ATM banking excellence, online banking excellence, recommend to friends and family and overall customer service excellence.

TD haters ... lol, it's your own fault for not knowing the fees they are charging (or if you know, it's your fault for falling to the situation where they charge you the fee). Always putting the blame to someone else ...

I have always been a TD client, never pay a cent of fee for anything ... and it's great when you can get your banking needs in the branch done after works hours and on weekends. One of my colleague needed to make a bank draft and went to one of the other big banks at 4.30pm and it was closed! His bank branch near our work only open from 10-4 or something like that, that's ridiculous ... and it's not like we are in the middle of nowhere, we are mid town on Yonge St where there are all 5 banks on the interesection.

Theres nothing about hating. Im in the banking industry so I know CT/TD is losing customers because of their fees(especially how they treat small business owners)
They offer ipods and dvd players and/or $250 for new accounts.

he wouldn't have paid anything for that draft with the Select Service account.

I think its great TD's hours are now even more flexible. I hate having to organize my time around when the bank closes--who works only till 4:30pm? With TD I can go at a time convienient to me.

hopefully all canadian banks will follow TD's example :)

Every bank has premier accounts with low fees or no fees
But user fees are not targeted to these acct holders who are able to keep balances in their accts

And banks have ALWAYS revolved their operating hours around the local markets. When the TSE decides to close at 6pm or 8pm etc., thats when the other big 4 banks will also close at that time.

Other than that the amount of money transfers after normal bank closing hours is minimal.

Strangely I, like most of the people I work with, don't plan their lives around when the TSE is open. Most people I know work 9-5ish and find it frustrating that they can only bank one night perweek

Well thats because you're not trading millions of dollars. This is where the banks make the majority of their money.

Then you should know better than letting your LOC goes inactive and get charged the inactivity fee
mikeymike1 wrote: ↑ Ill bet you don't know of ALL of the TD/CT fees. If you say you do then i say bull**it to you
No, I dont know ALL of the TD/CT fees - but what for? I dont need to know and I dont care ... all I need to know are the fees that are associated with my accounts and I dont pay a single cent towards any fee.
mikeymike1 wrote: ↑ Your friend paid more for his Bank Draft at TD/CT than compared to Royal Bank's fee
Irrelevant to me because I have the Select Service account, I can get as many bank draft as possible.
Plus, my friend doesnt bank with TD/CT hence he couldnt get his draft at 4.30pm! wasnt even that late in the day ...

I don't have to know better.
You're the one who said "it's your own fault for not knowing the fees they are charging"

I made a comment relating to the 7 day opening that user fees will most likely go up. You made a snide reply as if im blaming 'someone' for not knowing and insinuating that you do.

damnos wrote: ↑ No, I dont know ALL of the TD/CT fees - but what for? I dont need to know and I dont care ... all I need to know are the fees that are associated with my accounts and I dont pay a single cent towards any fee.

So what? this isn't about you
Im in the industry and know TD/CT has the overall highest user fees of any other bank (especially small and big business)
Go ahead and ask all the friends you know how many of them actually have payroll drawn from TD/CT. Very few
Why is that?? they overcharge !

damnos wrote: ↑ If all a client want is to withdraw or deposit or get some bank draft ... there's no need for TSE to be opened to get those done. And some people cant take sometime off work just to get to the bank during the day.
No, but the banks have always revolved around trading hours. Its always been this way, even back in the 1920's and further.

damnos wrote: ↑ And consumer convenience is what make TD having the best service for their clients

A select few will compliment their service. But of all the banks they have probably lost to most due to user fees.
Sure they have a high satisfaction rate. But their customer base is much smaller compared to RB, Scotia and CIBC

Why else would they give away an ipod or $250.00 cash to have you transfer your accounts to them?? (and this isnt mortgages either)

and ill go back to my original comment about the 7 day opening... get ready for overall higher fees

And the branch is doing the trading? I would have thought that was the head office that took care of that.
What you are saying may be true, but I am sure there is a lot of money to be made on the day to day transactions of ordinary working class people.
I know I met them about my mortgage during an evening. I signed up for my account after 6. These little transactions can add up to a great deal of money.

I never said the 'bank branch' actually does the trading.
The banks involved make money off trading fees and surcharges. Its you and I that do the trading.

You will have to go back more than 100 years to understand why the banks operating hours revolve around the Market.
Most of it is to prevent afterhours trading and to prevent any advantages from one person or corporation to another.

Do you ever wonder why the banks have posted inside their bank "Any Transaction after 2pm, 3pm, 4pm etc will be posted as tomorrows/next days transaction"???

The key word you're using there is 'little' And thats exactly what it is

To make it as simple as possible, heres some insight... So lets say you're home is 1million just for arguments sake. So a 1 million note is traded/transferred from your bank to the realtors holding agent

The Markets trade 4 Trillion per day. This is what that number looks like - $4,000,000,000,000

Don't worry all it means is that even younger kids will be dealing with your financials now. It was nice, you walked into a bank and the teller there would know your name. Then would get promoted in the same bank and would know all your financials. Now people go and there is someone new every time.

TD Bank, N.A., is an American national bank and subsidiary of the Canadian multinational Toronto-Dominion Bank. It operates primarily across the East Coast, in fifteen U.S. states and Washington, D.C. TD Bank is the seventh-largest U.S. bank by deposits and the 11th largest bank in the United States by total assets, resulting from many mergers and acquisitions.[2] T.D. Bank, N.A. is headquartered in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.[1]

History[edit]

It is a successor to the Portland Savings Bank, which later became Banknorth.[3] The bank took its current name, TD Bank, N.A. on May 31, 2008, through the acquisition and renaming of Commerce Bank and its subsequent merger with TD Banknorth. The bank's "TD" initials, first popularized in Canada, are used officially for all American operations.

In 2010, TD Bank N.A. acquired the South Financial Group and its 172 branches across the Carolinas and Florida. South Financial was the parent company of Carolina First, with branch locations in North and South Carolina and Mercantile Bank, with branch locations in Florida, for about $191 million. South Financial's branches were converted to the TD Bank name.[4]

In 2013, TD Bank, N.A. centralized its headquarters in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, U.S.[1]

In February 2016, TD Bank's consumer card division purchased the Nordstrom credit card unit for $2.2 billion.[5][6] The acquisition added Nordstrom to TD's growing folio of private-label cards that includes Target, NordicTrack, and Tourneau.[7][8]

Legal actions and public controversies[edit]

2012 data breach[edit]

In October 2012, the Massachusetts attorney general announced that TD Bank misplaced unencrypted backup tapes with "extensive customer information, including Social Security numbers and bank account numbers." The bank initially refused to state how many customers were affected. After an inquiry by the attorney general, it stated 267,000 customers. The bank waited more than six months to notify customers.[9]

TCPA class action lawsuit[edit]

In October 2015, a class action lawsuit was filed against TD Bank claiming that it violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991.[10] The lawsuit stated that the bank called consumers up to ten times per day.[11]

As of July 3, 2017, all but one of the claims were dismissed by Judge Jerome B. Simandle, which casts doubt on the veracity of the claims.[12]

Coin-count machine lawsuit[edit]

In 2016, the bank was sued for allegations that their coin counting machines, "Penny Arcades," were inaccurately counting coins.[13] The lawsuit estimates that 26 cents out of every $100 was not counted, totaling to $9 million.[14]

[edit]

In 2005, TD Banknorth announced it purchased the naming rights of what is currently the TD Garden, home of the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins sports teams.[15]

When TD Bank bought Commerce Bancorp in 2009, the company became title sponsor of the TD Bank Ballpark, home of the Somerset Patriots.

On August 22, 2019, TD announced its partnership with The Shed, the new arts center on Manhattan's Far West Side, as lead sponsor of the "Open Call" artist commissioning program[16]

3 of the Best Banks in America

Source: Got Credit.

When it comes to choosing which bank to use, you have many choices, such as big national banks, smaller regional banks, online banks, and even credit unions. Even within each of those categories, your mind can spin from all the options. Fortunately, there are folks who regularly review and rate banks, and they can help us zero in on the best banks for us.

The MyBankTracker.com website, for example, offers quarterly ratings of all kinds of banks. Let's review their findings for national banks for the third quarter of 2015. The site explains that it's looking for great interest rates and low fees, noting that, "These award-winning banks deliver the best in service, convenience, and value."

Top-rated: Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo & Co.(NYSE:WFC) gets the top ranking. That's good news for many Americans, since the bank has more than 6,000 locations in 39 states -- more locations than any other bank. (JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America are Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, when it comes to number of branches.)

A big plus for the bank is its versatility, as it offers a huge range of products and services, such as bank accounts, mobile banking, credit cards, loans, mortgages, insurance, investment services, and even wealth management and financial advising. On the other hand, its fees are higher than those of many others, such as credit unions and online banks, and the interest rates it offers won't always be the best you can find, either. Still, depending on your needs, its convenience and offerings may make it a good match for you.

It's also worth noting that Wells Fargo has an overall rating of B from MyBankTracker, with high marks for its financial health, mobile banking, mobile deposits, and number of locations. It gets low marks for its fees and its customer ratings, and reviews are not impressive, either.

If you wonder why a bank with a B rating tops a list of the best banks, remember that the ranking are within the category of large, national banks. Also, as MyBankTracker's CEO and co-founder Alex Matjanec explains:

Our core rating looks at the bank as a whole, through a mix of hard facts (number of locations, fees vs. national average) and soft facts (customer reviews). In preparing our awards, our internal analyst team not only considered these factors but also took a deeper dive in the quality of these services from usability of the institutions' digital offerings to variety of product offerings.

Honorable mention: TD Bank
Toronto-Dominion Bank(NYSE:TD), also known as TD Bank, has more than 1,300 branches, making it the seventh-largest bank in North America by number of branches. It serves more than 24 million customers with a wide range of products and aims to live up to its slogan, "America's Most Convenient Bank," with long hours, including being open on Sundays. MyBankTracker notes, "TD bank is great if you need to do in-person banking."

On the other hand, though, TD Bank's C+ rating draws attention to the fact that it gets low marks for bank fees, number of locations, and customer satisfaction -- which are partly offset by high marks for its financial health and mobile banking services. (Ironically, high fees can help boost a bank's financial health.)

Honorable mention: PNC Bank
Also praised in this category was PNC Financial Services Group Inc's (NYSE:PNC) PNC Bank, which offers higher-than-average CD interest rates and more than 2,500 locations. It offers some innovative products for its individual and small-business customers, too, such as its Virtual Wallet account, which is free as long as you meet requirements such as conducting your business electronically.

PNC Bank's rating is a B+, better than Wells Fargo or TD Bank, but it too gets low marks for its fees and customer satisfaction.

Choosing the best banks
The banks above are worth considering, but they're not your only options. The best banks for you are the ones that offer what you need from a financial services company.

You might actually end up using several -- one bank for one purpose (such as savings) and another for another purpose (such as checking, or getting a mortgage). Think about what your needs actually are. If you plan to use ATMs a lot, you might want a bank with ATMs all over, or at least in places you frequent. If you'd like to use your mobile device for banking purposes, see what apps and services any contender bank offers, and how well rated and easy to use they are. Some banks will let you pay bills electronically with your device, and others may even let you deposit checks by taking a photo of a check's front and back with your smartphone or tablet.

Remember that you need an emergency fund (which might take the form of a bank savings account or some short-term CDs) with at least several months' worth of living expenses in it -- even eight or more months' worth, to be very conservative. Aim to get good interest rates for such an account.

Know, too, that if you want to build a big nest egg for retirement over many years, you should be thinking about opening retirement accounts, or regular taxable brokerage accounts, and investing in stocks and funds for the long term. Many big banks these days offer investment services, so you can keep IRAs and/or regular brokerage accounts with stocks and mutual funds at such banks, should you choose to.

Cast a wide net when you shop for the best banks, considering credit unions, smaller regional banks, and online banks in addition to big, national ones. The best banks for you might not be the ones you expected.

It's also home to over 300 species of birds, eight of which are endemic to how long is td bank open today region.
