Ameren lowers electric rates for customers starting January

Ameren customers will see slight savings on their electric bills in 2021.

Ameren Illinois announced that its customers will save about $12 a year on the electric delivery service portion of their utility bills starting in January. This marks the company’s third consecutive rate decrease for customers and the seventh rate decrease since the Energy Infrastructure Modernization Act, or Smart Grid Bill, was passed in 2011, according to an Ameren Illinois news release.

Customers who receive their energy supply from Ameren Illinois will pay 2.4% less each month for energy next year than they did 10 years ago. Ameren services much of La Salle County as well as Bureau, Marshall and Putnam counties.

The company announced that its residential rate is 21% lower than the national average.

“Under performance-based ratemaking, Ameren Illinois is constructing a smarter electric infrastructure, reducing the number and duration of outages and keeping customer rates stable,” Ameren Illinois Chairman and President Richard Mark said in a news release. “As the electric grid continues to evolve, we must continue to make strategic investments to strengthen our system. Since the company began implementing its modernization action plan, 1.2 million smart meters have been installed, power poles and wires have been strengthened and more delivery infrastructure is being placed underground, according to the news release. The RPC is encouraging Champaign County customers who are having difficulty paying their Ameren Illinois utility bills to apply for financial assistance from a state energy grant program.

The RPC is the designated community action agency that administers the Illinois Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a federally funded program that provides utility bill payment assistance to families and individuals who meet income-eligibility guidelines. Additional funding for the LIHEAP program was allocated under the federal CARES Act passed by Congress earlier this year to address challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. One-time energy assistance grants are available through June 30 and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Individuals from all walks of life have been impacted by COVID-19, including many who have never missed a bill payment of any kind,” said Richard J. Mark, Chairman and President, Ameren Illinois. “Many of our customers have probably never heard of LIHEAP, but it is an invaluable resource that can help them on the road to recovery. We cannot stress enough the need to take urgent action while these funds are available.”
