I thought we would republish this post from several years ago, as it still has good information about how to lower your cable bill with Xfinity (formerly Comcast). I hope it helps!

A couple of weeks ago we got a notice in the mail that our Xfinity cable bill was going up by about $50. Apparently they had mistakenly extended our promotional period  (I don't know how that happened) and needed to start billing us what they should have been charging us the last 6 months or so.

Of course – we knew this letter (or one like it) would be arriving at our mailbox soon. It's just a bit of a surprise when it comes. I guess what I thought was most troubling was they disguised the increase as a mistake of theirs and assured us they wouldn't be charging us for that error (Thanks!).



I've written before about my attempts to lower my Xfinity bill by touting our good customer status and loyalty. But, it didn't really go as planned.

Then, I happened upon a special that Financial Expert Jean Chatzky did on the Today show.  She polled her readers what one thing they most would like to save money on. The answer: how to lower my cable bill.

The answer didn't surprise. Getting a good rate (and a consistent one at that) is no easy task.

From when I first picked up the phone to call Xfinity, to when I hung up – the whole process took 1 hour. Be sure you have a little time carved out of your day for this phone call. Of course, I did call at the end of the year and Xfinity was likely a bit short-staffed given the holidays. Still, know this could take some time.

As of this year (2019), Xfinity has changed to schedule a phone call with a customer rep rather than calling them directly. I think they are trying to make things a bit harder to make contact with. They do offer a chat feature which is nice – but you may need to get on the phone with a rep to negotiate your bill due to nuances with your bill.

To contact their “Loyalty Department” directly, you'll need to dial 1-800-XFINITY (1-800-934-6489). Monday – Saturday 7 AM to 9 PM EST.

Do some research

One of the things I did before calling Xfinity was to check around the neighborhood to see what folks were paying. In particular, I wanted to see what a competitor of Xfinity was charging folks. In this case, it was Dish (or DirectTV). My next-door neighbor was getting a package that was considerably less than what I was getting with Xfinity. You'll need this information to make the case for lower rates.

Ask for the Retention Department

Jean Chatzky recommends that when you get on the line with a billing customer representative, that you immediately ask to be transferred to the Retention Department (sometimes referred to as the Loyalty Department OR Customer Solutions). This was my first mistake. I didn't. I had a helpful and courteous rep who tried their best to offer me a cheaper package, only to come out with about $6 less/per month. I wasn't happy with that and finally asked to be transferred to Retention. Ask for this department right away.

Be polite – but to the point

I never think you have to be rude or inconsiderate to negotiate a better deal. At the same time, you don't have to be a pushover. When you get through to the Retention Department, state the reason for your call: “I see that Dish is offering considerably lower rates than Xfinity – and would like to see if there is anything you can do to lower our bill before we decide to leave.” Of course, you could eliminate that last part “before we decide to leave” – but I'm just giving you a script that worked for me. When you get to the Retention Department, they already know you're about to leave.

Be prepared to negotiate some

The first offer the customer service representative gives you may not be to your liking. Don't settle. Ask if there is anything further they can do. They'll likely go through a checklist to see what services you are using. In our case, the rep asked us what channels we were using.

I didn't need to spend a lot of time negotiating. The rep gave us a deal to get us back to our original promotional pricing and included an upgrade to our landline (which we use for faxing).

There will likely be a “catch”

Update (8/12/16): If you qualify, you may be able to get Xfinity at a much lower rate depending on your income. It's called Internet Essentials and folks can get home internet starting at $9.99/month.

Update (10/12/16): After a year of no-cable, our friends at Xfinity have again raised our rates for internet service AND will be limiting data usage (right now set at 1TB – which is quite a bit). We had been paying $45/mo for our high-speed internet and they raised it to $70/mo. They've changed a lot of victoria secret dark angel bundles now so that for $70 / $80/mo, you can get cable AND internet together. This is probably a play to get more cable subscribers. So you think, “if I'm paying $60-70 for internet metro bank business I might as well pay the extra for cable again” (this is their hope at least).

After negotiating again with them to lower the rate to what they were, I cannot stress that you will need to stand firm. If you do not ask for retention right away – you will have to deal with their first line of employees what counties are near me do not have much freedom to offer you any savings. Again, they count on the fact most people give up or do not like confrontation – so they will hang-up or accept the first offer given to them. You will need to speak with the loyalty dept or retention to get what you want. Update (3/7/18): If you have been given a promotion rate and it expires, you'll need to call back and negotiate another rate decrease. Xfinity requires you to agree to their contract to receive this pricing (1-2 years) – but if you are using them, it is worth the savings. I called recently and got another $10 off my bill – back to the original promo rate after it had expired.

1. Sign Up for a Streaming Service and Downgrade to Limited Basic Cable

My Comcast Xfinity bill is $52 for internet and cable TV, but I don’t get hundreds of channels. I have what Comcast calls the “Limited Basic” plan.

For that monthly price, I get 60 Mbps internet service, local broadcast stations and HBO included.

I called Comcast to see if I could drop the local broadcast stations and lower my price, but they said it’s actually cheaper to bundle internet service and the Limited Basic plan.

To get the cable networks that I really like, I pay around $50 a month or less for a live TV streaming service.

Hulu’s Live TV Streaming Service Is My Favorite 

I’ve tested all of the major options over the last two years: YouTube TV, Hulu with Live TV, AT&T TV Now, Sling TV, and Philo.

My favorite is Hulu + Live TV. Here’s why:

  • Great mix of news, sports and entertainment networks
  • Compatible with Roku Express and many other streaming media players
  • Access to Hulu’s entire on-demand streaming library
  • 50 hours of cloud DVR included

Not long ago, Hulu made some pretty significant improvements to its interface. It now features a live TV guide that lets you preview programming up to two weeks in advance.

Other Live TV Streaming Options

Hulu with Live TV won’t be the best streaming TV service for everyone. But Hulu and the other services all have free trials, typically for a week. Why not try them all until you find a favorite?

Most of the streaming services require you to enter credit card information to sign up for a free trial. If you don’t plan to become a paying subscriber, just cancel before the trial period is up.

My advice: Take advantage of the free trials before you call Comcast to change your current plan.

2. Contact Comcast’s Customer Solutions Department to Negotiate a Lower Rate 

The $52 that I pay Comcast every month is actually a 12-month promotional rate, so I call up Xfinity’s retention department every year to negotiate a lower rate.

Comcast calls its retention department Customer Solutions, so ask for that by name when you call.

I’ve successfully negotiated with Comcast and other internet service providers over the years by following the same simple steps. Here’s what to do:

  1. Find a better offer from a competitor: If you have Comcast, go to AT&T’s website and see if they have a promo rate that’s lower than what you’re paying.
  2. Call Comcast’s retention department: The phone number for Comcast customer service is 1-800-XFINITY or 1-800-934-6489. Ask to speak to the Customer Solutions department.
  3. Share the competitor’s offer and ask for a better deal: Tell the representative that you’re thinking about switching and ask nicely what can be done to lower your monthly bill.

Over the past year or so, there have been media reports that indicate it’s getting harder to take advantage of these promotional rates year after year.

So in addition to negotiating with Comcast myself, I’ve used Ask Trim. This is a service that will contact Comcast on your behalf to lower your bill, but it charges 33% of the estimated yearly savings. For that reason, I think it’s best to contact Comcast on your own first.

3. Buy a Modem and Router Combo to Eliminate Monthly Equipment Fees

When Comcast increased the monthly equipment fee from $11 to $13 (it’s now $14) for the Xfinity wireless gateway that I use to connect to the internet, I decided to finally do something about it.

You can buy your own modem and router combo from a list of approved devices on Xfinity’s website.

Log in to your account and review Comcast’s list to see which wireless gateways you can purchase and use instead of the Xfinity device that you’re currently renting.

I bought the Motorola MG7315 modem and router for less than $100 on Amazon.com. Here’s my review:

If the Motorola MG7315 is compatible with your Xfinity internet service, I recommend it because it’s one of the cheapest options and it only took about 15 minutes to set up.

After purchasing the Motorola gateway, I saved more than $150 a year in equipment fees from Xfinity.

I have step-by-step instructions in the video above, but here’s a brief overview of the installation process for the modem and router combo that I bought:

  • Unplug your Xfinity gateway and disconnect coaxial cable
  • Connect the cable to the new Motorola gateway, plug it into the wall and turn it on
  • Contact Comcast at 1-855-652-3446 and have the following information ready for the customer service representative to finish the process on their end:
    • Xfinity account number
    • Make and model of the new gateway (printed on the bottom of the gateway)
    • New gateway’s serial number and MAC address (printed on the bottom of the gateway)

After your new wireless gateway is up and running, the final step is to return your Comcast modem and router to an Xfinity Store so that you won’t continue to be billed for it.

If you’re generally happy with your Comcast service, you may want to check out Xfinity Mobile.

Available only to Xfinity internet customers, the cell phone service uses Verizon’s network and is surprisingly affordable. New 5G data plans start at $15 for 1 GB or $45 a month for unlimited.

I switched toXfinity Mobilewhen it first launched. After my first 12 months, I paid a total of $180 for cell phone service — that’s only $15 a month.

How Not Paying Cable Bills Could Hurt Your Credit Score

Some of the bills you pay are reported to credit bureaus and others are not. Your payments on credit cards, mortgages, and other loans, for example, are reported each month, so paying them on time can help boost, or maintain, your credit score.

Utility bill payments, including those for cable TV and cell or landline phone service, generally are not reported unless they become seriously delinquent and are sent to collections—a move that can have a serious negative effect on your credit score.

Exceptions to the Rule

There are, however, a couple of exceptions. FICO, the company behind the most widely used credit scoring models, offers one score, called the FICO XD 2, that takes into account certain nontraditional data, such as utility payments. The goal is to create credit scores for consumers who might not otherwise have enough data in their records, so that potential lenders can assess their creditworthiness.

What’s a Payment Worth?

  • Account age (15%)
  • Inquiries/new accounts (10%)
  • Credit mix (10%)

The VantageScore, a credit scoring model developed by the three major credit reporting agencies as an alternative to FICO, is based on similar criteria:

  • Payment history
  • Age and type of credit
  • Credit utilization
  • Size of balances
  • Inquiries/new accounts
  • Amount of available credit

VantageScore is opaque when it comes to the exact weight it assigns to each category. But it leaves no doubt about the importance of paying bills on time. A consumer’s payment history is the only factor the VantageScore ranks as “extremely influential.”

Late Payments and Your Credit

All creditors want to know that a borrower will pay his or her debt as agreed. They use credit reports and scores in a backwards-looking fashion to assess how much of a risk a consumer is likely to pose. If a person has established a pattern of paying their bills on time, they are viewed as a responsible user of credit and not likely to cause the creditor any financial losses. Having a history of late payments, on the other hand, signals unreliability, financial instability, and greater financial risk.

The consequences of late payments escalate in severity as the account becomes more and more delinquent. The consumer’s credit report shows payment history with degrees of lateness: on-time, 30 days late, 60 days late, 90 days late, 120 days late. Each degree of lateness causes incrementally greater damage to the credit score than the previous one.

Collection, repossession, charge-offs, bankruptcy, and other notations that signify a failure to fulfill a financial obligation may also be listed, and they result in an even greater blow to the consumer’s score than late payments.

As mentioned earlier, a cable or other utility bill will generally not be reported at all unless it is seriously delinquent and in collections. That usually happens around the 90-day mark after a missed payment. Before that, the consumer is likely to be hit with late fees and ultimately a suspension of service.

The longer you fail to pay a bill, the more damage it can do to your credit score.

How Long Do Late Payments Hurt?

Credit reports reveal the payment history on all the accounts (open or closed) that they cover, but the impact of any particular late payment on your credit score will diminish over time. Recent and multiple late payments will do more damage to your score than a single late payment that has faded from memory.

VantageScore further explains that the greatest damage comes to the consumer’s credit score in the first month after the late payment is reported. Then its impact diminishes over about two years, after which it ceases to have much effect (although the late payment stays inthe consumer’s file currituck county permits seven years). If you're struggling with several recent late payments on your credit report, one of the best credit repair companies might be able to undo the damage to your credit score.

California and NYC GDP along pays for every other state probably except for Chicago and Florida(unfortunately we have to claim Florida) but please stop trying to compare NYC to any other state than California, you might be able to compare it to Seattle but that's about it!!!!!!!
